The bonus Buddy Pass entitles a companion to accompany the Primary Cardholder for a $0 base fare, when a published Economy Class fare marketed and operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge or under the Air Canada Express brand is booked for travel wholly within North America. The pass is valid for 12 months from the date of issuance. The pass is valid towards a new booking only, and not valid on existing reservations. Bookings must be made directly with Air Canada, via aircanada.com, the Air Canada Mobile App, or through the Air Canada call center (“Air Canada Reservations”). Valid for one round-trip for a companion when travelling on the same itinerary and booked at the same time as Primary Cardholder. Maximum one companion pass may be used per booking. If one-way travel is booked, the pass will be deemed fully used and the return portion of travel is forfeited. Total pricing varies based on itinerary booked. Primary Cardholder may use the pass only once for travel wholly within North America, which is defined as Canada, the United States (including Hawaii), and Mexico. Companion will be responsible to pay all applicable taxes, fees, and charges that apply above the base fare. Valid for travel at any time with no blackout periods. Also valid against the purchase of fares on sale. Companion will be booked into same fare brand as Primary Cardholder and will receive all applicable benefits and services associated with that fare brand. The pass may not be used with premium cabin fares, or in conjunction with Aeroplan flight rewards, Flight Pass, group travel bookings, Air Canada Vacations bookings, or any other discounts or promotion codes. The pass must be redeemed at time of purchase of a ticket, and if multiple companion passes are available for the Aeroplan number, the pass that would expire first will be used. Booking must be made before the pass expiry date; travel may occur after the pass expiry date subject to flight schedule availability at the time of booking. The pass may only be used as described, cannot be transferred and has no monetary or exchange value. Changes or cancellations are allowed according to the fare rules of the fare purchased. Changes and cancellations must be made at the same time for both guests, and failure to do so may result in a forfeit of the companion pass. If during a change or cancellation the pass is reinstated in the Primary Cardholders account, the original expiry date will take effect and the pass may then be considered expired. In the event of a change or cancellation, travellers are required to pay all applicable fees based on the fare type purchased for each ticket, plus the difference in fare, if applicable and all applicable taxes, fees, and charges that apply above the base fare. Companions who are members of the Aeroplan program or other partner frequent flyer programs will not be eligible to accumulate points or miles for the ticket issued in exchange for the companion pass. Aeroplan Elite Status benefits and upgrades are applicable if the traveller holds appropriate status and the fare purchased allows for such benefits and upgrades. Air Canada reserves the right to apply additional fees for bookings made via Air Canada Reservations. Unused passes will automatically be cancelled on the date the credit card is closed, regardless of reason for closure, or if the credit card account is changed to a different product. Terms and conditions of the air transportation services are subject to the General Conditions of Carriage & Tariffs and any other terms and conditions relating to air transportation services in effect at the time of booking, as determined by Air Canada in its sole discretion and as may be changed from time to time.
This one-time bonus Buddy Pass is only valid for eligible cardholders. You will not be eligible for the bonus Buddy Pass if you have previously opened an Aeroplan Program credit card of the same type, regardless of the credit card issuer and have received the Welcome Bonus offer in the last 12 months. This offer may be changed, cancelled or extended at any time and cannot be combined with any other offers.

Expert review

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards has a reputation as a solid, reliable cashback rewards card.

A $0 annual fee is a great start: It means you won’t feel pressured to use your card. The cash back you earn is a bonus, rather than an obligation to get your money’s worth. You can earn it at your own pace.

Luckily, the cashback earnings are pretty good too. You’ll earn 3% cash back on a category of your choice and 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs for the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter — and then 1% after. All other purchases earn you a consistent 1% cash back. This makes for a good mix of earnings for everyday spending.

  1. Go to the Bank of America website and click Apply now.
  2. Complete the application with details like your name, address, annual income and Social Security number.
  3. Review and submit your application.

How long will it take to be approved?

Because conditional approval is automated on the Bank of America website, you’ll often get a decision within minutes. In some cases, you’ll need to wait a few business days to a few weeks to receive a response while Bank of America processes additional verification information.

A ‘1 2 3’ cash back credit card

You may have seen this term before; it’s shorthand for a card that offers 3%, 2% and 1% cash back. The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards is an example of such a product — and it’s one of the top available.

  • Annual fee: $0. A $0 annual fee means your cash back is all a plus. You won’t feel pressured to use the card to make it worth paying for.
  • Signup bonus: Online cash. After you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days your account is open, you receive a $200 online cash bonus.
  • Cash back: More for gas and groceries. Earn 3% cash back on your chosen category (between gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores, or home improvement) and 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs on your first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter, reverting to 1% cash back after. You’ll also earn 1% cash back on everything else you buy.
  • Intro APR: Purchases and balance transfers. Get a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 billing cycles, reverting to 13.99% to 23.99% variable APR after. Make balance transfers within the first 60 days to qualify.

How much cashback rewards can I earn with the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards?

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards is effective if you spend around $800 a month in combined gas, grocery and wholesale-club purchases. Doing so helps you maximize your elevated rewards.

Here’s how much you might earn based on a similar monthly budget:

  • $250 per month on gas x 3% = $90 cash back a year
  • $500 per month on groceries and wholesale-club purchases x 2% = $120 cash back a year
  • $400 per month in other purchases x 1% = $48 cash back a year

In total, you’d earn $258 cash back over a year.

  • A cashback bonus for Bank of America customers. When you redeem your cash back into a Bank of America checking or savings account, you’ll get a 10% bonus on your earnings. Existing qualified clients of Bank of America Preferred Rewards could see a bonus of 25% and 75%.
  • Expiration on intro APRs. You’ll accrue no interest on your initial purchases and balance transfers for 15 billing cycles. After, they’re subject to an APR of 13.99% to 23.99% variable.
  • No interest grace period on cash advances. Any cash withdrawals accrue interest immediately. Balance transfers initiated outside the first 60 days your account is open also accrue interest right away.
  • Bank of America Cash Rewards foreign transaction fee. Though the card offers strong cash back, you might want to avoid using it when you travel abroad. That’s because 3% of the transaction will be charged as a fee each time you use your card in a foreign country or for a foreign-currency transaction.

Compare Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards with other cards

Should I get the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express or the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards?

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards is similar to the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, although it offers less cash back on gas and groceries.

On the plus side, it doesn’t have an annual fee, so it can effectively net you more cash back than its counterpart. Pick the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards if you spend modestly on gas and groceries.

  • You spend a lot in different categories.
The Citi® Double Cash Card may offer more consistent cash back. And it’s a customer favorite, because it’s incredibly flexible. You’ll earn 1% cash back on everything you buy and another 1% back when you pay off your purchases. It’s a smart pick if you spend widely across multiple categories.
  • You want travel rewards.
Consider excellent travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Bank of America® Travel Rewards Credit Card.

To apply for the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards, you must be at least 18 years old (or at least 21 years old, if you live in Puerto Rico).

Information you’ll need

  • Your name, residential status and address
  • Your Social Security number and date of birth
  • Your email address and phone number
  • Financial information like your annual income, source of income and employment information

What credit score do I need?

You’ll have a better chance of approval for the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards if you apply with a good to excellent credit score of 670 to 850.

Cardholders are generally pleased that the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards comes with no annual fee. Overall, they also like the card’s points structure. That said, some customers say they don’t get as much out of the card as they’d like, because they don’t spend much on gas or groceries.

Bank of America earned a Trustpilot score of 1.3 out of 5 at the time of this writing. Most negative reviews cite unhelpful customer support. Positive reviews often point to the bank’s easy-to-use website.

Bank of America also earns an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau as of November 2021 and has been accredited since 1949.

  • Make timely payments. You can pay your card bill online and enroll in autopay at the Bank of America website.
  • Avoid interest payments. After the close of each billing cycle, you have a grace period of at least 25 days to pay your balance without being charged interest.
  • Avoid fees. Late and returned payments come with hefty fees of up to $40. Balance transfers, cash advances and foreign transactions also come with fees.
  • Customer service. Call Bank of America customer support at 1-800-432-1000 with any additional questions you might have. You can also email Bank of America using an online secure form or connect through social media on Twitter or Facebook @BankofAmerica.

How do I redeem rewards from Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards?

Log in to your Bank of America online account. You can redeem when your cash rewards balance is $25 or more.

Redeem for these rewards:

  • Statement credit, which reduces the amount you need to pay on your credit card bill.
  • A check.
  • An electronic deposit into a Bank of America savings or checking account.
  • A contribution to an eligible Cash Management Account with Merrill Edge or Merrill Lynch Wealth Management.

Ally CashBack Credit Card review

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards is an excellent cashback card, and it gets even better with a $0 annual fee. It may be an especially good choice if you spend regularly on gas and groceries.

Before deciding, consider comparing other Bank of America cards or looking into other rewards cards.

  • You’ll receive the bonus eight to 12 weeks after you qualify.

  • First, you’ll need a Bank of America personal checking account. Then you’ll need a combined balance of $20,000 or more in these accounts:
    • Bank of America accounts
    • Merrill Edge or Merrill Lynch investment accounts

Bank of America Preferred Rewards includes tiers that enter based on your combined balance:

    • Gold. Required balance of $20,000 to $50,000 — 25% points bonus
    • Platinum. $50,000 to $100,000 — 50% points bonus
    • Platinum Honors. $100,000+ — 75% points bonus
  • No. Your cash back doesn’t expire as long as your account is open and in good standing.

Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card Review

If you have good credit and your monthly spending patterns aren’t always that predictable, the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card is a good way to tailor your rewards to your biggest budget items. In any given month, you’ll get to choose one of several popular bonus categories to earn 3% cash back, and you’ll always earn 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs.

While the 2% and 3% rates only apply to the first $2,500 you charge to your card each quarter, eligible Bank of America banking customers will get a rewards boost to help offset these limitations. Customers with a big enough deposit balance in Bank of America or Merrill Lynch accounts will get 25% to 75% more in cash-back earnings. (More on this below.)

Pros
  • Adaptable, competitive rewards rates

  • Solid bonus

Cons
  • Earnings caps

  • Not as simple (or potentially lucrative) as a flat-rate card

Pros Explained

  • Adaptable, competitive reward rates: You might see a higher top tier on other cash-back cards, but you may not be able to keep the category for longer than a quarter (if it’s a revolving bonus card) and chances are you won’t get a choice of categories. Plus, if you have a large chunk of money in Bank of America and Merrill accounts, you could earn up to 5.25% back in your top earning category.
  • Solid bonus: Getting $200 cash back for spending $1,000 in your first 90 days isn’t half bad, and is comparable or better than competing offers.

Cons Explained

  • Earning caps: The 3% and 2% cash back rewards only apply to the first $2,500 you spend on those categories each quarter. Depending on your budget, this can drastically limit the rewards you’ll earn in these areas. (There isn’t, however, a limit on your 1% back earnings, which applies to all purchases once you’ve hit the threshold.)
  • Not as simple (or potentially lucrative) as a flat-rate card: Plenty of cash-back cards give you 1.5% back on every dollar you spend, and there are even a few that offer 2%, under certain circumstances. This rewards scheme is more complicated. To get the most out of the card, you should anticipate where you’ll spend your money in the following month.

Bonus for New Cardholders

The $200 bonus on this card is competitive with other cash-back credit cards with no annual fee—though you’ll have to spend $1,000 within 90 days of account opening to get it, twice as much as some competitors require.

Earning Points & Rewards

The Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card lets you earn 3% cash back in a category of your choosing (gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores, or home improvement/furnishings) and 2% back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs. Those rates are limited to the first $2,500 spent in both of these categories each quarter, and then you’ll get the same 1% back that applies to purchases in all non-bonus categories.

You’ll have the option to change your 3% category once per calendar month, and if you don’t, your last choice continues to apply.

While the 3% bonus is a solid reward rate, some cards offer 3% back in more than one spending area. What’s more, a card with one rewards rate is easier, and could potentially offer even more value, depending on your spending habits and the particular card. Let’s say your quarterly spending consists of $1,500 on dining out—your chosen 3% category—$1,000 at grocery stores or wholesale clubs, and $3,000 on other purchases.

In that case, you would earn $95 each quarter—$45 on dining, $20 at grocery stores and wholesale clubs, and $30 on regular spending. That’s $380 in rewards within a year. By comparison, if you spent the same amount on a flat-rate cash-back card that gives you 2% back on everything, you would make $440 in a year.

Then again, if you’re a Bank of America customer with at least $20,000 in deposits, you can boost those earnings. Here’s the breakdown, based on the average three-month combined balance in qualified Bank of America and Merrill accounts:

  • $20,000 to $49,999 on deposit (Gold): Earn 25% more rewards
  • $50,000 to $99,999 on deposit (Platinum): Earn 50% more rewards
  • $100,000 or more on deposit (Platinum Honors): Earn 75% more rewards

This means you could get up to 5.25% back on the top bonus category (up to the $2,500 quarterly cap) and rival some of the highest rewards rates on other credit cards.

Redeeming Rewards

The Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card means it when it says it’s a cash-back credit card—there aren’t a lot of ways to redeem your rewards. You can’t cash them in for travel, for example, nor can you use them for gift cards or merchandise purchased through Bank of America. But, you may very well want a cash-back card to get cash. And it is, after all, the most versatile. Plus, your rewards won’t expire as long as your account remains open.

You do have the following options:

  • Get statement credits in any amount
  • Get a deposit to your Bank of America checking or savings account, or an eligible Merrill Lynch or Merrill Edge account in any amount
  • Contribute a minimum of $25 in rewards to a qualifying 529 college savings account with Merrill Lynch or Merrill Edge

You can set up automatic redemptions of at least $25 into an eligible Merrill Lynch, Merrill Edge, or Bank of America account.

How to Get the Most Out of This Card

While the best way to maximize your earnings is to be in Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards program, we recognize the deposit requirements may be unrealistic for many. Luckily, earning the $200 cash bonus is quite a bit easier: just spend an average of $334 a month during your first three months.

From there, make sure you put all your purchases from the bonus categories on this card, at least until you hit the $2,500 quarterly limit for bonus points.

Customer Experience

Bank of America gets average marks for customer service, but ranks third out of 11 issuers in J.D. Power’s 2020 Credit Card Satisfaction Study. It does have a popular mobile app that ranked second only to American Express in a separate J.D. Power study. Plus, you can get a free FICO score either online or through the app.

Security Features

Bank of America offers standard security features for a credit card. It does let you set up account alerts so you’re updated about payments, due dates, and more. Those could help you spot fraudulent charges.

Fees

None of the fees that come with this card stand out from what competitors charge. Travel bugs should take note that there is a 3% foreign transaction fee, so you’ll want to use a different card for purchases in other countries.

Bank of America Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students: Review

The Bank of America Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students, which offers 3% cash back in the category of your choice with no annual fee, is a great option for students who are just beginning to establish their credit. With great customer service, easy online account management, and personalization features, the Bank of America Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students offers an easy way for students to build credit while also earning rewards.

Bank of America Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students Rates and Fees

ANNUAL FEEINTRO APRREGULAR APRRECOMMENDED CREDIT SCORE
No annual feeFor the first 15 billing cycles, 0%13.99%–23.99% (variable)620–659

Overview of Rates and Fees

The Bank of America Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students has no annual fee, which simplifies your path to good credit. For the first 15 statement-closing dates, Bank of America offers a 0% introductory APR for students. However, once those 15 statements have occurred, the APR will be set between 13.99% and 23.99%.

The annual percentage rate (APR) is the annual cost of the loan, including fees, to the borrower. The interest rate, on the other hand, is the annual cost of just the loan amount to the borrower. The APR gives you more detailed information on what you’re paying. Students can avoid paying high interest rates on their credit card by paying their balance in full by the monthly due date.

Important APR rates and other fees:

  • Balance Transfer Introductory APR: For the first 15 statements, there is a 0% balance transfer APR. Having an introductory balance transfer allows you to transfer any remaining debt from another credit card to your Bank of America Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students.
  • Balance Transfer Fee: The balance fee is either $10 or 3% of the amount of each transaction, whichever is greater.
  • Foreign Transaction Fee: You will have to pay 3% of the U.S. dollar amount spent in a foreign country or if the transaction is made or processed outside of the U.S.

As with any credit card, the Bank of America Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students comes with a late payment penalty. You can avoid penalty fees by paying your statement in full or at least meeting the minimum payment each month.

If you do not make the minimum payment, you’ll incur a late payment fee of $29. If you rack up additional late payments within the next six billing cycles, your late payment fee will rise to $40. However, if your credit card statement is $100 or less, you will not be charged a late fee on the payment due date.

Earn Cash Back

Quite possibly, the biggest selling point of this card is its 3% cash back rewards. Bank of America assigns merchants a category code based on the types of products or services that they sell, and this category code helps students earn cash back on the purchases they’ve made.

Cash back categories include:

  • Gas
  • Online shopping
  • Dining
  • Travel
  • Drug stores
  • Home improvement and furnishings

The card’s cash back settings are automatically set to “Gas” for the first payment cycle unless the student changes it.

Bank of America also offers an easy-to-use mobile app, which students can use to change their cash back category for the month. This means that if you’re planning a road trip, you could change your cash back category to gas one month and then switch to dining the next month.

Each cash back category comes with specific exemptions. Since Bank of America does not control how purchases are classified, some purchases may not fall within the category you expect them to. To help you better understand cash back categories, Bank of America provides a helpful guide.

What Do I Need to Qualify for This Credit Card?

Bank of America designed the Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students to help students build credit for a successful financial future. They suggest that students wishing to establish their credit should consider this card. Established credit history can help you apply for a car loan or even an apartment.

If you’re just starting out and do not yet have credit history, you can add a co-signer to your application. Adding a co-signer is a fairly simple process that can help tremendously with building your credit. A co-signer can be someone who you trust to vouch for your credit (such as a parent, relative, or significant other). Having a co-signer ensures the bank that someone will pay back your balance. If you miss payments, the bank can then go to your co-signer, making them responsible for paying the remaining balance.

To start building credit, banks typically require some sort of credit history. Alternatively, you can open a checking account at the bank where you would like to open a credit card. For instance, if you’ve had a checking account for a few years and have a history of good business with the bank, they are more likely to trust you as a customer and may allow you to open a credit card.

Application Requirements

The credit card application process is simple and can be completed online or in person. You can even schedule an appointment with a Bank of America specialist to explore your credit card options.

The credit card application will ask for your student status, year in school, employment status, annual income, and monthly housing payment.

What Makes This Credit Card a Great Option for Students?

Bank of America offers a $200 cash rewards bonus if you make at least $1,000 in purchases during the first 90 days of having the card. In addition, Bank of America protects your account by blocking potential fraud and abnormal money spending. They also provide a $0 Liability Guarantee if fraudulent transactions do occur on the account.

Bank of America Mobile App and Online Banking

Bank of America’s mobile app makes managing finances easier by sending you instant alerts and helping you track your money habits. Fortified with Touch ID or Face ID, the mobile app ensures users can log in quickly and securely to monitor their finances. Within the application, students can set unusual activity alerts to make sure they are protected from fraudulent activity.

In addition, Bank of America’s online banking helps students streamline and manage their personal finances. You can quickly pay credit card bills, check available credit, and transfer funds through the online banking system or mobile app. It’s reassuring to know you can stay up to date with your finances and pay off your credit card statement while away at university or visiting home. Having paperless statements also reduces paper consumption while giving you a higher level of account security.

Online banking helps you to establish good banking and credit habits. On the mobile app, it’s easy to track your monthly spending and then compare your spending habits throughout the year.

Bank of America also enables users to personalize their dashboard to fit their preferences. On the dashboard, students can add alerts, view their monthly expenses, reference their FICO score, and more. The “Spending & Budgeting” tab is an additional perk for students that allows them to track categorical spending and set budgets.

Are There Any Downsides?

Depending on your credit history, the APR for this card could be quite high. Although your APR could be as low as 13.99%, on the high end, it could be 23.99%. To avoid high interest rates, make sure that you pay at least the minimum on the statement each month.

This credit card also has a $2,500 quarterly spending limit on your category of choice. This will break down to 3% cash back on the category of your choice (online shopping, travel, dining, home improvement, drug stores, or gas) and 2% cash back on grocery stores and wholesale clubs, up until your total cash back reaches $2,500. Once you reach $2,500, you will then earn 1% cash back for the remainder of the quarter.

Bottom Line

The Bank of America Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students is an excellent credit card option for students wishing to build their credit history. Bank of America offers online and in-person consultations so that students can talk to real professionals about establishing their credit wisely.

This card is best for students who already have some credit history and want to earn cash rewards on everyday spending. Buying food and gas is an unavoidable expense for many students, but with the cash back rewards option, students can get some of that money back.

Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card Review: Flexibility to Earn Big Rewards

Top perks

Up to 3% cash back: You’ll earn the following cash back rates with the card:

  • 3% in your choice of one of six popular spending categories (gas, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores, or home improvement/furnishings)
  • 2% at grocery stores and wholesale clubs
  • 1% on other spending

The 2% and 3% cash back rates are for your first $2,500 in spending combined at grocery stores, wholesale clubs, and in your choice category each quarter.

$200 intro bonus: To get this bonus, you must spend $1,000 within the first 90 days. Considering how much you’ll make for a very small minimum spending requirement, this card has one of the best sign-up bonuses among cash back cards.

No annual fee: Like quite a few of the best cash back cards, this card doesn’t charge an annual fee.

0% intro APR: The 0% intro APR lasts for 15 billing cycles and applies to purchases and balance transfers, although balance transfers must be made within 60 days of your account opening to qualify. That’s not a big deal, because if you’re planning to transfer credit card debt, you’d want to do that as soon as possible, anyway

Bonus cash back for Bank of America customers: What makes Bank of America different from other card issuers is the special bonuses it offers for clients who also have banking or investment accounts.

Here’s how it works: If you meet combined balance minimums in any bank accounts with Bank of America and investment accounts with Merrill, you’ll qualify for even larger bonuses through the Preferred Rewards program. The tiers to that program are:

  • Gold -- $20,000 combined balance minimum, 25% bonus
  • Platinum -- $50,000 combined balance minimum, 50% bonus
  • Platinum honors -- $100,000 combined balance minimum, 75% bonus

You can see how each bonus would affect your cash-back rates in the table below.

Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Review: Choose Your Own Bonus Category

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit cardstands out among other cash-back cards as a great option, despite its complicated terms.

Unlike other cards, the $0-annual-fee card lets you choose your own 3% bonus category from a list of options and change that selection up to once a month. It's an especially good deal for those who can boost their rewards rates by keeping large balances with Bank of America® or Merrill.

The main downside: The card comes with bonus category spending caps, so it's not a good pick for big spenders.

Key features of the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card

Card type:Cash back.

Annual fee: $0.

Sign-up bonus: $200 online cash rewards bonus after you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening..

Ongoing rewards:

While the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card offers potentially valuable rewards for those who spend modestly, its rewards structure is fairly involved.

  • 3% back on a category of your choice (options listed below) and 2% back on grocery stores and wholesale clubs for the first $2,500 of combined bonus category/ grocery store/ wholesale club spending per quarter; after hitting that threshold, you’ll earn 1% back on these purchases.

  • 1% back on all other purchases.

When selecting a 3% back bonus category, you can choose one of the following six options:

  1. Gas.

  2. Online shopping.

  3. Dining.

  4. Travel.

  5. Drugstores.

  6. Home improvement and furnishings.

You can change this category up to once a month. If you don't make a selection, the default 3% cash-back category will be set to gas, according to the issuer. Your selected category will remain the same from month to month, unless you change it.

APR: 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 13.99%-23.99% Variable APR.

Other benefits:

With this card, there’s no minimum redemption requirement when doing a one-time redemption of cash rewards into your Bank of America® account or statement credit, but there’s still a $25 minimum redemption requirement for other redemption options. Cash back can be redeemed for statement credit, a check, a direct deposit into a Bank of America® checking or savings account, an eligible 529 account or a contribution to an eligible Merrill account. You can also opt to register for automatic redemption.

Before pouncing on this offer, pay close attention to the spending caps on the bonus categories. If you spend far more than $2,500 per quarter on this card's 3% and 2% categories, you might earn more rewards with a different card that doesn't impose such caps.

Benefits of the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card

Ability to choose your own 3% category

There aren’t many rewards credit cards that allow you to choose your own bonus categories. And of those that exist, none of them lets you change your selection up to once a month, as the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card does. That makes the card valuable for cardholders who want choice — especially because the card defines its rewards categories quite generously.

Consider the online shopping category, for example. This category includes purchases made with the following retailers, among others:

  • Amazon.com.

  • Bestbuy.com.

  • Groupon.com.

  • Target.com.

  • Apple.com.

  • Macys.com.

  • Walmart.com.

» MORE:NerdWallet's best credit cards for online shopping

The dining category is similarly wide-ranging. This bonus category isn't just limited to sit-down restaurants; it also includes other eating places, fast-food restaurants, bars, cocktail lounges, nightclubs, taverns and drinking places. That would include, for example, Starbucks, GrubHub and McDonald's, among many other merchants, the issuer confirms. Consider, too, the breadth of the card's home improvement category, which covers retailers from Ace Hardware to Williams-Sonoma, but also things like air conditioning repair, plumbers, landscapers, antique shops, florists and much more. It's one of NerdWallet's top credit cards for new homeowners.

Remember, though, you'll only earn bonus rewards on the first combined $2,500 in purchases on the card's 3% and 2% categories each quarter. After that, you'll earn only 1% on those purchases.

Loyalty bonuses

While the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card promises plenty of choices, its rewards rates are unremarkable compared with other no-annual-fee cards — that is, unless you qualify for the Bank of America® Preferred Rewards program.

Under this program, you can earn 25% to 75% more on your eligible Bank of America® credit card rewards, among other benefits. You can qualify for the Preferred Rewards program when your combined balances in Bank of America® or Merrill accounts surpass certain thresholds. For example, say you kept more than a combined $100,000 in Bank of America® and Merrill accounts, and qualified for the 75% rewards boost. Instead of the usual 3% cash back on the category of your choice, you'd effectively be earning 5.25% back on purchases in that category. That's more than you'd generally earn on other no-annual-fee cards.

Introductory 0% APR period and no annual fee

With the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card, you can come out ahead on rewards no matter how little you spend. That's because the annual fee is $0. The card also comes with an introductory 0% APR offer: 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 13.99%-23.99% Variable APR. That gives you plenty of breathing room to pay down a large purchase.

Drawbacks and alternatives

Spending caps can limit earning power

The quarterly spending caps on the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card make it a less valuable choice for those who spend thousands of dollars each month. If this is you, a flat-rate rewards card that doesn't impose such restrictions could be a smarter choice.

Try the $0-annual-fee Citi® Double Cash Card – 18 month BT offer instead. It offers 2% cash back on all purchases: You’ll get 1% back when you make purchases, and another 1% back when you pay them off. That rewards rate alone is enough to put it in direct competition with rewards credit card heavyweights — even those that charge annual fees.

Without loyalty bonuses, rewards rates are modest

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card offers plenty of good bonus category choices, but if you don't qualify for the Preferred Rewards program, its rewards just go up to 3%, with spending caps.

For a card with customizable rewards that go a little higher, theU.S. Bank Cash+™ Visa Signature® Card – NerdWallet Exclusive Offer could fit the bill. This card offers 5% cash back on your first $2,000 in combined eligible net purchases on two categories of your choice from a list, and 2% cash back on your choice of either gas stations, dining or grocery stores. While the 5% categories on this card are relatively narrow — including, for instance, fast food, cell phone providers, and TV, internet and streaming services, among others — and you can't change your choices as often, this card might prove more valuable if you happen to spend an outsize amount in one of these categories.

For more information on how these cards stack up with each other, see our roundup of best credit cards.

Should you get the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card?

The bonus-category spending caps on the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card can make it a less-valuable deal for those who spend thousands each month. But if you’re a frugal shopper and want to choose your own 3% cash-back bonus category — especially if you keep a lot of money with Bank of America® or Merrill — this card is an excellent pick.

Quite possibly, the biggest selling point of this card is its 3% cash back rewards. Bank of America assigns merchants a category code based on the types of products or services that they sell, and this category code helps students earn cash back on the purchases they’ve made.

Cash back categories include:

  • Gas

What Do I Need to Qualify for This Credit Card?

Bank of America designed the Cash Rewards Credit Card for Students to help students build credit for a successful financial future.

Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card Review: An Excellent Cash Back Card for Bank of America Members

Our Thoughts on the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card

A simple, no-frills cash rewards card—the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card has a $0 annual fee and is great for everyday purchases. The card has a reward tier structure that allows you to earn 3% cash back in the category of your choice, 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs (for the first $2,500 in combined choice category/grocery store/wholesale club quarterly purchases), 1% cash back on all other purchases

GasOnline Shopping
DiningTravel
Drug StoreHome Improvement/Furnishings

Despite being only able to choose one category, which you can change month to month, the wide range of available categories makes this a great card for angel victoria secret card payment cash back opportunities at drug stores or home improvement stores. Another feature on this card is a typical sign-up bonus: $200 online cash rewards bonus after you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening. However, if you have a Bank of America Preferred Rewards account, you can earn 25% - 75% more cash back on every purchase.

Where the Card Could do Better

Since the bonus categories are capped at a combined $2,500 every quarter, if you spend $2,000 on online shopping for your 3% category and $500 at grocery stores, for the rest of the quarter you would only get a below average 1% cash back on any other purchases while online shopping or at grocery stores.

Overall, this card is excellent for people whose accounts qualify for the Platinum or Platinum Honors tier of Preferred Rewards, or above average if you want to use the 3% cashback on the niche categories.

How Does the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card Compare to Other Cards?

While the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card is an excellent card for Bank of America customers, lake placid ubu ale doesn't mean this card can't be good for people who don't bank with Bank of America. Below, we provide some comparisons against other popular cashback credit cards.

Our Thoughts on the Chase Freedom Unlimited®

These cards are very similar in their features, but the better card will largely depend on your spending and which bank/credit cards you use. The Chase Freedom Unlimited® lets you Earn 5% on Chase travel purchased through Ultimate Rewards®, 3% on dining and drugstores, and 1.5% on all other purchases.

People who want a hassle-free cash back experience, high balances with Bank of America, or the ability to get high rewards rate on rare categories like drug stores or home improvement stores are better off using the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card. Those who dine out and travel often, and prefer a high rate of unlimited cash back on everything else or have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve® would be better off using the Chase Freedom Unlimited®.

If you have high balances on your Bank of America accounts you get a multiplier effect on your cash back rewards rate. On the other hand, if you have the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve®, the Chase Freedom Unlimited® has a very good rewards rate on any purchase. This is because the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card provides 25% more value when redeeming the points for travel on the Chase portal. Similarly, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® provides 50% more value. However, this means the cash back rewards are only valuable when using them through the Chase portal for travel, limiting how you would like to use your rewards.

Our Thoughts on the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card

As another unlimited 1.5% Cash Back on every purchase, every day with a $0 annual fee, the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card is a standard cash back card and a good alternative to the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card if you don't want to deal with the hassle of tracking which categories you should use the credit card for. Otherwise, the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card is better if you spend the time to optimize your spending or have high balances across your Bank of America accounts.

Other features include a foreign transaction fee of None and an APR of 0% intro on purchases for 15 months (then 14.99% - 24.99% (Variable)), which can make this a great card to use when traveling.

Our Thoughts on the Discover it® Cash Back

The Discover it® Cash Back is a rotating category cash back card that provides 5% cash back at different places each quarter up to the quarterly maximum when you activate, 1% unlimited cash back on all other purchases - automatically. Although the $1,500 is lower than the $2,500 limit on the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card, the higher rewards rate means you still get $75 worth of cash back in a quarter if you manage to spend $1,500 in the category. This means trading flexibility for a higher rewards rate. For 2021, the categories include grocery stores, Walgreens and CVS (January-March), gas stations, select streaming services and wholesale clubs (April-June), restaurants and PayPal (July-September), Amazon.com, Target.com and Walmart.com (October-December). The signup bonus is unique for the Discover it® Cash Back—the bonus doubles any cash back you earned at the end of your first year.

The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card is the better choice if you want the flexibility to choose your category every month. This flexibility may be better for you over the course of the year because the rotating categories chosen for you may not fit your spending habits, resulting in the lack of rewards for the card.

Sign-up bonus: $200 online cash rewards bonus after you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening.

While the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card promises plenty of choices, its rewards bank of america cash back rewards are unremarkable compared with other no-annual-fee cards — that is, unless you qualify for the Bank of America® Preferred Rewards program.

The card also comes with an introductory 0% APR offer: 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases and balance bank of america cash back rewards, and then the ongoing APR of 13.99%-23.99% Variable APR.
