How to Convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit
We have created a listing of the formulas needed to convert temperature to and from both Celsius ( commonly misspelled celcius ) and Fahrenheit ( commonly misspelled Farenheit ). We have also created a converter for your use. The formulas can teach the process and the converter will make your life easier. Enjoy!
This converter requires the use of Javascript enabled and capable browsers. In the formulas below, / represents division, * represents multiplication, - subtraction, + addition and = is equal.
Tc = (5/9)*(Tf-32); Tc = temperature in degrees Celsius, Tf = temperature in degrees Fahrenheit
For example, suppose you have a Fahrenheit temperature of 98.6 degrees and you wanted to convert it into degrees on the Celsius scale. Using the above formula, you would first subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit temperature and get 66.6 as a result. Then you multiply 66.6 by five-ninths and get the converted value of 37 degrees Celsius.
Below is the formula to convert a Celsius scale temperature into degrees on the Fahrenheit scale.
Tf = (9/5)*Tc+32; Tc = temperature in degrees Celsius, Tf = temperature in degrees Fahrenheit
Assume that you have a Celsius scale temperature of 100 degrees and you wish to convert it into degrees on the Fahrenheit scale. Using the stated formula, you first multiply the Celsius scale temperature reading by nine-fifths and get a result of 180. Then add 32 to 180 and get the final converted result of 212 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale.
Below is another accepted conversion method that works just as well and perhaps might be easier to remember. No matter which direction you want to covert, Fahrenheit to Celsius or Celsius to Fahrenheit, always first add 40 to the number. Next, multiply by 5/9 or 9/5 just like the first method. Then, always subtract out the 40 you just added to yield the final result. To remember whether to use 5/9 or 9/5 when converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius or Celsius to Fahrenheit, just simply remember, F (for Fahrenheit) begins with the same letter as Fraction. 5/9 is always a Fraction; while 9/5 is also a fraction, in this form, it is convert c to f calculator a whole number plus a fraction (1 and 4/5). To convert from C to F, try these calculations manually.
37 + 40 = 77, and 77 * 9/5 = 138.6. For the final calculation, remove the 40. 138.6 - 40 = 98.6
In summary, add 40, (F to C) multiply by Fraction.(C to F) multiply by the other, subtract 40.

We answer these questions below, giving you the mathematical formulas for converting between these two temperature units, a handy conversion chart, and a quick conversion trick you can use without having to grab a calculator.
Celsius vs Fahrenheit: Key Differences
Before we explain how to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit (and Fahrenheit to Celsius), let’s review the main differences between the two temperature scales.
Celsius (written as °C and also called Centigrade) is the most common temperature scale in the world, used by all but five countries. It’s part of the International System of Units (SI), or what you might know as the metric system, which is typically used in science classes (think centimeters, meters, kilograms, milliliters, etc.) and in science as a whole.
By contrast, Fahrenheit (written as °F) is only used officially by five countries in the world:
- United States
- Belize
- Cayman Islands
- Palau
- Bahamas
Fahrenheit is not part of the metric system; rather, it’s part of the Imperial system, which includes forms of measurements such as inches, feet, pounds, gallons, etc. Moreover, unlike Celsius, it is not typically used in science.
Celsius to Fahrenheit Formula
Unfortunately, converting from Celsius to Fahrenheit isn’t easy to do quickly or in your head. Here are the formulas used to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit and Fahrenheit to Celsius. These formulas will give you the exact conversion from one unit of temperature to the other:
Celsius to Fahrenheit Formula: (°C * 1.8) + 32 = °F
Fahrenheit to Celsius Formula: (°F - 32) / 1.8 = °C
For example, say the temperature outside is 18 °C and you want to know what this would equal in Fahrenheit. Here’s how your equation would look once you plug in 18 for °C:
(18 * 1.8) + 32
(32.4) + 32
=64.4 °F
Here’s another example if you want to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius: say you’re feeling ill and your body temperature is 101.3 °F. To find out what this equals in Celsius, simply plug 101.3 into the °F part in the second equation written above:
(101.3 - 32) / 1.8
(69.3) / 1.8
=38.5 °C
As you can see, these conversions aren’t particularly hard to carry out, but they do take some time and aren’t the easiest to do without a calculator on hand.
Luckily, there’s a shortcut. By memorizing some of the most common temperatures that come up in daily life, you should have no problem being able to convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit and vice versa. We’ll take a look at how to do this next.

As you can see from this chart, Fahrenheit temperatures are typically a lot higher than their equivalent Celsius temperatures are.
Also, notice how the difference between Celsius and Fahrenheit starts to get smaller the lower you go in temperature—until, that is, they're the exact same! As the chart indicates, -40 °C is the same convert c to f calculator as -40 °F.This point is called parity, meaning the two scales use the same value to represent the same temperature. Unfortunately (or fortunately, since this is pretty cold!), you likely won’t come across this temperature in your daily life.
Note that parity only happens at -40°. The lower you go after parity (i.e., the further you go into the negatives), the bigger the difference starts to become again between Celsius and Fahrenheit.
How to Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit: Quick Trick
If you find yourself needing to quickly convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, here is a simple trick you can use: multiply the temperature in degrees Celsius by 2, and then add 30 to get the (estimated) temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. This rule of thumb is really useful and also pretty accurate for most weather-related temperatures.
For example, if the temperature outside is 15 °C, this would come out to around 60 °F:
(15 * 2) + 30
(30) + 30
=60 °F (In reality, 15 °C is equivalent to 59 °F—that’s pretty close!)
Of course, expect the actual temperature to be a few degrees off, but for the most part, this is a reliable and easy way to convert temperatures in your head fast.
If you want to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, do the opposite: subtract 30 from the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, and then divide by 2 to get the temperature in degrees Celsius.
For example, if the temperature outside is 84 °F, this would be roughly equal to 27 °C:
(84 - 30) / 2
54 / 2
= 27 °C (In reality, 84 °F is equivalent to 28.89 °C—again, that’s a pretty close estimate!).

Globally, the standard scale for everyday use is Celsius. Only the United States, islands freely associated with the US (Palau, the Marshall Islands and Micronesia), the Bahamas, the Caymans, and Liberia use Fahrenheit as their primary temperature measurement. Everybody else goes with Celsius.
History of the Fahrenheit Scale
The Fahrenheit scale was created by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in 1724. Fahrenheit invented his scale for use with mercury thermometers, which he also invented. The Fahrenheit scale is a bit older than the Celsius scale.

The Celsius scale was created by Anders Celsius in 1745, a couple decades after Fahrenheit. Curiously, Celsius created the reverse of the modern scale, treating 0 as the boiling point of water and 100 as the freezing point of water. Other scientists, notably Carl Linnaeus, flipped it later that year, making 0 the freezing point and 100 the boiling point of water.
Since it was originally built as a scale between 0 and 100, Celsius is also called centigrade. The word "centigrade" literally describes something that consists of or is divided into 100 degrees. That said, Celsius has been the preferred nomenclature since 1948.
The Kelvin Temperature Unit
You may have heard of temperature being measured according to kelvin. Indeed, if you're involved in the sciences, you probably use kelvin. Kelvin is a bit different than Fahrenheit and Celsius. Celsius and Fahrenheit are both temperature scales, measuring temperatures in degrees.
History of the Kelvin Unit
Named after Lord Kelvin, a kelvin is a standard scientific unit, like a kilogram for weight or a meter for distance. The proper way to use the word, then, is not "100 degrees Kelvin" but "100 kelvin." (Note the lower case "k" in kelvin.)
1 kelvin equals 1/273.16th of the triple point of water: that is, the point at which liquid water, water vapor and solid ice can coexist. In other words, 273.16 kelvin is the exact triple point of water.

The importance of kelvin is that it measures absolute temperature: absolute zero is 0 kelvin, the temperature at which all atomic motion (which creates heat) stops. There is no thermal energy whatsoever at absolute zero.
Kelvin Conversion Formulas
Kelvin is primarily of value to scientists, since it simplifies calculation at extreme temperatures. For your convenience, the conversion equations follow.
- To convert: Celsius to kelvin: C + 273.15 = K.
To convert Fahrenheit to kelvin: [(F - 32) / 1.8] + 273.15 = K

Definition: The Celsius (symbol: °C) is an SI (International System of Units) derived unit of temperature. It is defined based on the SI unit of temperature, the kelvin. The Celsius and Kelvin scales are precisely related, with a one-degree change in Celsius being equal to a one degree-change in kelvin. The kelvin (and thus Celsius) is defined based on the Boltzmann constant, k, which equals 1.380649 × 10^{-23} when expressed in the unit J·K^{-1}, a unit equivalent to kg·m^{2}·s^{-2}·K^{-1}. The kilogram, meter, and second, are defined based on Planck's constant, h, the speed of light, c, and cesium frequency, ΔνCs.
History/origin: From 1743 until 1954, the Celsius scale was based on 0°C for the freezing point of water and 100 °C for the boiling point of water, both at a pressure of one standard atmosphere, using mercury as the working material. This was not always the case, and originally 0°C was defined as the boiling point of water and 100°C was defined as the melting point of snow. Celsius as a unit and a scale was not widely used until this original definition was inverted. In 1954, the unit, "degree Celsius," as well as the Celsius scale were again re-defined to instead be based on absolute zero (-273.15 °C) and the triple point of VSMOW (specially purified water). This is the definition that was used up until 2019, when the kelvin was redefined based on the definitions of the second, meter, and kilogram.
Current use: The Celsius scale replaced the Fahrenheit scale in most countries in the mid to late 20^{th} century. Almost all countries around the world use this scale, except for those in which the metric system has not been adopted, such as the United States. Even in countries like the United States however, Celsius is widely used within the scientific community—it just is not widely used in everyday temperature references.
Fahrenheit
Definition: The Fahrenheit (symbol: °F) is a unit of temperature that was widely used prior to metrication. It is currently defined by two fixed points: the temperature at which water freezes, 32°F, and the boiling point of water, 212°F, both at sea level and standard atmospheric pressure. The interval between the freezing and boiling point is divided into 180 equal parts.
History/Origin: The Fahrenheit scale was developed based on a measurement proposed in 1724 by the German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit. He initially based the scale on an equal ice-salt mixture, selecting the values of 30°F for the freezing point of water, and 90°F for normal body temperature. He later adjusted the scale such that the melting point of ice was 32°F and body temperature was 96°F. He chose these values to simplify the degree markings he could make on his instruments, since this difference between the temperatures allowed him to mark degree lines by bisecting the interval six times. Later, when using the freezing and boiling points of water as fixed reference points for thermometers became popular, the scale was slightly re-defined such that there would be 180 degrees separating freezing and boiling point, resulting in normal human body temperature being approximately 98°F, rather than Fahrenheit's 96°F.
Current use: Until the 1960's the Fahrenheit scale was the primary scale used in English-speaking countries. Today, most countries around the world use the Celsius temperature scale instead, many having made the change during their metrication processes (conversion to using the metric system of units). However, the Fahrenheit scale is still used as the official temperature scale in a number of countries, including the United States (as well as its unincorporated territories), the Bahamas, Belize, the Cayman Islands, and a few others.
