Preparing for Surgery

Your physician will schedule your procedure with our center. You will need to pre-register online at One Medical Passport. A member of our staff will call you one to two days prior to your day of surgery to review your health history and pre-admission testing requirements. Please prepare a list of your medications and any questions so they will be available at the time of your phone interview.

Please make arrangements to have a responsible adult drive you to and from the center. It is helpful to have this person at the surgery center to review your discharge instructions, but they do not need to stay the entire time you are with us. To ensure your safety you MUST arrange for someone to take you home AND stay with you following your procedure.

Prepare for surgery by not smoking. Smoking produces mucous and increases the risks of complications. Patients who have emphysema or bronchitis should avoid being around smokers completely for at least 48 hours prior to the surgery.

If you’re having a colonoscopy procedure, please download our detailed guide to preparing for your procedure.

Day Before Surgery:

Do not eat or drink anything eight hours prior to your surgery. This includes water, coffee, tea, soda and all types of food, candy, mints, chewing tobacco, etc. This is for your own safety and convenience since your surgery may be canceled if you eat or drink after midnight. You may brush your teeth and rinse your mouth, but do not swallow any water. These same restrictions apply to children. Children under 10 years of age should not brush their teeth the day of the surgery.

Your anesthesia provider will contact you the night before your scheduled procedure. Please make sure you provide an updated phone number where you can be reached.

If you develop a cold, persistent cough, fever, other health problems, or if you need to cancel your surgery, please notify your physician and the Surgery Center at Tanasbourne at 503-216-9500.

Day of Surgery:

Please dress for comfort. You will need to change into a patient gown at the center.

If you wear contact lenses, please bring a container for the lenses or wear your glasses on the day of the procedure.

Please leave valuables such as jewelry, wallets and purses at home. All jewelry, including wedding rings and any body piercing, must be removed prior to surgery to ensure your safety.

Please bring your insurance card and identification.

When will I be able to go home?

Most patients are ready to go home between one to two hours after surgery. This depends on the type of surgery and anesthesia, pain control, side effects and individual variation from patient to patient.

You will receive both verbal and written discharge instructions to follow. You must make arrangements for a responsible adult to escort you home. You should have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours after your surgery. You will not be allowed to leave alone or drive yourself home if you received anesthesia.

In general, for 24 hours after your anesthesia:

  • Do not drink alcoholic beverages, or use nonprescription medications
  • Do not drive a car or operate dangerous machinery
  • Do not make important decisions.

Patients sometimes experience drowsiness and minor after-effects following surgery and anesthesia, including muscle aches, sore throat and occasional dizziness, headaches or nausea. These side effects usually decline rapidly in the hours following surgery, but it may take several days before they are gone completely. Plan to take it easy for a few days until you feel back to normal. Know that a period of recovery at home is common and to be expected.
