Slain Colorado woman placed Craigslist ad for hitman to kill her, suspect claims

A Colorado man accused of killing 19-year-old Natalie Marie Bollinger told police he shot her after he replied to her Craigslist ad seeking a hitman — for herself, investigators said in court documents obtained Monday.

But before the killing, the man, Joseph Michael Lopez, 22, tried to talk her out of suicide, he told Adams County deputies, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by NBC News. After he failed to change her mind, they went for a drive and stopped by the side of the road, where they said a prayer together as Lopez knelt on the ground beside Bollinger and shot her once in the back of the head with a 9mm firearm, according to the affidavit.

Lopez said he used a gun that Bollinger gave him, which she said he could keep as payment, according to the affidavit.

The body of Bollinger, who lived in Broomfield, was found Dec. 29 in an unincorporated area of Adams County, east of Boulder, Broomfield police said. Lopez was being held without bail Monday in the Adams County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder pending a court hearing Wednesday, according to court records.

Investigators said Lopez told them last Thursday that he was browsing the "Women Seeking Men" section of Craigslist when he stopped on an "unusual post" with the title "I want to put a hit on myself." The Adams County Sheriff's Office wouldn't confirm that such an ad had been placed, a spokesman told NBC News on Monday.

According to the arrest affidavit, Lopez said that he replied to the ad because he had suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts when he was in high school and thought he could help.

But Bollinger couldn't be persuaded, he said, telling investigators that she said she wanted to be executed from behind so she wouldn't see the gun and that she "wanted it to happen quickly," according to the arrest affidavit.

Friends and relatives told investigators that Bollinger had a history of suicidal thoughts, according to the affidavit. But they said they had found no suicide note or any other communication indicating that she wanted to take her own life, it said. In fact, the affidavit said, she had applied for a job on Dec. 28, the day before she was killed.

Adams County Sheriff Michael McIntosh said Friday, when the arrest was announced, that Lopez was tracked down through dozens of text messages on Bollinger's cellphone.

"A 19-year-old's phone, there's a lot of data there," McIntosh said.

When investigators called to arrange an interview, Lopez "made the comment that he thought he might know why" they were calling, McIntosh said.

According to the arrest affidavit, "Joseph Lopez did tell us that it was eating away at him and that several times he felt like just calling the police himself and confessing to shooting Natalie Bollinger."

McIntosh said Friday that no one else is believed to have been involved.

CU-Boulder police offer ‘safe zone’ for Craigslist deals

Deal hunters in Boulder now have a safe place to meet buyers and sellers from Craigslist and other websites.

The CU-Boulder Police Department says it has set up a "safe zone" for transactions on campus near the department's offices at 1050 Regent Drive.

"The idea is to cut down on potential fraud and robberies by offering this location. While we encourage the use of this parking lot for transactions, our personnel may not participate or act as official witnesses in the transactions," the department said in a Facebook post. "Our employees are not available for legal advice or allowed to settle civil or pricing disputes between parties involved in transactions occurring at this location."

Other police departments across the country have recently set up similar safe zones to head off potential crimes. Last month, a Longmont woman was brutally attacked after responding to a Craigslist ad for baby clothes.

They did not start building CJs until 1957 and that is a 12 colt flat head, so it is really no earlier than mid-80s...but that does make it a former PLA bike and probably not too bad, but will make a Ural M72M or a Dnepr K750 look like a BMW in comparison...

'Ghost town' up for sale on Craigslist for $350,000

CABIN CREEK, CO -- If you enjoy solitude, an entire town in Colorado that's about 45 minutes from Denver could be yours for $350,000. The town, Cabin Creek, is located just outside of Byers, Colorado in rural Adams County.

The owner calls it a ghost town, but Cabin Creek has potential. For $350,000, you get nearly five acres, plus an old gas station, an 8-room motel, a roadside restaurant cafe, an 8-space RV park, two houses and a private shooting range.

The current owner of the town, James Johnson, is selling Cabin Creek on Craigslist.

"There's something cool about tiny towns," Johnson told KDVR. "Anytime I would stop on Route 66, I'd see places like this and I just love them."

Johnson first drove by Cabin Creek 36 years ago and felt like he had to have it, but people thought he was crazy.

"It was full of chickens when I first got the place, so I was telling everybody I had a whole motel full of chicks," said Johnson.

However, it wasn't that long about that Cabin Creek was a great town - just ask around in Byers. Joan Lippet remembers Cabin Creek in its heyday. The couple who owned the town and ran cafe, served the best chicken fried steak in the state.

"A lot of people just went out there for the meals because they were so good," said Lippet.

But sometime back in the 70s, something bad happened at Cabin Creek.

"There was a murder there. There was some people that they took in, felt sorry for or something, and they found out the couple had money," said Lippett.

That's when Cabin Creek's fate as a ghost town was sealed.

"There was nobody here, so these buildings sat totally vacant. Nothing going on out here for a number of years," said Johnson.

Johnson once had big plans for the town. He wanted to turn it in to a Route 66-style tourist attraction. But now his wife has bigger plans: retirement.

Johnson has installed some new electric panels, some new wiring, a new well and new sewer, but admits the property needs more work, including the RV park and cafe.

"We would like to sell," Johnson wrote on Craigslist. "We have some traveling we would like to do and this project keeps us here."

Colo. pot dealers advertise online before rules in place

Robert Allen, Fort Collins Coloradoan

Justice News

SAN FRANCISCO –Ramil Heydarov and Orkhan Aliyev pleaded guilty today to conspiracy charges related to a scheme to defraud purchasers of vehicles on the Craigslist website by rolling back the odometers on vehicles before reselling them, announced Acting United States Attorney Stephanie M. Hinds, Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Tatum King, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Craig D. Fair.  The guilty pleas were accepted by the Honorable Susan Illston, Senior U.S. District Judge, and, along with the October 12, 2021, guilty plea of Seymur Khalilov, establishes that all three defendants charged in the case have now pleaded guilty to fraud conspiracy charges.

According to the defendants’ plea agreements, from at least October 2017 through December 2020, Khalilov, 32; Heydarov, 31; and Aliyev, 32, all www craigslist com usa colorado San Jose, conspired to purchase high-mileage vehicles, roll back the odometers, and falsify documentation to make the vehicles appear newer.  Specifically, the co-conspirators altered the odometers of numerous vehicles and altered registrations and titles, among other items, to fraudulently decrease the mileage readings of the vehicles and, thus, increase their sales value.  The co-conspirators then posted advertisements of the vehicles on Craigslist to advertise the www craigslist com usa colorado to victims who were not aware of the fraudulent alterations. Additionally, the defendants admitted using doctored driver’s licenses containing their photograph but the names of prior vehicle owners to facilitate the sale of these vehicles. The co-conspirators each acknowledged that the goal of the conspiracy was to sell vehicles to victims for an increased price based on the fraudulent odometer readings. According to the plea agreements, the co-conspirators sold at least 78 vehicles with rolled back odometer readings, resulting in a total loss to the victims of greater than $550,000.

All three defendants were charged in a single criminal complaint www craigslist com usa colorado on May 3, 2021, www craigslist com usa colorado each was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1349.  As a result of today’s proceedings, all three defendants now have pleaded guilty to the charge. In addition, the defendants each have agreed as part of their plea agreements to pay restitution to the victims of the conspiracy in amounts reflecting the defendant’s respective role in the conspiracy.  Khalilov has agreed to pay restitution in an amount between $360,000 and $534,072 that will be set by the court. Heydarov agreed to pay restitution in the amount of $379,235 and Aliyev agreed to pay restitution in the amount of $196,578.

Judge Illston scheduled the defendants’ sentencing for February 4, 2022.  In addition to restitution, the conspiracy charge carries a maximum www craigslist com usa colorado prison term of up to 20 years and a $250,000 fine.  The court also may order a term of supervised release to follow the prison term.  However, any sentence following conviction would be imposed by the court only after consideration of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the federal statute governing imposition of a sentence, 18 U.S.C. § 3553.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Leif Dautch and Ankur Shingal are prosecuting the case with the assistance of Marina Ponomarchuk and Soana Katoa.  The prosecution is the result of an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation with assistance from the California Department of Motor Vehicles Investigations Division in Vallejo, the San Ramon Police Department, and the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration Office of Odometer Fraud Investigations.

  USATODAY

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Now that marijuana is legal for people older than 21, home delivery of medical-grade pot is just a few clicks away.

Advertisements boast "100% organic" and "friendly deliveries made to your door," offering strains such as "Cadillac Kush" and "Green Candy." The ads are illustrated with photos of large, flowering marijuana buds.

"I buy from the dispensaries and sell it to people," said John, who drives the 25 miles from Nunn, Colo., to here and as far as Berthoud, 50 miles away, to deliver pot to people who call his phone number posted on craigslist. "I make these people happy."

John, who declined to be identified with his full name because of privacy concerns, makes about $100 a day after accounting for expenses such as transportation. He receives three to five phone inquiries each day as a result of the ad and doesn't care whether people have state-approved medical marijuana licenses, he said.

Since Colorado legalized marijuana in November, it's OK for people older than 21 to possess it, grow it and give it to others without remuneration. But until the state legislature approves regulations for storefront pot-selling businesses, it's not legal to sell to anyone without a medical-marijuana license. Washington state also legalized recreational use and possession of marijuana in the November elections.

Fort Collins police Sgt. Gary Shaklee said he's not aware of any "clear criminal charge" for people who buy marijuana off the black market, as long as it's less than an ounce. But police say selling any amount of pot to people without a medical-marijuana license — known as a red card — remains a felony, just as it was before pot was legalized.

But John said: "I'd like to see a jury convict me for pot when it's already legal."

'Clearly' illegal

A headline posted on one of John's ads in February is clear: "No Red Card? . We can help!"

Denver defense lawyer Sean McAllister, who helped frame the language of Amendment 64 legalizing marijuana and advocated for it, said what John is offering is clearly illegal.

"It is amazing to me that craigslist is a place where people put out in the public domain" advertisements for nonmedical pot sales, he said. "It is a felony to distribute marijuana illegally."

Other ads are less bold, offering pot in exchange for donations or purchase of other goods. The Fort Collins craigslist March 1 had three ads that were blatantly offering marijuana to the general public along with about nine that specified medical-only sales. In nearby Boulder, Colo., seven ads solicited the general public, 15 medical-marijuana users. Denver with a metro area of 2.5 million people had hundreds of online pot ads in both categories.

Law enforcers www craigslist com usa colorado Larimer County haven't been going after the advertisers, who usually deal in small amounts. Fort Collins police Capt. Don Vagge said he wasn't even aware of the ads selling marijuana to the public.

"We just don't have the resources to watch, specifically, for that," he said, adding that police have received tips and investigated craigslist ads for crimes such as prostitution.

He said offers of marijuana in exchange for donations could be protected by Amendment 64 to the Colorado Constitution legalizing marijuana but that, at this point, that would be determined case by case.

"Some of that would depend on the price of the items you were buying," he said. "If the regular price is $25, and you pay $25 and they give you free marijuana, that, to me, would not be remuneration for the dope."

But if the marijuana was sold for even $10 more, it could be illegal, he said.

"There's still a great deal of confusion between what's legal and what isn't for (citizens)," Vagge said.

On the Colorado Springs craigslist, people have posted ads willing to trade marijuana for items such as video games, a washing machine and mountain bikes. A Boulder poster offered pot in exchange for concert tickets, and "Ms. Nice Girl" in Denver claimed to be offering her surplus medical marijuana in exchange for donations toward her medical expenses.

McAllister said the advertisements are illustrative of a "gap in the law" between legalization and the development of a legal sales framework.

"You're seeing the black market kind of poke its head up from the underground," he said. "I think it's very dangerous. Any link between you and selling marijuana means you could be charged and arrested."

He also said that, in areas of the state where police are going after pot sellers, it doesn't seem to embody the spirit of Amendment 64's intent to regulate marijuana like alcohol.

"There's nothing comparable to this with alcohol," he said. "There would be no police investigation if you sold a case of beer to your neighbor."

Legal goods, illegal sales

All of the craigslist ads for marijuana divulged a way to contact the seller, yet most of the Northern Colorado posters declined to be interviewed. One man said he was just doing it for a couple weeks to get enough customers. His ad indicated he would sell to anyone, but he insisted he sells only to people who can prove they have a medical marijuana license.

Officials with Fort Collins Police Services, Larimer County Sheriff's Office and the Larimer County District Attorney's Office all said they were unaware of any cases of craigslist marijuana sellers being prosecuted in Larimer County.

The Coloradoan sent a press inquiry to craigslist asking about its policy with ads for marijuana. Its terms of use indicate users are prohibited from posting content toward provision or receipt of illegal goods or services.

Adams County Sheriff Michael McIntosh said Friday, when the arrest was announced, www craigslist com usa colorado Lopez was tracked down through dozens of text messages on Bollinger's cellphone.
