Given that most of us only get a new debit card every few years, it’s easy to forget just what’s involved when that happens.

It’s why a simple question like “When you get a new debit card does the card number change?” can suddenly hit you from nowhere, as you start to second guess what will happen.

Does your PIN or account number change? Do you need to change direct debits?

And, most importantly: will you still have access to your money?

Luckily, in the vast majority of cases, getting a new credit or debit card is a very straightforward process. As you’ll see below, with a few key steps and a couple of precautions, you’ll barely notice when you get a new debit card.

When you get a new debit card does the card number change?

Generally, the card number does not change when you get a new debit card. However, the expiration date and the CVV (card verification value) will be different on the new debit card.

However, there are some situations where this isn’t the case. The first is when you have ordered a new card due to your old card being lost or stolen. Because of the risk of a thief making purchases on your old debit card, the bank will issue you a new debit card with a new number.

In addition, if you’ve reported a case of identity theft, either suspected or actual, your bank will issue a new card with a new number. This is just in case the person who’s potentially stolen your identity has gained access to your card details.

It’s best to discuss a situation like this with your bank directly, as some will actually recommend that you close your account and open a new one. That way, any banking details that the thief managed to get hold of will be useless.

Will a replacement debit card have the same number?

A replacement debit card will have the same number if the old card expired or no longer works, but will have a new number or if your old card was lost, stolen or if there’s a situation of identity theft.

Essentially, as above, a new number will only be issued if there’s a security risk of you keeping the old one.

When you get a new debit card, does the PIN number change?

The PIN for your new debit card will be the same as the old one, unless your old debit card was lost or stolen or there’s suspected identity theft. In those cases, a new PIN will be sent to you separately.

This means that if you change your new PIN to be the same as the old one, you’re potentially creating a security risk for yourself.

Your account number can only change if you take steps that lead to it changing, such as if you close your account and open a new one.

As mentioned above, some banks actually recommend that you do this if you’re the victim of identity theft. This means that, in those cases, an indirect result of you getting a new debit card could in fact be that your account number does change, but this will only be if you tell your bank to do so.

As such, this is rare and definitely shouldn’t be relied upon compared to simply replacing your soon-to-expire debit card.

How do I know when my debit card expires?

The expiration date of your debit card will be on your card, written as MM/YY (month and year). Your card will be able to be used until the last day of the month in which it expires.

For example, if your old card says that it expires on 08/2024, you’ll be able to use it until 11:59pm on 31 August 2024.

Usually, your bank will send out a replacement card a few weeks before your old debit card expires.

If I get a new debit card, do I need to change direct debits?

You do not need to change any direct debits or standing orders if you get a new debit card. You will, however, have to change any automatic payments linked to your old card.

This means that when your card details change, including when a new expiration date and CVV applies to your new card even if the card number stays the same, those automatic payments have to be updated so that the details reflect those on your new card.

Even in those cases, you won’t be able to request a specific debit card number. Your bank will, however, issue a card with a new number as a security measure, to prevent any unauthorized transactions just in case someone has gained access to your old card.

Getting a new debit card will stop any recurring payments made through your old card. Your card details will have to be updated in the system for payments to start being processed again.

This is because even if you got a new debit card and the card number didn’t change, your CVV and expiration date will have. This means that two pieces of the security puzzle won’t fit anymore, meaning that the payment won’t be able to be processed.

If your debit card is worn out, your bank will allow you to request a replacement card but there may be a fee, the exact amount of which should be checked in your Schedule of Fees.

What should I do when I get a new debit card?

When you get a new debit card, it’s important that you go through the following steps as soon as you receive it.

1. Activate the new card

Activating the new card should be your first priority, to avoid someone else inadvertently getting access to the card and being able to activate it (and use it) on your behalf.

This usually involves either calling a phone number, where you’ll be asked to follow the prompts to automatically activate the card. Alternatively, some banks have you do this through their app or their online banking system.

2. Sign the back of it

Most debit cards have a strip on the bank of the card that notes that the card won’t be valid unless it’s signed. 

This is also another reason why you should go through this process as soon as possible after receiving your new card: so someone else doesn’t find the card and sign it before you, making it possible that they’ll then be able to use it.

3. Cut up and dispose of your old card

Your final step should be to cut up your old card in as small pieces as possible so that anyone who finds a piece won’t be able to have all your details. This includes making sure that your card number and name are on different pieces and that the chip or magnetic strip are also in separate pieces.

From there, don’t put all the pieces in the same trash bag and then be done with it. Instead, spread them out in different trash cans over different days. 

It may sound a bit spy-ish, but it’s a very easy way to protect yourself from some very serious problems if someone were to get your old card and take advantage of that.

As you can see, there’s no need to worry if you get a new debit card that you’re going to mess something up and lose access to your money as, in the vast majority of cases, there’s no problem at all.

At the same time, it’s completely understandable that you may have forgotten what was involved last time you got a replacement card. If you get a random, unsolicited credit card in the mail that you didn’t apply for, here’s what to do.

I recently received a "replacement" credit card in the mail. But I closed this credit card account years ago and didn't apply for a new card. I don't want it. Is this legal? What should I do?

Under Regulation Z, which implements the Truth in Lending Act, it's illegal for a credit card company, store, or other entity to send you a credit card you didn't request. (12 C.F.R. § 226.12). So, most companies don't send out straight-forward unsolicited cards. But some companies try to get around the law by sending "replacement" credit cards for accounts that are no longer active. Sending these types of cards, if unsolicited, still violates the law.

However, if your card is active, or if you made an oral or written request for the card, a company may send a replacement card—even if the new card is usable at more stores or has different features. And, occasionally, a bank might issue a credit card in error.

What to Do if You Get an Unsolicited Credit Card

Don't just throw an unsolicited card in the trash. Unfortunately, it's possible that someone applied for the credit card in your name, which means you're a victim of identity theft. If that's the case—or you have any other reason to suspect identity theft—you'll need to take steps to prevent further fraud on other accounts. For one thing, you should immediately place a freeze on your credit files.

Also, you'll need to close the account. If you don't, your credit file might show that you have an account with an open line of credit. Some creditors won't extend credit to people they believe already have too much credit. Having an unused account could be grounds for denying you future credit or limiting increases on existing accounts.

Closing the Account

Before you cut up and toss the card, make a copy and then call the issuer. But don't call the activation phone number on the sticker on the front of the card. You'll probably reach an automated system, and you might not be able to talk to a representative. Instead, contact the customer service number or the fraud department. Inform the representative who you speak to that:

  • you believe the company sent you the unsolicited card in violation of the law
  • you don't want the card
  • the company must cancel the account, and
  • it must provide you with written evidence that it did not—and will not—report the account to any credit reporting agency.

Send a Confirmation Letter

After you call, send a confirmation letter (by certified mail, return receipt requested) to the company. Keep a copy for your files, along with information about the credit card, like the account number and name on the account.

Also, consider sending a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau or the Federal Trade Commission.

Get Your Credit Reports and Review Them Carefully

Wait a few weeks, then get copies of your credit reports and check to be sure the account is not on the reports. If you find other accounts on your reports that don't belong to you, you need to file a dispute with the credit reporting agency and contact those companies immediately.

When to Talk to a Lawyer

If an identity thief has opened new accounts in your name and you need help dealing with the aftermath, consider talking to an identity theft lawyer or a consumer protection lawyer.

The Truth in Lending Act prohibits a bank from issuing credit cards except

  • in response to an oral or written request or application for the card, or
  • as a renewal of, or substitute for, an accepted credit card.

This means that, while banks may not issue new, unsolicited credit cards, they may, for example, issue replacement cards when purchasing existing accounts from another bank.

The credit terms on the new accounts do not have to be identical with the old. In such a case, you may wish to review any new terms and conditions to see if you want the new account and the new card. Generally, if the bank wants to make a significant change in the terms and conditions of a credit card, it must provide written notice at least 45 days before the effective date of the change. In most cases, the notice must include a statement that you may reject the change, as well as instructions for how to notify the bank that you reject the change. If you reject the change, the bank may choose to terminate or suspend your ability to use the account for further transactions.

Otherwise, if you receive an unsolicited card you should contact your bank promptly. Occasionally, a bank may issue a credit card in error. In such a case, you should direct the bank to close the account and remove any record of the account from your credit history.

Receiving an unsolicited card also could mean that a third party has applied for the card after stealing your identity. If you suspect identity theft, you should order a copy of your credit report. You can order one free credit report every 12 months through www.annualcreditreport.com or by calling (877) 322-8228.

How do I get my money back after I discovered an unauthorized transaction or money missing from my bank account?

Tip

Report your lost or stolen card or PIN within two business days of when you discover it is missing so you limit your losses to $50 or less, no matter how much is charged to your card.

If someone steals the security code or PIN to your debit card or bank account, you should follow the same steps as you would if someone stole your card 

You should notify your bank or credit union within two business days of discovering the loss or theft of your security code or PIN. Never write your PIN on your debit card or keep it written down in your wallet, in case your card or wallet is lost or stolen. Although the protections for unauthorized transactions still apply, you will still have to go through the process of recovering your funds.

If you didn’t lose your card or PIN

If an unauthorized transaction appears on your statement, but you did not lose your card, security code, or PIN or had any of them stolen, you should still notify your bank or credit union right away. At the latest, you must notify your bank within 60 days after your bank or credit union sends your statement showing the unauthorized transaction. If you wait longer, you could have to pay the full amount of any transactions that occurred after the 60-day period and before you notify your bank. In order to hold you responsible for those transactions, your bank would have to show that if you notified them before the end of the 60-day period, the transactions would not have occurred.

In extenuating circumstances, like lengthy travel or hospitalization that keeps you from notifying the bank within the time allowed, the notification periods above must be extended.

What does the bank have to do once I report it? Can I get my money back?

Once you notify your bank or credit union, it generally has ten business days to investigate the issue (20 business days if the account has been open less than 30 days). The bank or credit union must correct an error within one business day after determining that an error has occurred. Your bank or credit union then has three business days to report its findings to you.

If the bank or credit union can’t complete its investigation within ten (or 20) business days as applicable, it must generally issue a temporary credit to your account for the amount of the disputed transaction, minus a maximum of $50, while it continues to investigate.

In certain circumstances, however, it does not have to issue a temporary credit. For example, the bank or credit union may require you to provide written confirmation of the error if you initially provided the information by telephone. If you are asked to follow up in writing and you do not do so within ten business days, the bank or credit union is not required to temporarily credit your account during the course of its investigation.

The bank or credit union must then resolve the issue in 45 days, unless the disputed transactions were conducted in a foreign country, were conducted within 30 days of account opening, or were debit card point-of-sale purchases. In those cases, you may have to wait as long as 90 days for the issue to be fully resolved.

If the bank or credit union determines that the transactions were in fact authorized, it must provide you with written notice before taking the money that was credited to you during the investigation out of your account.

You can now use your new Bank of America debit card before it even arrives in the mail

There are few things more frustrating than being unable to access your checking account while you wait for a debit card to arrive in the mail. Bank of America is mitigating that particular headache for its customers by allowing for use of a "digital debit card" before the physical one arrives in the mail.

The change seems to boil down to giving the customer early access to the information on their yet-to-be-delivered card in the Bank of America app, and allowing it to be added to wallet apps like Google Pay. As many Bank of America ATMs allow for cash withdrawals using Google Pay, that could save users several days of hassle.

Bank Of America Preferred Rewards Program Review

Bank of America is one of the main issuers of credit cards in the United States and the eighth largest bank in the world. In addition to issuing co-branded cards like the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card*, Bank of America has a program called the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program that offers additional benefits and rewards to some Bank of America cardholders.

There are several different Bank of America credit cards that are part of the Preferred Rewards program. Paired with this program, some cards go from being hardly notable to some of the best credit cards available. If you can qualify for the Preferred Rewards program, you’ll want to take note. Here’s what you need to know about how to qualify and what kinds of benefits you can get once you do.

Bank of America Preferred Rewards Benefits

The Bank of America Preferred Rewards program has three different tiers. Each tier has a different amount of money that is required to be deposited with Bank of America to qualify, and each successive tier has additional benefits. Here’s a look at the requirements for each of the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program tiers:

  • Gold: $20,000 to $49,999 three-month average combined balance
  • Platinum: $50,000 to $99,999 three-month average combined balance
  • Platinum Honors: $100,000 or more three-month average combined balance

Once you qualify for a new tier, you are automatically moved up to the higher tier, and once you reach a tier, you keep your program benefits for 12 months, even if your balances drop.

Each tier has different benefits:

  • ATM fee reimbursements: You’ll need to use a Bank of America debit or ATM card and then you won’t be charged the non-Bank of America ATM fee and will receive a refund of the ATM operator or network fee. This applies to ATMs only in the U.S. and U.S. territories.
  • Mortgage origination fee reduction: In order to be eligible for the mortgage origination fee reduction you’ll need to schedule boa replace credit card application three or more business days after the end of the calendar month in which you satisfy the income requirements. Also, Overdraft Protection transfer fees are waived from your linked savings accounts, secondary checking accounts or from a home equity line of credit. Cards That Are Part of the Preferred Rewards Program

Certain Bank of America Credit Cards are part of the Preferred Rewards program. The 25% to 75% rewards boost that you can earn through Preferred Rewards can make these cards serious contenders for a space in your wallet depending on your spending patterns and rewards goals.

  • Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card: New cardholders can earn 50,000 online bonus points after making at least $3,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of opening an account. For rewards, the card earns 2 points per dollar on travel and dining purchases and 1.5 points per dollar on all other purchases. Cardholders will pay a $95 annual fee.

How to Maximize the Bank of America Preferred Rewards Program

Of course if you want to get the maximum benefit from the Bank Of America Preferred Rewards program, you’ll need to qualify for the Platinum Honors tier to get the 75% bonus on your spending and the most substantial rewards in other categories.

Generally, it’s not the best idea to make your savings and investment decisions based on credit card rewards, so you’ll want to compare the overall benefits of the Bank of America / Merrill programs against other options to make the right decision for you.

Another point that might hinder maximizing your Bank of America Preferred Rewards tier is that of course not everyone has a spare $100,000 lying around available to park in their account in order to qualify for the Platinum Honors tier. Still, the balances required for the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program do take into account all accounts from savings, investment and retirement. Also, the accounts do not have to be newly created at Bank of America. Rollover retirement accounts also count towards the total, so that may be another option to maximize your tier.

If you have the Bank of America Travel Rewards card and are in the Platinum Honors tier, then all of your spending gets a 2.625% (1.5 points per dollar spent with a 75% bonus) rebate towards travel purchases. That’s just about the best rate you can get for non-bonused spending towards travel. With the Bank of America Premium Rewards Card, you’re getting 3.5% back on dining and travel and 2.625% on all other purchases. With the Bank of America Cash Rewards card, you can get 5.25% on the category of your choice (gas, dining, travel, etc.) and 3.5% back on spending at groceries and wholesale club.

If you have the ability to put at least $20,000 in savings or investment accounts, then it definitely pays to be aware of the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program

How Do I Join Bank of America Preferred Rewards?

To join Bank of America Preferred Rewards, you need to have a Bank of America personal checking account and at least $20,000 combined in an eligible Bank of America or Merrill account, measured as a three-month average. There are no fees to join or be a part of the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program.

This is unlike some other similar bank programs such as Chase Ultimate Rewards or American Express Membership Rewards, which are free to join and have no minimum balance or account requirements.

Another difference between Bank of America Preferred Rewards and other bank programs is that currently your Preferred Rewards cannot be transferred to any airline or hotel programs—all of your rewards must be used within and as a part of the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program. This can make cash back rewards such as Bank of America Preferred Rewards a useful part of your miles and points balances. In addition to airline miles and hotel points, there are many parts of travel such as car rentals, excursions and other expenses that you can’t use most miles and points for.

Bottom Line

If you can meet the minimum $20,000 deposit requirement between an eligible account, joining the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program is a no-brainer. How do I get my money back after I discovered an unauthorized transaction or money missing from my bank account?

Tip

Report your lost or stolen card or PIN within two business days of when you discover it is missing so you limit your losses to $50 or less, no matter how much is charged to your card.

If someone steals the security code or PIN to your debit card or bank account, you should follow the same steps as you would if someone stole your card 

You should notify your bank or credit union within two business days of discovering the loss or theft of your security code or PIN. Never write your PIN on your debit card or keep it written down in your wallet, in case your card or wallet is lost or stolen. Although the protections for unauthorized transactions still apply, you will still have to go through the process of recovering your funds.

If you didn’t lose your card or PIN

If an unauthorized transaction appears on your statement, but you did not lose boa replace credit card card, security code, or PIN or had any of them stolen, you should still notify your bank or credit union right away. At the latest, you must notify your bank within 60 days after your bank or credit union sends your statement showing the unauthorized transaction. If you wait longer, you could have to pay the full amount of any transactions that occurred after the 60-day period and before you notify your bank. In order to hold you responsible for those transactions, your bank would have to show that if you notified them before the end of the 60-day period, the transactions would not have occurred.

What does the bank have to do once I report it? Can I get my money back?

Once you notify your bank or credit union, it generally has ten business days to investigate the issue (20 business days if the account has been open less than 30 days). The bank or credit union must correct an error within one business day after determining that an error has occurred. Your bank or credit union then has three business days to report its findings to you.

If the bank or credit union can’t complete its investigation within ten (or 20) business days as applicable, it must generally issue a temporary credit to your account for the amount of the disputed transaction, minus a maximum of $50, while it continues to investigate.

In certain circumstances, however, it does not have to issue a temporary credit. For example, the bank or credit union may require you to provide written confirmation of the error if you initially provided the information by telephone. If you are asked to follow up in writing and you do not do so within ten business days, the bank or credit union is not required to temporarily credit your account during the course of its investigation.

The bank or credit union must then resolve the issue in 45 days, unless the disputed transactions were conducted in a foreign country, were conducted within 30 days of account opening, or were debit card point-of-sale purchases. In those cases, you may have to wait as long as 90 days for the issue to be fully resolved.

If the bank or credit union determines that the transactions were in fact authorized, it must provide you with written notice before taking the money that was credited to you during the investigation out of your account.

Credit cards that offer a pause button — and when to use it

When you’ve misplaced your favorite credit card, what do you do? Everyone who uses credit cards has likely had this happen at least once. You could retrace your steps with the hope of finding the missing card at the last restaurant you ate at, or perhaps in the pocket of the pants you wore yesterday.

The safe bet, though, is to contact the card issuer and report it missing. However, this will permanently invalidate the lost card, and you’ll have to wait until you receive a replacement. This can be troublesome, especially if you have high hopes that the card will turn up in a few days.

Fortunately though, there is a better option. Many major credit card issuers allow you to temporarily disable a particular card, and reactivate it later. As you’ll see, it has lots of potential uses, even beyond a misplaced card.

Major card issuers that offer a pause button

Here’s a look at which issuers offer this option.

American Express Freeze Your Card

American Express’s Free Your Card option prevents your card from being used for new purchases, but allows payment of recurring bills on the account. You can also continue to use for digital wallet transactions, like Apple Pay or Samsung Pay. However, your card will automatically be unfrozen in seven days. Both primary and authorized card holders can use this feature. Amex also makes it extremely easy to freeze and unfreeze your angel victoria secret card payment right in the Amex app.

Bank of America Lock/Unlock

Although Bank of America makes it incredibly easy to lock and unlock your card, this feature is only available to Bank of America debit card holders.

Barclays SecurHold™

Barclays allows you to instantly lock and unlock your card from its mobile app. And to go one step further, they offer a Control Your Card feature, which allows you to set transaction limits and even block certain purchases for yourself or authorized users. This is a great feature since Barclays is one of the few card issuers that gives authorized users unique card numbers. The Barclays app can also notify you of each transaction in real time, which can be great for monitoring spending and catching fraudulent purchases as soon as they happen.

Capital One Card Lock

Capital One’s Card Lock feature allows you to easily lock and unlock your card straight from the mobile app.  It blocks all in-store, online, in-app and phone purchases for cards. However, you can continue to return items, make payments and redeem rewards while your card is locked.

Chase Lock and Unlock

This feature allows Chase card holders to lock and unlock their credit card from the Chase Mobile app or on their computer. Locking the card doesn’t affect automatic payments, so there are no disruptions to recurring charges. You also can still use your digit wallet to make purchases. However, when you lock your card, it will lock any other cards that share the same account number.

Citi Quick Lock

Citi allows card holders to lock and unlock their credit card online or from its mobile app. Even when your card is locked, recurring transactions will still hit your credit card without any disruption.

Discover Freeze it®

Discover was one of the first card issuers to offer a card freeze feature, which can be activated online or through its mobile app. Even though Discover will not authorize new purchases, cash advances or balance transfers while your account is on hold, recurring payments, returns, dispute adjustments and delayed authorized will still post to your account.

US Bank Lock and Unlock

A relatively new feature to US Bank is that they now offer the capability to lock and unlock your card. The easiest way to do this with US Bank is from their mobile app.

Wells Fargo Control Tower

Wells Fargo Control Tower allows you to turn your cards on and off, as well as restrict international use. It will also allow you to view digital wallets and turn digital card numbers stored in your devices on or off. Recurring payments may still be approved or processed even if you turn your card off.

When to use your credit card’s pause button

Aside from misplacing your credit card, there are many other situations where a pause button can come in handy.

To control spending: Credit cards are so convenient to use that some people overspend. By pressing pause on your credit card it could help you control any impulse purchases. This extra step might also make you think twice on whether or not you actually need to make that particular purchase.

Put your cards in safe mode: If you have cards that you don’t use often, or you only use for recurring monthly payments, then you might want to pause them to prevent unauthorized use. This is an extra measure of security for those cards, especially if you don’t look at these accounts often enough to pick up on fraudulent charges.

Controlling the use of authorized card holders: Pressing pause can be a good way to prevent an authorized card holder from using his or her card. Just keep in mind that not all card issuers will freeze authorized cards holders when you freeze the primary card members’ account.

Bottom line

It’s great that most major card issuers now offer the option of temporarily pausing your credit card. Best of all, this feature is completely free and typically there is no what jewish holiday was yesterday on the number of times you lock or unlock your account.
