Season Dates

Great Island Cabins are currently OPEN for the season. Check the Park Conditions page for updates on Great Island cabins and the availability of other amenities (gas and ice sales, bath house, etc). Both barrier islands, North Core Banks and South Core Banks, are open for vehicle/tent camping as well as surf fishing, shelling, etc. Check directly with the vehicle ferries for their operating schedules.

In order to create the safest conditions that we can for our guests, it is extremely important that all occupants of rental cabins are checked out no later than 10:00 am on their date of departure and incoming guests will not be allowed to check in prior to 2:00 pm. This will allow our staff adequate time to clean & disinfect rental cabins before the next occupant arrives. Thank you for your cooperation during this time.

2021 Season -- Great Island Cabins will be OPEN from March 12, 2021 - November 27, 2021

Reservations

NOTE: Cabin reservations begin for the 2021 season: January 6, 2021 at 10:00 am online at Recreation.gov

Reservations for cabins at Cape Lookout National Seashore can be made one of two ways:

  • Online at Recreation.gov
  • By phone at 877-444-6777 (TDD: 877-833-6777)
    Reservations are accepted by phone from 10:00 AM to midnight EST

Please Note: Customers who cancel a cabin reservation less than 14 days beforethe arrival date will pay a $10.00 service fee AND forfeit the first night's use fee. Refunds resulting from storm closures will be handled on a case by case basis.

  • Walk-ups can rent available cabins at the Cabin Office during business hours (8 am - 3 pm)

Check In / Check Out
Pick up the keys for your rental cabin at the office located in the cabin area.

Check In Time 2:00 PM Check-ins will be delayed from 1:00 pm until 2 pm to allow for cleaning under new covid protocols. You will not be allowed to place personal items on the porches while you wait.
Check Out Time 10:00 AM Check-out is absolutely at 10 am -- no exceptions! -- in order to allow for cleaning under the covid protocols.

Note: if arriving after 3:00 PM, call the Cabin Office in your cabin area ahead of time to arrange for your keys and access to your cabin after the office closes.

Pets in Cabins

Visitors who are renting one of the cabins may keep their pet in the cabin or on the porch unattended as long as the pet is kept in acrate. Pets should be inside at night to ovoid encounters with raccoons.

Pets are not allowed inside any other buildings in the park.

Vehicles on the Islands

All vehicles on the islands must obtain the ORV Beach Driving Permit. Visitors renting a cabin will have an unpaved parking area near their cabin with space for two vehicles. Additional parking is available with a permit (ask at the cabin office) in the cabin area's unpaved long-term parking lot.

There are no roads in the national seashore: all driving is done on loose sand. Four-wheel drive is highly recommended. Information on the ORV Beach Driving Permit and driving on the islands can be found on the Beach Driving page.
