How to Track iPhone Without iCloud

Losing your iPhone can be a nightmare, especially if you haven't recently backed up your personal data, photos or contact list. Tracking and finding your missing iPhone is possible, it but may require access to an iCloud account to locate your phone if you don't have a third-party tracking app already installed. However, there are some workarounds. The first step to finding your iPhone is determining whether you lost your iPhone while out and about or it is somewhere nearby.

Use Find My iPhone

Apple's Find My iPhone app is usually the go-to option when trying to track an iPhone. It tracks your phone's location via GPS from another internet-connected device. If you have the Find My iPhone app installed on multiple devices, say the iPhone and iPad, you do not need to log in to your iCloud account to track it. However, if you have to locate your lost device from a friend or co-worker's device, you need to log in to your iCloud account using your Apple ID and password.

Once you log in, you can see your lost device on a map as its movements are tracked in real time via your phone's built-in GPS. For example, if you forgot your phone on a bus or in a ride-share, you can see the phone continue to move along the vehicle's route until it reaches its destination. If your iPhone is online, it is marked by a green dot, and if it is offline, it is marked by a gray dot where it was last located.

Use Your Google Maps History

If you have a Google account and have enabled your location history to be saved by Google Maps, you can log in to your account on another internet connected device and search through your location history. For best results, narrow the time frame to the exact time between when you last remember having your phone and now. You should see the last ping – the last time your cellphone communicated with a cellular tower – to narrow down your phone's whereabouts. This helps discover the location of an active phone, but if your phone is turned off or put into airplane phone, it does not continue to ping.

Use Your Dropbox Camera Upload

If your iPhone is stolen and the thief has disabled the Find My iPhone app and put the phone on airplane mode before you can track it, you might be able to find your phone using the Dropbox app if you have it installed. Dropbox won't give you the GPS location of your phone, but it can help you identify who stole the phone. If the thief takes any photos with your phone, Dropbox uploads the images simultaneously to your Dropbox account. It is possible to extract faces, places or landmarks from these images to direct authorities to the person who stole your phone.

Use a Third-Party App

Many third-party programs and apps exist to help you recover a lost or stolen iPhone by logging in to remotely locate your phone. All are reasonably priced and available via the App Store for iPhones. IHound and GPS Tracker are two easy-to-use apps that don’t use iCloud. Unless someone knows the app is there, chances are they won’t know to disable it.

Tracking a Nearby iPhone

When trying to track a missing iPhone somewhere nearby, such as in a house or single location, using Apple's built-in Find My iPhone app or other GPS-oriented find my iphone location apps is not always a useful option, particularly if you don't have access to your iCloud account.

Instead, there are a few methods to track down your iPhone in close quarters – as long as you have taken the proper pre-emptive measures.

Use Siri's Voice Activation Feature

As long as you have an iPhone that's newer than the iPhone 6s, you can use the Hey Siri feature. Keep in mind, you have to set it up manually ahead of time. This feature allows you to activate your iPhone with the voice-activated command Hey Siri, followed by a loud activation tone. Regardless of your iPhone's current volume level, you should be able to hear this tone if you are near your iPhone.

After the activation tone, continue to talk to Siri. If she doesn't hear you correctly, she will find my iphone location you to ask again, which should allow you to follow the sound of her voice to track down your iPhone.

Use Your Apple Watch

If you own an Apple Watch, you don't need to have access to iCloud to track your iPhone. If you lose your iPhone in close proximity to you, these two devices should still be connected over Wi-Fi or through Bluetooth.

To track your iPhone, go to your Apple Watch's home screen. Swipe up to reveal the Control Center, where you should see an indicator that your iPhone is connected in green text or by green phone icon. To find it, tap the Pinging iPhone icon. The phone will respond with a sound you can follow to locate it.

Use Your iPhone's LED Alerts

If you want a visual aid to help you find your iPhone, turn on your iPhone's rear LED flash to correspond when you receive new notifications. To set this feature, go to the Accessibility section of your iPhone's settings and select the option for LED Flash for Alerts. There is an additional setting called Flash on Silent, which you need to turn on. Now, even if your phone is on silent when it's missing, you should see the LED flash when you try to track it down with a text or call.

Use a Friend's Find My Friends App

This method requires someone close to you to help, but it can be useful in a pinch. If you and a close associate or family member use the Find My Friends app to share each other's location, you can go to their Find My Friends app to locate your phone's current location.
