We found the drugstore BB cream that is better than most foundations

The drugstore BB cream that is better than most foundations?! That is a BOLD statement. Hear me out.

I have very uneven skin. I have acne scars, freckles and sun damage, which usually makes for a foundation nightmare. Whenever I tried to get color-matched at Sephora, they always gave me the most highly pigmented cream foundations, which they then layered with concealer, pressed powder, contour, and blush—and it still never quite looked like my skin color. And then I discovered NYX’s BB cream.

YES, NYX! The beloved brand of #makeupobsessed teens the world over! The company famous for making cheaper versions of cosmetic department products. The brand that is shockingly amazing despite its low price-point.

When I bought this $13 tube of BB cream from Target I was expecting to use it exclusively for running errands and other occasions where I don’t have to look that good. I was expecting typical BB cream bullshit, namely, a very subtle tint that only looks good on people with already flawless skin.

But boy was I wrong!

This BB cream has become my new go-to foundation. Day, night, whatever. The coverage is unexpectedly great.

It has a dewy finish that you can mattify with powder, or leave as is for full J.Lo glow. It doesn’t contain SPF or any of the other benefits of most BB creams, but that’s okay because I wear moisturizer with SPF under it anyway. The downside is that it only comes in three colors, but it does do that typical BB cream thing where the color subtly adjusts once it touches your skin. For reference, I’ve used other pricier BB and CC creams before, like this one by Smashbox, which is $42, and I swear all they did was make my skin a little orange.

Pro tip: You must apply it like a foundation, meaning, with a beauty blender or a brush.

If you try to apply it with your hands like you would a lotion or a typical BB cream, it will just spread all over your face and give you no coverage. I squirt about two dollops onto my hand and apply it with a beauty blender.

Here I am without makeup on, with the BB cream only (I’m wearing color “nude”), and after adding the rest of my makeup application (concealer, translucent powder, contour powder, blush, mascara, gloss, brows).

Credit: Madison Vanderberg, HelloGiggles

It gives a subtle but pigmented coverage that I think is perfect for everyday wear. I’m wearing a full face in the final image, and I don’t think I look that caked-on, right? My mom once said that I looked “lit from within.” I swear to god she said that.

I literally buy this BB cream in bulk and have been using it for over a year. Try it out and let us know what you think.

10 Best Drugstore BB Creams 2021

It’s great to have choices in the makeup bag and in ours, we love having the option of using a fountain when the occasion calls for it or a decent BB cream for the lighter, carefree days when we “don’t want to look like we’re wearing makeup.”

Every major makeup manufacturer seems to make a line of BB creams these days, and if you’re not interested in spending 40 bucks a pop, then you’ll love the brands that we have on our list below.

These are some of the best drugstore BB cream options for those of you who want to affordably supply your makeup bag.

Can’t afford Clinique or Estée Lauder? No problem! You’ll find some excellent alternatives here along with some great tips about using BB cream.

BB Cream vs Foundation

If you’re new to BB cream, you may be wondering what exactly is the difference between it and foundation.

  • Main Difference. The main difference between BB cream and foundation is the amount of coverage it provides you with (BB cream provides you with lighter coverage, foundation is heavier).

You do have fewer color choices with BB cream since their designed to blend in with your natural skin tone once you apply them, but for some, this presents a real challenge since they have an in-between coloring.

  • Why Use It? When Do I Use It? For daily use, BB cream is awesome. If you’re on the go and need products that allow you to have a fast makeup routine or if you’re headed to the beach and want some added protection, this is the product for you.

It also acts as a sunscreen and protectant, which is why many use it as their daily “foundation.”

  • Other Benefits. Another reason to opt for a BB cream is the fact that it does much more for your skin than a foundation does: it hydrates better, acts as a primer, contains anti-aging ingredients, helps prevent blemishes, brightens and soothes.

These drugstore brands also cost less, which means you can save your more expensive, higher-quality brands for those special occasions!

Top 10 Drugstore BB Creams Ultimate Table

Finding the Right Color

As we mentioned, BB creams aren’t always easy to match to your skin tone. They typically come in fewer shades than foundations do, which means that you may have to choose one based on the range of colors the brand provides rather than other factors.

  • Test on Your Face. We don’t get why so many makeup consultants at the stores still dab the makeup in question on your hand! The color of your hand is different from the color of your face, and since the product will be applied to your face, that is where it should be tested.

In order to find the right color, make sure the person assisting you does some test patches between your face and neck. If you’re already wearing makeup, clear off a small patch (you can fill it in later) in order to get an “accurate reading.”

  • Check Return Policy. If you’re worried about getting the wrong color (testing in-store under artificial lighting is way different than the natural light outdoors), find out what the return policy is.

See if you can get some testers first if you’re worried!

Q & A

Here are some of the top questions (and their answers) when it comes to choosing BB cream.

  • How to Apply? Use Your Fingers. One of the things we love about BB cream is that you put it on just as you would a moisturizer or a facial cream: with your fingers.

Some of you might prefer to use a brush or a sponge if you want extra coverage, but it’s actually better to use your fingers since your body heat makes it easier to apply (smoother coverage).

…however…

If you have oily skin, then a sponge might be the best option since the oil on your fingers may create problems (transferring oil from your hands to your face).

  • Do I Need to Set It with a Powder? Nope! This is another reason to love BB cream. You use fewer products, which means you save money in the long run.

Powder might come in handy when using concealer, which we’ll discuss next.

  • And Concealer? Of course? If you have dark circles or blemishes to conceal, then apply it after you’ve applied the BB cream.

You might need to spend a little more time blending with a sponge and you’ll want to set the concealer with a powder.

Top 5 Best Drugstore BB Cream Reviews

1. NYX Cosmetics BB Cream

nyx1

Left to Right: Nude, Natural, Golden

For those of you who want to hydrate and prime your skin while evening out your skin tone, NYX’s BB cream is a great product. Not the right one for all of you out there since it only has three color choices, but if they match, you’ll love this product!

Fair-skinned users seem to have the best luck with it and those who have tried many other creams find that this one is the answer to their BB cream woes. Great on sensitive skin, too!

If you’ve already tried this and it wasn’t right for you, then head on down to check out the next few BB creams.

2. MISSHA M Perfect Cover BB Cream

Left to Right: Bright Beige #13, Light Beige #21, Natural Beige #23
Honey Beige #27, Golden Beige #31

One of the reasons that Missha is one of the best drugstore BB cream brands on our list is because of the color choices. They have six!

This provides you with 42 SPF (awesome coverage and sun protection at the beach, at the pool or any other body of water outdoors), it provides you with excellent coverage so you can hide blemishes and other imperfections (more coverage than some other BB creams out there) and it helps diminish wrinkles!

3. Maybelline New York Dream Pure BB Cream

If you’re in need of a BB cream that helps you control your acne, then check out the Maybelline Dream Pure line.

As we mentioned…

The color options make it easier for those with darker skin tones to find a match and this particular formula contains2% salicylic acid,

which is the highest percentage that you can get without a prescription.

4. SKIN79 Super Plus Beblesh Balm Triple Functions

Left to Right: Green, Gold, Pink, Orange, Purple

This is a Korean brand that launched in 2006.

Each one offers you different benefits (purple for color correction and blemish coverage, pink tones and helps control oily skin, green (?) and orange helps those with acne scars, redness and large pores).

The Gold (featured here) is great for smoothing out your skin and providing moisture for those with dry skin.

We searched the Skin79 website but couldn’t find info on the green option. Discontinued perhaps? The list of ingredients on the back of each one is different and some offer different levels of SPF.

Overall, this is best for those with pale skin. You’ll notice that the label says “whitening,” so if you have dark skin, skip this product.

5. SkinActive Miracle Skin Perfector BB Cream

   Left: Light/Medium                Right: Medium/Deep

Hmmm. We’re definitely not excited about the color selection here (they only have two!), but if your skin color closely matches either one, then this won’t be an issue for you!

In terms of coverage, this is pretty good. It is designed for combination and oily skin, so if you use it and the product agrees with you, then you’re likely to notice a more even skin tone, less shine and smaller pores. The “less shine” factor is what hooks most users. It makes a big difference!

Some find that the Light/Medium coloring has more of a yellow tint to it, so if you have more of a pinkish/white skin tone, this may not work for you.

Trial and error! Test it first for a color match. If it doesn’t work, check out some of the other great products on our list to find the one that works for your color and skin type!

Over the past few months, I've reviewed different drugstore BB creams, and thought I'd do a roundup of them all. Please let me know if you need more information/swatches of a product(s). As always, just because I dislike a product doesn't mean you will too--try it & you might like it!

What are BB Creams?
BB means "beauty balm" or "blemish balm."

What do they do?
These creams are a mix of skin care and a tinted moisturizer. It's supposed to save a step in your makeup routine by marrying skin plus foundation products. BB creams have many claims, such as hydrating the skin, blurring imperfections, and evening out skin tone. BB creams are meant to be worn alone, and not as a primer, and some wear powder to set. Don't use a moisturizer with these. Just apply with fingers, a sponge, or foundation brush. They're great for days when you want a satin finish, but without all the cakey-looking makeup. I have really enjoyed them during the summer and on days when I don't want to wear a lot of makeup (but want to wear something).

What do they NOT do?
BB creams will not provide the same coverage as a foundation, and are comparable to a tinted moisturizer in that respect. I'm always disappointed to read reviews that fault BB creams because the reviewers are expecting total coverage.

Reviews begin clockwise

Garnier Skin Review (click for more comprehensive review)
  •  $11-13
  • two shades: light-medium and medium-dark
  • dewy, satin finish
  • medium coverage
  • moisturizing
  • vitamin c (note: I'm allergic to citric acid, but have had no effects from this cream)
  • lasts all day
  • It smells at first
  • Oily skin--might want to avoid EDIT: There is now a formula for combo/oily skin
  • spf 15
  • most product

Maybelline Dream Fresh (original review here)

  • around $7.44
  • 5shades
  • SPF 30--the best I've seen on drugstore BB creams
  • It allegedly: Blurs imperfections, Brightens, Evens skin tone, Smoothes, Hydrate Enhances
  • creamy texture
  • light coverage
  • no breakouts or offensive smell
  • dry-normal skin
    • Great, cheap alternative to tinted moisturizer, but not the finish of a BB cream (would repurchase for tinted moisturizer purposes only)...this BB cream is a favorite among many of you.

L'Oreal Youth Code BB Cream

  • $15-16
  • Allegedly Evens, Illuminates, Perfects, Moisturizes, Corrects
  • same smell as Garnier, just not as thick
  • light-med coverage
  • sheer tint with slight luminosity
  • SPF 15
  • most product
  • 2 shades
    • Slightly more expensive version of Garnier but a great alternative for those who found the Garnier too thick of a formula (not repurchasing)

Cover Girl BB Cream

  • $7
  • This is the same exact product as CG Smoothers. This is not a BB cream, just a tinted moisturizer. Don't fall for it!
  • Allegedly: moisturizing. light coverage, lasts up to 8 hours
  • SPF 15
  • I cannot find a link to buy this online--it's the same product, just in different packaging. I thought I'd mention that again.
    • This works as a great tinted moisturizer, but is in no way a BB cream. (wouldn't repurchase due to the fact I feel duped! Grr.)

L'Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream (original review here)

  • $8.24-10
  • 4 shades
  • It allegedly Hydrates, Corrects, Evens, Perfects, Vitamin E, 24 hour hydration
  • Starts off grey, like traditional BB cream but then blends to shade you purchased
  • BB=beauty beads that hurt my face...use with a foundation brush instead
  • best for those with oily skin
  • reflective shimmer
  • med coverage
  • no spf
    • Many love this product, but I don't due to those exfoliating bbs. (not repurchasing)

Revlon Photoready BB Cream

  • This product came out in late November/early December 2012.
  • 1 oz for $13.99
  • 3 shades, but I like how the display had the three shades distributed amongst their regular shades, insuring which one might look best on you. For example, I wear Natural Beige, and was matched up to the light medium shade.
  • According to the website it hydrates, smoothes, covers, blurs flaws, and protects.
  • SPF 30
  • dewy, satiny finish
  • light to medium coverage
  • no smell
  • best for dry and normal skin
  • This reminds me of a lighter version of the Garnier BB cream. It is still oily (moisturizing), so those with oily skin might want to avoid, but I would suggest trying it and using a matte powder to set (just make sure you can return).

Rimmel London BB Cream
  • This product came out in the US on January 2013.
  • $6 for 1 oz.
  • 3 shades: light, medium, medium-dark
  • Claims it does 9 things: primes, moisturizes, minimizes pores, conceals, covers, smooths, mattifies, brightens, and helps protect skin.
  • faint smell at first that instantly disappears
  • light to medium coverage
  • reminds me a little of Maybelline's Dreamfresh but longer lasting
  • SPF 25
  • best for oily skin, as it has a matte finish.

BB Cream (Sally's Beauty)

  • I found this for around $7 at Sally's Beauty
  • Great for oily skin
  • Comes in 3 shades
  • Matte finish
  • Light-almost medium coverage
  • I like using it as a primer.

Garnier BB Cream in Combo/Oily Skin

  • SPF 20
  • 2.0 oz
  • 3 shades: light/medium, medium/deep, deep
  • best for oily/combo skin
  • screw top cap
  • runny formula
  • +- $12 (I used a coupon for a few dollars off)
  • would repurchase, but I don't like how messy the formula is

Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream in Light to Medium

  • $12.99
  • The lightest coverage
  • lightest-feeling BB cream
  • SPF15
  • 2 colors
  • nice watermelon smell
  • wouldn't repurchase, as it is pretty much a tinted moisturizer (sent for review)
BB Cream Reviews

Pond's BB+

  • multi-tasking "beauty benefit" cream.
  • blurs imperfections
  • light coverage (a little more than some BB creams or tinted moisturizers)
  • visibly fades dark spots--thanks to Vitamin E Acetate – an antioxidant known to protect and repair skin & Glycerin – helps increase hydration.
  • SPF15.
  • isn't greasy
  • matte to satin finish
  • hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic
  • Overall, I do like it and would purchase it (sent for review consideration)
  • two shades
  • $9.99

Current Favorites : BB and CC Creams

Affiliate links

BB and CC Creams are the ultimate multi-tasking beauty products! I just love the ease of combining multiple steps into one product and depending on which formulation you chose, this one step (aka BB or CC cream) can be your moisturizer, daily sunscreen, anti-aging and brightening serum that helps correct uneven skin tone and offers sheer to almost full coverage, often taking the place of your foundation. Basically, BB and CC creams are the perfect alternative for those of us who don’t like using foundation for everyday makeup and need a one-step complexion perfecting product with skincare benefits to boot!

Today I am showcasing a few of my favorite BB and CC creams. These are the ones I reach for quite frequently and have recommended most often to my friends and readers! Let’s take a look…

Best BB and CC Creams

Amarté Natural Finish BB Cream SPF 36 – This BB cream has a buildable, medium to full coverage formula that easily covers up most of the imperfections like dark spots and light acne scars. It offers a satiny-smooth matte finish that adds a subtle healthy-skin glow without the unwanted shine and lasts all day, which makes it suitable for almost all skin types. Here is  my full review for the Amarte Natural Finish BB Cream

Amarté-Natural-Finish-BB-Cream review

Dr. Jart+ BB Bounce Beauty BalmThis BB cream comes housed in a chic, airtight  compact that is practically spill proof and easy to tuck in your purse for on-the-go touchups. I love the fluid-cream texture which provides buildable coverage that easily goes from medium to almost full and holds up really well throughout the day. Although the formula is said to be ultra-moisturizing, it has a long-lasting matte finish and feel that’s suitable for normal to combination or even oily skin types. And the SPF comes from gentle, mineral actives (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide). Check out my detailed review for the Dr.Jart+ BB Bounce Beauty Balm

Dr.-Jart-BB-Bounce-Beauty-Balm

Mirabella CC creamThis is one of the most pigmented CC creams I’ve ever tried! It provides excellent, medium to full yet natural-looking and lightweight coverage for complexion perfection in a flash! I never even have to use a concealer with this product. It also includes a few oil controlling ingredients to help keep shine at bay all day (great for oily and combo skin!). The formula offers SPF 20 but because you need so less of it, you will want to use another form of sunscreen (before applying this) during the day for adequate SPF protection. Here’s my detailed review for Mirabella CC Creme

Mirabella-CC-Cream-review

It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream SPF 50 – None of my favorite lists can be complete without an IT cosmetics product! This CC cream gives skin a gorgeous finish and stellar coverage, taking care of any redness, acne scars or dark spots almost completely without looking like I’m wearing a ton of makeup. You can check out my review here

It-Cosmetics-Your-Skin-But-Better-CC+-Cream-SPF-50-Medium

Pond’s Luminous Finish BB+ CreamThis a fabulous drugstore find! The creamy formula glides onto skin and blends easily for medium coverage of redness and dark spots. It provides a semi-matte finish that looks natural and does a good job of perking up dull, tired skin! It contains a few skin-loving ingredients like Vitamin E and Niacinamide in addition to offering broad-spectrum SPF 15. I consider this SPF as a bonus and make sure to use a sunscreen underneath to get complete sun protection.

Have you tried any of my favorite BB/CC creams? What are some of your favorites….would love to hear all about your picks in the comments!

For reference, I’ve used other pricier BB and CC creams before, like this one by Smashbox, which is $42, and I swear all they did was make my skin a little bank of america cash back rewards tip: You must apply it like a foundation, meaning, with a beauty blender or a brush.

Originating in Korea, BB creams, or "beauty balms" best coverage bb cream drugstore the next generation of foundation, delivering lighter coverage, hydration, sunscreen, and other skincare benefits such as anti-aging or brightening actives in one package. The point? To save you extra steps in your routine — meaning time, space, and money. Because they often contain moisturizing ingredients, BB creams are good for adding an extra layer of hydration for dry, dehydrated skin.

BB creams that contain sunscreen, from SPF 15 to 30 and up to 50+, provide protection against skin-damaging UV rays and can be used daily, though be sure to apply the amount recommended on the packaging directions to ensure you receive the full level of SPF listed on the bottle. For extra protection, especially during direct sun exposure, layer a BB cream on top of a face sunscreen. And what about their sisters, CC creams? CCs usually provide higher coverage, and because that can mean more pigment, BB creams may be a better choice for dry skin.

How we test BB creams

The Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab scanned the market for BB creams across price points, from drugstore to high-end brands. In the Lab, the formulas were evaluated for hydration benefits using the Corneometer device, which measures skin’s moisture levels, and level of coverage via digital imaging with the Visia Complexion Analyzer machine. Then, over 100 women tried the label-masked products at home for a week and reported their feedback on factors like how well it matched and blended into skin, evened skin tone, and covered imperfections, how long the coverage lasted, irritation, scent, and texture.

To get soft, even skin in seconds, smooth on one of the best BB creams for dry skin, as tested by GH Beauty Lab scientists and recommended by beauty experts:

    • Great, cheap alternative to tinted moisturizer, but not the finish of a BB cream (would repurchase for tinted moisturizer purposes only).this BB cream is a favorite among many of you.

L'Oreal Youth Code BB Cream

  • $15-16
  • Allegedly Evens, Illuminates, Perfects, Moisturizes, Corrects
  • same smell as Garnier, just not as thick
  • light-med coverage
  • sheer tint with slight luminosity
  • SPF 15
  • most product
  • 2 shades
    • Slightly more expensive version of Garnier but a great alternative for those who found the Garnier too thick of a formula (not repurchasing)

Cover Girl BB Cream

  • $7
  • This is the same exact product as CG Smoothers. This is not a BB cream, just a tinted moisturizer. Don't fall for it!
  • Allegedly: moisturizing. light coverage, lasts up to 8 hours
  • SPF 15
  • I cannot find a link to buy this online--it's the same product, just in different packaging. I thought I'd mention that again.
    • This works as a great tinted moisturizer, but is in no way a BB cream. (wouldn't repurchase due to the fact I feel duped! Grr.)

L'Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream (original review here)

  • $8.24-10
  • 4 shades
  • It allegedly Hydrates, Corrects, Evens, Perfects, Vitamin E, 24 hour hydration
  • Starts off grey, like traditional BB cream but then blends to shade you purchased
  • BB=beauty beads that hurt my face.use with a foundation brush instead
  • best for those with oily skin
  • reflective shimmer
  • med coverage
  • no spf
    • Many love this product, but I don't due to those exfoliating bbs. (not repurchasing)

Revlon Photoready BB Cream

  • This product came out in late November/early December 2012.
  • 1 oz for $13.99
  • 3 shades, but I like how the display had the three shades distributed amongst their regular shades, insuring which one might look best on you. For example, I wear Natural Beige, and was matched up to the light medium shade.
  • According to the website it hydrates, smoothes, covers, blurs flaws, and protects.
  • SPF 30
  • dewy, satiny finish
  • light to medium coverage
  • no smell
  • best for dry and normal skin
  • This reminds me of a lighter version of the Garnier BB cream. It is still oily (moisturizing), so those with oily skin might want to avoid, but I would suggest trying it and using a matte powder to set (just make sure you can return).

Rimmel London BB Cream
  • This product came out in the US on January 2013.
  • $6 for 1 oz.
  • 3 shades: light, medium, medium-dark
  • Claims it does 9 things: primes, moisturizes, minimizes pores, conceals, covers, smooths, mattifies, brightens, and helps protect skin.
  • faint smell at first that instantly disappears
  • light to medium coverage
  • reminds me a little of Maybelline's Dreamfresh but longer lasting
  • SPF 25
  • best for oily skin, as it has a matte finish.

BB Cream (Sally's Beauty)

  • I found this for around $7 at Sally's Beauty
  • Great for oily skin
  • Comes in 3 shades
  • Matte finish
  • Light-almost medium coverage
  • I like using it as a primer.

Garnier BB Cream in Combo/Oily Skin

  • SPF 20
  • 2.0 oz
  • 3 shades: light/medium, medium/deep, deep
  • best for oily/combo skin
  • screw top cap
  • runny formula
  • +- $12 (I used a coupon for a few dollars off)
  • would repurchase, but I don't like how messy the formula is

Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream in Light to Medium

  • $12.99
  • The lightest coverage
  • lightest-feeling BB cream
  • SPF15
  • 2 colors
  • nice watermelon smell
  • wouldn't repurchase, as it is pretty much a tinted moisturizer (sent for review)
BB Cream Reviews

Pond's BB+

  • blurs imperfections

  • visibly fades dark spots--thanks to Vitamin E Acetate – an antioxidant known to protect and repair skin & Glycerin – helps increase hydration.
  • SPF15.
  • isn't greasy
  • matte to satin finish

10 Best Drugstore BB Creams 2021

It’s great to have choices in the makeup bag and in ours, we love having the option of using a fountain when the occasion calls for it or a decent BB cream for the lighter, carefree days when we “don’t want to look like we’re wearing makeup.”

Every major makeup manufacturer seems to make a line of BB creams these days, and if you’re not interested in spending 40 bucks a pop, then you’ll love the brands that we have on our list below.

These are some of the best drugstore BB cream options for those of you who want to affordably supply your makeup bag.

Can’t afford Clinique best coverage bb cream drugstore Estée Lauder?

Another reason to opt for a BB cream best coverage bb cream drugstore the fact that it does much more for your skin than a foundation does: it hydrates better, acts as a primer, contains anti-aging ingredients, helps prevent blemishes, brightens and soothes.

1. NYX Cosmetics BB Cream

nyx1

For those of you who want to hydrate and prime your skin while evening out your skin tone, NYX’s BB cream is a great product. Not the right one for all of you out there since it only has three color choices, but if they match, you’ll love this product!

Fair-skinned users seem to have the best luck with it and those who have tried many other creams find that this one is the answer to their BB cream woes. Great on sensitive skin, too!

2. MISSHA M Perfect Cover BB Cream

Left to Right: Bright Beige #13, Light Beige #21, Natural Beige #23

This provides you with 42 SPF (awesome coverage and sun protection at the beach, at the pool or any other body of water outdoors), it provides you with excellent coverage so you can hide blemishes and other imperfections (more coverage than some other BB creams out there) and it helps diminish wrinkles!

3. Maybelline New York Dream Pure BB Cream

which is the highest percentage that you can get without a prescription.

4. SKIN79 Super Plus Beblesh Balm Triple Functions

Left to Right: Green, Gold, Pink, Orange, Purple

This is a Korean brand that launched in 2006.
