MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Alabama Power says it will return to its standard business operations in the coming month, but will offer a new payment plan to its customers as they continue to navigate their way through the pandemic.
The utility company says it hasn’t disconnected or charged late fees to any customer affected by COVID-19 since the pandemic started in March. That policy will continue through Sept. 28 when it returns to standard operations.
However, the company says those facing economic or medical hardships due to COVID-19 can now choose from payment plans that spread out their balances over several months. You can sign up HERE or by calling 1-800-245-2244.
Alabama Power says it will also give additional relief to customers affected by the pandemic, mostly through a $25 credit on October bills due to lower fuel expenses.
Credits will depend on energy use and could vary.
Alabama Power also offers several programs designed to help low-income, elderly or disabled customers with energy bills such as Project SHARE, The Alabama Business Charitable Trust Fund and through energy bill discounts.
- Project SHARE: A program in partnership with the Salvation Army, Project SHARE helps pay energy bills of low-income Alabamians who are age 60 or older and/or disabled. Customers who want to request energy assistance can apply at their local Salvation Army office or by calling 205-328-2420. Alabama Power customers who alabama power pay your bill to help others can donate by checking the Project SHARE box on their Alabama Power bill.
- The Alabama Business Charitable Trust Fund: The ABC Trust works with local community action agencies to help cover the cost of heating and cooling for low-income families and those struggling with temporary alabama power pay your bill problems. The company says the scammers claim to be a representative from Alabama Power and request are any grocery stores open today on christmas payment on accounts. In some instances, the scammers alter a customer’s caller ID to falsely read Alabama Power Company.
Alabama Power says the scams are increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company advises customers to hang up if anyone calls them claiming to be with Alabama Power, then call Alabama Power’s customer service line at 1-800-245-2244.
Alabama Powers says customers should also remember the following to protect themselves from scams:
- Alabama Power will never come to a customer's door and demand an immediate payment.
- Alabama Power will never call a customer and ask for bank information or a credit card number over the phone.
- Any Alabama Power employee who comes to a customer’s door for any reason will have company identification that they will gladly show. If a customer has any questions about whether a person actually works for Alabama Power, they should call Alabama Power at 1-800-245-2244 and not let the person inside their home.
- Scammers sometimes claim they represent a public agency or government office offering grants that can pay your Alabama Power or other utility bill. Customers should never provide anyone making this claim their credit card information, their Alabama Power bill information or account number, or any personal banking information. If someone makes this claim, customers should call Alabama Power or their local police department to report it.

Absolutely! You are still a member of South Alabama Electric Cooperative even if you choose to utilize our Prepay program.
IF I ALREADY HAVE A TRADITIONAL ACCOUNT, CAN I SWITCH TO PREPAY?
Yes! You can switch to a Prepay* account even if you already have service with South Alabama Electric Cooperative. Your existing deposit will be applied to your current account balance, with any remaining amount being alabama power pay your bill as a credit to your Prepay account.

- In person: Payments can be made at our office location between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

WHAT IF MY PREPAY ACCOUNT RUNS LOW?
Prepay is a self-managed program. You will receive a low balance notice by email or text message based on the notification preferences you set on your account. This will give you time to purchase power before the meter actually stops.
If you do not purchase more power, the meter will stop, and the power will turn off. Once a payment is made, your power will be reconnected.
- When an account is in arrears (overdue payment), all payments made are split 70/30 with 70% applied as payment toward current usage and 30% covering arrears recapture.
- Accounts in the negative are turned off at 11 a.m. the next business day.
- If you don’t receive your daily text message, please immediately let us know.
- After seven days of being off, your account will be final billed and you will need to contact customer service during normal business hours to re-establish electric service.
- If your power is turned off, you have to pay any overage accumulated and bring the account to a $50 credit balance. If you have an arrears recapture, you have to pay the 30% as well.
Example: Regular pay — $6.59 + $50 = $56.59 to be reconnected.
Arrears recapture pay — $6.59 + $50 = $56.59 ÷ .7 = $80.84
- Kilowatt usage to date: $6.59
- Minimum balance required: $50
- $24.25 is 30% applied to your arrears recapture balance

Alabama Power offers unprecedented relief options for customers affected by pandemic
Alabama Power Company on Tuesday announced a six-week transition period to standard business operations.
Since a state of emergency was first declared in March, Alabama Power voluntarily has not disconnected or charged late fees to any customer affected by COVID-19. A written announcement on Tuesday confirmed that the company will continue to not disconnect customers until September 28, when standard business operations resume.
However, this does not mean customers adversely impacted by the pandemic who cannot pay their full bills will be disconnected at that time.
Alabama Power’s announcement also outlined the company, as a matter of priority, will offer tailored solutions to meet each customer’s unique needs and circumstances as everyone continues to navigate this unprecedented time together.
As part of its continued customer support, Alabama Power detailed that it is offering a brand-new, easy-to-use payment plan service to help customers facing economic or medical hardships due to coronavirus.
Payment plans will reportedly allow customers to spread out energy bill balances over several months. To enroll, customers can visit this website or use the automated telephone system at 1-800-245-2244.
The company stressed that it will continue “to work individually with customers on payment assistance resources” and use “multiple channels to notify customers behind on payments options to maintain service.”
Additionally, Alabama Power offers several ongoing programs designed to help low-income, elderly or disabled customers with alabama power pay your bill energy bills.

Customers should further note that Alabama Power recently announced they will provide expedited relief to all customers. The typical customer is expected to receive a $25 credit on their September bill statement in October due to lower than expected fuel expenses. Read more on that here.
That bill credit is on top of a 3% rate reduction that Alabama Power customers are already experiencing this year. In total, the company’s customers are receiving approximately $300 million in benefits for 2020.
The company’s response to the pandemic has previously drawn praise from Public Service Commission President Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh (R-AL).
“Without politicizing this human tragedy by seeking attention for their actions, Alabama Power … [has] simply done what is in the best interest of their customers,” Cavanaugh said in the spring.
After approving the recently announced bill credit, she commented, “At the PSC we have tried to help every way we could from the beginning, and Alabama Power’s flexibility in dealing with affected consumers has been a model for utilities across the country.”
Resuming standard operations on September 28 also means that the company will reopen walk-in services at Alabama Power business offices and appliance centers in a manner consistent with local, state and CDC guidelines.
