TCC-NW Meeting Location 2018 – 2019

Tarrant County College’s Northwest campus has endeavored on a prairie restoration project at the site of their future Marine Creek Nature Discovery Center (MCNDC) project. The goal is to integrate interdisciplinary teaching across the campus to provide hands-on educational exhibits, recreational activities and research opportunities to students that increase awareness, appreciation and sustainability of the natural environment. Eventually, a sustainable building will sit atop the hill overlooking the restored pocket prairie and Marine Creek Lake.

Professors and students of the Biology & Horticulture Departments have surveyed the site to identify flora and fauna, remove invasive species, seed the site and water it during establishment. The Horticulture Department has been growing native grasses and wildflowers collected from the site in their greenhouse. Join us on a tour of the greenhouse facility and learn about their prairie restoration project.

Economic development is not just about headline-grabbing deals. It’s also about growing a well-trained workforce.

That is where Tarrant County College’s Corporate Solutions and Economic Development office comes in. The new department is located at TCC Northwest Campus in north Fort Worth and wants to provide established companies with tailor-made training for their employees.

“We go out and we engage with CEOs and executives of businesses in the region to really ask one question, and that’s, ‘What are your workforce needs and what can we do to assist you?” said Shannon Bryant, TCC executive vice president of corporate solutions and economic development.

The corporate solutions center is a sprawling 35,000-square-foot facility on the third floor of TCC Northwest Campus. The location is key, Bryant said. The center sits on the runway at Alliance Airport, and is surrounded by a variety of companies, including Hillwood.

The Corporate Solutions and Economic Development office has an entirely new team and is just starting to get to work, Bryant said. Companies have started to use the center to hold meetings and luncheons.

Behind the scenes, staffers have been working with companies to set up specialized training.

For example, Bryant, who has been in her job for two years, pointed to one company that needed a customized titanium welding training program. TCC set up the program and started training workers at the Learning Opportunities Center. Another company had TCC create a customized mentorship program for a new vice president.

“Supporting existing companies is always going to be a priority of the community because we want our companies here to be successful — we want them to grow here and be happy here,” Chris Strayer, the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce’s executive vice president of economic development, said.

Kellie Brunn, the co-owner of two Fort Worth-based companies, recently had her team go through a series of leadership training. TCC worked with her to find the right lessons she wanted to teach.

“We’re a small business, so our resources are limited with time and money to afford time off for our whole team,” she said. “It had to be something that was worthwhile and meaningful.”

The training went off without a hitch, and Brunn is exploring more classes for her team.

“They delivered exactly what they promised to deliver,” Brunn said.

Bryant serves as TCC’s economic development liaison and meets with Hillwood when it is looking at bringing companies to Alliance. She also worked closely with the local chambers of commerce.

When she meets with companies, Bryant’s focus is on workforce development.

“I’ve worked with site selectors for a very long time, and you can go to any city and get tax abatements and get dollars for training,” said Bryant, who previously led a workforce development program for Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. “This work on the customization side really makes all of the difference because it’s really meeting the employer where they are vs. just building some kind of standardized program that goes across all industries.”

The specialized training TCC can create for companies is one way to differentiate Fort Worth from other communities, Strayer said. Fort Worth has to stay out in front of trends — such as building electric cars — and be prepared for them, he added.

“As industry is changing and training is changing and skill sets are changing, we know that we are set up for that, and that we are not going to have to build these things into the future when the need is already there,” he said. “We want to be set up before it gets here.”

Providing training to employees also is about giving underserved populations a shot at climbing up to decision-making positions. Some companies’ leadership do not reflect their workforces. Bryant discusses that with employers and how they are ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion are part of their discussions with their workers. That approach, she said, can help companies keep more of their employees — and lift everyone up.

“It starts with one company, one conversation and one engagement at a time,” Bryant said.

Bryant wants companies to rethink how they view their employees. It’s not about their output, but how workforce development can start to transform a community.

“It’s not just that person, but it’s their family,” Bryant said. “It’s really about that trajectory of success and empowering people and empowering companies to say, ‘Look, I no longer look at my people as a cost. I look at them as an investment.’”

Love Trinity River campus. Cafe is perfect. So glad its open again.

nice place to prepare your future

feels like super high school but with better paid teachers

This place is horrible, don't go here. the classes, food, and teacher are all trash. there's only one good teacher here and that is Bottrell. the bookstore is overpriced. It's either too cold or too hot there's no in-between. the academic advisor don't do anything. everything about this place is trash if I could give it a negative rate, I would.

Great school. I can't complain about anything here.

hated this school while I was in it I transferred out as soon as i could the only plus was saving my money but still not barely worth it i don't get many scholarships as a transfer student

Professors are not helpful at all

All of the TCC Campuses INTERNET is very horrible and doing online school for any Tcc Campuses is also very horrible because is very hard to try to stay in contact with professors and administrators within these campuses because every single departments have different emails and phone numbers in only available certain times throughout the weekend.

I have been virtual virtual for the majority of my experience with the school. There are a lot of components I am unable to comment on due to lack of knowledge.

This college is good. Some professors were really good while others were not. One professor graded everything last second and another said being put in a psych ward was not an excuse to be absent. Bad somewhat outweighs the good.

Tarrant County College is a great school with a variety of classes and degree options at an extremely affordable price. Wonderful staff that makes it their goal to help you succeed!

A pleasant surprise! I went to the South & Trinity River campuses during my time at TCC. Just like any other school, you do need to be selective of your professors, but the majority were helpful, & cared in their classes. There is no difference in quality between university (I'm at UNT) & TCC's classes. A lot of older students who are hardworkers.

I've been going to TCC Northeast for 2 years and so far I have no complaints. Very nice and helpful staffs. So much better than UTA (I'm also in UTA). Tbh, I never wanna leave. I love it here so much. I highly recommend Northeast campus! Everyone there really know what they're doing and will help you succeed.

I am very grateful that TCC came to my school, because if they didn't I would have missed such a wonderful opportunity. Not only are they affordable, they are also close to home. Registering is easy, the classes are fun and the gym/ swimming pool is free to use as long as you have your school ID.

I absolutely LOVED going to Tarrant County College. There were so many classes to choose from, most professors were compassionate and kind, and it was extremely affordable. I graduated with my associates degree and I would recommend anyone attend here. I would even send my babies!

I spent my whole time on NW campus, which isn't exactly the best campus in terms of buildings. There's a good amount of vending machines, the teachers genuinely care, absolutely no campus life w/o joining a club. Lots of people willing to be your reference and help, but nothing special. Still, it's nice and i plan to go back for fun later.

This is the best among local Colleges. Comparing DCC, the north lake college. My friends took calsses over there . We als compare, they regret not taking classes here, also , some transfered here. TCC is so much professional, in classes and out side works and resources.

As far as community colleges go, TCC is a great choice. The campuses are well-tended. There are many spectacular professors who love to teach. The school offers numerous resources for student support and augmentation of educational experiences.

Great School To start your Career!

Awesome school
