Can I Check if Someone Cashed My Certified Bank Check?
You probably rarely write or receive a paper-based check these days, but they still serve a very important purpose. If you’re making a major purchase, for instance, the fees associated with electronic payments can make a paper check a better option. In particular, a certified bank check is a great way to safely pay someone else. Another benefit of paying by bank check is that your financial institution will be able to track its status once the recipient has deposited or cashed it.
What Is a Certified Check?
Paying by Certified Bank Check
Tracing a Certified Check
It’s important not to lose the certified check once you have it in hand since it can’t be replaced that easily. Once you’ve given it to the recipient, you might want to know if it’s been cashed or deposited. If you watch your bank account, you should be able to see when the funds have cleared but if you still need verification, you’ll need to contact your bank.
Whether you call or visit the branch, a representative should be able to determine the status of the check. If you have contact information for the recipient, it might be just as easy to call and ask if all is OK with the check on her end.

How Much Money Can You Deposit Before it is Reported?
5 Min. Read
If you deposit more than $10,000 cash in your bank account, your bank has to report the deposit to the government.
The guidelines for large cash transactions for banks and financial institutions are set by the Bank Secrecy Act, also known as the Currency and Foreign Transactions Reporting Act. The goal is to prevent money laundering by criminals using cash deposits to disguise their illegal source of funds.

Are Banks Required to Report Large Deposits?
When a cash deposit of $10,000 or more is made, the bank or financial institution is required to file a form reporting this. This form reports any transaction or series of related transactions in which the total sum is $10,000 or more. So, two related cash deposits of $5,000 or more also have to be reported.
Related transactions are defined in two ways:
- Two or more related payments within 24 hours, or
- Two or more related transactions within 12 months
When $10,000 or more of cash is used to buy a negotiable instrument such as a bank draft or a cashier's check, the issuing financial institution also has to report this. This rule applies to American dollars as well as foreign currency worth more than $10,000.
As a Business Owner, Am I Required to Report Large Cash Transactions?
Banks aren’t the only ones on the hook for reporting cash transactions over $10,000. If your trade or business receives a cash payment of $10,000 or more, you’ll need to file Form 8300.
Filing Form 8300
If your business receives a cash payment over $10,000, you also have to report the transaction. To do so, you’ll use Form 8300, which offers valuable information to the Internal Revenue Service and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). It helps the agencies combat money laundering that is used to facilitate various criminal activities such as drug dealing and terrorist financing.
According to the IRS, here are some things you need to keep in mind while filing Form 8300.
Trades and businesses which receive more than $10,000 in cash in a single transaction or in related transactions have to file IRS/FinCEN Form 8300, Report of Cash Payments Over $10,000 Received in a Trade or Business.
Transactions that require Form 8300 include, but are not limited to:
- Escrow arrangement contributions
- Pre-existing debt payments
- Negotiable instrument purchases
- Reimbursement of expenses
- Making or repaying a loan
- Sale of goods or services
- Sale of real property
- Sale of intangible property
- Rental of real or personal property
- Exchange of cash for other cash
- Custodial trust contributions
The cash can be received as a lump sum, installment payments that cause the total cash received within one year of the initial payment to total more than $10,000 and previously unreported payments that cause the total cash received within a 12-month period to total more than $10,000.
If the cash deposits were made to a joint account, you will have to identify each depositor.
The cash can be in American or foreign currency.
Cash also includes cashier’s checks, bank drafts, traveler’s checks, and money orders. If a customer pays with a cashier’s check, bank draft, traveler’s check, or money order that is greater than $10,000, the issuing financial institution will need to report the transaction.
If a customer pays with one of these instruments and it is less than $10,000, you will need to file form 8300 in some instances, such as for the sale of a collectible or travel and entertainment, where the related sales price of all transactions is more than $10,000. The reference guide for form 8300 has more detail on what is considered cash.
You have to file the form within 15 days after receiving the cash.
You can file the formelectronically or mail it to the IRS.
A copy of this form is sent to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). Businesses that fail to report these transactions can have severe penalties imposed on them.
How Much Cash Can You Deposit Before It Is Reported to the IRS?
If you deposit less than $10,000 cash in a specific time period, it may not have to be reported.
However, when a customer makes multiple smaller cash payments in a 12-month period, the 15 days countdown for reporting to the IRS starts as soon as the total paid exceeds $10,000.
The IRS may also look at suspected "structured" deposits that were made to evade the $10,000-or-above reporting requirements. For example, if you’re consistently depositing $9,800 for two weeks to evade the IRS. In this case, the bank will file a Suspicious Activity Report with the FinCEN. They can also file voluntarily file reports for suspicious deposits that are less than $10,000.
As a small business owner, if you foresee a time when you would be receiving enough funds to exceed $10,000 in deposits in the near future, talk with the bank or credit union. They will let you know the best way to adhere to the rules outlined by the Bank Secrecy Act.
How To: Identifying Numbers On Your Check
How to Find Your Check Routing Number
Finding your 9-digit check routing number is useful when you’re setting up direct deposits or automatic payments.
At the bottom of your check are 3 groups of numbers: your routing number, account number and check number.
The bank’s routing number is the first set of numbers in the lower left corner of your check. Routing numbers (or sometimes also called an ABA number) are 9-digits that are used to identify the financial institution associated with your account.
The character symbol around the numbers is not part of the routing number on a check. Routing numbers are public. Bank Five Nine's routing number is 075902421
You can also find our routing number at the bottom of our website in the right hand corner.
You’ll find your account number on your check immediately after the routing number. It’s the longer of the last 2 groups of numbers. You can see it by looking at your personal checks or signing in to your account online. Your account number is private and unique to your bank account.
The check number is usually the last set of numbers on your personal check. It’s also the shortest set of numbers on the check, typically 3 or 4 digits long. Your check number helps you keep track of which check you’re writing. This number it is also listed on the top right of your check.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cashier's Checks
If you’re considering getting a cashier’s check or confused about how the process works, MyBankTracker has updated its basic guide on some frequently-asked cashier's check questions.
Also, check out cashier's check fees from the top biggest banks in America.
What is a cashier’s check?
A cashier’s check is a check that is issued by a bank, in which funds are guaranteed by the bank since it comes from the financial institution.
Cashier’s checks are usually necessary when a person needs to make a large purchase (think a house or a car) and the recipient requires a guarantee they will get paid.
A cashier’s check provides good reassurance that the check will clear.
Once issued, a cashier’s check must be cashed within 90 to 120 days of the date of issuance.
What’s the difference between a cashier’s check and money order?
Both cashier’s checks and money orders essentially do the same thing, but the difference is that a cashier’s check is written out by a bank, whereas a money order is not.
Both payment methods are drawn from funds that are guaranteed: a cashier’s check is guaranteed by the issuing bank, and a money order has already been paid for by the person who purchased it.
A cashier’s check can only be acquired from a bank, but a money order can be purchased at a variety of locations, including the post office, credit union, grocery store, and more.
Money orders usually have dollar limits on them, but cashier’s checks can go for much bigger amounts.
How do you get a cashier’s check?
There are varying policies at different banks, but there are a couple of options of getting a cashier’s check.
If you don’t have a bank account, you can go to a bank to see if they issue checks for non-banking customers, and if they do, there’s a chance you might be charged a fee for getting the cashier’s check.
If you’re not a customer of the bank you’re purchasing a cashier’s check from, you will need to have the full amount of the check at the time of purchase.
If you’re getting a cashier’s check directly from the institution you’re already banking with, make sure you have the full amount available in your account.
When you get a cashier’s check, you will need to know the exact name of the person you’re making the check out to.
Once you get the check, remember to retain a portion of the check for your records.
How much do they cost to buy?
If you’re already a customer at the bank you’re seeking a cashier’s check from, you can find the cashier’s check fee in your checking account fee schedule.
We compiled a chart of the fees at the ten largest banks in America, and the prices range from $7-$10.
You should always check with your bank before acquire a cashier’s check.
In addition, if you are not a customer of the bank where you’re buying the cashier’s check, the bank might have different fee structures.
Sometimes banks charge a flat rate, and sometimes they will charge a percentage of the check total.
Some banks might refuse to grant a cashier’s check to customers who are not already banking with them.
How do you cancel a cashier’s check?
If you are still in possession of a cashier’s check and you want to cancel it, bring it back to the bank where you originally got the check and you will usually have to fill out a deposit slip to have the funds put back into your account.
A teller will give you further direction on what to write on the backside of the check.
What do you do if you lose a cashier’s check?
If you have misplaced a cashier’s check, go to the bank and put a stop payment on it.
There will be a fee to stop the payment and it will usually be pricier than to stop payment on a regular personal check.
Different banks have different regulations, but once a cashier’s check has been canceled, you have to wait for a period of up to 90 days before the bank can issue you a refund.
What are some cashier’s checks scams to watch out for?
There is an increasing number of frauds related to cashier’s checks, so it’s always important to beware of scams.
One popular scam involves a person paying you with a cashier’s check for more than the amount agreed, and then asking you to cash the check and pay them the difference.
A scam artist replies to a classified ad or auction posting, offers to pay for the item with a check, and then comes up with a reason for writing the check for more than the purchase price.
The scammer asks the seller to wire back the difference after depositing the check.
The seller does it, and later, when the scammer’s check bounces, the seller is left liable for the entire amount.

Can You Cancel a Cashier's Check?
A cashier’s check is purchased by you, issued by the bank, and—assuming the check is legitimate—guaranteed not to bounce.
But what if a cashier's check is lost or stolen? In certain circumstances, your financial institution can cancel or issue a stop payment on a cashier's check, though you'll likely have to fill out some paperwork.
Cashier's Check Basics
Cashier's checks are often used for significant transactions and large purchases (such as a down payment on a home) when both buyer and seller need assurance the check will clear. To get a cashier's check, you must have the full amount of the check already available in your account. When you visit the bank, the bank will issue the check using the funds from your account, sometimes charging a small fee. Unless there’s clearly fraud involved (such as a forged endorsement), the bank will honor the check and make the funds available to the payee quickly.
However, that security is exactly what makes it hard to cancel cashier’s checks. If you could simply stop payment on those checks at any time, they wouldn't be as useful as guaranteed payments. Still, there are ways to protect yourself in the event of a lost or stolen check.
Unfortunately, the process takes time, and your bank might not honor your request. Learn what steps to take if you need to cancel a cashier's check.
How to Cancel a Cashier’s Check
If your check is lost or stolen (whether you’re making the payment or you received it as payment) you need to contact the issuing bank immediately.
Report the Lost or Stolen Check
Stopping payment on a cashier's check may be allowed if the check was stolen or fraud has been committed. You'll first need to let the bank know that something unusual is happening with the check so they can flag it for a closer look in case it comes in.
Provide a Declaration of Loss
Next, you'll file a declaration of loss with the bank that issued, or printed, the check. If you received the check as payment, ideally you have a copy of it. If not, you may need to contact your customer to find out which bank issued the check so you can make the call.
You need to provide a written statement made under penalty of perjury that you don’t have the check and you’re not going to find it. When you file a declaration of loss, you make a claim to the funds, but you won’t receive the funds until either 90 days after the check was issued, or 90 days after you file the declaration, whichever is later.
During the 90-day period, the bank might still pay the check to whoever presents it. If the check was stolen, you can assume that the thief needs to forge your signature for endorsement or do something else illegal, so the bank may notice (assuming you’ve alerted them to the fact that the check is missing).
If you simply changed your mind about making a payment—but you already sent the check—there’s nothing you can do to stop a valid payee from depositing or cashing the check and claiming the funds. If there’s been a mistake or dispute, you’ll need to recover the check (or the funds) from the payee another way. That may require legal action or negotiation without involving the bank.
After the 90-day period ends, if the check is still outstanding, the bank will release the funds to whoever has a claim on the money: either the payee or the account owner, depending on the situation. If somebody else tries to deposit the check after that, the bank will return the check without honoring it.
Replacement Cashier's Checks
What if you need the money sooner? Cashier’s checks are typically used for large amounts, and the bank took those funds from your account (or took it in cash) when issuing the check. Unless you’ve got plenty of extra money, you may have a cash flow problem.
You can always ask for a replacement check, but don’t get your hopes up. Again, the bank is on the hook to pay for the first 90 days after issuing the check. Banks face severe consequences if they refuse to pay on a cashier’s check—unless they have a really good reason not to. The bank might simply issue a replacement check if they’re willing to risk having two checks out there, but that’s the exception and not the rule. Your odds are best if the dollar amount is small and you can convince the bank that the original check will never surface.
Sometimes banks reissue cashier’s checks if you sign an indemnity agreement: If the original check is presented and the bank has to pay twice, you’ll have to reimburse the bank. For this to work, the bank needs to believe that you’re good for the money, and that’s a challenge with large checks. You could possibly get a bond issued by an insurance company that covers your liability, but that’s difficult and expensive (and not a realistic option for most people).
Unused Cashier’s Checks
What if you still have the check, but you just don’t need it anymore? For example, if you've decided not to go through with a purchase at the last minute.
You don’t need to file a declaration of loss if you still have the check. Contact your bank and ask what the requirements are to return the funds to your account. Typically, you'll return to the bank with your check and write “Not used for the purpose intended” on it and give it to the teller. Your bank should return the funds to your account once they get the check back.
However, some banks make it hard to cancel a check that you’re not going to use. If your bank refuses to return funds to you, you may need to wait longer or fight harder to get your cash. Ask to speak to management. Then, vote with your feet and open an account somewhere else.
Get Professional Help If Needed
If you're considering canceling a cashier’s check, you're probably in the middle of an important transaction, and there might be a lot of money at stake. You must make sure you know the details of how your specific bank handles these situations. You may also need to meet with a local attorney to evaluate your risk and discuss your rights.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What happens if a cashier's check is lost in the mail?
The steps discussed here work for any situation in which the cashier's check was lost—whether it was lost in the mail or fell out of your pocket. If you haven't mailed the check yet, you can help prevent loss by paying for a tracking service that allows you to follow the check every step of the way until it reaches its destination.
Who investigates cashier's check fraud?
When you suspect fraud, you can file a police report. Your bank may ask you to do this when you first contact them.

What is a cashier’s check?
A cashier’s check is different than a personal check because Capital One guarantees the amount on the check -- it is essentially as good as cash for the payee. Unlike a personal check, funds are immediately withdrawn from your account when completing an order for a cashier’s check. Cashier's checks are a great way to make large payments for things like a down payment on a car or home.
How much does it cost?
A $20 fee is applied to a cashier’s check ordered online and covers expedited shipping for delivery.
When will it arrive once ordered?
If ordered before 2 p.m. ET on a business day, your check will arrive next business day via FedEx. Orders will not be delivered on weekends or holidays. A check ordered after 2 p.m. ET on Friday will be delivered the following Tuesday.
Some addresses are not eligible for next-day shipping (typically Alaska and Hawaii). These orders are usually delivered within 3–5 business days.

What are the limits?
Online cashier’s checks have a $500,000 daily limit and $250,000 limit per check.
Can I stop a payment after a cashier’s check has been ordered? Because the funds are withdrawn from your account immediately when ordering a cashier’s check, it may be impossible to stop the payment.
What are my other options?
The fee for cashier’s checks purchased at one of our branches is $10. Depending on the amount, you can also send money through our bill pay services, by wire transfer, or to friends or family using Zelle®.
