Handgun Review: Smith & Wesson M&P9 M2.0 3.6” Compact
Smith & Wesson has built yet another very accurate, extremely functional and quite concealable pistol with their new M&P9 M2.0 3.6” Compact semi-automatic in 9mm. Like the first version of S&W’s Compact Series, the striker-fired M&P9 M2.0 3.6” Compact holds 15+1 rounds (13+1 in .40 S&W) compared to the full size M&P 2.0’s 17-round capacity in 9mm. However, the Compact can also accept the full size 17-round magazines. The gun even ships with two magazine spacer sleeves to make those high-cap mags work better—so you could carry it concealed with the flush 15-rounder loaded and one or two spare 17-round magazines with the spacer sleeves in place. That’s a total of 50 rounds for a potential EDC setup. There are also products on the market like the X-Grip Magazine Adapter that serve the same function as the spacers, but with better ergonomics and looks.
The big difference from the first M2.0 Compact is the new version’s shorter barrel. S&W took the original 4-inch barrel and trimmed it down to 3.6-inches. That’s not a huge alteration, but it did trim more than an ounce of weight from the gun and made it a half-inch shorter overall, which can make a difference for some carry methods.
S&W sent me a new production M&P9 M2.0 3.6” Compact to test. I spent several range sessions with the pistol and went through over 300 rounds of various brands of ammunition. The pistol was every bit as accurate as other Smith & Wesson semi-automatics—which means, very accurate—and it didn’t experience a single failure to feed or to eject.
Carry Testing and Range Test
For a week, I also used the new gun as my EDC. It packed light and comfortable, especially for a pistol with 16 rounds on board.
For accuracy testing, I shot the 3.6″Compact at what I consider mid-range concealed carry distances of five to seven yards. All my shooting was done while standing, shooting off-hand, and outside.
I used three brands of ammunition: SIG Sauer’s V-Crown self-defense loads with a 115-grain jacketed hollow-point bullets; my range-and-practice loads were from Aguila Ammunition and loaded with 124-grain full-metal-jacket (FMJ) bullets; and I also used ammo from Precision Delta with 147-grain FMJ projectiles.
At five and seven yards, all brands of ammunition consistently pegged five-shot groups of 1.5-inches or less. My best grouping was actually six shots of the Aguila that scored 1.01-inches, with four of those shots clustered in at a very impressive .388-inches.
Remanufactured ammunition often gets panned, but the Precision Delta, using once-fired brass, put five shots at seven yards into a 1.37-inch group, and four of those shots measured just .74-inches.
My best group with the self-defense V-Crown was 1.18-inches at seven yards, with four of those rounds coming in at just .68-inches. I also used the V-Crown on one of my favorite self-defense practice targets, Champion’s Defensive Series Hostage silhouette.
At seven yards, eight of my ten shots of the V-Crown scored immediate stopping hits on the bad guy, while two of the shots were a bit too far left (thought still within the head outline).
No hostages were injured in the testing!
The 3.6″ Compact’s tactical, white 3-dot steel sights lined up on targets quickly and cleanly. The pistol is offered with or without a manual, ambidextrous thumb safety. I had the model with the safety; the safety snapped into and out of the “SAFE” position very positively, with an audible click. A light or laser can be attached on the rail under the front on the barrel.
The aggressive texturing along the grip, the backstrap and front strap provided a very firm hold on the pistol. The M&P9 3.6” Compact comes standard with four interchangeable palm swell inserts for optimal hand-fit. The palm swell insert already in place fit my hand very well, so I didn’t need to change out to another palm swell.
But just to make sure this feature worked, I did the change-over myself a few times. It was easily done. First, I removed the magazine and made sure the pistol was unloaded. Then, I gave the half-moon shaped frame tool at the bottom and very rear of the mag well a ¼ turn, and pulled it straight out. At this point, the existing palm swell was easily removed and a new one popped into place. The frame tool was reinserted, and I was ready to shoot.
However, bank of america merrill lynch leveraged finance conference 2017 trigger on the M&P9 3.6″ Compact requires a learning curve. As noted, the pistol is striker-fired, using an internal, spring-loaded system to strike the bullet’s primer. Striker-fired pistols tend to have a spongy trigger. They can and usually do work quite well, but it does take some practice to get used to that longer pull and the “sprong!” vibration when the striker is released.
The trigger in the M&P9 3.6″ Compact has a very long pull. And once the trigger was back far enough to make contact with the striker-fire assembly, there’s a tightness I haven’t found in most other striker-fires.
For comparison, my EDC is a Smith and Wesson M&P45 Shield. The two triggers are quite different. The trigger on the Shield engages much sooner during pull back than the M&P9 3.6″ Compact’s trigger. The Shield trigger also has a cleaner pull, and resets quicker.
Now, given the accuracy results I registered with the 3.6” Compact, the trigger isn’t exactly a problem. But it does take getting used to. That noticeably longer pull requires a much more precise finger pad placement on the front of the trigger blade than my 45 Shield and a steadier pull back on the trigger. If your finger pad is a bit off to one side, the longer engagement will pull your shot off target much more than it would with my Shield.
That said, with a little more practice and concentration, you will be on target.
I carried the M&P9 3.6″ Compact for a week, using a Sticky Holster MD 4G model. In the summer, I prefer to carry in the small of my back while wearing a looser fitting shirt. The pistol fit nicely in this position and was easy to draw.
Accurate. Easy to carry. And a functional workhorse. That’s the M&P9 M2.0 3.6” Compact, and you can’t ask for much more from a self- or home-defense pistol. It’s also available with or without a manual thumb safety, to your preference.
S&W M&P9 M2.0 3.6″ Compact SPECS:
Smith & Wesson’s crop of all-metal, DA/SA pistols was quickly – and entirely – replaced by the polymer-framed M&P. The M&P line has expanded and evolved into one of the best plastic, striker-fired pistols on the market today.
Today we will take a look at the M&P9 2.0.

S&W M&P9 M2.0 Background
The Smith & Wesson M&P9 is a polymer-framed, striker-fired, 17-round, 9mm pistol.
It was introduced in 2005 and lived, for several years, in the shadow of the Glock.
So much so that it’s really hard to talk about the M&P without mentioning the older plastic pistol.
Though one led to the other, the M&P has secured its reputation and now stands fully on its own.
The biggest market differentiator when the M&P was introduced was the interchangeable backstrap system. The user wasn’t stuck with a single, love-it-or-leave-it grip size.
He or she now had the ability to slim the grip down, or up, to match hand size. This made a lot of people really happy.
In 2017 the M&P line was refreshed with the release of the “M&P 2.0”. Some notable improvements were made including an extended steel liner in the polymer frame, an improved magazine release, a (supposedly) improved the trigger, more aggressive grip texturing, and a few cosmetic changes.
This is when I really dove into the M&P line. Though I have yet to carry one (other than the Shield), they are my preferred striker-fired pistols.
Today I am going to examine the full-sized version of the M&P9 2.0. It features a 4.25” barrel and a grip frame that accommodates a 17-round magazine. I will also briefly discuss the Compact, 3.5”, 15-round version.
S&W M&P9 M2.0 Features
Adjust your grip just as you like it.
2Steel Three Dot Sights
Although I prefer to change them out, the sights aren’t terrible by any means.
3Reversible Mag Release
Great for left or right-handed shooters.
This allows for a whole bunch of sweet add-ons such as a quality pistol light.
S&W M&P9 M2.0 – Our Take
Now the real reason you’re here…The meat and potatoes of the review. Let’s dig in and see how this M&P fares.
The M&P line is about as reliable as a gun gets. I have two M&Ps, one full-sized, one Compact, both 2.0 variants. After shooting a combined 1,000 rounds I have yet to have a malfunction, and I don’t think my experience is atypical. The M&P lives up to our modern expectations of reliability.
The M&P line has been plagued with supposed accuracy problems since the very beginning, and I often see this blamed on barrel quality. A cottage industry sprang up offering replacements for the factory tubes. Much of this is probably overblown; most shooters probably aren’t coming close to the mechanical accuracy of the gun. Though a new barrel is not a listed feature of the 2.0 model these complaints seem to have died down somewhat.
I have no problem at all with the accuracy of the M&P…with one expectation. The trigger doesn’t make it easy to be extremely accurate. Though some people like it I really don’t. I wish the trigger could be like that found on the M&P Shield – short, crisp, and with a defined wall. The larger, double-stack M&P triggers are mushy and seem to break at some nebulous point. I will be much more interested in shooting my M&Ps when I have replaced the bang switches with aftermarket Apex parts.
The M&P’s factory sights aren’t bad at all. They are all steel with three dots. I’ll be honest – I could care less about the dots, but these are still quality sights. Though I replace most of my sights with Heinie Straight-8s (including my M&Ps) I’m still glad S&W deigned to put metal in the sight dovetails.
The ergonomics of the M&P are what drove me to it. I am all about the idea of “dance with the one that brung ya” (as my dad would say) when it comes to shooting the guns you are issued. Whether you’re issued a Beretta 92, a custom 1911, or a Glock 17 (I have been issued all of the above) you overlook your objections and get as good as you possibly can with it. If your guns aren’t issued, though, get what objectively works the best for you.
I can shoot a Glock reasonably well but it feels like a 2×4 in my hand. And it’s not just about my feels, it’s also about the fact that I have a very hard time preventing the gun from shifting during recoil. The M&P fixes that. The grip is more aggressive, it’s curved to accommodate an actual human hand, and equally important, it’s small enough for me. I can’t say enough good things about the ergonomics of the M&P 2.0.
And that doesn’t just go for the grip. The reversible magazine release is well designed, being large and prominent enough to hit reliably. The 2.0 version of the M&P has an ambidextrous slide stop/release lever, and the general feel of the thing. It’s a well-engineered pistol.
The M&P line includes numerous other variations, including the full-size, 4.25” barrel smith and wesson m&p 9 here, a Compact, 4” barrel model (also pictured here) and a long-slide, 5” model. M&Ps are available in 9mm. 40 S&W, and .45 ACP. The longer, full-sized magazines can be shared with the Compact M&Ps of like caliber. An OEM grip sleeve, similar to the one on the 8-round Shield magazines is available to extend the Compact’s grip surface when using the longer mags.
The double-stack M&P pistols are available with or without a thumb safety. Though I have opted not to go with the safety on my M&Ps, the safety is well executed and not unlike a 1911 thumb safety.
If you don’t like something about your M&P there’s a lot you can do about it. As one of the most popular pistols on the market, just about every option under the sun is available to you. Nearly everyone makes holsters for the M&P. The accessory rail supports all manner of lights and lasers. Sights of all stripe including night sights, fiber optics, plain black sights are available all day long. Cruz azul vs america 2020 internal parts – most notably from Apex Tactical Specialities – can fix just about any problem, real or perceived – that you might have with your M&P.
My only complaint? Why didn’t they give this thing an easier name – is it M&P 2.0 9mm, or Smith and wesson m&p 9 2.0? And if you just say M&P nowadays is it clear that you’re talking about the 2.0 model? That’s probably only a problem that writers worry about, so I’ll let it slide, I suppose, but it does follow S&W’s tradition of really, really complex naming conventions.
The M&P is about as good as a pistol gets these days. Available in a broad array of sizes and with a number of options, it is a reliable, accurate, and good-looking pistol. Though I still don’t like the trigger, I really like everything else about the M&P9 2.0, and wouldn’t hesitate to carry one.
S&W M&P9 M2.0 Pros and Cons
- Extremely Reliable
- Very Customizable
- Shootable, Ergonomic Grip
- Well-Designed Controls
- Really Crappy OEM Trigger
Outstanding – as good as anything on the market today.
Though decently shootable the M&P is a long, spongy trigger that makes a Glock feel like a custom 1911.
One of the nicest full-sized guns to shoot. The only thing really docking points here is that dang trigger.
One of the best feeling, most comfortable pistols out there.
An average price for an above average pistol.

Smith & Wesson M&P
This article is about the semi-automatic pistol line. For other uses, see Smith & Wesson M&P (disambiguation).
The Smith & Wesson M&P (Military and Police) is a polymer-framed, short recoil operated, locked breech semi-automatic pistol introduced in the summer of 2005 by the American company Smith & Wesson. It uses a Browning-type locking system. While targeted at law enforcement agencies, the M&P is also widely available on the commercial market.
The M&P is a hybrid evolution of the Smith & Wesson Sigma and Smith & Wesson SW99 design but does not share parts compatibility with the Sigma. The M&P design has an improved trigger and enhanced ergonomics that allow for end-user customization. An industry standard Picatinny rail and a higher grip has been afforded with an improved grip and beavertail. Many of the ergonomic study elements that had been incorporated into the Sigma and the Smith & Wesson SW99 were brought over to the M&P. The improved trigger weight and feel and the unique takedown method (not requiring a dry-fire pull of the trigger) were meant to set the M&P apart from the popular Glock pistols.
The M&P is a striker-firedsemi-automatic pistol. This trigger system prevents the firearm from discharging unless the trigger is fully depressed, even if the pistol is dropped. An internal lock and/or magazine disconnect are available as options and an optional external thumb safety became available in 2009.
The pistol frame is made out of Zytel polymer reinforced with a stainless steel chassis. The pistol comes with four removable and interchangeable grip inserts and features a 108° grip angle. The slide and barrel are made of stainless steel, that after hardening is treated with a proprietary nitriding process called Melonite. The Melonite process produces a matte gray non-glare surface with a 68 Rockwell C surface hardness rating. The pistol has a low slide profile which holds the barrel axis close to the shooter's hand and makes the M&P more comfortable to shoot by reducing muzzle rise and allowing faster aim recovery in rapid shooting sequence. The slide has four contact points with the frame. This was done to make the rail system self cleaning, by leaving room for any dirt or small foreign objects to fall out of the weapon.
As the slide of the pistol enters battery, the striker engages the sear. At this point, the sear is held back in a partially cocked condition. When the trigger of the M&P is pulled, the trigger bar first engages the firing pin safety plunger, lifting it upward, and releasing firing pin safety. At the rearward p320 owb holster of the trigger bar's travel, it engages the sear. The sear is rotated downward by the trigger bar, fully cocking, then releasing the striker. The striker makes contact with the primer of the chambered round, which in turn ignites the gunpowder and propels the bullet forward. According to M&P gunsmith Dan Burwell, the angle on the rear face of the sear creates a camming action against the striker. This camming action moves the striker to the rear very slightly during the trigger pull, thus finishing the "cocking". This system is similar to the partially tensioned striker found in the Glock series of pistols. When the pistol cycles for the next shot, the striker will be automatically pre-set in a 98% cocked position. Because the striker is only 98% cocked prior to the trigger being pulled, Smith & Wesson classifies the M&P's action as "striker fired (double action only)".
The M&P factory trigger is of the jointed type and has a trigger travel of 7.6 mm (0.3 in) and is rated at 29 N (6.5 lbf). The M&P45c models have a slightly higher rated trigger pull of 31 N (7.0 lbf). The competition oriented M&P40 Pro Series have a reduced trigger pull of 20 N (4.5 lbf) due to the installation of a Smith & Wesson performance center sear. Massachusetts (MA) approved models have a trigger pull of 45 N (10 lbf). The pistols are delivered with two magazines.
The standard iron sights are of the three dot type and made of steel. Both the front and rear sights are dove-tailed into the slide, and can be horizontally drifted to adjust for windage correction. An integrated Picatinny rail can be found underneath the slide on the front of the frame for attaching tactical lights, lasers and other accessories.
There are ten-round magazine versions of each pistol available for the California, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Australian, and Canadian markets. Novak tritium night sights are an available option for both the full-sized and compact versions. Another optional accessory is the stainless steel lanyard pin. The new pin replaces the original solid plastic pin with one that has a stainless steel ring embedded for use with a lanyard.
The M&P is available in 9×19mm Parabellum. 357 SIG. 380 ACP. 40 S&W, and .45 ACP, with barrel lengths of 79, 89, 102, 104, 108, 114, or 127 mm (3.1, 3.5, 4.0, 4.1, 4.3, 4.5, or 5.0 in).
The M&P9 JG is a standard size Champion series variant named for Julie Golob and fitted with a Warren Tactical rear sight and a fiber optic front sight. Besides the three standard black grip inserts it comes with two small and medium-sized pink grip inserts. A portion of the proceeds from sale of these models will go to a breast cancer awareness charity and an awareness ribbon is etched on the slide of the pistol.
In 2007 the full-size .45 ACP version of the M&P was introduced sporting a 114 mm (4.5 in) barrel. This model also won Handgun of the Year in 2007.
In 2008, Smith & Wesson introduced new versions of the M&P: the M&P45 Mid-size, the M&P45 Compact, the M&P9L, and the M&P Pro Series. The M&P45 Mid-size sports a 102 mm (4.0 in) barrel and a full-sized grip, and the M&P45 Compact targets the concealed carry market with its 4" barrel and shorter grip (with eight or ten-round capacity).
In 2011, Smith & Wesson released the M&P22, a cosmetically similar handgun chambered in .22 Long Rifle. The internal construction and blowback operation of this rimfire cartridge variant is the same as the Walther P22, which Smith & Wesson used to import into the United States, and completely differs from the center fire M&P variants. Rather than the three-dot sights found on other models, the M&P22 has a single dot on the front sight and notch rear that is adjustable for elevation and windage. In 2013 the scaled-down M&P22 Compact was released.
In 2012, Smith & Wesson introduced the M&P Shield in 9mm and .40 S&W. The Shield is a subcompact single-stack magazine variant of the M&P line. The Shield has roughly the same silhouette as the M&P Compact but is considerably thinner at less than 1-inch in width. The Shield is the first M&P to incorporate an improved trigger with positive reset. In 2016 a .45 ACP variant Shield was added to Smith and Wesson's product line. The .45 ACP Shield variant has a 5.1 mm (0.2 in) longer barrel, measuring in at top length of 84 mm (3.3 in), and exhibits larger overall dimensions.
In 2014, Smith & Wesson introduced the M&P Bodyguard 380 in .380 ACP. The M&P Bodyguard is functionally identical to the previous released Bodyguard 380, which it replaces. The M&P-branded Bodyguard removes the integrated laser sight of the previous pistol and brings the aesthetics in line with the rest of the M&P product line. Unlike the rest of the M&P pistols, the M&P Bodyguard is not striker-fired. It is a more traditional double-action-only hammer-fired pistol intended for personal protection, concealed carry or as a law enforcement "back-up" gun.
In 2017, Smith & Wesson introduced the M&P M2.0 series. Changes include a full-length steel chassis, a rough textured grip, and the improved trigger system of the Pro series.
In 2018, Smith & Wesson introduced the M&P 380 Shield EZ. As the name suggests, the Shield EZ has a number of convenience features including an easy-to-rack slide and an easy-to-load magazine. In late 2019, Smith & Wesson added a 9mm offering to the Shield EZ line. Both the .380 and 9mm variants feature an internal hammer.
In spring 2021, Smith & Wesson introduced the M&P Shield Plus in 9mm. An evolution of the M&P Shield, the M&P Shield Plus, among other improvements, utilizes a double-stack magazine to increase clip size at the sacrifice of a slight increase in width.
In November 2021, Smith & Wesson introduced the M&P M2.0 chambered in 10mm Auto to the M&P M2.0 family. Smith & Wesson offers a 4.0 in (101.6 mm) barrel compact model and a larger 4.6 in (116.8 mm) barrel model. Both models with have a 15-round magazine capacity and are built on the M&P45 M2.0 frame. The M&P M2.0 10mm Auto features a new M2.0 flat face trigger and comes with an optics ready slide from the factory.
