The Central Pantry, a partner agency of the Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri, has found a new home.
The pantry eventually will move into the location of the Moser's grocery story on Business Loop 70 West. The Food Bank purchased the location after Moser's made plans to move into a new store in the Westbury Village development on Scott Boulevard.
More: Website offers a possible recipe for food security
"When Moser's started considering their project of moving, we were keeping an eye out for a chance to move the Central Pantry," Food Bank Communication and Marketing Coordinator Seth Wolfmeyer said. "We formed a connection there and it seemed like a perfect fit opportunity."
Moser's will operate from the Business Loop for about another nine months. After that, renovations will be needed before the Central Pantry can open there, tentatively in early 2023.
The location will allow for storage of more food items and have better accessibility, the Food Bank noted in a news release.
"For years, The Food Bank dreamed of finding a new home for Central Pantry — a home with the space and accessibility needed for us to improve our work to address hunger in our community," Food Bank President and CEO Lindsay Lopez said in the release. "Now, we've finally taken the first steps to turn that dream into a reality."
The Central Pantry's current home is on Big Bear Boulevard off Rangeline Street and has not had an adequate scope and size for its mission in recent years, Wolfmeyer said.
Moser's Foods hopes to create a more modern and efficient retail space for the Westbury Village development, owner Roger Moser said in the release.
"The Food Bank and I also want to thank Paul Land and Plaza Commercial Realty for orchestrating this opportunity for our organizations to work together," he said.
More: Columbia nonprofits still expect tight financial belts in 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic
Because of its larger size, space at the Central Pantry will be used as overflow storage from the Food Bank. The Business Loop location is more than double the square-footage of the Big Bear Boulevard location, Wolfmeyer said.
"We often sometimes get constrained at our main location (on Vandiver), as well, so we'd be able to use the Central Pantry for some overflow," he said.
It will allow for the pantry to provide more perishable food items, such as fresh and frozen produce and meat.
"There was a movement that started about 10 years ago where the focus (for) Feeding America — our parent organization — and us was to start to share more nutritional foods, most prominent among them fresh and frozen foods," Wolfmeyer said.
Those foods are the most desirable and nutritional that the Food Bank can provide, considering them Foods to Encourage, the Food Bank noted in the release.
While the Central Pantry does provide fresh and frozen foods, storage is much more limited based on the facility's current size, Wolfmeyer said.
Food Bank staff are excited about the eventual move, he added.
"We are all thrilled to know we will be able to grow Central Pantry and really expand our efforts in Boone County," Wolfmeyer said. "Our staff at the Central Pantry are thrilled. They have been working in cramped conditions for quite a while."
More: Local philanthropic partnership to continue amid pandemic
The Central Pantry is a partner agency with the Food Bank and serves more than 10,000 Boone County residents per month.
Numbers served increased last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"There were a few months where we saw as much as 1,000-2,000 more people coming to the Central Pantry," Wolfmeyer said. "The challenges of 2020 really reminded us there is a need to expand and improve Central Pantry so that we can better help people."
The Food Bank also hopes the Central Pantry move will increase awareness of its work and importance, with the new facility representing a substantial improvement in resources for food-insecure residents of Boone County.

Food bank's Buddy Pack program faces cuts, elimination
The Buddy Pack program at the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri is in trouble.
By Sarah Tucker (Columbia, Mo.)
Started in 2005, the Buddy Pack program provides a backpack of nutritious food to 8,600 kids on weekends in 32 Missouri counties. Due to increasing food and fuel costs, the program is facing cuts and possible elimination.
To support the program, the food bank is starting the “Adopt a Buddy” initiative, where donors “sponsor” a buddy pack for a child. Food Bank Communications Coordinator Rachel Ellersieck says there is some urgency behind the initiative.
“At the beginning of the school year, we estimated that it would only cost $100 to feed a child for an entire school year, but food and fuel costs have just skyrocketed for us," Ellersieck says. "They’ve increased anywhere from 15 to 30%.”
Donors can “sponsor” a buddy pack for a child by donating $180 for the year or $15 per month.
