Over its 34-year history, the Bank of South Carolina has slowly and methodically expanded its branch network from the peninsula to Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, Summerville and, most recently, North Charleston.

James Island is the next stop.

The Charleston-based lender plans to open its sixth retail office after renovating a former Wells Fargo location at 1730 Maybank Highway, between Folly Road and Wappoo Creek Drive.

The branch is expected to open in the second quarter of 2023.

CEO Fleetwood Hassell said James Island is "a sort of a donut hole" with the community bank's brick-and-mortar network. The vacant space it's taking over historically attracted an "excellent deposit base" under its previous occupant, he added.

“This new office ... will not only allow us to better serve our existing clients on James Island and the surrounding islands, but it affords us the opportunity to introduce our kind of banking to new clients as well,” he said.

Wells Fargo, which has been consolidating overlapping branches for years, closed the Maybank Highway office earlier this year. It then sold it for $1.5 million in June to a local investment group, according to Charleston County land records.

"We were interested in buying the property, but then we eventually learned it had been purchased," Hassell said. "It didn't stay on the market long."

It's been about two years since the Bank of South Carolina expanded into North Charleston, giving it its fifth retail office. Hassel said the Highway 78 branch at the Ingleside development "continues to grow and prosper."

The bank also announced its latest financial results, saying third-quarter profit edged up 1.4 percent to $1.73 million from the same period last year. Year-to-date earnings for Bank of South Carolina Corp. increased 10 percent to $5.2 million. Total assets jumped 30 percent to $692 million from September 2020.

Hassell said he was "encouraged" by the latest financial results "despite relatively low loan demand," especially from commercial customers.

"There is so much liquidity in our system, in the economy, that people really aren’t borrowing," he said.

Also, the Federal Reserve's policy to keep interest rates "razor thin" to help the COVID-19 economic recovery continues to keep profit margins tight. Hassel said the Bank of South Carolina was able to counter that with an increase in fee income it earned from originating mortgages and processing federal Paycheck Protection Program loans.

"We hope we will see better a interest rate environment perhaps next year, but most likely in 2022. Well see what action the Fed takes," he said.

The central bank is expected to elaborate more about it monetary policy plans Wednesday, after its Open Market Committee wraps up its next meeting.

Black and white photo of the South Carolina Bank of Charleston, circa 1930s.

The South Carolina National Bank of Charleston is one of the most important buildings on Broad Street, South Carolina's oldest commercial street. It has been in continuous use as a bank since it was constructed in 1817. In the early 19th century, Charleston ranked highly enough as a commercial center to have a branch of the Second Bank of the United States, whose charter was drawn up by John C. Calhoun, the State's preeminent statesman. This financial institution was the second attempt at a national bank; The Bank of north carolina charleston sc Bank of the United States had also established a branch in Charleston, now City Hall. This Second Bank branch, that of Discount and Deposit, was the only bank in the city equipped to handle the international transactions so crucial to the rice trade, a mainstay of the Lowcountry economy. Stucco covers the masonry walls of the two story building. The smooth, clean exterior is accentuated by simple arched and rectangular window and door openings. A gold leaf eagle still adorns the gable of the front of the bank, as it has since capital one union plus bill pay. The lobby, also in continuous use since the bank's opening, features more elaborately carved details, and has been altered only with the addition of lights and modern teller windows.

The newly chartered Bank of Charleston purchased the building in 1836, shortly after the Second Bank failed following the withdrawl of all government deposits by President Andrew Jackson. By 1848 the Bank of Charleston became a regional power with affiliates in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and Louisiana. The building was extended to the north in 1856 and the Board of Director's Room added. It is an elaborate room with coved ceiling, pilasters with Corinthian capitals, and marbelized details (wood painted to simulate tan and black marble). The bank managed to survive financially during the Civil War and Reconstruction, despite a $1.5 million loan to the Confederacy, and by 1887 had recovered sufficiently to become a Federal Depository. In 1926 the Bank of Charleston merged with local banks in Greenville and Columbia to form the South Carolina National Bank, which in turn was absorbed by Wachovia in the mid-1990s.
