About the Debit Card

The EDD issues benefit payments for Disability Insurance, Paid Family Leave, and Unemployment Insurance claims using a visa debit card. This prepaid debit card is a fast, convenient, and secure way to get your benefit payments and is not subject to a credit check or monitoring by the EDD. With the debit card you can:

  • Get your money sooner.
  • Use it everywhere VISA is accepted (in stores, online, and by phone).
  • Withdraw cash at ATMs, banks, and stores with cash back options.
  • Transfer funds to the financial institution of your choice at no additional cost.
  • Be notified when a deposit is made to your card or when you have a low balance.
  • Receive fraud protection from a Zero Liability Policy.

Note: Your card is valid for three years from the date it is issued and is used for all EDD benefit programs, so you should keep it until it expires.

New Cardholders

If you have never had a debit card from the EDD before, Bank of America will mail you a card after your first benefit payment has been issued by the EDD . It can take 7 to 10 business days to receive your card in the mail.

To activate a new card, use one of the following methods:

  • Online - Visit the Bank of America debit card website and select Activate My Card.
  • By phone - If you are calling from within the United States, call 1-866-692-9374 or 1-866-656-5913 (TTY). If you are calling from outside of the United States, call collect at 1-423-262-1650.

Existing Cardholders

Your card is valid for three years from the date it is issued and is used for all EDD benefit programs. If you previously participated in an EDD benefit program using a card, and began participating in an EDD benefit program again within three years of the date the card was issued, you will not have to wait for a new card to receive benefits. We will continue to load funds on your existing card and you will have immediate access to them.

Replacement and Expired Cards

If your card is lost or stolen, you must call Bank of America at 1-866-692-9374 (TTY: 1-866-656-5913). When prompted, choose the “lost or stolen” option from the automated menu. You do not need to have your old card number or speak to a representative.

If your card is damaged, you can order a replacement card online by visiting the Bank of America debit card website.

Replacement cards will be delivered in 7 to 10 business days from the date you order it. Once you order a replacement card, avoid requesting a second one. Ordering a second card will permanently block the first one and this may cause a delay in receiving your payments.

Note: Bank of America representatives cannot answer questions about your claim or pending payments.

Expired Cards

Card Activity within the Last 90 Days or $20 or Greater Balance

If you have activity on your card within the last 90 days, or if there is a balance of $20 or more, Bank of America will automatically mail you a new card before your card expires.

No Card Activity within the Last 90 Days and Balance Less Than $20

If you did not have any activity on the card within the last 90 days, or if you have a balance of less than $20, contact Bank of America debit card customer service to request a new card. You can check your remaining balance by calling one of the telephone numbers listed in the Additional Information section of this page.

Returned Cards

If you no longer want to use your card, contact Bank of America to retrieve any remaining funds, and then destroy your card. Do not mail your card to the EDD for any reason. The EDD cannot accept returned debit cards and cannot remove funds from the debit card. If you return a card to the EDD, we will forward it to Bank of America for destruction.  If you have an overpayment established on your claim and would like to make a payment to the EDD, visit Benefit Overpayment Services to learn how.

Payments

It takes at least three weeks to process a claim for unemployment benefits and issue payment to most eligible workers. Payment information for Unemployment Insurance is updated daily and is available through your UI Online account or by calling the UI Self-Service Phone Line at 1-866-333-4606.

Payment information for Disability Insurance or Paid Family Leave can be accessed through your SDI Online account or by calling one of the toll-free numbers provided at Contact Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave.

Emergency Cash Assistance

Bank of America can assist you with a domestic emergency cash transfer if you need cash from your debit card immediately, such as if your card is lost or you are still waiting for your card to arrive in the mail. You can speak with a Bank of America customer representative by calling one of the phone numbers listed in the Additional Information section of this page. Visit Bank of America’s website and select Fee Information for information about emergency cash transfer fees.

Track Your Payments

Keep track of your debit card payments and balance information by downloading the Bank of America Prepaid Card app from any app store. Payment information is updated daily and is available through your UI Online or SDI Online account or by calling one of the toll-free numbers provided on Contact EDD.

Disclosures and Fees

You will receive a welcome packet with your card. Be sure to read all information including fees for the debit card. For digital wallets, view the Digital Account Fees and Disclosures (PDF). Careful use of this card will help you avoid unnecessary fees.

Bank of America's automated teller machines free its customers from banker's hours. You can make trips to the bank at your convenience, along with your other errands. Unlike waiting in long lines inside the branch, every Bank of America ATM check deposit is simple and takes less time than parking your car.

Bank of America ATM Check Deposit Requirements

While you can withdraw funds from a BOA ATM without an account, only checking and savings account holders can use the bank's ATMs to make deposits. The most common way to make deposits is by using a debit card and your personal identification number; the bank automatically provides account holders with debits cards. Generally, you will choose your PIN when you activate your debit card.

Bank of America ATM Check Deposit Procedures

You don't need a deposit slip to make your BOA ATM check deposit. Endorse your check by signing it on the reserve side as usual. Select "Deposit," then "Checks" when the ATM prompts you for which service you need. If you have more than one check to deposit, endorse them all before proceeding. Most BOA ATMs have a limit of 10 checks per deposit.

The ATM will prompt you to insert the checks into a special slot for check deposits. Once the slot closes, you'll need to wait until the ATM verifies the amount of your check. If you deposit more than one check, the ATM displays an image of each one so you can verify the amounts before you complete the deposit.

Troubleshooting a Bank of America ATM Check Deposit

In some cases, the ATM rejects a check that you are trying to deposit. Currently, BOA machines can't process any check that doesn't have the account and routing number printed with embedded magnetic ink. Checks produced on a home printer won't be accepted.

Extensive wrinkles or folds make it difficult for the ATM to read and process your check. Inserting a check face down usually results in rejection too. If the ATM rejects your check, first turn it over and check that you signed in the correct place. Then, follow the printed diagram on the check slot and re-deposit it.

Receipt Options for ATM Check Deposits

Bank of America gives you a variety of ATM receipt options. If you prefer digital records, choose to receive your receipt by email. You can also choose which type of paper receipt you want. Follow the prompts to select a receipt with images of the checks that you deposited or a summary of your deposit without images.

You also have the option of not receiving a receipt, but the bank can't give you an ATM receipt later. If you don't get one at the time of your deposit, you can retrieve the check images by logging into your account online.

When you complete your transaction by 8 p.m. on any business day, you receive credit for your BOA ATM check deposit on the same day. However, the funds aren't always immediately available as cash would be. The type of checks, the issuer and your account terms are a few of the factors that determine how soon you have access to funds represented by your checks.

Bank of America ATM Check Deposit Using Chip Cards

When you make a deposit using a Bank of America debit card with an embedded chip, the machine retains your card until you finish your transaction. While the bank does this now to provide additional security, it's easy to forget your card when you're finished. To remind you to take your card, BOA ATMs blink and make an alert sound when they eject your chip-enabled card.

Existing Cardholders

Your card is valid for three years from the date it is issued and is used for all EDD benefit programs. If you previously participated in an EDD benefit program using a card, and began participating in an EDD benefit program again within three years of the date the card was issued, you will not have to wait for a new card to receive benefits. Returned Cards

If you no longer want to use your card, contact Bank of America to retrieve any remaining funds, and then destroy your card. Do not mail your card to the EDD for any reason. New Chip-Enabled Debit Cards

Starting July 25, you will receive a new chip-enabled debit card if you:

  • Are a new claimant receiving EDD benefits for the first time.
  • Have a card that is expiring soon.
  • Need a replacement card because your card is expired or has been lost, stolen, or damaged. Learn more about replacement and expired cards.

About the Debit Card

The EDD issues benefit payments for Disability Insurance, Paid Family Leave, and Unemployment Insurance claims using a visa debit card. This prepaid debit card is a fast, convenient, and secure way to get your benefit payments and is not subject to a credit check or monitoring by the EDD. With the debit card you can:

  • Get your money sooner.
  • Use it everywhere VISA is accepted (in stores, online, and by phone).
  • Withdraw cash at ATMs, banks, and stores with cash back options.
  • Transfer funds to the financial institution of your choice at no additional cost.
  • Be notified when a deposit is made to your card or when you have a low balance.
  • Receive fraud protection from a Zero Liability Policy.

Note: Your card is valid for three years from the date it is issued and is used for all EDD benefit programs, so you should keep it until it expires.

New Cardholders

If you have never had a debit card from the EDD before, Bank of America will mail you a card after your first benefit payment has been issued by the EDD . It can take 7 to 10 business days to receive your card in the mail.

To activate a new card, use one of the following methods:

  • Online - Visit the Bank of America debit card website and select Activate My Card.
  • By phone - If you are calling from within the United States, call 1-866-692-9374 or 1-866-656-5913 (TTY). If you are calling from outside of the United States, call collect at 1-423-262-1650.

Existing Cardholders

Your card is valid for three years from the date it is issued and is used for all EDD benefit programs. If you previously participated in an EDD benefit program using a card, and began participating in an EDD benefit program again within three years of the date the card was issued, you will not have to wait for a new card to receive benefits. We will continue to load funds on your existing card and you will have immediate access to them.

Replacement and Expired Cards

If your card is lost or stolen, you must call Bank of America at 1-866-692-9374 (TTY: 1-866-656-5913). When prompted, choose the “lost or stolen” option from the automated menu. You do not need to have your old card number or speak to a representative.

If your card is damaged, you can order a replacement card online by visiting the Bank of America debit card website.

Replacement cards will be delivered in 7 to 10 business days from the date you order it. Once you order a replacement card, avoid requesting a second one. Ordering a second card will permanently block the first one and this may cause a delay in receiving your payments.

Note: Bank of America representatives cannot answer questions about your claim or pending payments.

Expired Cards

Card Activity within the Last 90 Days or $20 or Greater Balance

If you have activity on your card within the last 90 days, or if there is a balance of $20 or more, Bank of America will automatically mail you a new card before your card expires.

No Card Activity within the Last 90 Days and Balance Less Than $20

If you did not have any activity on the card within the last 90 days, or if you have a balance of less than $20, contact Bank of America debit card customer service to request a new card. You can check your remaining balance by calling one of the telephone numbers listed in the Additional Information section of this page.

Returned Cards

If you no longer want to use your card, contact Bank of America to retrieve any remaining funds, and then destroy your card. Do not mail your card to the EDD for any reason. The EDD cannot accept returned debit cards and cannot remove funds from the debit card. If you return a card to the EDD, we will forward it to Bank of America for destruction.  If you have an overpayment established on your claim and would like to make a payment to the EDD, visit Benefit Overpayment Services to learn how.

Payments

It takes at least three weeks to process a claim for unemployment benefits and issue payment to most eligible workers. Payment information for Unemployment Insurance is updated daily and is available through your UI Online account or by calling the UI Self-Service Phone Line at 1-866-333-4606.

Payment information for Disability Insurance or Paid Family Leave can be accessed through your SDI Online account or by calling one of the toll-free numbers provided at Contact Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave.

Emergency Cash Assistance

Bank of America can assist you with a domestic emergency cash transfer if you need cash from your debit card immediately, such as if your card is lost or you are still waiting for your card to arrive in the mail. You can speak with a Bank of America customer representative by calling one of the phone numbers listed in the Additional Information section of this page. Visit Bank of America’s website and select Fee Information for information about emergency cash transfer fees.

Track Your Payments

Keep track of your debit card payments and balance information by downloading the Bank of America Prepaid Card app from any app store. Payment information is updated daily and is available through your UI Online or SDI Online account or by calling one of the toll-free numbers provided on Contact EDD.

Disclosures and Fees

You will receive a welcome packet with your card. Be sure to read all information including fees for the debit card. For digital wallets, view the Digital Account Fees and Disclosures (PDF). Careful use of this card will help you avoid unnecessary fees.

Bank of America's automated teller machines free its customers from banker's hours. You can make trips to the bank at your convenience, along with your other errands. Unlike waiting in long lines inside the branch, every Bank of America ATM check deposit is simple and takes less time than parking your car.

Bank of America ATM Check Deposit Requirements

While you can withdraw funds from a BOA ATM without an account, only checking and savings account holders can use the bank's ATMs to make deposits. The most common way to make deposits is by using a debit card and your personal identification number; the bank automatically provides account holders with debits cards. Generally, you will choose your PIN when you activate your debit card.

Bank of America ATM Check Deposit Procedures

You don't need a deposit slip to make your BOA ATM check deposit. Endorse your check by signing it on the reserve side as usual. Select "Deposit," then "Checks" when the ATM prompts you for which service you need. If you have more than one check to deposit, endorse them all before proceeding. Most BOA ATMs have a limit of 10 checks per deposit.

The ATM will prompt you to insert the checks into a special slot for check deposits. Once the slot closes, you'll need to wait until the ATM verifies the amount of your check. If you deposit more than one check, the ATM displays an image of each one so you can verify the amounts before you complete the deposit.

Troubleshooting a Bank of America ATM Check Deposit

In some cases, the ATM rejects a check that you are trying to deposit. Currently, BOA machines can't process any check that doesn't have the account and routing number printed with embedded magnetic ink. Checks produced on a home printer won't be accepted.

Extensive wrinkles or folds make it difficult for the ATM to read and process your check. Inserting a check face down usually results in rejection too. If the ATM rejects your check, first turn it over and check that you signed in the correct place. Then, follow the printed diagram on the check slot and re-deposit it.

Receipt Options for ATM Check Deposits

Bank of America gives you a variety of ATM receipt options. If you prefer digital records, choose to receive your receipt by email. You can also choose which type of paper receipt you want. Follow the prompts to select a receipt with images of the checks that you deposited or a summary of your deposit without images.

You also have the option of not receiving a receipt, but the bank can't give you an ATM receipt later. If you don't get one at the time of your deposit, you can retrieve the check images by logging into your account online.

When you complete your transaction by 8 p.m. on any business day, you receive credit for your BOA ATM check deposit on the same day. However, the funds aren't always immediately available as cash would be. The type of checks, the issuer and your account terms are a few of the factors that determine how soon you have access to funds represented by your checks.

Bank of America ATM Check Deposit Using Chip Cards

When you make a deposit using a Bank of America debit card with an embedded chip, the machine retains your card until you finish your transaction. While the bank does this now to provide additional security, it's easy to forget your card when you're finished. Fees will be imposed for deposit discrepancies and adjustments made at CO-OP Network Vcom-owned ATMs in the United States. For deposits made at CO-OP ATMs, the owner will impose a fee of $2.00 per item if an adjustment is processed due to one of the following discrepancies in the deposit: the currency appears to be counterfeit; the deposit contents do not equal the deposit amount in U.S. dollars, as entered into the ATM; an item is unsigned by the maker; an item is dated more than six months prior to the date of deposit; the numerical and written amounts do not agree; the deposit is over $1,000 and contains an obvious alteration. For each adjustment initiated for deposit items processed and subsequently returned, the ATM owner will impose a fee of $6.00 per item at the time the adjustment is processed. The standard daily limit at CO-OP ATMs is $10,000 per card, per business day.
