TCF Bank and Huntington Bank merger causes debit card error for several customers

MINNEAPOLIS — Insufficient funds. Declined. Those were a couple of the notifications many TCF Bank debit card holders received Friday night and Saturday morning in the wake of the company's merger with Huntington Bank.

"Went to fuel up the truck, went in, tried to pay, debit card declined," said TCF customer Matthew Koscielski.

Koscielski is one of several customers who say they were notified ahead of time that online banking would be down through the transition period over the weekend, but could continue using TCF and Huntington Bank ATM's with no ATM transaction fees.

However, customers say they never received any sort of outage warning involving debit cards.

"Especially, you know, the day of payday, nevertheless," said Koscielski.

Many customers took to social media voicing their concerns. One customer wrote: "Its shameful, people are trying to buy food, medications, ubers and lyfts with no one to contact."

"It wasn't until people started complaining that they finally this morning started to answer those complaints," said Koscielski.

The company responded on Twitter Saturday morning explaining there was a conversion error Friday night where debit cards were temporarily unavailable, even though the old TCF debit cards were supposed to be active through Nov. 4th.

"After while, yeah, it got a little scary and it's like, 'What's going on here? You know, where's our money?" said Koscielski. He went on to say, "no gas or, you know, risk of being stranded that kind of ... irritated me."

While irritating and frustrating, for many it's been a lesson in being financially prepared with a backup plan when all else fails.

"I always keep a little bit extra spare cash because I understand you know technology stuff fails," said Koscielski.

Koscielski mentioned he was able to use his debit card as credit, which worked.

As of Saturday night, neither TCF Bank or Huntington Bank commented on when the error will be fixed.

Late Saturday afternoon, a few customers told KARE 11 they were able to make purchases on their debit cards again.

Huntington National Bank is a Columbus, Ohio-based financial institution offering customers in the Midwest an array of services, including checking accounts, savings accounts and certificates of deposit (CDs). It also provides various loan, insurance and investment options. However, you have to be a resident of Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, West Virginia, Pennsylvania or Wisconsin to open an account.

The bank’s savings products don’t carry the best interest rates, but you can link them to checking accounts in order to eliminate certain fees and get perks like overdraft protection. In the case of CDs, connecting them to different checking accounts can bump up your interest rate. Huntington also offers a fairly unique 24-hour overdraft grace period. So if your account dips to a negative balance and you push it up to the positive range within a day, the bank will waive its overdraft fee. Huntington’s award-winning customer service also makes it stand out.

Overall, Huntington National Bank offers an array of customizable products that can serve people with basic banking needs—especially if they value face-to-face customer service and the convenience of having a local branch.

The Huntington National Bank Interest Rate Comparison

Huntington National Bank Overview

The Huntington National Bank was founded in 1866 in Columbus, Ohio, where it’s still based. Today, the bank is a subsidiary of Huntington Bancshares Inc., a bank holding company with more than $74 billion in assets under management.

The bank continues to serve clients in the Midwest by operating branches throughout Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Following a stock and cash acquisition of the Ohio-based FirstMerit Bank in 2016, Huntington now stands as one of Ohio’s biggest banks by deposits. It currently serves customers at more than 1,000 branches and has more than 1,800 ATMs.

Huntington offers checking, saving, credit and investment accounts as well as a variety of mortgage, home equity, auto loan, direct lending and insurance options.

Huntington’s consumer products are highly customizable. For example, you can combine different checking and savings accounts for specific perks like waiving monthly service fees or eliminating minimum balances. In addition, the bank earned Highest Customer Satisfaction with Retail Banking in the North Central Region by J.D. Power for five years in a row.

Huntington Bank Account Features

Huntington Relationship Savings

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum Deposit$2,500
Access to Your Savings AccountOnline, mobile, over the phone and at physical branches.
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
Fees
  • $10 monthly service charge unless you keep a average daily balance of at least $2,500 or link to a Huntington 5 Interest Checking Account or Huntington 25 Interest Checking Account
  • $3 for each non-Huntington ATM transaction
  • 3% foreign transaction fee
Terms and Rates
  • 0.02% APY on all balances for standalone savings account
  • 0.03% APY when linked to Huntington 5 Interest Checking Account
  • 0.05% APY when linked to Huntington 25 Interest Checking Account
  • 0.08% APY when linked to Huntington Private Client Account

The Huntington Relationship Savings account doesn’t offer the best interest rates compared to some online banks, but it outshines most major brick-and-mortar banks on that front.

The interest rate and variable APY currently stand at 0.02%. By linking the account to a Huntington 5 Interest Checking Account, however, you can bump those percentages to a variable 0.03%. And by linking your savings account to a Huntington 25 Checking Account or a Private Client Account, you can raise them to 0.05% or 0.08%. However, you can find competing savings rates with online banks that bring your yield closer to 1% or higher.

The minimum opening balance for a Relationship Savings Account is also rather high at $2,500. However, the bank offers some helpful perks including overdraft protection. An overdraft happens when a payment is processed, but there isn’t enough money in it to cover the purchase. Most banks cover the bill but charge an overdraft fee for doing so.

However, Huntington powers all its savings and checking accounts with a 24-hour overdraft grace period.

This means you can waive the $37.50 overdraft fee by making a deposit that brings the account back to the positive range by midnight on the business day after your account drops into the negative range. You can even waive the overdraft fee if you bring it to above -$5.99.

Huntington goes the extra mile by eliminating an overdraft fee from the day before as long as by the next day you bring your account back to the positive (not counting the previous overdraft fee).

You can make a deposit at a Huntington branch or ATM. It's also possible to put money into your account by making an electronic transfer from another account at an ATM or through Huntington’s online, mobile or telephone banking services. However, you can’t use a night depository box or drop box at a branch in order to avoid an overdraft fee.

In addition, the 24-hour overdraft grace period does not apply to return fees. These are generally levied when a check bounces or a company tries to draw an automatic payment from your account when there is not enough money in it to cover the charge. In this case, Huntington won’t process the transaction and, in effect, returns your check or automatic payment through whatever networks the bank received it. Huntington will then charge you a $37.50 return fee.

However, you can avoid both overdraft fees and return fees if you link your Huntington savings account to one of the bank’s checking accounts. If there is enough money to cover a payment that will push your savings account into the negative, the bank will transfer the necessary amount from your checking account to cover the charge. Therefore, neither an overdraft fee nor a return fee goes into effect regardless of what the payment was for.

Huntington’s deposit-to-deposit overdraft plan applies to all checking and savings account, but you have to specify to the bank that you want this protection.

Keep in mind, however, that federal regulations limit the number of transfers you can make on savings and on money market accounts during the calendar month or statement cycle. The transfer of money from a checking account into a savings or money market account to avoid an overdraft fee or return fee will count as a transaction.

Huntington charges a $2 excessive debit fee for each withdrawal or transfer (excluding ATM, telephone and internet banking transfers) that exceeds six per calendar month if you receive quarterly statements or six per statement cycle if you receive monthly statements.

But tracking your daily balance and bill payment alerts regularly via the Huntington Mobile Banking App or online is the best way to avoid overdrafts or returns.

By setting up free alerts through the banking app, you can receive text and email notifications when your account dips below a certain amount or when it’s overdrawn. It can also alert you when a bill payment deadline is near.

Avoiding the $10 monthly fee for the Relationship Savings Account is fairly simple by linking to a Huntington Checking Account.

However, Huntington will charge specific fees that most banks will charge as well. These include a $31.00 stop payment fee, a $10 return deposit item fee, a $25 fee for expedited delivery of a debit card, a $6 fee per cashier check and fees for various wire transfers ranging from $15 to $75. These apply to all Huntington savings and money market accounts (MMAs).

Overdraft fees in particular can really add up, which is why Huntington’s 24-hour overdraft grace period really makes it stand out. But you have to take advantage of it by keeping an eye on your transaction history to know when you have to take action. If your account remains overdrawn for five consecutive business days, the bank will charge you another overdraft fee on the sixth business day. It will then charge you a $25 fee for every consecutive business day your account is overdrawn up to a maximum of $100.

Huntington Premier Savings

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum Deposit$50
Access to Your Savings AccountOnline, mobile and physical branches.
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
Fees$4 monthly service fee unless you meet the following requirements.
  • Link it to a Huntington Asterisk-Free Checking Account or a Private Client Account.
  • Keep an average daily balance of at least $300 by end of calendar month or statement cycle.
Current Terms and Rates0.02% APY

This savings account comes with all the features of the Relationship Savings Account, but its opening balance minimum is much smaller at $50. The current APY and interest rate for this account are 0.02%.

You can avoid the monthly service fee by keeping an average daily balance of at least $300 when the payment is due or by linking to a Huntington Asterisk-Free Checking Account or a Private Client Account. Still, the fee is relatively low at $4.

But beyond the fact that it’s generally less expensive, this account is not much different than the Relationship Savings Account. So if you can’t fork over $2,500 into a savings account and don't want to open another checking account to avoid a fee, this could be the right savings account to start building that rainy-day fund.

Huntington Certificates of Deposit (CDs)

Key FeaturesDetails

  • 1,095 Day: 0.10% APY
  • 1,460 Day: 0.10% APY
  • 1,825 Day (5 years): 0.10% APY

Huntington National Bank offers CDs with various rates and terms. A CD is like a savings account with a clock. You agree to lock up your money for a set amount of time and the bank will pay you interest on that amount. Normally, these interest rates tend to be higher than your average savings account. However, you’ll take a penalty hit if you remove your money early.

The minimum deposit to open a standard CD is $1,000. You need a deposit of more than $100,000 to open a jumbo CD.

Beyond the promotional rates, however, Huntington CDs don’t pack a very strong punch. Even the highest interest rate for a fixed-rate jumbo CD is still lower than the current rates for several online savings accounts. Overall, a Huntington CD is not exactly the place you want to lock your money in if you expect it to grow significantly while it’s away from your pocket.

Your early withdrawal penalty will depend on the amount of money you put in, how long you kept your money in the account and the interest rate at the time you withdraw your funds. But an early withdrawal penalty is generally hefty with any bank. Be sure to follow one of the golden rules of investing in any CD: don’t touch your money until the term ends.

If you choose to invest in a Huntington CD, you have a 10-business-day grace period to take your money out after the term ends. At that point, the CD will get renewed. This is like getting the same type of CD with whatever money was left in the previous one.

Huntington Money Market Savings Account

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum DepositNone, but you need at least $25,000 to earn interest unless you link to a Huntington checking account.
Access to Your Money Market AccountOnline, mobile and physical branches.
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
Fees$25 unless you meet the following guidelines
Current Terms and RatesNon-Relationship Rate
  • Interest for First 90 Days- Balances of $25,0000 and over: 0.05% APY
  • After Intro - Balances of $25,000.00 and over: 0.05% APY
When Linked to Huntington 5 Checking
  • Interest for First 90 Days- Balances of $25,0000 and over: 0.05% APY
  • After Intro - Balances of $25,000.00 and over: 0.05% APY
When Linked to Huntington 25 Checking Account
  • Interest for First 90 Days- Balances of $25,0000 and over: 0.05% APY
  • After Intro - Balances of $25,000.00 and over: 0.05% APY
When Linked to Private Client Account
  • Interest for First 90 Days- Balances of $25,0000 and over: 0.08% APY
  • After Intro - Balances of $25,000.00 and over: 0.08% APY

Huntington MMAs require a rather large minimum opening balance of $25,000 to generate a variable introductory interest rate of 0.05% or 0.08% depending on which account you have. You can earn interest on a lesser balance by linking it to a Huntington 5 Checking Account, a Huntington 25 Checking Account or a Private Client Account.

If you have a balance of at least $25,000, you can bump your interest even further by linking to these checking accounts.

Still, you can find money market account rates with online banks that offer near or slightly better interest rates without such an initial opening balance or requirement to open another account.

You may also be able to raise the interest rate on your money market account if it’s linked to a relationship savings account that’s also linked to a Huntington 5 or Huntington 25 checking account.

That’s because the interest rate on the Huntington Relationship Savings and Money Market accounts are variable. So if a rate changes, the bank will raise the interest rate as long as either one is linked to a Huntington checking account.

This is how it works for both the Relationship Savings Account and the Huntington Money Market Account. You may qualify for an additional amount to be added to your interest rate after the rate is adjusted if your account is tied to a Huntington 25 Checking Account.

You may also qualify for an additional amount to be added to your interest rate after the rate is adjusted if either account is tied to a Huntington 5 Checking Account.

But either way, better rates are out there without these requirements.

Huntington 25 Checking Account

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum Deposit$25
Access to Your Checking AccountOnline, mobile and physical branches.
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
Fees$25 monthly maintenance fee unless you maintain a total balance of $25,000 in your Huntington Relationship Savings Account.
Current Terms and Rates0.10% APY

The Huntington 25 Checking Account is the bank’s premier checking account with a 0.10% APY, which is a nice perk considering several checking accounts from brick-and-mortar banks don’t earn any interest at all.

It also waives all out-of-network ATM fees per statement cycle, so you have easy access to your money wherever you are. You can also bump the interest rate on your Relationship Savings Account or Money Market Account by linking either one to your Huntingdon 25 Checking account at opening.

All Huntington checking accounts offer the 24-hour overdraft grace protection, free online bill pay and all-day deposit, which means you can deposit checks via an ATM or by snapping a photo of your check on your mobile device at any time. Fund availability, however, may vary.

You can also link checking accounts to Huntington savings or money market accounts for added overdraft protection. In the event your checking account can’t cover a balance, the bank will transfer available funds from your savings or money market accounts. But remember, it counts as a transaction when the money is coming from the savings or money market account.

Being a Huntington 25 Checking Account holder also gives you a $250 discount on closing costs for mortgages that the bank offers.

Overall, this is a fairly strong checking account that collects interest and offers some great perks, especially if you’re tired of out-of-network ATM fees. However, the minimum balance to knock out the $25 monthly service fee is fairly high.

Huntington 5 Checking Account

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum Deposit$25
Access to Your Account Online, mobile and physical branches.
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
Fees$5 monthly maintenance fee unless you maintain a Total Relationship Balance of at least $5,000.
Current Terms and Rates0.02% APY

The Huntington 5 Checking Account earns an APY of 0.02% on all balances. The bank also waives your first five non-Huntington ATM withdrawals per statement cycle. Huntington goes a step further by also reimbursing you for any fees charged by the owners of these same ATMs.

The monthly maintenance fee is low at $5, but you can waive it if you maintain a monthly Total Relationship Balance of at least $5,000. That includes all your money held by Huntington National Bank and qualifying investments with its affiliate The Huntington Investment Company. Qualified investments generally include those held in brokerage accounts as well as some direct investments in mutual funds, annuities and retail life insurance products.

In addition, you can get a 0.05% APY bump on your Relationship Savings Account by opening this checking account and linking it to the savings account. The same will apply when the varying interest on your Money Market Account changes if it’s connected to a Huntington 5 Checking Account.

Linking your Huntington 5 Checking Account to your Relationship Savings Account will also knock out the monthly service charge for the savings component.

Overall, this is a notch below the Huntington 25. But it’s a fairly simple checking account that also earns interest and carries a low opening balance and monthly fee if you can’t manage to waive it. But if you have enough money with Huntington to waive the fee, you might want to opt for the 25 option with a stronger interest rate and more perks.

Huntington Asterisk-Free Checking Account

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum DepositNone
Access to Your Checking AccountOnline, mobile and physical branches.
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
FeesNo monthly maintenance fee.

The Huntington Asterisk-Free Checking Account is one of the bank’s simplest offers. It comes with the same benefits offered by all of Huntington’s checking accounts, but it also carries no monthly maintenance fee.

The bank waives the minimum balance fee for a Premier Savings Account if you link it to an Asterisk-free checking account.

This option is basically for the customer who wants a bare-bones checking account. It generates no interest, but it will allow you to link conveniently to a standard savings account that would require no minimum balance. It’s a good combination for the customer who wants to start building his nest egg while keeping banking fairly simple.

Huntington IRA CDs

Key FeaturesDetails
Minimum Deposit$1,000 for CD
Access to Your IRA CD Online, by phone or at a branch
SecurityFDIC insurance up to the maximum amount allowed by law.
FeesNo monthly service fee but you may face an early withdrawal penalty and applicable IRS penalties.

When it comes to retirement planning, Huntington can set you up with an IRA. You can sign up for a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA, which lets you withdrawal your earnings tax-free at retirement if you’re at least age 59.5 and have had the account for at least five years.

As far as investments go, you can also take out a CD. The same rates apply for CDs as they would if you were investing them directly instead of parking your money in an IRA. However, you get the tax benefits of either a traditional or Roth IRA.

Where Can I Find Huntington National Bank?

You can find Huntington National Bank online and through physical branches throughout Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. You can also access Huntington’s mobile banking app.

The bank is currently active in more than 1,000 locations and operates around 1,800 ATMs.

What Can You Do Online With Huntington National Bank?

Huntington’s website allows you to do just about anything you can do with any major bank’s website. The mobile banking app lets you check your balance, deposit checks, pay bills, transfer money to other Huntington account holders and look up locations of branches and ATMs via an interactive map.

You can also use the app to set up email and text alerts letting you know when a bill payment is coming up, when there’s a withdrawal and more. The alerts capabilities are customizable and are great if you like to be 100% on top of your finances.

How Do I Access My Money?

You can access your money online, through the app or at a physical branch. You can also deposit checks via an ATM or through your mobile device at any time of the day.

How Can I Save More Money With Huntington National Bank?

Huntington National Bank doesn’t excel with its savings offerings. Its savings, MMAs and CDs carry relatively low rates compared to online banks. However, you can waive several recurring fees by linking to other accounts or maintaining certain balances. Its 24-hour overdraft grace period, which is standard with all accounts, is also beneficial if you tend to fall into overdraft pits. However, it’s useful only if you keep an eye on your transaction history and bills. Luckily, the Huntington mobile banking app makes this very easy.

What’s the Process for Opening an Account With National Huntington Bank?

The easiest way to open an account with Huntington National Bank is online. You’ll need your government-issued ID and Social Security number. You’ll also have to provide some basic personal information like date of birth and your email address. In addition, you’ll have to have Adobe Reader to submit electronic documents. You’ll also be asked a series of questions.

The whole process should take about 10 minutes.

What’s the Catch?

You have to be a resident in one of the states where Huntington National Bank operates to sign up for an account. Once you open an account, you’ll have access to more than 1,000 branches and 1,800 ATMs. The bank’s saving accounts don’t generate much interest, but you can save on fees if you link them with checking accounts. Its 24-hour overdraft grace period is particularly unique and helpful.

Bottom Line

If you live in the states where it operates, Huntington National Bank acts as a full-service bank that can provide you with all the basics to meet your banking needs. It also offers an array of other options including mortgages, specialty mortgages, direct loans, auto loans, insurance and investments. Its mobile banking app offers a good user experience and is especially helpful with its array of alerts. You can customize these notifications to keep yourself on top of your finances and use them to find a nearby branch or ATM.

  • Robust customer support: Customers can reach a customer service agent via phone daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (ET). You can also access an automated assistant any time on the website and find answers to your questions in the easy-to-navigate and thorough FAQ for customer support. Cons Explained

  • Only available in 10 states: Huntington currently has a presence in just 10 states: Ohio, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and West Virginia.
  • Low annual percentage yield (APY): Huntington's rates for interest-bearing accounts are easily beat by other banks, especially online-only banks that do not have to invest in brick-and-mortar branches.
  • High minimum balances on interest-bearing checking accounts: Though the basic checking account doesn't charge fees or require a minimum balance, interest-bearing accounts require either a $5,000 minimum balance or a $25,000 minimum balance (across all accounts) to remain fee free.
  • High overdraft fees: ThoughHuntington offers methods to avoid overdraft fees, the fee itself is $36 per overdraft. This is higher than many other banks.

For accounts or products that have area-specific interest rates, customers who live outside of the 10-state region will receive the rate associated with Columbus, Ohio, where Huntington is headquartered.

Who Is Huntington Best For?

Huntington will appeal to customers looking for basic checking and savings accounts. It will be especially tempting to those who:

  • Live within Huntington's 10-state geographic footprint
  • Want multiple options to avoid overdraft fees
  • Need a truly free checking account
  • Would like to have their checking and savings under one roof

What Does Huntington Offer?

Huntington offers a robust menu of products and services including:

Savings Accounts

Huntington Premier Savings

This is the basic savings account for Huntington customers. Premier Savings is free of fees for customers who have a linked Asterisk-Free Checking account, or who maintain an average daily balance of $300 or more. Otherwise, the monthly maintenance fee is $4. You can open an account with a minimum deposit of $50.

Premier Savings offers savers an APY of 0.01% and only requires a balance of $0.01 to earn. Deposit-to-deposit overdraft protection is provided if you have a linked checking account. If you overdraw, Huntington will automatically transfer money in increments of $100 to cover the overdraft from your Premier Savings account. There is no fee for this protection, but be aware of potential transfer limits.

Huntington Relationship Savings

This account gives savers an improved APY that gets even better if you have additional linked accounts. The basic rate is 0.02% and goes up based on which type of accounts you also have with Huntington:

Relationship Savings Rates
Relationship RateAPY
Non-Relationship Rate0.01%
Relationship Savings linked with Huntington 5 Checking0.02%
Relationship Savings linked with Huntington 25 Checking0.02%
Relationship Savings linked with Private Client Account0.06%

With the improved rate comes bigger costs, however. Relationship Savings is free for customers who maintain an average daily balance of $2,500 or link the account to either a Huntington 5 or Huntington 25 checking account. Both have a minimum daily balance requirement and a fee if that balance is not met. Otherwise, savers with a Relationship Savings account will pay a $10 monthly maintenance fee.

Like the Premier Savings account, Relationship Savings offers deposit-to-deposit overdraft protection, provided you link to a Huntington 5 Checking account.

Premier Savings and Relationship Savings Rates and Terms
AccountMonthly Maintenance FeeMinimum Balance to Avoid FeeAPY
Premier Savings$4$3000.02%
Relationship Savings$10$2,500Ranging from 0.02% to 0.06%

Checking Accounts

Asterisk-Free Checking

Huntington tries very hard to make sure this basic checking account lives up to the "Asterisk-Free" name. There is no monthly maintenance fee, no minimum deposit to open the account, and no minimum balance required. And contrary to common banking policies in the 21st Century, Huntington does not charge fees for providing paper statements rather than email statements, if that's your preference.

Additionally, the all-day deposit policy, which treats any deposit made before midnight on a business day as getting in on the same business day, is a remarkably forgiving rule that helps customers stay in the black. Pair that with the 24-hour grace policy for overdrafts, which gives customers until midnight the day after an overdraft to make a deposit or transfer to cover the overdraft, as well as the free deposit-to-deposit overdraft protection with a Premier Savings account.

If you overdraw funds, the higher-than-average overdraft fee of $36 can be levied up to four times per day.

Huntington 5 Checking

This is Huntington's lower-level interest-bearing checking account. Customers can earn 0.05% APY on their account balance. There is no minimum required to earn or no minimum deposit to open this account. If you maintain $5,000 in total relationship balances, there is no fee. Otherwise, you will pay $5 per month.

Huntington 5 Checking offers the same forgiving policies as Asterisk-Free checking: all day deposit, a 24-hour grace period, and overdraft protection. You need to link this account to a Relationship Savings account to receive the overdraft protection. In addition, account holders are also eligible for 1.05% cash back with a linked Voice Credit Card with Rewards, as well as five out-of-network ATM fee waivers per month.

Huntington 25 Checking

For customers looking for higher rates from an interest-bearing checking account, the bank offers Huntington 25 Checking. Account holders earn 0.05% APY on any size balance. However, expect to pay $25 per month in maintenance fees unless you are able to maintain $25,000 in total relationship balances among your accounts.

Like the other checking accounts, Huntington 25 provides all-day deposit, a 24-hour grace period, and overdraft protection (with a Relationship Savings account).

Huntington 25 also comes with some other major perks:

  • Free credit and identity monitoring
  • Free paper checks
  • Unlimited out-of-network ATM fee waivers
  • 1.25% cash back on purchases made with a linked Voice Credit Card with rewards
  • 0.15%–0.50% rate discount on a home equity line of credit (HELOC), plus an annual fee waiver
  • A mortgage relationship discount of up to 0.375%
  • 100 commission-free online equity or exchange-traded fund (ETF) trades per year through Huntington Financial Advisors

Huntington 5 Checking$5$5,0000.05%

Money Market Account

Huntington Relationship Money Market Account

Like the Relationship Savings account, Huntington's money market account offers better rates if you have additional accounts. Provided you have a minimum of $25,000 in your Relationship Money Market account, you can earn between 0.05% and 0.06% APY depending on what other accounts you have at Huntington. Balances below $25,000 don't earn interest.

The Relationship Money Market account also comes with a $25 monthly fee, which is waived for customers who either maintain a $25,000 minimum balance or who have a linked Huntington 5 or Huntington 25 checking account.

Like Huntington's traditional checking accounts, the Relationship Money Market account also provides all-day deposit, a 24-hour grace period, and overdraft protection.

CDs

Huntington offers standard CDs with terms ranging from one to 72 months. CDs require a minimum deposit of $1,000 and rates range from 0.01% to 0.03% APY.

Jumbo CDs are also available, with a minimum deposit of $100,000. The terms range from seven to 1,825 days (approximately 60 months) and the rates from 0.01% to 0.03%.

The fact that Huntington describes its jumbo CD terms in days, rather than months, makes it difficult to compare jumbo rates with standard rates. Converting the terms from days to months helps to clarify that jumbo rates seem to be approximately the same for similar term lengths.

Credit Cards

Huntington has a single credit card, the Voice Credit Card, offered through Mastercard. Customers can choose to receive cashback rewards or a lower annual percentage rate (APR).

Other Financial Products Offered by Huntington

In addition to the above products and services, Huntington also offers the following:

  • Car loans
  • Purchase mortgages
  • Home equity loans
  • Home equity lines of credit (HELOCs)
  • IRAs
  • Self-directed trading
  • Managed investment portfolios
  • Private banking
  • Financial advisors
  • Business loans

Huntington Customer Service

Customers have a number of avenues available to reach customer support, starting with live agents available daily by phone (800-480-2265) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (ET). The website also boasts automated customer support systems, as well as an easy-to-use search tool, and a comprehensive FAQ page. You can also reach out to Huntington via Twitter or Facebook any time.

How to Bank with Huntington

You can open an account online or in a branch. Though Huntington is only present in 10 states, the bank appears to be friendly to customers outside of this region.

The Huntington mobile app allows customers to handle transactions (including mobile check deposit) on the go. The app has a 4.8/5-star rating on Apple and 3.8/5-star rating on Google.

Verdict

Customers looking for solid options for basic checking and savings accounts would be well served by Huntington. Its truly free checking account, forgiving policies that keep minor mistakes from blowing up, and easy methods to avoid fees with the basic savings account make it attractive to many customers' needs. Add in the fact that Huntington also offers a wide array of other products and services, and it's clear that this is a good one-stop-shop for banking customers.

For those with higher balances, Huntington is not necessarily a good choice. The rates available on all the interest-bearing accounts are not as high as can be found at other institutions, particularly online-only banks. Additionally, Huntington is only present in 10 states which limits the bank's reach, especially for customers who want basic banking options and like to able to walk into a branch.

Huntington Bank to Offer Customers Online Banking Security Software

Huntington Bancshares Inc. in Columbus, Ohio, has selected Trusteer Rapport and Trusteer Pinpoint to protect its commercial and retail banking customers from online fraud.

The $54.8 billion-asset Huntington National Bank, which serves customers in six Midwestern states, is offering Trusteer as a free download from its website, Jeff Dennes, senior vice president responsible for the company's online banking, said in a news release.

Trusteer has a cybercrime prevention network that spans hundreds of organizations and protects banks against threats that first target other, often larger Trusteer customers, Trusteer said on Tuesday.

Trusteer Rapport is said to prevent malware from exploiting browser and add-on vulnerabilities, installing itself on a device, capturing credentials and personal information entered in the browser and initiating fraudulent transactions or tampering with in-process transactions.

Asterisk-Free Checking $150 Bank Bonus

huntington bank promo

Right now, you can earn a $150 bank bonus when you open a Huntington Bank’s Asterisk-Free Checking account. Like most bank bonuses, you’ll need to meet the bank’s specific requirements to earn the bonus. For this particular Huntington bonus, you’ll need to:

  • Open a new Asterisk-Free Checking account by July 7, 2021
  • Make cumulative new money deposits of at least $1,000 to your checking account within 60 days of account opening
  • Keep your account open for at least 90 days

Huntington will deposit the $150 bank bonus into your checking account within 14 days of meeting the specified requirements.

Bonus Expiration

To qualify for the bonus, you’ll need to open an eligible checking account by July 7, 2021. You also need to meet the bank bonus deposit requirements within 60 days of account opening.

About Asterisk-Free Checking

Asterisk-Free Checking is a standard checking account available through Huntington Bank. With no monthly fees and no minimum balance requirements, you can bank however you want without extra costs. There’s also no minimum opening deposit requirement, so you can open an account regardless of how much money you have to add. Huntington’s Asterisk-Free Checking comes with access to several tools to help you manage your money.

Automated savings

Money Scout is an automatic savings tool that analyzes your spending habits and upcoming expenses to find unused funds to transfer over to your savings account.

Overdraft protection

Huntington helps you with overdrafts in two ways. First, you have access to a 24-hour grace period that gives you more time to fund your account and avoid costly overdraft fees. You also have access to the $50 Safety Zone, which allows you to have a negative balance (up to $50) for five consecutive days or longer with an extended overdraft fee. It’s good to know Huntington Bank has your back during the moments you need a little extra help.

Digital tools

Huntington Bank’s hub is home to all of the bank’s digital tools. As a checking customer, you have unlimited access to savings and budgeting tools designed to help you set and save for money goals and improve your money management skills.

 Online Bill Pay

Huntington customers have a convenient one-stop-shop for paying bills online. Bill payment is available through your online account or Huntington’s mobile app.

Huntington 5 Checking $200 Bank Bonus

huntington bank promo

Huntington’s other bank bonus offer is for opening a Huntington 5 Checking account. New customers can earn a $200 bank bonus right now by meeting the following requirements:

  • Open a new account by July 7, 2021
  • Make cumulative new money deposits of at least $1,000 to your checking account within 60 days of account opening
  • Keep your account open for at least 90 days

Huntington will deposit the $200 bank bonus into your checking account within 14 days of meeting the specified requirements above. Huntington 5 Checking also comes with a free debit card and check writing privileges, with checks available for a fee.

Bonus Expiration

Like Huntington’s other bonus, customers need to open an eligible checking account by July 7, 2021, and meet the offer’s deposit requirements within 60 days of account opening.

About Huntington 5 Checking

Huntington 5 Checking is an interest-bearing checking account. Besides the bonus offer, the account comes with several valuable benefits.

Free ATM Withdrawals

Customers receive five free non-Huntington ATM withdrawals each month. That means you can still withdraw money without a fee even if you’re aren’t near a Huntington Bank or one of its ATMs. Keep in mind this only waives the fee typically charged by Huntington, not any fees incurred from the ATM owner.

Free Credit Scores

Huntington 5 customers also get access to free VantageScore credit scores each month, along with additional quarterly credit scores.

Digital Tools

Huntington 5 Checking accounts also have access to the bank’s hub of digital tools. That includes Huntington Heads Up, a tool that provides real-time insights and alerts so you can manage your money more effectively. It even keeps track of subscription accounts, so you know when free trials end or when renewals are coming up.

Extended Deposit Hours

Both checking accounts come with access to All Day Deposit, which means the deposit day ends at midnight, not early cutoff times like other banks. One thing to keep in mind is that Huntington 5 Checking comes with a $5 monthly maintenance fee. The fee is waived by keeping a total relationship balance (among select Huntington accounts) of at least $5,000 each statement period.

Who Is Eligible for Huntington Bank Bonuses?

Like most promotional bank offers, you need to know details in the fine print before signing up. First, this promotion is only available to applicants ages 18 and over who live in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania or West Virginia. The bank only operates in these seven states currently.

Theses bank bonus offers are only available to new Huntington personal checking customers. Individuals who have an existing personal checking account with Huntington or have closed one within the last six months are not eligible.

The deposits required for both offers must be funded with new money, which means money that’s not from any existing Huntington account. Transfers from other Huntington accounts don’t count as deposits. Neither do person-to-person payments through third-parties like Zelle. Huntington Bank may limit you to one bank bonus per 12-month period across all accounts.

This offer cannot be used in combination with any other consumer checking offer. Also, your bank bonus may be considered taxable income and should be included in your annual tax return. Huntington will issue you a Form 1099-INT for tax purposes. Unlike many bank bonus offers, there is no requirement to set up a recurring direct deposit with Huntington Bank to earn a bonus.

Other Huntington Bank Accounts

While Asterisk-Free and Huntington 5 Checking are the only accounts currently offering bank bonuses, it doesn’t mean those are the only products provided by the bank. Huntington is also home to other checking accounts, savings accounts, money market accounts and other personal banking solutions.

Like most traditional banks, Huntington can’t compete with online banks’ competitive rates these days. But they still provide a viable local banking solution for many customers. Here’s a brief overview of other account offerings available through the bank.

Huntington 25 Checking

Huntington 25 Checking is the bank’s highest-earning interest-bearing checking account. The account features a steep $25 monthly maintenance fee, but you can waive it by keeping a total relationship balance (among select Huntington accounts) of at least $25,000 each statement period.

The checking account comes with extra perks like free paper checks and unlimited fee-free out-of-network ATM withdrawals (you still have to pay for any fees charged by ATM owners). The real draw of Huntington 25 is the relationship benefits when you pair it with other banking products. Some of the relationship benefits include:

  • Higher interest rates on savings accounts and money market accounts
  • Free credit score and identity monitoring
  • Home Equity Line of Credit rate discount
  • Mortgage rate discount
  • 100 commission-free online equity or ETF trades per year through Huntington Financial Advisors

High Interest Savings Account

High Interest Savings earns moderate to low APY on all balances. You can earn higher relationship rates, with an increased APY, by pairing your savings account with an eligible Huntington checking account. The High Interest Savings account has a $10 monthly fee, which is waived by keeping an average daily balance of $2,500 or pairing it with select checking accounts.

Premier Savings

Premier Savings also earns a moderate to low APY on all balances. This savings account has a $4 monthly maintenance fee, but you can have it waived by keeping an average daily balance of $300 or have an Asterisk-Free checking account.

Relationship Money Market Account

Money markets accounts are like hybrid bank accounts that offer the best features of both savings accounts and checking accounts. The Huntington Relationship Money Market Account comes with check writing privileges and earns interest on all balances above $25,000.

Like most money market accounts, customers are limited to six monthly withdrawals without paying an extra penalty fee. There is a $25 monthly fee on money market accounts which is waived by keeping an average daily balance of at least $25,000 or having a Huntington 5 or Huntington 25 Checking account.

Money Market IRA

Another option for customers who want to maximize their savings, especially for retirement, is the Huntington Money Market IRA. Available as part of a traditional and Roth IRA, this money market account starts to earn interest on balances as low as one cent. The good news is that Money Market IRAs have no monthly fees and enjoy tax benefits other accounts don’t.

Certificates of Deposit (CDs)

Huntington offers standard, jumbo and IRA CDs. CDs are a great way to maximize your savings when you have extra funds you don’t need access to for a while. CDs come in several terms ranging from one month to six years, earning a mid-tier APY. A $1,000 deposit is required to open standard CDs through Huntington.

Jumbo CDs are for beginning balances of $100,000 or greater and range from seven days to 1,825 days. Customers can open a CD account in person at a local Huntington Bank branch.

Other Huntington Products

Beyond its traditional deposit accounts, Huntington also offers lending products like home mortgages, refinance loans, Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOCs), personal loans and auto loans. Huntington also offers personal insurance, including individual health, life and motor vehicle insurance. Add in investment accounts and small business and commercial banking solutions, and you have a bank that is truly a full-service bank dedicated to offering a wide array of helpful products and services to its customers.

Huntington Bank Mobile App

On top of quality banking products and services, Huntington customers have access to the bank’s award-winning mobile banking app. The app comes with many features people have come to love with mobile banking like:

  • Account management
  • Mobile check deposit
  • Online bill pay
  • Zelle compatibility
  • Bank branch and ATM finder
  • Electronic transfers

Available for iOS and Android, the app also comes with some less common features worth checking out. Apple users can access their account balance easily without even logging in using 3D Touch technology.

You can also set up notifications and alerts, so you can stay on top of every bank transaction no matter where you are. Huntington customers also have a choice when logging in, with touch ID, face ID or fingerprint login options available.

The company responded on Twitter Saturday morning explaining there was a conversion error Friday night where debit cards were temporarily unavailable, even though the old TCF debit cards were supposed to be active through Nov. 4th.

For weeks, the billboard sign along St. Paul’s Lafayette Bridge has proclaimed the arrival of Huntington Bank, and it does so in all the wrong ways. “Hello, Minneapolis!” reads the larger-than-life faux pas, which has made more than one St. Paul resident shake their head in disbelief.

The Columbus, Ohio-based financial institution completed its acquisition of smaller TCF Bank in June, cementing TCF’s second merger in as many years, and it’s already come in like a bit of a lion, in more ways than one.

“Classic example of a mistake that folks from out of town would make,” said Highland Park resident Joe Nathan, remarking on the billboard Tuesday on social media.

A spokesman for Huntington Bank forwarded a written statement from Mike Jones, chair of of the bank’s Minnesota division: “It should have never happened. As soon as we realized the mistake, we asked for the billboard to be updated, which should happen within the next few days. We have more than 1,600 colleagues who live in the Twin Cities and respect the rich history of St. Paul. The city will continue to be an important market for Huntington as we transition from TCF.”

NAME, LOGO OF UMN STADIUM CHANGED

In national media, Minnesota’s capital city has long played second fiddle to its larger cousin across the Mississippi River. In 2008, CNN reporters standing outside the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul during the Republican National Convention told the world they were reporting live from Minneapolis, incurring some groans from St. Paul audiences.

But this is different. Unlike national broadcast media, Huntington Bank isn’t just passing through. And until recently, TCF had been a Minnesota-based institution for nearly 100 years.

The combined company has already changed the name and logo of the former TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis to Huntington Bank Stadium.

In a match-up some might call rife with symbolism, Gophers football will face the Ohio State Buckeyes at the newly-rebranded arena at 7 p.m. Thursday. The game will be broadcast nationally on FOX.

MERGERS ARE NOTHING NEW

Huntington Bancshares, Inc. — ranked No. 510 on the Fortune 500 pre-acquisition — completed an all-stock merger with Detroit-based TCF Financial Corp. in June, resulting in a Midwest bank that ranks in the top 25 nationally and top 10 regionally. Huntington, which has plans to expand in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Colorado, will maintain some 80 branches within the Twin Cities metro. No branch is slated to close. TCF’s online customers will access their accounts through a Huntington-branded website beginning in October.

In addition to the everyday consumer services TCF offered in the metro, Huntington plans to launch business banking, middle-market banking (investment banking for companies with more than $50 million in revenues) and wealth management services.

Bank mergers are nothing new, but back-to-back mergers that rebrand and uproot established financial institutions draw added attention. TCF Financial, which was founded in Minneapolis in 1923 as the Twin City Building and Loan Association, had been based in Wayzata until it merged in 2019 with Chemical Bank of Detroitand relocated its headquarters.

The Detroit News reported in June that the company’s commercial banking business will be headquartered at the old TCF headquarters in Detroit, while its holding company and consumer bank will be headquartered in Columbus. Huntington, post-merger, has about $175 billion in assets (Huntington previously had about $120 billion and TCF had about $50 billion), $142 billion in deposits and $113 billion in pod save america listen based on March 31 balances.

WHAT CUSTOMERS NEED TO KNOW

TCF customers will receive a online banking for huntington bank package in the mail from Huntington Bank around now, if they haven’t already. Don’t just toss that out as it may have important information about how to gravitate former TCF accounts into Huntington accounts. That’s a more complicated undertaking than it might appear at first blush. TCF became famous for pioneering free checking in 1986, and Huntington will continue the legacy, on top of online banking for huntington bank paid options.

For instance, Huntington offers three types of checking: “Asterisk-Free” checking with no monthly charges or minimum balances required; the interest-bearing “Huntington 5 Checking,” which carries a $5 monthly fee for balances under $5,000 and allows five free ATM withdrawals from other banks; and the highest-interest “25 Checking,” which carries a $25 monthly fee for balances under $25,000 and allows unlimited free ATM withdrawals from other banks.

Huntington charges overdraft fees, but amazon com promo code gives customers who have overdrawn their checking accounts a 24-hour grace period before the fees kick in, allowing them a chance to come current. It also allows a $50 “safety zone,” so overdrafts of $50 or less don’t incur charges. An account that maintains a negative balance for 60 days will be shut down.

TCF Digital Banking services will not be available as of 7 p.m. Oct. 8. TCF bank branches and other services will be closed Oct. 9-11, and the digital banking app will also be down. Customers may still use debit cards and checks for purchases, and at ATMs.
