You also get 2% back at restaurants, gas stations and drug stores, and 1%.

Amazon prime rewards vs store card -

Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Review

If you’re already spending enough on Amazon to make the Prime membership worthwhile, you’ll definitely see the benefit of this card. Big Whole Foods shoppers will like it, too. An annual Prime membership costs $119, so $2,380 of Amazon or Whole Foods spending in a year pays for the membership—and that’s before you count the free shipping and discount opportunities you get with Prime.

It’s a solid everyday credit card, too, given there’s no annual or foreign transaction fee, and it has good rewards on restaurant, gas, and drugstore purchases.

Pros
  • Great rewards in several categories

  • No annual fee or foreign transaction fees

  • Lots of ways to use rewards

Cons
  • No introductory purchase offer

  • Amazon Prime membership required to earn 5% cash back

Pros Explained

  • Great rewards in several categories: While the highest rewards rates apply to a narrow set of purchases at Amazon and Whole Foods, the next-highest tier covers frequent transaction areas: restaurants, gas, and drugstores.
  • No annual fee or foreign transaction fees: This is always nice to have on a rewards card. You avoid the 3% charge a lot of other cards charge when traveling and purchasing outside of the U.S.
  • Lots of ways to use rewards: You have several options for redeeming your rewards, and the rewards are worth the same amount, no matter how you use them.

Cons Explained

  • No introductory purchase offer: Some top rewards cards with no annual fee waive interest charges on purchases for a fixed amount of time. This one does not. If you’re looking to finance Amazon purchases, check out the Amazon Store Card.
  • Amazon Prime membership required to earn 5% cash back: To get the highest percentage back, you need to maintain annual Prime membership, which runs $59 to $119 depending on whether you qualify for student or EBT/Medicaid card discounts. If you don’t have the membership now, review the Amazon Prime member policies and discounts to make sure it makes financial sense to purchase.

Double check that the membership option you choose is a qualifying Prime membership. For instance, if you receive free Prime shipping as a guest of another Prime member’s account, you’re not eligible for the Prime version of the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature.

Bonus for New Cardholders

New cardholders get a $200 Amazon gift card added to their account upon approval. You could also receive your bonus as a statement credit—it depends on what you’re approved for. Among retail cards, $200 is decent bonus, especially since you don't have to spend anything to get it.

Earning Points & Rewards

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card from Chase offers three levels of cash-back earnings. You’ll earn a whopping 5 points per $1 spent (equivalent to 5% back) on anything purchased at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market, as long as you have an active membership. If you spend $100, that’s $5 back and no need to worry about rotating 5% categories that other cards offer.

For every $1 you spend at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores, you’ll earn 2 points, and everything else earns 1 point per $1 spent. You can also earn additional rewards of up to 10% back on select purchases in Amazon.com departments such as electronics, cellphones, and clothing.

If you close your Prime account in the future, you’ll earn 3% back on Amazon.com and Whole Foods purchases.

Note

There are several grey areas where you may or may not earn 5 points per $1 spent on Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market purchases—generally when you’re not buying something directly from Whole Foods or Amazon in the U.S., or when shopping through a third party such as Instacart.

Redeeming Rewards

A point is worth 1 cent— in other words, 100 points are worth $1. Here's a rundown of how you can use them:

  • Cash or statement credits:You can redeem points forcash via electronic transfer to eligible savings and checking accounts. You can also apply points as statement credits.
  • Amazon purchases:You can use points directly at Amazon.com. You can pay for part or all of a purchase with points. The remaining amount can be paid with Amazon.com gift cards or a credit card. Shop with Points works like any other payment method attached to your account, though there are a few purchases you won’t be able to make with points.
  • Gift cards: Purchase gift cards for retailers such as Starbucks and Walmart at chase.com/amazonrewards.
  • Travel: Book airline tickets, hotel rooms, rental cars, and cruises by calling the Chase Travel Center at 1-855-234-2538. Remaining balances can be paid for with your credit card.
  • Products or services: Chase occasionally allows you to pay with Amazon points for products from third-party merchants.

How to Get the Most Out of This Card

There is only one way to get the most of this card: Be a loyal Amazon and Whole Foods Market shopper, and keep an active Amazon Prime membership (as long as it makes sense for you). Pair this card with a different card that earns higher rewards rates on travel purchases or other categories not covered by this card if you really want the most out of your credit card rewards.

Tip

Redeeming your points for cash back, gift cards, or travel are the most valuable ways to use your Amazon rewards points. When you use points to pay for Amazon purchases instead of paying for the whole thing with your card, you’re reducing the amount of points you could earn.

Excellent Perks

Some credit card features stand out from the typical lineup of credit card benefits. The Balance’s editors identify a handful of these products as “excellent perks,” and this card has two of them:

  • Insurance for lost, damaged or delayed luggage: On a reservation made with your card, you can get up to $3,000 per passenger to cover lost or damaged luggage. Passengers must be your immediate family member. If your flight is delayed for six hours or longer, each passenger may be reimbursed for clothing and toiletries at a rate of $100 per day for up to three days.
  • Travel accident insurance: You may qualify for up to $500,000 in coverage following an accidental death or dismemberment on a bus, train, cruise, or flight booked with your card.

Other Features

  • Extended warranties
  • Insurance for stolen or damaged purchases
  • Travel and emergency hotline
  • Access to Visa Signature Luxury Hotel Collection discounts
  • Rental car collision insurance (secondary to your own policy)
  • Concierge for booking event tickets, restaurant reservations, hotels, and other services

Customer Experience

In J.D. Power’s 2020 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study, Chase was ranked fourth and scored one point below the average.

Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature cardholders can access their accounts on the Chase mobile app, which also features a free credit score and contact information for 24/7 customer service phone lines. (There’s no online chat, though.)

Security Features

Chase’s credit cards have industry-standard security features and a few exceptional ones: You can lock your card from the app if you misplace it, and if you need a new card, you can get a free replacement within 24 hours in the U.S. and Canada.

Fees

This Amazon card has industry-standard fees for the most part, though the balance transfer fee is a little high at 5% of the transferred balance. (Transferring a balance to a rewards card isn’t a great strategy, either.) It’s also worth noting that the card doesn’t charge a fee for transactions made outside the U.S.

What will Cyber Week look like this year?

This Black Friday might have been the biggest one yet: Ahead of Black Friday, the National Retail Federation (NRF) predicted there’ll be about 2 million more holiday shoppers taking advantage of doorbuster deals from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday this year compared to 2020. And shoppers are expected to shatter records with their holiday spending this year, too — the NRF reported sales during November and December will grow between 8.5 percent and 10.5 percent over last year.

As we’ve previously reported, the expected influx of shoppers paired with congested ports, staffing shortages and low inventory caused Black Friday sales to start exceedingly early this year across retailers. Jessica Young, director of research data at Digital Commerce 360, told us the biggest challenge for many retailers “is getting enough merchandise into their warehouses to accommodate all orders” due to raw material and shipping container shortages in addition to backed up ports.

With retailers finding it difficult to restock their shelves and meet high demand this year, retail experts told us shoppers shouldn't hold out for better deals to come around — not even on Cyber Monday — as shopping last minute for the holidays may not be an option this year.

“Even if shoppers think they're shopping ‘early enough’ to account for shipping, they might find that the item they want is out of stock until after the holidays — if there's a must-have on your list and it's on sale, buy it now,” said Kristin McGrath, editor at RetailMeNot. Research shows many shoppers have taken that advice: A report by McKinsey & Company found that 45 percent of shoppers said they started holiday shopping in early October.

But it’s not just shoppers that are adapting to the early shopping boom. Research from Digital Commerce 360 found that retailers like Target, Anthropologie and Uncommon Goods were sending holiday-themed emails by mid-September, according to Young. Retailers and brands are also pivoting to more personalized ads and social media messaging to maintain consumer loyalty, especially as shoppers are “more willing than ever to switch brands or retailers” when items aren’t available, said Greg Kelly, a senior partner at McKinsey & Company who leads their marketing and sales practice globally.

E-commerce continues to dominate Cyber Week shopping

Online shopping is expected to dominate this year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping as overall demand and holiday spending surges, and it’ll “continue to increase as consumers are worried about items running out,” said Kelly.

More people relying on e-commerce could bring holiday online spending to over $200 billion for the first time, according to Adobe Analytics’ Holiday Shopping Forecast report. And while you’ll find ongoing Black Friday sales and deals both in stores and online, several retailers were closed for in-person shopping on Thanksgiving for the second year in a row, including Best Buy, Macy’s, and Walmart (Target recently announced it’ll be closing its stores on Thanksgiving for good).

As we discussed in our Black Friday deep dive, the rise in demand for online retail sites has been trending upwards in recent years and exponentially increased as contactless e-commerce became the main way to shop during the Covid pandemic. In fact, Adobe reported that Black Friday was the second largest online spending day in U.S. history in 2020, right behind Cyber Monday 2020.

What to buy during ongoing Black Friday sales — and what to avoid

With all the promoted sales and savings events this holiday season, what worthwhile deals should shoppers look out for? McGrath told us that key sale categories are usually the same from one year to the next. That means shoppers can expect to see major discounts on tech like tablets, smartwatches and wireless headphones.

“AirPods and competing earbuds have been the stars of the Black Friday show the past two seasons,” said McGrath, adding that retailers like Walmart, Amazon and Target dropped wireless earbuds and headphones prices to record lows last year and will likely do so again. McGrath said these big name retailers will also host a variety of video games deals, including popular games for the Nintendo Switch — although highly sought-after games aren’t expected to plummet that low.

McGrath emphasized that Black Friday is one of the few times a year where discounts on Apple products are almost guaranteed — a great time to shop considering Apple isn’t known for hosting many deep discounts throughout the year. One of the best sales are on Apple Watches, according to McGrath: You won’t find many large price drops on the latest Apple Watch Series 7, but you’ll find several discounts (around $50 or more) on older models like the Series 3 and Series 6.

However, shoppers should keep in mind that while tech is typically discounted across the board throughout Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Covid pandemic-induced global chip shortage could result in popular tech gifts, including laptops, smartphones and gaming consoles (like the highly sought-after Playstation 5 and the Nintendo Switch), to be even harder to purchase.

Despite the large array of sales, some items can wait. Notably, holiday merchandise will be heavily discounted after the holidays and retailers usually offer better deals on large appliances and mattresses during Labor Day, Memorial Day and other holiday weekends, according to McGrath. She also previously told us that some doorbuster sales — like the ones we usually see for TVs — may be “cheapened for mass consumption” or equip “lower-quality components, fewer HDMI ports and other problems.”

How to make the most of ongoing Black Friday 2021 sales

When it comes to finding the best ongoing Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals to shop, there are several tools to make sure you’re getting the best price. Price trackers and browser extensions like Cently and Honey can automatically apply coupon codes to your cart at checkout, while PriceBlink lets you see the cheapest buying option across multiple retailers. Most of these tools — including Amazon Assistant and the Karma browser extension — can monitor prices and alert you when those drop for certain products.

Several retailers also provide price match guarantee policies, which allow you to notify a retailer of a lower price at another competitor and the retailer will then match that price. Big name retailers like Walmart,Best Buy and Target began offering price matches while rolling out their Black Friday sales in October — but there are exceptions. For example, Target and Best Buy will only price match for certain competitors, and Best Buy won’t price match competitors’ special Black Friday pricing starting Nov. 19 through Cyber Monday (Nov. 29).

McGrath recommended shoppers utilize cash back rewards on their early purchases so they “can put money back in their pockets to use later in the season or in the new year — and help ease some costs down the line.” You can use a combination of credit cards and rewards apps to ensure you're getting discounts, points and cash back on your Black Friday and Cyber Monday purchases. There are several credit cards available that’ll let you earn cash back and save on products from Apple, Amazon, Walmart and more.

There was plenty of buzz last week about the Amazon Credit Card earning 5% back at Whole Foods. One the surface this seems really good, but there is actually better ways to save to than the Amazon Card at Whole Foods.

Don’t Use the Amazon Card at Whole Foods

Sign Up Bonus:

The sign up bonus for the Amazon Credit Card is a magnificent $70 credit to Amazon. Now, I love Amazon, but I have a hard time pulling the trigger on this card for a $70 credit to Amazon.

The Annual Fee:

Let’s first end this idea that the Amazon Credit Card has no annual fee. Sure, you can have the card with no annual fee, but you’d only earn 3% back on Amazon and Whole Foods.

There is an indirect annual fee associated with this card and that is the $99 Amazon Prime Membership yearly fee.

The only way to earn 5% cash back is to cough up $99 a year.

That being said, if you are an Amazon Prime member, I assume you shop at Amazon quite frequently and use other services to make the $99 fee worth it.

Still, the fee should be considered since the extra 2% comes only if you pay the $99 fee.

Earning Rate:

If you are an Amazon Prime member you earn:

  • 5% back on Amazon and Whole Foods
  • 2% back Restaurants, Gas, and Drugstores
  • 1% back everywhere else

If you are not an Amazon Prime member you earn:

  • 3% Back on Amazon and Whole Foods
  • 2% back Restaurants, Gas, and Drugstores
  • 1% back everywhere else

While 5% sounds enticing to open this card, there are other cards/ways you can have 5% or more off on Amazon. We will discuss that below.

Redemption Options:

One thing to keep in mind, while this is a Chase card, you will earn Amazon points, not Ultimate Reward points.

You can redeem your Amazon points at 1 cent per point via:

  • Amazon.com
  • Statement Credit (starting at 2,000 points)
  • Gift Cards (starting at 2,500 points)
  • Travel

There isn’t anything special about the redemption options when it comes to the Amazon Credit Card.

Overall:

That was a quick review of the Amazon Credit Card. While you can earn 5% cash back with this credit card, I would give this card a pass. There are other ways to earn 5% back on Amazon or Whole Foods and you don’t need to be a Prime Member to do so.

Now Let’s Talk…

The other day, I read that the average Amazon Prime member spends $1,300 per year on Amazon vs $700 per year for a non-Prime member.

Personally, I think I do spend around that each year, if not slightly more. I really love Amazon, and when I can stack with Drop and the JetBlue Portal, it makes it even better.

Now, I don’t shop at Whole Foods, because I think the prices are a bit high for my liking. Even if I did, I would not be opening an Amazon credit card to save 5% as a Prime Member. Nor would I become a Prime Member to save an extra 2% (if I wasn’t already a Prime Member).

Other Credit Cards:

Since Whole Foods is a grocery store, if you have a card that has a grocery store bonus this will trigger it.

Here is a list of my top grocery cards.

Cards like the American Express Blue Cash Preferred, which earns 6% and the Everyday Preferred which earns 4.5 points per dollar, earn at a higher rate than the Chase Amazon Credit Card.

If you are in your first year of the Discover It, earning 10% back at Grocery Stores in Quarter 2, is going to be the best option.

For the Ultimate Reward lover in your life, the Chase Freedom is currently earning 5 points per dollar on all mobile payments. Quarter 2 hasn’t been released yet, but since they like to follow along with Discover, if could be Grocery Stores as well.

I would give these 2 cards the nod over the Amazon Credit Card as well. Discover has no redemption minimum and you can redeem directly on Amazon if you wanted with no restrictions.

The Chase Freedom, well it earns 5% back (or 5 points per dollar). If you use these for travel, you can receive a better value than your Amazon Credit Card.

Math Time:

Taking a look at the different credit card options, we have a few options.

I found this article interesting about grocery store spending by age, gender, and salary.

For this example, we will say the average grocery store purchases is $300 per month ($3,600 per year)

The Amazon Credit Card will earn:

  • ($3,600*.05)- $99 = $81 per year in rewards

The Blue Cash Preferred will earn:

  • ($3,600*.06) – $95 = $121 per year in rewards

The Everyday Preferred:

  • $3,600 *4.5 = 16,200 Membership Reward Points.
  • You value of these points will help you decide if this is a better option than the Blue Cash Preferred
  • Also keep in mind this card has a $95 fee

Interestingly enough, if you shop at Whole Foods and have the Amazon Credit card, but you are not a Prime Member, you actually out earn the person who is a Prime Member:

This was just an example, you always want to run the numbers for your situation.

Discounted Gift Cards:

This option usually isn’t mentioned, but definitely should be. Depending on your goals, this could be a better option than using a credit card.

Currently, looking at discounted gift cards, you can receive up to 7.3% off your Whole Foods gift card purchase.

At the moment CardPool is out of stock, but you can earn 2% cash back through shopping portals.

For ease of math, we will say you pay using your 2% cash back credit card, you will save up to 9.3% on your Whole Food gift card purchase.

Even by those numbers, this could very well be a better option than earning points.

Amex Offers:

I love Amex Offers, they are just a really awesome way to save money.

In the past American Express has had offers to save money at Whole Foods. Also there have been offers to stores that sell 3rd party gift cards (to places like Whole Foods) to save you more than the ways mentioned above.

Conclusion:

While at first glance it seems great that the Amazon Credit Card offers 5% back when you shop at Whole Foods, there are much better options to save more money/earn more rewards.

If you have this card and none of the others, well then this will be your best bet. If you have any others not this list, those are going to be a better option for you.

Are Amazon Credit Cards Worth It?

Find the Best Credit Cards for Online Shopping

Learn More

Amazon has a gargantuan hold on many Americans’ shopping habits, and it’s been estimated that nearly 5% of all U.S. retail goods sold are through the online behemoth.

If you regularly shop via Amazon.com, at Whole Foods or purchase AWS cloud services, you may have been wondering if using an Amazon-branded credit card was a smart move, since you can earn elevated rewards on your Amazon-centric spending as well as several other areas of spending.

There are four Amazon credit cards to consider: two consumer cards and two small business cards. Each card comes with its own set of benefits and potential drawbacks. Is one of them right for you? Let’s take a closer look at each card to help you decide.

Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card*

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card* is one of two Amazon consumer cards, available only to those with an Amazon Prime membership.

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $0 with Prime membership. A Prime membership fee starts at $119 annually or $59 annually for a Prime Student membership.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Rewards: 5% cash back in rewards at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market with an eligible Prime membership, 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations and drugstores and 1% on all other purchases
  • Payment options: This card does not offer traditional 0% introductory APR periods, however, cardholders may be eligible to choose a 0% APR period where they make equal monthly payments ranging from 6 to 18 months on qualifying purchases of $50 or more.
  • Other benefits: As a Visa Signature card, you’ll get perks including roadside dispatch, auto rental collision damage waiver, purchase protection, extended warranty protection.

Pros and Cons

There’s no other card that will earn you higher everyday rewards on your Amazon spending, so if you’re already an Amazon Prime member and spend a fair amount of money on the site, this card deserves a place in your wallet. But if you rarely shop using Amazon, it may not make sense to pay the annual fee for Prime membership.

To break even with the annual Prime membership cost of $119, you’d have to spend $2,380 annually (just under $200 monthly) on a combination of Amazon spending and/or at Whole Foods Market. Of course this doesn’t take into account some of the other benefits of Prime membership, like free next day and two-day delivery, Prime Video, Amazon Music, Amazon Photos and more. Those additional perks may hold value for you.

Alternate Pick: Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card*

If you’re primarily looking for rewards on everyday spending, consider the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card*. For an annual fee of $95 the card offers the following rewards: 3 points per dollar at US supermarkets, on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1 point per dollar), 2 points per dollar on US gas stations and 1 point per dollar on other eligible purchases The welcome bonus will help you score some extra cash back on Amazon.com, too: 15,000 Membership Rewards points after making $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months of account opening

Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card*

The Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card*is the alternative option for those who want elevated rewards on their Amazon spending without paying for a Prime membership.

Card Details

  • No annual fee (and no Prime membership required to apply).
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Rewards: 3% cash back in rewards at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market, 2% cash back at restaurants, gas stations, and drugstores and 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • Payment options: This card does not offer a traditional introductory APR. Instead, cardholders can opt to forego earning rewards on eligible Amazon purchases for a 0% APR period when they make equal monthly payments ranging from six to 18 months on qualifying purchases of $50 or more.
  • Other benefits: As a Visa Signature card, you’ll get perks including roadside dispatch, auto rental collision damage waiver, purchase protection, extended warranty protection.

Pros and Cons

There’s no Amazon Prime membership required but the earnings rate on Amazon stuff is lower with this card. Otherwise this card has all the same bells and whistles as its Prime sibling. The question to ask yourself if debating whether or not to get this card is how much you’ll actually spend on Amazon purchases and/or Whole Foods spending vs the areas that only earn 1% on this card. If you think you’ll spend more overall in the 1% categories, a better choice would be a card that earns a flat 2% cash back on every purchase.

Alternate Pick: Citi® Double Cash Card

There are a number of credit cards on the market that will earn 2% rewards on everything you buy without the need to track categories. One pick to consider is the no-annual-fee Citi® Double Cash Card which earns 1% when you make a purchase and another 1% when you pay your bill. Rewards earned on the card can be used as a statement credit, direct deposit, check or converted to transferable points when paired with a premium card.

Amazon Business Prime American Express Card*

The Amazon Business Prime American Express Card* is the small business credit card for Business Prime members.

Card Details

  • No annual fee, but an Amazon Business Prime Membership is required to apply for the card. A Business Prime membership starts at $69 annual for one user and goes all the way up to $10,999 a year for over 100 users.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Rewards: 5% in rewards or 90 Days Terms on eligible U.S. purchases at Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market with an eligible Prime membership. The 5% reward rate applies to the first $120,000 in purchases each calendar year. Earn 2% at U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, and on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers and 1% on other purchases
  • Payment options: Instead of earning 5% rewards, cardholders can choose 90-day terms on U.S. purchases at Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market to repay a balance without incurring interest.
  • Other benefits: As an American Express card, the card comes with baggage insurance, car rental loss and damage insurance, extended warranty, purchase and return protections.

Pros and Cons

The card earns 5% cash back on Amazon purchases—which includes the Amazon Web Service (AWS) cloud platform, on up to the first $120,000 in spending per calendar year, then 1%.  If your business spends significantly at Amazon but under the $120,000 cap, this could snag you some solid savings. However, those with high expenses beyond the Amazon ecosystem or who want more flexibility in a business rewards card are likely to find that a business card with a different structure will yield greater rewards.

Where this card shines is in the potential to carry a balance for 90 days in lieu of earning rewards on your purchase. For those who need the extra time, this option can be far more valuable than earning single digit rewards when the APR is a variable 14.24% - 22.24% Variable APR on purchases.

Alternate Pick: The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express

If your annual spending is far below $120,000 but you still want strong rewards on your business expenses, look at a card like the The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express (Terms apply). This card offers the following rewards: 2 Membership Rewards points per dollar on everyday business purchases such as office supplies or client dinners. 2 points per dollar applies to the first $50,000 in purchases per year. All other eligible purchases earn 1 point per dollar That’s simpler to keep track of and there’s no annual fee or associated membership requirement to apply. (See rates & fees).

Amazon Business American Express Card*

The Amazon Business American Express Card* is the small business credit card that offers elevated rewards on Amazon spending, but without the Prime membership requirement.

Card Details

  • No annual fee.
  • No foreign transaction fees.
  • Rewards: 3% in rewards or 60 Day Terms on U.S. purchases at Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market. The 3% rate applies to the first $120,000 in purchases each calendar year. Earn 2% Back at U.S. restaurants, U.S. gas stations, and on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers and 1% on other eligible purchases
  • Payment options: Instead of earning 3% rewards, cardholders can choose 60-day terms on U.S. purchases at Amazon Business, AWS, Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market to repay a balance without incurring interest.
  • Other benefits: As an American Express card, the card comes with baggage insurance, car rental loss and damage insurance, extended warranty, purchase and return protections.

Pros and Cons

Earning 3% back on your Amazon spending is OK but the real value in this card lies in the 60-day financing option. Unlike a card with a promotional 0% APR offer, you can choose 60-day terms every time you make an Amazon purchase. That extra time may be more meaningful to you than the 3% rewards rate. But if you don’t spend much on Amazon, another card can offer greater rewards in the areas where you spend the most.

Alternate Pick: Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card

The Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card may be a solid alternative to the Amazon Business American Express Card*,  offering a strong rewards rate on areas many businesses are likely to find appealing. 3 points per dollar on the first $150,000 spent on travel and select business categories each account anniversary year. Earn 1 point per dollar on all other purchases. It also comes with an annual fee of $95 but that may be balanced out by the flexibility of your earnings.

Rewards earned are Chase Ultimate Rewards points which can be redeemed for cash back at 1 cent per point or redeemed for 25% more value when used to book travel through the Chase Travel Center. You can also use your rewards to redeem for Amazon purchases, but that yields a lesser value of around 0.8 cents per point.

Bottom Line

If you’re a heavy duty Amazon and/or Whole Foods spender, an Amazon rewards credit card could be a smart move to save money. You’ll generally find the most value comes from the Prime version of the consumer card as Prime membership comes with a slew of perks that if utilized can far outweigh the cost of membership. Of course if you rarely shop with Amazon, it doesn’t make sense to get either consumer version of the card as you can find cards offering 2% on everything you buy, not just a handful of categories.

Whether not to get a business Amazon card will depend on your goals. If most of your spending needs can be met via Amazon, either of the business Amazon cards could be a fit depending on how much you spend, if you can benefit from a Prime membership and/or if you can frequently benefit from the extended financing offers on purchases.

Amazon Prime’s latest perk is a new Rewards Visa Card with 5% back

Amazon announced this morning it’s teaming up with Chase to introduce a new Visa credit card exclusively for its most loyal customers, Prime members. The card offers Prime members 5 percent back on Amazon purchases, as well as other rewards, including 2 percent back at restaurants, gas stations and drugstores, and 1 percent back everywhere else.

This is not Amazon’s first entry into the credit card space, as any Amazon shopper can tell you. Ads appear across Amazon’s site today, encouraging you to save money on purchases by applying for Amazon’s Rewards card. However, it is one that targets Prime members in particular, with a focus on encouraging increased spending on the site.

The addition follows other cards which only work on Amazon.com or with those retailers that use Pay with Amazon, as well as the original cash-back-focused Amazon.com Rewards Visa, which offers 3 percent back on purchases.

The new card sweetens the deal for Prime members with a 5 percent cash-back option instead. Amazon says that it will upgrade current Rewards Visa Signature card members with eligible Prime memberships to the new card, but they’ll be able to take advantage of the benefits immediately — even before the card arrives.

Other benefits include no annual fee, no foreign transaction fees when traveling or when cross-border shopping, travel protection, 24/7 concierge service and zero fraud liability, and the card itself features a new metal design. There’s no cap on rewards earned and those rewards never expire, Amazon says.

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card (whew!) is issued by J.P. Morgan Chase, sports the Visa logo, and reads “Amazon Prime” at the top right.

The move represents yet another effort by the online retailer to encourage consumers to join its $99 yearly membership program, Amazon Prime, whose benefits now extend far beyond just free, two-day shipping.

Today, Prime members can take advantage of a host of services from Amazon, including Amazon’s Netflix-like service Prime Video, music streaming via Prime Music, free e-books and magazines through Prime Reading, Audible Channels, unlimited photo backup and storage via Prime Photos, Twitch Prime, early access to deals and more.

Amazon continually adds new perks to Prime in order to boost Prime membership, which was recently estimated to range anywhere from 58 to 69 million members. That means roughly half of U.S. households are using Prime. The program is key to Amazon’s bottom line, given that Prime members may spend more than double what non-members do, according to some analysts.

The new Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is available starting today on Amazon.

Update: Corrected wording, as this is not the only card that targets Prime members. However, cards like the Amazon.com Store card are designed to be used for Amazon.com purchases, not those that take place offline.

Источник: https://techcrunch.com/2017/01/11/amazon-primes-latest-perk-is-a-new-rewards-visa-card-with-5-back/

Rewards Cards Vs. Store Credit Cards: Which Is Best?

Today, nearly every major chain store has a rewards card, a store credit card or both. Rewards cards give you rewards for what you spend without financing your purchase. For example, Big Lots gives you 20% off coupons occasionally with its rewards program. Store credit cards can help you earn points or earn cashback for future discounts. However, your purchases go on the card and are financed. Since there are many types of cards, research is important.

Store Rewards Cards

Store rewards cards are tied to company loyalty programs. Merchant rewards programs give you points, cashback, credit on your receipt or another form of reward when you shop or make certain types of purchases.

For example, Starbucks gives you star points when you buy food, drinks or merchandise there. You can redeem those points for free items when you reach certain thresholds. However, AutoZone gives customers the ability to earn a $20 gift card if they spend $20 five times within 12 months. There are plenty of options. These are a few of the top store rewards cards:

  • Kohl’s offers a $5 cash coupon for every $100 spent.
  • Ulta gives single, double or triple points for each $1 spent for certain items, and 100 points earn a $3 credit.
  • Best Buy’s reward program offers points per dollar spent, and the points program is divided into three tiers of annual spending amounts.

The top benefit of choosing a rewards program is that it is completely free to apply for or sign up for a card. Also, you get access to exclusive rewards or discounts. Since store rewards card programs do not check your credit, there is no risk of your sensitive information being compromised if there is a data breach. This also means that there is no impact to your credit for applying.

The main disadvantage is that you must supply your email or mailing address, and these companies usually send frequent emails and monthly newsletters or advertisements. However, they may also send useful coupons.

Store Credit Cards

Store credit cards are similar to traditional credit cards. The main difference is that you can only use some store credit cards at the stores that supplied them or at sister stores. These are called closed-loop cards.

For example, you can use Victoria’s Secret credit card at Bath & Body Works or PINK stores. Not all stores have the same rules. Although Amazon bought Whole Foods, you cannot use your Amazon store credit card there.

However, since the Amazon Prime Visa is an open-loop card, you can use it anywhere. Store credit cards come with interest, and you must make monthly minimum payments if you carry a balance. These are a few examples of some top-rated store credit cards:

  • The Target Red Card provides 5% off most Target purchases, free shipping on most Target purchases online and an annual 10% off coupon as a reward.
  • The Walmart store credit card offers 5% cashback for Walmart online purchases and 2% back for in-store purchases.
  • The JC Penney credit card comes with an exclusive savings day with extra perks, double or single points on store purchases and special financing on big-ticket purchases.
  • The Amazon store card offers 5% cashback for Prime members, special financing options and equal monthly payments for some items.

The main advantage of store credit cards is earning cash rewards. Also, some cards do not come with annual fees. If you can keep a low balance and pay off purchases quickly, you can use the discounts or points to your advantage if you already shop at those stores often.

With store credit cards, the biggest risks are financial mistakes. If you do not make your monthly payments on time, it can negatively impact your credit score. Most cards come with interest rates that exceed 20%. If you cannot pay down a large balance quickly, you may pay a lot of interest. You are subject to a credit check with any type of store credit card.

Which Card Is Best?

Credit cards may not be right for you if you are already struggling with debt. However, free rewards programs may help you save on your regular purchases. In general, they are a better choice for financial safety. If your finances and spending abilities allow the responsible use of a credit card, there are even more ways to get discounts, earn cashback and enjoy other benefits.

You may find several rewards cards that can help you save money. If you determine that you can also afford to use a credit card, look carefully at fees, interest rates, and limitations. If you want a credit card, pick one for a store that you already shop at frequently. This will ensure you’re not too tempted to spend money you wouldn’t otherwise spend, just to build up points or rewards.
