Last fall, in time for the 2020 holiday season, Chase introduced My Chase Plan, a flexible way for credit card holders to pay off select purchases over time with a fixed monthly fee instead of interest. With the 2021 holiday season approaching, here's a look at the what the bank calls a digital "buy now, pay later" feature, with some advice on how and when to consider using it.

How My Chase Plan Works

  • Twelve payments of $60.59 with a $3.10 monthly fee.

Once you choose an option, you'll continue to make your monthly credit card payment, and the My Chase Plan payment will be added to your minimum amount due.

One benefit of My Chase Plan is that you'll continue to earn rewards on your purchases. Also, if you want to pay off your balance early, there's no penalty. Finally, if you have an introductory 0% APR promotion on your account, there won't be a monthly fee if you opt for My Chase Plan payments.

Is My Chase Plan Worth It?

On the surface, My Chase Plan sounds like it could save you money because the fixed monthly fee is rather low. But keep in mind that the fee stays the same even as your balance drops, unlike interest which would decrease with the balance over time.

Before you decide to use My Chase Plan, run the numbers. 

For example, let's take the $689.85 purchase above and use the 12-month plan. With this plan, the fixed monthly fee would cost you a total of $37.20. 

Now, let's say your interest rate is 16.99%. If you were to pay the balance off over 12 months, you'd end up paying $65.12 in interest, so My Chase Plan would save you money.

But if the scenario were different—with higher monthly fees or a longer repayment period, the cost of the fees could exceed the interest charges.

My Chase Plan could also be helpful for anyone who struggles to make more than the minimum payment on their credit card every month. With fixed monthly payments like an installment loan, you can't procrastinate in paying off the balance.

That said, if you can afford to pay off your balance in full every month, it's best to avoid any payment plan that would cost you extra money, whether in interest or fees.

  1. At the top of the Account Bar, click the + (plus sign) button..
  2. Select Chase from the list of financial institutions and enter your login credentials.

  5. Click Next on the following prompt and complete the Add Account process.

Have you ever made your credit card payment, then eagerly waited for the payment to be applied to your account? Maybe you needed to clear up some available credit for a large payment or you're hoping to reduce your balance for a credit report update.

Both the timing and method of your credit card payment affect how quickly the payment is applied to your account.

The amount of time it takes for a payment to post to your credit card account depends on how you pay, when you pay, your credit card issuer, and your bank.

Which Payments Post Faster?

Electronic payments made online or by phone on a business day and during business hours will post to your credit card account faster than a mailed check. With electronic payments, you don’t have to wait for the mail to reach your credit card issuer.

Since payment posting and processing times can vary by the credit card issuer, the best way to figure out when your credit card payment will post to your account is to contact your credit card issuer. They’ll be able to give you a precise answer. If you already have a pending payment, your card issuer can let you know when you can expect that payment to post to your account and reflect in your available credit.

When Will Online or Phone Payments Post to Your Account?

While electronic payments are faster, they’re not instant. It can take one to three business days for an online or phone payment to post to your credit card account and reflect in your available credit. That’s because payments made using a checking account and routing number are processed in batches overnight and not in real time. Payments made on Friday nights or over the weekend may not post to your account until the following business week.

After you've made your payment, you can call or check your online account to see whether the payment has posted, along with your current balance and available credit.

When Will a Mailed Payment Post to Your Account?

Mailed credit card payments take the longest to post to your account. The credit card payment has to be delivered to your credit card issuer. Then, the payment processing center has to open up hundreds of envelopes, retrieve payments, and post the payments to each account.

Increased mail volume and postal holidays can delay mailed payments around holidays. Make sure you consider this when you mail a credit card payment.

Linked Checking and Credit Card Accounts

If your credit card is linked to your checking account, that is, both accounts are with the same bank, your credit card payment will post to your account the same day. This is the case with Bank of America, for example. Of course, you'll need to be sure the funds are available in your checking account.

Payment Posting vs. Timely Payments

Even though your credit card payment may not reflect in your available credit immediately, as long as you submit the payment information online (or by phone) by the cut-off time on the due date, your payment will be considered on time. However, if the payment is returned by your bank, for example, because you don't have enough money in your account, you’ll be charged a returned check fee of up to $40.

Freeing Up Credit in a Certain Timeframe

Adding Chase Accounts to Quicken

Overview

When adding Chase accounts to your Quicken software, you will be required to go through a verification process specific to Chase.

Instructions

Quicken for Windows

In Quicken:

  1. At the top of the Account Bar, click the + (plus sign) button..
  2. Select Chase from the list of financial institutions and enter your login credentials. 
  3. Select a delivery method for the Identification Code and click OK.
  4. Once you have received the Identification Code, enter it and click OK.
  5. Click Next on the following prompt and complete the Add Account process.

At the Chase website:

  1. Log in to your Chase account in the Chase website.
  2. Click the Profile & Settings button in the upper right corner and select AccountSafe.
  3. Select Desktop Apps from the left sidebar.
  4. Follow the steps to authorize desktop app access.
  5. Navigate to your Secure messages inbox.

  1. In your Secure Message Center, select the message titled Action Required for Quicken...

  1. In the message, click the Confirm Your Identity Now link.

  1. Click Next on the following prompt and the process is complete.

Quicken for Mac

In Quicken:

  1. Click on Accounts > New from the menu bar, and then select the type of account you want to create (such as Checking, Savings, or Credit Card). 
  2. Enter Chase in the Search field, select Chase from the list, and click Continue.
  3. Enter the username and password you use to sign in to Chase's website.
  4. Select a delivery method for the Identification Code and click OK.
  5. Once you have received the Identification Code, enter it and click OK.
  6. Click Continue on the following prompt and complete the Add Account process.

At the Chase website:

  1. Log in to your Chase account in the Chase website.
  2. Click the Profile & Settings button in the upper right corner and select AccountSafe.
  3. Select Desktop Apps from the left sidebar.
  4. Follow the steps to authorize desktop app access.
  5. Navigate to your Secure messages inbox.

Other

If your confirmation message has expired

The confirmation message sent to your Secure Message Center is only valid for a few days. After it expires, you can follow the steps below to verify your information and allow Quicken to connect to your Chase accounts. 

  1. Sign in to your Chase account at the Chase website. 
  2. Click the profile icon in the upper right and select AccountSafe from the dropdown list.

  1. On the following screen, click the AccountSafe menu.
