Sun exposure can wreak havoc on your skin, both temporarily and long-term. And depending on the amount of exposure, reversing sun damage caused by ultraviolet light can require several trips to the dermatologist and daily use of special skin care products, which can add up to a hefty price tag. Plus, too much fun in the sun sans sunscreen increases your risk of squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma—a deadly form ofskin cancer.

In most situations, applying a thick layer of sunscreen before heading outdoors, and then again every couple of hours after, will prevent the dreaded lobster look and protect your skin from harmful UV rays. However, it’s easy to forget to reapply or miss a hard-to-reach spot. Then, before you know it, the damage is done. 

The good news? There are plenty of home remedies for sunburns like aloe vera, cold compresses, and over-the-counter or prescription medications. They can provide immediate relief, soothe irritated skin, and kickstart the healing process.

Excess exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays or other UV light sources can cause aninflammatory reaction to the skin’s outermost layers, resulting in red, irritated skin. Therefore, the most important thing to do when treating a sunburn is to act quickly. If you’re outside, move indoors as soon as possible. Or, find shelter in a shaded area, cover your skin with lightweight clothing, and put on a hat. Once inside, consider trying one or more of the following home remedies.

1. Aloe vera

Aloe vera can help to heal sunburns and mild burns—while hydrating skin to prevent peeling. “Its high water content and presence of sugar molecules allow for skin protection and hydration,” says Melanie Palm, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Art of Skin. Aloe vera also contains aloin which is helpful as an anti-inflammatory, according to Dr. Palm. Try it straight from the plant, or in the form of aloe vera gel or lotion from your local pharmacy. If you’re using aloe vera to treat a sunburn, apply it to affected areas three to four times daily.

2. Cold compress

Applying a cold compress to sunburned skin for 10 minutes several times a day, can help soothe irritation. To make a cold compress, soak a clean washcloth in cool water, then hold it on the affected area. Additionally, you can buy a reusable cold compress and store it in the freezer for quick cooling—but do not apply ice directly to sunburned skin. Wrap in a washcloth first.

3. Soothing moisturizers 

Moderate to severe sunburns often result in red, irritated, dry skin. Meaning, after a sunburn you need to moisturize with emollients like shea butter, cocoa butter, or petroleum jelly to reduce irritation and prevent peeling skin. To help prevent further skin irritation, Dr. Palm recommends slathering on a layer of Vaseline or Aquaphor, which can help speed up the healing process. 

4. Topical antioxidant cream

When it comes to easing skin irritation and redness,Kenneth Mark, MD, a cosmetic dermatology expert, recommends a topical treatment that contains skin-calming antioxidants like vitamin E, and vitamin C. More research is needed, but some animal studies show that topical antioxidants can help repair skin cells after a burn. Apply the cream or serum following the guidelines provided on the product packaging.

5. Cold shower

After a day in the sun, standing under cool or cold water is a simple yet effective way to treat a sunburn. Frequent, cool showers can reduce the sting and help relieve pain associated with a sunburn, according to theAmerican Academy of Dermatology (AAD). A cool bath will also work well. Apply your moisturizer after the bath or shower to help lock in moisture.

6. Oatmeal

You can find oatmeal as the main ingredient in several skin care products, from lotions and soaps to masks and scrubs. According toresearch, colloidal oatmeal has anti-oxidant properties that may improve dryness and reduce itch intensity for a variety of skin conditions, including burns. Take an oatmeal bath by adding 1 cup of finely ground oats to cool or lukewarm bath water. Mix the oats in the water using your hand and soak the affected area for at least 15 minutes. 

7. Green tea

Sure, green tea tastes wonderful when you drink it. But, the polyphenols it contains can also help to soothe sunburned skin when it’s applied to skin. Steep a few green tea bags in warm water, then add the tea to a bath. Dr. Palm says you can also make a compress with a washcloth and cold tea to help repair skin.

8. Baking soda

A baking soda bath might not sound like the most relaxing experience, but this home remedy can helpcool the skin and reduce redness. Add 2 ounces of baking soda to cool or lukewarm bath water. Soak in the tub for at least 15 minutes. Pat dry and apply a layer of lotion or moisturizer. 

9. Essential oils

Essential oils, such aslavender, may help take the sting out of a sunburn. The research on their effectiveness is limited, but moisturizing carrier oils, such as jojoba oil or coconut oil, can help to hydrate skin. Just make sure that the oil is intended for topical application before slathering it on.

10. Plain yogurt 

Plain yogurt contains probiotics and healthy enzymes that may protect you from a sunburn when eaten regularly. A study from the National Institutes of Health found that Lactobacillus johnsonii (La1) along with nutritional doses of carotenoids helped to reduce early skin damage caused by UV light.. If the damage is already done, some dermatologists say it can also provide relief for mild sunburns when applied to skin. Dr. Palm recommends mixing yogurt with chopped cucumbers. The yogurt has a cooling effect, and the cucumbers help with hydration. Then, rinse the treatment off with lukewarm water.

11. Water

Several sunburn treatment protocols call for external remedies, but it’s also important to focus on drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Sunburns can cause your body to draw fluid to the surface of the skin and away from the rest of your body, increasing your risk of dehydration, according to the AAD.

12. Loose clothing 

To help reduce skin irritation and discomfort while your sunburn is healing, Dr. Palm recommends wearing light, loose-fitting clothing that won’t rub against skin. When choosing an outfit to prevent a future sunburn, the AAD says tightly-woven fabrics work best. 

13. Honey

Honey is known for its antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. For mild sunburns, apply a small amount of medicine-grade honey to the affected area to helpmanage the wound. It may also aid with thegrowth of new skin cells. 

Sunburn relief medications

If you need more relief than a home remedy can provide, it might be time to try an over-the-counter drug or prescription medication for sunburn treatment. These are three common treatments for sunburn. 

1. Ibuprofen

“The most important thing you can do for a sunburn is to take ibuprofen within the first 24 hours,” says Dr. Mark. Ibuprofen pain relievers, including Motrin or Advil, are known for their anti-inflammatory effects, which help support the healing process. They also help take the sting out of a sunburn, which is critical in the first 24 to 48 hours. Follow the directions on the label for dosage and timing.

2. Hydrocortisone cream 

Some sunburns cause minimal discomfort, while others can make life pretty miserable. If you have an area that is especially uncomfortable, consider using an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream. According to the AAD, this is a much better solution than using pain relief creams like benzocaine and lidocaine since they can irritate the skin, or in some cases, lead to an allergic reaction.

3. Prescription topical steroid

If your skin is blistering and so painful that you cannot get relief or it is so red that the home remedies are not helping, Dr. Mark says you could benefit from a topical prescription steroid, such as betamethasone.

The best way to treat a sunburn is to prevent it by applying sunscreen to all exposed skin before any sun exposure and reapplying at least every two hours while outdoors. When choosing a sunscreen lotion, make sure to look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.

When to see a doctor for a bad sunburn 

Most mild to moderate sunburns are treatable with home remedies. However, there areinstances when seeing a healthcare provider is warranted. Seek medical attention if you’re experiencing any of the followingsymptoms:

  • Burn with blisters covering more than 20% of your body
  • Dehydration
  • Very painful or severe sunburn that covers more than 15% of your body 
  • High fever, typically over 101 degrees Fahrenheit 
  • Chills or nausea 
  • Skin that is swollen or oozing pus
  • Blisters that turn yellow or red over time

It’s also a good idea to see a physician if you’re taking certainprescription medications that can increase your sensitivity to the sun. These include antibiotics, antifungals, antihistamines, cholesterol-lowering drugs, diuretics, oral contraceptives, retinoids, phenothiazines, and more. 

For very severe sunburns, Dr. Palm says treatment in a burn unit in a hospital may be necessary in order to administer topical steroids and wound care, red light treatment, or potentially fluid resuscitation.

There are two ways you can use it to treat sunburns: as a paste or in your tub. For the paste, grind 1/2 cup of oats in a food processor into a fine powder. Add the powder to 1/4 cup of milk and a few tablespoons of honey. Combine and apply to your skin for 20 minutes. For the tub, pour a cup of ground-up oats in a warm bath. And then, soak your full body for 20 minutes.

6. Black, Grey, and Green Teas
Full of tannic acid, these herbs are usually used to soothe sore throats, but they can also ease sunburn pain, too. Brew 5 to 7 bags of tea in a pot of water. Once it cools down, soak a towel in the tea and apply it on the burn for up to 30 minutes. If you're suffering from a face burn, you can apply the used tea bags on your eyes and face for instant relief.

7. Coconut Oil
We're all aware of its moisturizing properties, but it's also known to reduce inflammation. Wait one day after your burn to set and use plain, natural coconut oil and rub it over the burned areas. Even better: You can apply some (along with your sunscreen) before you head outdoors for extra protection.

8. Tomatoes
You can apply slices of tomato to your skin to soothe a bad burn, but it's even better to down a few (hello, fresh salad!) before stepping into the sun. Studies have shown that eating tomatoes helps protect you against ultraviolet light — a.k.a. the sun's rays.

9. Cucumbers
They aren't a spa staple just because they taste good: Cooling cucumbers help relieve discomfort and inflammation, too. Rub chilled slices along your burn. And once they heat up, flip it over and use the cooler side instead.

10. Sour Cream, Skim Milk, or Yogurt
The fat, protein, and pH in dairy products have a soothing effect on skin. And the colder they are, the better they help restrict blood vessels and reduces swelling.

Another treatment includes soaking clean towels or gauze in equal parts skim milk, water, and ice cubes, and applying the cloth to burned skin for five minutes. Repeat this three times. Or, rub unsweetened, plain, and full-fat yogurt or sour cream on your skin. Just make sure to rinse after 20 minutes — nothing's worse than a sunburn paired with spoiled dairy.

Bonus tip: Always drink plenty of H2O after you get a sunburn. It helps rehydrate the skin and fight off inflammation and peeling. And, of course, always wear sunscreen and you won't have to worry about these remedies!

Sunburn: what you need to know

Sunburn must be cooled down, using damp cloths, for instance. You should steer clear of ice, cold packs or household products such as quark. These can prolong the healing process. You can apply after-sun products afterwards. If you don’t have any of these products to hand, you can also use normal moisturiser. However, it doesn’t absorb as quickly and has no cooling effect. However, there are other household remedies that soothe sunburned skin:

Aloe vera

Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory, cooling and moisturising properties. The gel also alleviates itching and helps with regeneration. In addition to aloe vera creams from the pharmacy, the gel from the plant can be used directly. Cut a leaf from the plant. Let the liquid drain briefly, then wrap the leaf in cling film and refrigerate it for 30 minutes. Cut off a large piece of the cooled leaf and slice it open lengthwise. This will allow you to scrape out the gel and apply it directly to the sunburn.

Cucumber

Cucumber has a cooling and moisturising effect and can be used to soothe stressed skin. Cut a few cucumber slices and place them directly on the sunburn. The effect is enhanced with refrigerated cucumber. Cucumber can also be mixed with quark or yoghurt and applied as a poultice. Let the skin absorb the mixture for ten minutes, then wipe the rest away.

Black tea and chamomile flowers

Steep a black teabag for a few minutes, then put it in the refrigerator to cool. For small burns, you can place the cooled teabag directly on the damaged skin. Alternatively, you can prepare a decoction of chamomile flowers. Add five tablespoons of chamomile flowers to half a litre of boiling water. Steep the decoction for around ten minutes, then allow it to cool and soak some cloths in the mixture. You can apply these directly to the sunburn. Both methods soothe the skin, promote wound healing and prevent inflammation.

Oak bark

The tannins from oak bark help calm and protect the skin, and also alleviate itching. Bring two tablespoons of oak bark to the boil in 250 ml water. Remove the oak bark pieces with a sieve and refrigerate the liquid. Fill a spray bottle with the cool liquid and spray the sunburn regularly.

St John’s wort oil

After a cooling effect is achieved with the remedies already mentioned, St John’s wort oil can alleviate pain and help the skin regenerate. The oil also has antibacterial properties and serves to eliminate toxins more quickly. You can apply a thin layer of St John’s wort oil directly to the sunburn, or use strips of gauze that have been soaked in the oil.

Please note: St John’s wort oil increases photosensitivity. Avoid the sun after applying it.

How to Treat Sunburn in Kids

Even when parents do their best to protect their kids from too much sun, many children will still end up with a sunburn at some point. So, it's important to know how to identify a sunburn, what to do about it, when to call a doctor, and how to prevent future sunburns in kids.

Like other burns, sunburns can cause first-degree burns, which are the most common type, but more severe sunburns can lead to second-degree burns, and more rarely, third-degree burns.

Parents should be aware that both UVB and UVA rays can damage their kids' skin. While UVB rays typically burn the skin, UVA rays may be more important in aging the skin. The radiation from UVA rays is more constant and penetrates deeper into the skin (the dermis). Both UVA and UVB cause DNA damage in the skin; the damage which can lead to skin cancer.

Even if your child has only a mild burn or has no visible burn at all, skin damage may still occur.

Kids' Sunburn Symptoms

While your child can get a sunburn in as little as 15 to 30 minutes of being in the sun without adequate protection, the symptoms of a sunburn typically don't develop until one to 24 hours later. Symptoms can include pain, red skin that may have blisters, and sometimes fever.

Even though sunburns are more common in children with lighter skin, black children and other children of color can still get sunburned as well. Regardless of skin color, sunburned skin can be sensitive to the touch, feel hot, painful, irritated, or itchy.

Because it may be harder to detect the redness of a sunburn in kids with darker skin, it is important for parents to watch for signs of heat stroke from sun exposure including headaches, dizziness, nausea, swollen skin, fever, or muscle cramps.

Most kids recover from their sunburns over the course of two to seven days, depending on how bad it was, to begin with, and with the first few days being the worst. After four to seven days, your child's sunburned skin will usually peel.

Sunburn Complications

Depending on the severity of your child's sunburn, they may be at risk for complications. Each can lead to significant health impacts if not addressed, so it is important to pay close attention if any of the following complications present with your child's sunburn.

Blisters

More severe sunburns that cause second-degree burns can have blisters that develop on the skin. These small, fluid-filled sacs will typically burst within a few days from forming and then heal completely within two weeks. Do not pop the blisters intentionally, as this can lead to infection. Keep blistered areas clean and dry as possible, coving with loose gauze.

Sun Poisoning

Sun poisoning is a non-medical term for severe sunburn. This type of sunburn may include red, painful skin with swelling and blisters. A child with sun poisoning may also have other symptoms, such as fever, chills, or nausea.

Sun poisoning is also sometimes used to describe the rash that certain people get because they have a sensitivity to the sun. The medical term for this type of sun exposure rash is polymorphous light eruption, which can present as small, red dots on the skin, eczema-like patches, or target-shaped lesions one to two days after sun exposure.

Less commonly, a condition known as solar urticaria may occur in sunburned children in which both redness and hives are present, but typically resolves within several hours post-sun exposure.

Heat Stress

Heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion (the precursor to the more serious heat stroke) can happen to children during sun exposure regardless of whether or not their skin appears to be sunburned. When an increase in core body temperature due to sun exposure is combined with a lack of hydration, heat exhaustion can occur.

A child with a red face during sun exposure may not actually have a sunburn yet, but they could be experiencing a form of heat stress that can cause health complications if not treated. If your child experiences weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or headache, with pale, warn, and moist skin, it's important to remove them from the heat and seek medical attention.

When to Call the Doctor

Call your doctor if your child has a severe sunburn, with blisters or fever, and/or if the sunburn covers a large area of his body. Increased redness, yellow discharge from blisters, and skin swelling can be signs of infection that may require medical attention.

Additionally, seek medical treatment if your child is particularly lethargic, begins vomiting, or experiences severe dizziness.

Treating a Child's Sunburn

There are many things you can do to ease the discomfort of your child's sunburn, but there is nothing you can do to reverse the damage to DNA and structures in the skin which occurs with a sunburn. The goals of most sunburn treatments are to make your child comfortable and ease the pain, especially in the first few days when the sunburn is usually the most painful.

When you first notice a child's sunburn, immediately remove them from the sun if you haven't already. Then, offer pain reducers, such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen) and apply a cool, wet compress over the affected area. Make sure that your child is given extra fluids so that they don't get dehydrated.

Cool baths and showers can help to relieve the heat and pain associated with sunburns, as can applying soothing lotions that contain aloe vera. An oral antihistamine and topical moisturizers can be used once the sunburned areas begin to peel and become itchy.

For severe sunburns, prescription-strength pain medicine and prescription burn cream like Silvadene may be necessary to reduce significant pain. Additionally, corticosteroids are used rarely and only with severe sunburns.

Sunburn Relief Don'ts

While your child is recovering from a sunburn, avoid things that may aggravate his sunburned skin, such as hot baths or showers and lotions that contain benzocaine. Be extra careful to not expose them to the sun. In addition to being painful, the sunburned areas are likely even more susceptible to getting harmed by the sun.

Treatments for sunburn do not heal the burn. There are no treatments which address the damage that has been done. The goal of "treatment" is to ease discomfort while the body repairs itself.

Certain medications, including most medications that are used to treat acne, can also increase your child's risk of severe sunburns.

Every sunburn your child gets can put them at increased risk for skin cancer later in life. Following these sun safety tips can help prevent sunburns :

  • Apply sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside over all exposed areas of the body.
  • Avoid sun exposure during peak times from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when UV rays are the strongest.
  • Routinely use a broad spectrum sunscreen or sunblock with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Wear protective clothing including sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats, and loose, long-sleeved shirts and pants with a tight weave.

Babies are also susceptible to sunburns. Although it is best to keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight and use protective clothing and hats to help reduce exposure, you can also apply a small amount of sunscreen to exposed skin when necessary.

If you’ve spent any time in the sun without a layer of sunscreen protecting your skin or stayed outdoors a little too long, there’s a good chance you’ve experienced a painful sunburn. 

Sun exposure can wreak havoc on your skin, both temporarily and long-term. And depending on the amount of exposure, reversing sun damage caused by ultraviolet light can require several trips to the dermatologist and daily use of special skin care products, which can add up to a hefty price tag. Plus, too much fun in the sun sans sunscreen increases your risk of squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma—a deadly form ofskin cancer.

In most situations, applying a thick layer of sunscreen before heading outdoors, and then again every couple of hours after, will prevent the dreaded lobster look and protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Aloe vera also contains aloin which is helpful as an anti-inflammatory, according to Dr. Palm. Try it straight from the plant, or in the form of aloe vera gel or lotion from your local pharmacy. If you’re using aloe vera to treat a sunburn, apply it to affected areas three to four times daily.

2. Cold compress

Applying a cold compress to sunburned skin for 10 minutes several times a day, can help soothe irritation. To make a cold are banana skins good for you, soak a clean washcloth in cool water, then hold it on the affected area. Additionally, you can buy a reusable cold compress and store it in the freezer for quick cooling—but do not apply ice directly to sunburned skin. Wrap in a washcloth first.

When it comes to easing skin irritation and redness,Kenneth Mark, MD, a cosmetic dermatology expert, recommends a topical treatment that contains skin-calming antioxidants like vitamin E, and vitamin C. More research is needed, but some animal studies show that topical antioxidants can help repair skin cells after a burn. Apply the cream or serum following the guidelines provided on the product packaging.

5. Cold shower

After a day in the sun, standing under cool or cold water is a simple yet effective way to treat a sunburn. Frequent, cool showers can reduce the sting and help relieve pain associated with a sunburn, according to theAmerican Academy of Dermatology (AAD). A cool bath will also work well. Apply your moisturizer after the bath or shower to help lock in moisture.

6. Oatmeal

You can find oatmeal as the main ingredient in several skin care products, from lotions and soaps to masks and scrubs. According toresearch, colloidal oatmeal has anti-oxidant properties that may improve dryness and reduce itch intensity for a variety of skin conditions, including burns. Take an oatmeal bath by adding 1 cup of finely ground oats to cool or lukewarm bath water. Mix the oats in the water using your hand and soak the affected area for at least 15 minutes. 

7. Green tea

Sure, green tea tastes wonderful when you drink it. But, the polyphenols it contains can also help to soothe sunburned skin when it’s applied to skin. Steep a few green tea bags in warm water, then add the tea to a bath. Dr. Palm says you can also make a compress with a washcloth and cold tea to help repair skin.

8. Baking soda

A baking soda bath might not sound like the most relaxing experience, but this home remedy can helpcool the skin and reduce redness. Add 2 ounces of baking soda to cool or lukewarm bath water. Soak in the tub for at least 15 minutes. Pat dry and apply a layer of lotion or moisturizer. 

9. Essential oils

Essential oils, such aslavender, may help take the sting out of a sunburn. The research on their effectiveness is limited, but moisturizing carrier oils, such as jojoba oil or coconut oil, can help to hydrate skin. Just make sure that the oil is intended for topical application before slathering it on.

10. Plain yogurt 

Plain yogurt contains probiotics and healthy enzymes that may protect you from a sunburn when eaten regularly. A study from the National Institutes of Health found that Lactobacillus johnsonii (La1) along with nutritional doses of carotenoids helped to reduce early skin damage caused by UV light. If the damage is already done, some dermatologists say it can also provide relief for mild sunburns when applied to skin. Dr. Palm recommends mixing yogurt with chopped cucumbers. The yogurt has a cooling effect, and the cucumbers help with hydration. Then, rinse the treatment off with lukewarm water.

11. Water

Several sunburn treatment protocols call for external remedies, but it’s also important to focus on drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Sunburns can cause your body to draw fluid to the surface of the skin and away from the rest of your body, increasing your risk of dehydration, according to the AAD.

To help reduce skin irritation and discomfort while your sunburn is healing, Dr. Palm recommends wearing light, loose-fitting clothing that won’t rub against skin. When choosing an outfit to prevent a future sunburn, the AAD says tightly-woven fabrics work best.

Honey is known for its antibacterial, antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. For mild sunburns, apply a small amount of medicine-grade honey to the affected area to helpmanage the wound. It may also aid with thegrowth of new skin cells.

If you need more relief than a home remedy can provide, it might be time to try an over-the-counter drug or prescription medication for sunburn treatment. These are three common treatments for sunburn. 

1. Ibuprofen

“The most important thing you can do for a sunburn is to take ibuprofen within the first 24 hours,” says Dr. Mark. Ibuprofen pain relievers, including Motrin or Advil, are known for their anti-inflammatory effects, which help support the healing process. They also help take the sting out of a sunburn, which is critical in the first 24 to 48 hours. Follow the directions on the label for dosage and timing.

2. Hydrocortisone cream 

Some sunburns cause minimal discomfort, while others can make life pretty miserable. If you have an area that is especially uncomfortable, consider using an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream. According to the AAD, this is a much better solution than using pain relief creams like benzocaine and lidocaine since they can irritate the skin, or in some cases, lead to an allergic reaction.

3. Prescription topical steroid

If your skin is blistering and so painful that you cannot get relief or it is so red that the home remedies are not helping, Dr. Mark says you could benefit from a topical prescription steroid, such as betamethasone.

When to see a doctor for a bad sunburn 

Most mild to moderate sunburns are treatable with home remedies. However, there areinstances when seeing a healthcare provider is warranted. Seek medical attention if you’re experiencing any of the followingsymptoms:

  • Burn with blisters covering more than 20% of your body
  • Dehydration
  • Very painful or severe sunburn that covers more than 15% of your body 
  • High fever, typically over 101 degrees Fahrenheit 
  • Chills or nausea 
  • Skin that is swollen or oozing pus
  • Blisters that turn yellow or red over time

If you’ve ever stepped into the shower after a day at the beach only to feel the familiar sting of a sunburn, you’re familiar with the panic to find something that will bring it to a screeching halt. After all, sunburns are painful (and the peeling—ugh) and you’ll pile on anything that takes the sting away, right? But have you heard the one about apple cider vinegar for sunburn relief?

If you heard ACV and sighed—noted. It’s been on the wellness trends radar for quite some time now, either earning a spot as a total cure-all or written off as complete BS. Proponents of ACV claim it's a health elixir that can help with everything from kicking the common cold (bubble burster: it won’t) to bloating and weight loss (again, not home remedy for sunburn around eyes much).

But what about apple cider vinegar’s alleged skin benefits, especially when it comes to sunburns? It’s proven a solid toner for oily skin and can even help reduce the appearance of bruises, so ACV as an antidote to a fresh sunburn *might* make sense. “The logic behind it is that the acid serves as an antiseptic (to help prevent bacteria) and an anti-inflammatory agent,” says Ranella Hirsch, MD, a Boston-based dermatologist.

So can it be true that apple cider vinegar can soothe a sunburn? Here’s what you need to know.

What happens to your skin when you get a sunburn anyway?

Before we get into the details about ACV, let's break down the science behind your burn. Namely, what happens when your skin gets fried?

“The sun is toxic to the skin,” says Mona Gohara, MD, a dermatologist in Connecticut. “[A sunburn] actually kills healthy epidermal the farmers bank appomattox

Dr. Gohara points out that, fittingly so, those cells are called “sunburned cells” when viewed under a microscope and lead to the characteristic redness, pain, swelling, and blistering that can accompany a sunburn.

But even though those characteristics all sound like a straight-up burn you might get from touching something hot, a sunburn is not technically a burn. That redness you see is caused by ultraviolet radiation (UV rays), which is why you can get a sunburn even when it’s cold out.

So.is apple cider vinegar for sunburn relief a real thing?

Remember what Dr. Hirsch said earlier? There's a reason why apple cider vinegar might seem like it would work. “ACV has become increasingly popular to treat sunburns due to its antibacterial, cooling effect,” says Melissa Kanchanapoomi Levin, MD, a dermatologist in New York and founder of Entière Dermatology.

Many ACV fans also say the ingredient helps with skin issues (i.e. helping with oily skin) when you apply it directly, or when it's an ingredient in a skin-care product. “Apple cider vinegar is reported to be useful for a variety of skin conditions because it helps calm inflammation and has antiseptic properties," says Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. "It has an acidic pH, which is why it is used as a natural skin toner."

What’s more, ACV is high in pectin (a type of soluble fiber found in apples), which can potentially improve the skin barrier and lower inflammation, Dr. Levin adds.

But here's the bummer news: Sunburn-induced puffiness isn’t so ACV-friendly. Apple cider vinegar is rich in malic acid, a hydroxy acid that’s lovely if you want to exfoliate. But, as you can imagine, this ingredient won't be so great for a top layer of already-damaged, sunburned skin, explains Dr. Zeichner. “Apple cider vinegar may be useful in treating conditions like dandruff, however I do not recommend it for sunburns,” he says. Pour it on toasty red skin and you'll likely just make the burn worse, causing seriously irritated skin or even chemical burns, adds Dr. Levin.

And before you think about just diluting ACV with water first and then soaking your tender burn, pause! While super watered-down ACV (read: 1 tablespoon in 1 cup of water) or a pour in your bath might come with some soothing benefits, these derms generally still recommend skipping it for a sunburn altogether as to not even risk the possibility of causing additional irritation.

Is there *anything* you can do to get rid of a sunburn super-fast?

Not really, Dr. Hirsch says (sorry!). The best you can do is wait it out, and apply the advice in the next section.

The cool part? Your body knows what to do, she says. “When you have a sunburn, immune cells head there—via dilated blood vessels and blood,” Dr. Hirsch explains. “That’s the redness and inflammation we know as a sunburn. While it heals, the regenerating skin under dead skin acts as a biological wound dressing to promote healing.”

And this brings Dr. Hirsch to her most important point: “Do not peel or pick for any reason” because it will only prevent healing.

Ugh, fine. What’s the best way to deal with my sunburn until it heals?

If you're in pain and uncomfortable, Dr. Levin suggests cooling off your skin with a cold, damp cloth or compress plus a cold shower. Dr. Zeichner also notes, “Make sure to use gentle skin cleansers to remove any remaining sunscreen on the skin.” You'll also want to avoid any harsh soaps as well as your loofah so you don't aggravate your already-sensitive skin. Stay out of the sun, too, and drink lots of water.

If you're puffy and your skin is sore to the touch, hit up your local drugstore for an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream to calm down inflammation. Also, use a light and breathable moisturizer (read: no oils or lotions with ingredients like petrolatum, benzocaine, or lidocaine, which can trap heat or irritate your skin, says Dr. Levin). Look for products with aloe vera, which can help re-hydrate and soothe the skin.

Reallyfeelin’ the burn? Take some ibuprofen (i.e. Advil or Motrin) or naproxen (like Aleve) to zap pain, swelling, and redness, Dr. Levin suggests. And remember: If your burn is severely blistering, takes up a large part of your body, or comes with other symptoms like a fever or chills, see your doctor right away, says Dr. Levin.

What are eyelids made of?

Your eyelids are there to protect your eyes and to keep the surface of the eye (particularly the cornea, which is the clear part of the eye over the iris and pupil) from drying out.

Each eyelid consists of thin skin (with some pads of fatty tissue), muscle and a lid-shaped piece of thick fibrous material called the tarsal plate. These tarsal plates contain Meibomian glands which produce oily material which helps keep the eye and eyelid lubricated. The inside of each eyelid is lined by an inner layer of conjunctiva, a smooth translucent membrane which covers the inner surface of the eyelids and the outer surface of the white of the eye. Conjunctivitis is inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, which is the smooth, shiny, translucent membrane that covers the white of the eye (sclera) and the underside of the eyelids.
