What Happens if Your Bank Rejected Tax Refund?

Direct deposit is the fastest way to get your tax refund but it can turn into a headache if the IRS has the wrong information on file.

MyBankTracker breaks down what to do if your refund has gotten lost in the shuffle because of a direct deposit error.

April 15th is right around the corner and if your tax refund is late in arriving, the problem could lie with your bank account.

Entering the wrong routing or account number could significantly delay your refund or prevent it from reaching you at all.

What happens to your refund when you make a mistake with your bank account information really depends on the kind of error involved, and there are a few different ways it can play out.

Quick answer: Contact the IRS immediately and/or the bank that received your tax refund. If everything gets sorted out smoothly, you should expect a paper check in the mail instead of a direct deposit of your tax refund.

Consequences of entering the wrong direct deposit information

Once you submit your return with a refund due, the IRS will perform a validation check on the bank information you provide.

This just verifies that the numbers are complete, not whether they're accurate.

If you leave a number off, either on your account or routing number, you'd fail the validation check. In that scenario, the IRS would send you a paper check instead, which can take anywhere from six to eight weeks to be delivered.

If you enter the right amount of numbers but the digits themselves are incorrect, getting your refund back may be a little trickier.

Because you'd still be able to pass the validation check, the IRS would give the green light to release your refund to the bank. At this point, it would be up to the bank to decide what to do with the money.

The bank has the option of rejecting the deposit or accepting it. If it's rejected because the account information doesn't match the name on the check, it'll bounce back to the IRS.

Once the payment is returned, a paper check will be issued in its place. If the deposit is accepted, your refund will be deposited into whatever account is listed on your return.

Tip:  If a paper check is issued, it'll be sent to the last address the IRS has on file. If you've moved since filing your taxes, you'll need to fill out a change of address with the Post Office to make sure it's forwarded properly.

Check your refund status

The IRS Where's My Refund? tool updates the status of your return every 24 hours and it allows you to track your refund prior to once your return is received.

If your return hasn't posted to the processing system yet, you can ask the IRS to stop your direct deposit by calling 1-800-829-1040.

Keep in mind that you won't be able to change the information you've already entered so you'll have to get a paper check.

When a lawsuit seems likely, you'll need to have detailed documentation of all your communications with the IRS and the bank concerning the error.

This includes copies of your return showing the direct deposit information, a copy of Form 3911 and anything you receive from the bank regarding the deposit.

The more evidence you have to show that the money was deposited in error, the better the odds of being able to win your case.

PLAINFIELD, IL — A Chase Bank ATM was stolen from a bank on Route 59 early Tuesday morning and later recovered in a stolen pickup truck, officials said.

Plainfield police responded to the Chase Bank at 13661 South Route 59 around 4:23 a.m., after an alarm went off at the ATM. While on their way, the bank's security company told police dispatch that a white Ford F-350 dragged the ATM from the bank, Commander Anthony Novak told Patch.

Police found the pickup, previously reported stolen, and the ATM near the bank, but the thieves fled the scene before officers arrived, according to Novak.

Why your tax refund might be smaller next year

EVER since the coronavirus pandemic began, the world has been full of surprises – and you might get another one if you were expecting a tax refund. 

When Americans file their taxes each year – they are hoping for a bit of stimulus that they can use to address short-term or long-term needs. 

The average refund in 2021 $2,775 - but some could see lower returns next year

In 2021, Americans have received on average $2,775 in tax refunds, an 11% increase from the previous year, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

It’s important to note that tax refunds are issued when you overpay, so this is technically you getting your money back.

But this isn’t always the case for some Americans who may owe money because they underpaid in taxes.

In particular, there might be some reasons why you may either owe or might not get as big of a refund when you file in 2022 due to policy and other moves made by Washington this year.

We explain those possibilities below.

You didn’t opt out of child tax credits

The American Rescue Act, signed into law by President Joe Biden in March, included a provision to expand child tax credits to up to $3,600 per child from $2,000.

Since July, the payments have come out in monthly installments worth up to $300 per child, which are essentially advances.

While the payments have helped lift millions of children out of poverty – some may have to repay the IRS if they had a filing change or a boost in earnings.

To qualify for the full payments, couples need to make less than $150,000 and money network bank of america register parents who file as heads of households need to make under $112,500.

If income exceeds those thresholds – then you could wind up repaying the IRS if you failed to opt out of payments.

In total, the IRS will issue up to $1,800 worth of child tax credit payments to eligible families in 2021.

No student loan deductions

For a while now, those saddled with student debt haven’t had to make a payment thanks to a pause in loans that remains in place.

However, this means that borrowers won’t be allowed to take a deduction on student loans because nothing was paid in interest in 2021.   

Student borrowers are typically able to deduct a maximum of $2,500 of interest paid on federal taxes, according to the IRS.

And if you make too much money that deduction gets phased out or no longer applies.

For single filers, that deduction starts to phase out once your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) hits $70,000 and you can no longer claim once the amount reaches $85,000.

The phase-out commences at a $140,000 MAGI for married couples and ends completely when it tops $170,000.

Another thing you’ll want to keep in mind is that student loan collection is set to resume in February.

This could impact you if you’re in default – meaning the government might withhold your tax refund and use it to help repay your student loan obligations.

Wells Fargo, Chase not processing stimulus payments until Wednesday, sparking criticism

Banking giants Wells Fargo and Chase said they will not process recently issued $1,400 stimulus payments until Wednesday, causing outcry from their customers.

HuffPost noted that the banks said in individual statements last week that they will not be processing and releasing the payments until March 17.

“We expect most of the electronic payments to be available as soon as Wednesday, March 17, 2021,” Chase said on its website.

“Wells Fargo will process all of the direct deposits according to the effective date provided by the U.S. Treasury,” Wells Fargo said.

The announcements sparked criticism on Twitter. 

So Wells Fargo will be holding gov stimulus checks for 2 days before allowing people to access the funds. This let's Wells make interest off of ppl's cash.

HuffPost added that other banking institutions such as Chime made the payments immediately available to their customers. Chime claims to have already provided around $600 million worth of stimulus payments.

“We’ve already made ~$600M available to 250k members. These payments will be available at traditional banks on 3/17 but Chime members already have access and more is on the way,” Chime wrote on Twitter.

Stimulus payments were first sent out this weekend, shortly after the $1.9 trillion stimulus bill was passed along party lines.

“We know the importance of the stimulus funds to our customers, and we are providing the payments to our customers as soon as possible on the date the funds are available, based on IRS direction," Wells Fargo said in a statement provided to The Hill. "Wells Fargo is not holding the funds. March 17 is the official payment date provided by the IRS when the funds are available, and customers who are eligible to receive a direct deposit of their stimulus payment may expect it as soon as the morning of March 17."

When the first two stimulus payments were sent out, many people reported having issues obtaining them. Those who used tax-preparation services such as H&R Block and TurboTax reported struggling to get their payments, as the checks were sent to other bank accounts.

Individuals can again check the status of their stimulus checks through the IRS's "Get My Payment" tool.
