Food Bank Friday: Penticton Salvation Army Food Bank clients increasing

The Penticton Salvation Army’s Food Bank has been busy as ever to keep up with an ever-increasing demand.

“We keep going with COVID,” said Paul Trickett, Penticton Salvation Army.

“Numbers are getting higher and higher as people are not getting the same money that they used to be getting.”

That demand has not only been caused by the ongoing pandemic but now due to the added pressure of the B.C. floods.

“The floods affect us greatly because the [grocery] stores are empty,” said Trickett.

“So we’re not getting what [grocers] would usually give us [in donations] because they have to take care of the general public as well,” said Trickett.

To keep up with the demand, what Trickett and his team need the most to continue meeting the growing need is monetary donations, he said.

While continuing to put nutritious meals on the tables for families in need now, the Penticton Salvation Army’s Food Bank volunteers are planning for a busy holiday season.

“Just our Christmas hampers alone we are preparing for over 800 this year last year we had just over 600 I believe,” said Trickett.

Attack Hunger

The Attack Hunger Campaign presented by IG Wealth Management returns to its traditional roots for 2021 with food and monetary donations being accepted at the Owen Sound Attack’s first Saturday home game in December, on December 4th against the Flint Firebirds.

This year’s event goal is to see fans donate thousands of pounds non-perishable food items and raising valuable funds for the Salvation Army Food Bank in Owen Sound.

“Our involvement in the community continues to be a priority for us, and we continue to work hard to be involved while following pandemic protocols” said Attack Manager of Marketing and Communications Greg Hoddinott. “We are extremely excited to bring another sense of normalcy to our season with Attack Hunger Campaign moving forward in its traditional execution.”

The 2021 Attack Hunger Campaign will look a lot more normal with donations being collected on a game night as well as at three main drop-off locations the IG Wealth Management office on the east side, the Attack office downtown and Foodland on the west side. Donations of non-perishable food items will be collected at these locations beginning November 29 until December 6, although they can be made prior to and after these dates as well. IG Wealth Management will be distributing Attack Hunger donation bags at the Attacks home game on Saturday, November 27 against the London Knights.

With some people still not feeling comfortable with making a physical food donation and others who may be looking to make a monetary donation, the Attack Hunger Campaign has made sure there is still a way for everyone to participate this year. If you want to make a donation before the event you can visit the Attack Shack online store and follow the Attack Hunger link to make a monetary donation to this year’s campaign. All donations over $10 will receive a charitable tax receipt directly from the Salvation Army. If you want to make a donation at the game the Salvation Army will be onsite with their kettles collecting monetary donations.

The need continues to grow at food banks across Ontario and specifically in Owen Sound. Since the pandemic was declared in March 2020 $1,001,890.00 of practical food assistance has been provided in Owen Sound. 1 in every 3 food clients in Ontario are children.

How to Participate:

From November 29th to December 6th, you can:

Physical Food Donations: Three drop off locations available.

IG Wealth Management Office: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm (733 9th Ave. East, Unit 1, Owen Sound, ON)

Owen Sound Attack Office: Monday to Friday, 9am to 12pm & 1pm to 4pm (1900 3rd Ave. East, Owen Sound, ON)

Foodland: Monday to Sunday, 8am to 10pm (915 10th Street West, Owen Sound, ON)

Corporate Donations:

We will be working with the business community of Owen Sound and surrounding area to help increase the donations to this great cause.

Any businesses interested in donating should contact:
Owen Sound Attack: Greg Hoddinott, Manager of Marketing & Communications (519) 371-7452 Ext. 22 or [email protected]

Individual Monetary Donations: Through the Attack Shack website
All monetary donations over $10 will be eligible for a charitable tax receipt from the Salvation Army
Everyone making a monetary donation will be entered in a draw for the chance to win 1 of 5 prizes. If you donate you will be automatically entered.

BAY CITY - A bone-chilling cold didn't keep more than 100 people from lining up Thursday for the first of this year's monthly free produce handouts at the Salvation Army, 401 10th St. in Bay City's Third Ward.

The organization partnered with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan and Hidden Harvest to hand out more than 8,000 pounds of produce and bread free-of-charge to the public.

Pallets filled with tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and various breads welcomed those willing to brave the cold to fill their carts and cars with free grocery items.

"When those trucks come in, it's such a wide variety," Salvation Army volunteer Connie Poole said. "It's everything anybody needs."

Poole says she recognizes some of her neighbors from the surrounding Third Ward residential area, and years ago made use of the service herself. She's been volunteering with the organization since before their current building was constructed in 2010.

On warmer summer days when the Food Bank is able to provide more produce, the line for food handouts rings around the block, Poole said. While most of the visitors reside in Bay City, they can come from as far as far as Au Gres and Pinconning.

"It doesn't look like much to you or I," Poole said. "But to them, it's a lot."

The turnout this Thursday was around 120, according to Poole, but it's not unusual for the organization to serve 150 people or more in just a few hours.

"People will come for three hours, by the end we'll have two or three pallets left," Poole said. "We don't want anything left. We want it all to go."

Leftover produce and bakery items are used by the Salvation Army's soup kitchen at the 401 10th St. building, where bread donated by Hidden Harvest is also available on a daily basis.

The monthly food handouts will take place at 9 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month until weather becomes too cold to work outside, according to Office Manager Dawn Hunter.

"We have so many families with children in this area. We have a lot of single mothers, moms without access to transportation," Poole said. "This makes a big difference for the area."

“Just our Christmas hampers alone we are preparing for over 800 this year last year we had just over 600 I believe,” said Trickett.

Hamilton Salvation Army needs more tinned tomatoes

While some charities are refusing to take tinned tomatoes, one Hamilton food bank is publically pleading for donations of the food item.

Stuff reports the Hamilton Salvation Army is bucking the trend of disparaging tinned tomatoes and chickpeas, instead asking for more of them, as it's running low.

The controversy began when Auckland-based refuge charity The Aunties banned tinned tomatoes, saying it would rather receive items it actually need.

Hamilton Salvation Army food bank coordinator Christine Canty now says some charities are being "a bit fussy", and she would gratefully accept items like tinned tomatoes, lentils and chickpeas.

"There's never anything that we say that we don't need or that we can't use," she told Stuff.

Every Salvation Army food parcel contains cans of tomatoes, lentils and chickpeas, alongside other household staples.

Usually, each box contains two cans of tomatoes, but due to a shortage, Ms Canty says she can only manage one per parcel.

She's asking for more of the canned fruits and legumes, as they're necessary for low-budget cooking, and an important addition to meals like dahl, mince or pasta bakes.

Helen Gibbs of Dieticians NZ told Stuff that families and children in a refuge situation often need foods that would make them feel safe during a difficult time.

She recommends contacting charities before donating to see what they need before bringing it in.

Donations of non-perishable food items will be collected at these locations beginning November 29 salvation army hamilton food bank December 6, although they can be made prior to and after these dates as well. IG Wealth Management will be distributing Attack Hunger donation bags at the Attacks home game on Saturday, November 27 against the London Knights.

If you want to make a donation before the event you can visit the Attack Shack online store and follow the Attack Hunger link to make a monetary donation to this year’s campaign. All donations over $10 will receive a charitable tax receipt directly from the Salvation Army.

We have a lot of single mothers, salvation army hamilton food bank without access to transportation," Poole said. "This makes a big difference for the area."
