Spectrum kept raising my monthly TV and internet bill but wouldn't tell me why

This past weekend, I spent more than an hour on the phone with Spectrum, my internet and cable provider, because my bill was increasing every month without my knowledge for seemingly no reason at all.

I eventually resolved the situation — finding out about a bunch of hidden charges in the process — and even got a discount on my service. But that was only after I insisted on talking to a manager and agreeing to accept slower internet service.

My situation is not unique. The problems I ran into — a lack of transparency about billing practices and a lack of communication about service changes — illustrate just how awful it can be do deal with internet service providers (ISPs) in America. Monthly bills can feel arbitrary, and customers are often left with few choices other than cancelling their service. And even that's not much of a solution, since most Americans have few choices when it aub stock to internet providers.

I've been a Time Warner Cable customer for as long as I've lived in New York City. When it comes to competition, we actually have a decent situation here. When my fiancée and I moved apartments last year, we had Time Warner Cable install our cable TV and internet service the day we moved in. For 200Mbps download speeds and a limited cable package, TWC told us we'd pay $120 for the first year of service. After that, the price would increase, although TWC didn't say by how much. This billing practice — giving customers a flat rate for a year before increasing the price — is typical among internet service providers, and we were totally fine with it.

After our first year of service ended, we saw our bill increase by $10, to $130 a month. We considered switching ISPs, but Spectrum (formerly Time Warner Cable) was still our cheapest option for both cable and internet. And since we had expected the bill change after the first year, we were OK with a $10 increase.

But the following month — April — our bill unexpectedly jumped another $13 to $143. And then this month, it increased again, this time by $2, to $145.

My fiancée and I called Spectrum the night we got our latest bill. A representative told us what we were paying was "still low" for what we have and said we should expect further price increases.

The rep could not give us a specific timeline for how many months it would take before our bill would stop increasing. But when it was all said and done, our monthly rate would end up being $173 per month, she told us.

We were given no prior notice about these price increases, whether by email, billing statement, or otherwise. Although we agreed to a price increase after the first year of service when we signed up with Time Warner Cable, we didn't agree on having our bill jump every single month.

The Spectrum rep responded by saying the company felt the gradual increases are "easier on customers."

But it didn't feel easier to us. We were concerned that our bill was increasing at an unpredictable rate for seemingly no reason — we hadn't changed our service — and we wanted to know why. So I asked to speak to a manager. 

We were quickly transferred to Spectrum's retention center, where we spoke to a woman named Esmy. After listening to our concerns, Esmy explained that when we signed up for service, Time Warner Cable made our first year's bills cheaper by applying a bunch of individual discounts. Those discounts were now expiring one by one, which was causing the fluctuating price increases each month.

It was good to have that explanation, but it was baffling. As I explained to Esmy, we had received no information about these particular discounts. Our statements didn't say what discounts we were receiving, how they were applied, or when they expired.  

After a long twc spectrum bill pay, Esmy eventually offered us a deal. We'd get a lower monthly rate than we paid in our first year, but we'd have to accept slower internet service. Instead of 200Mbps speeds, we'd get 100Mbps, since Spectrum no longer offers a 200Mbps plan.

We decided to take the offer, because the the price was less expensive than what we'd pay one of Spectrum's rivals. 

But the price we were paying was less important to me than what we had to go through to find out why our bill kept going up. We would have never known what was going on if we hadn't called Spectrum and then insisted on talking to a manager when the customer service rep couldn't answer our questions. It's ridiculous that we had to go that far just to get an explanation for what we were being charged.

And that's not the only example of Spectrum's arbitrary and opaque billing practices. Another comes into play when customers decide to upgrade their internet service, say from 50Mbps to 300Mbps. After making the upgrade, Spectrum will not only charge them a higher rate for the speedier service, but will also apply a one-time $199 fee. When I asked a Spectrum representative about it, the rep couldn't explain the reason behind the fee or why it's so hefty. The rep did confirm, though, that it's not due to any technical change needed for the faster service or the need to install new hardware. It's just the way it is. 

Those kind of arbitrary fees as well as the lack of transparency and predictability that Spectrum has exhibited is bad for customers. Because many subscribers pay their bills through auto-pay, they expect them to be a certain amount each month. When bills suddenly change, it can cause confusion, frustration and undue stress. The lack of a clear explanation for such changes feels unfair and could open the door for predatory practices.

The bottom line is that Spectrum needs to be more transparent. It — and its rivals, which can be just as bad — needs to communicate bills, fees, discounts, and changes to customers' accounts clearly and well in advance of when it sends out its monthly statements.

The Ridiculous $5 Charge On Your Spectrum/Time Warner Cable Bill You Don’t Need And Can Remove Easily!


We recently wrote an article talking about the merger of cable and internet companies Time Warner and Spectrum. In that article, we spoke about an instance where one of our staffers saved over $60 a month on their bill, by simply calling Time Warner. You can read that article here for more information…but this article is how you can save an extra $5 a month by getting rid of a service you are more than likely being charged for and don’t need.

Here is the low down as told by one of our staffers :

I recently switched over to a Spectrum rate plan for my cable and internet services. I had Time Warner cable and new that Spectrum purchased Time Warner, but I did not know that your rate plan was not automatically switched over to (in most cases) a cheaper, better rate plan. When I switched plans, I did have a savings of over $60 per month and gained a faster internet connection in the process.

When I switched plans, I was told to go into my local Time Warner office and pick up a new modem. What I didn’t know, is that on my bill, I was going to acquire a $5 monthly ‘Wireless’ charge for that new modem.

So here is the deal with the $5 charge and how most don’t need this service and should call and have it removed. 

When I got home with my new modem, I plugged it in and hooked it up to my existing wireless router. I quickly noticed that my internet connection was horrible. All the electronics in my home wouldn’t connect to WiFi and if they did, they would drop the connection.

Well, after a bit of research, I realized that the new Spectrum modems (which are the size of a tiny boat anchor) have wireless capabilities built right into the modem. Although this feature is built right into the modem, Spectrum charges a $5 wireless fee on customers bills and they control the shut off option on their end.

So, when I got my modem from the Time Warner location, no one advised me that the modem was going to be shooting a wireless signal once I plugged it in. On top of that, I was not advised about any $5 charge on my bill.

Most everyone in America has some sort of wireless router in their home. When you plug in these new modems to your router and the wireless capability is turned on…there becomes a signal conflict between the wireless signal on your modem and your wireless router. This is what was causing my issue with WiFi at my home.

I went back into Time Warner to speak with them about this situation and there was actually a couple in front of me talking about how they switched to a What was the first national anthem of the united states plan and were supposed to have faster internet, but it wasn’t working well. Well guess what? They were having the same issue I was having. I spoke up and let them know about the ridiculous $5 ‘wireless’ fee and how they need to shut off the wireless feature on the modem and simply continue using their router. If you have a wireless router all ready in your home, you DO NOT need to be paying a $5 wireless fee to Spectrum/Time Warner. Call them and remove that feature. Your internet connection will be faster and stronger the moment the feature is turned off.

Charter Disconnects Some Former TWC Subscribers Mid-Day, Demands More Money

When Charter bought up Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks in 2016, customers who suddenly found themselves paying Charter bills knew they were in for a twc spectrum bill pay big changes. One of those was an inevitable price increase, which for some customers began even before the merger was formally approved or completed. But even though you might expect your cable bill to creep inexorably upward, you probably don’t expect it to happen in the middle of the afternoon with a sudden channel blackout.

The Lexington Herald-Leader talked to several customers in the Lexington, KY, area who were basically blindsided by their surprise Charter price hikes.

It’s no surprise that Charter is raising rates in the former Time Warner Cable footprint. Late last year, the company had to admit in a quarterly earnings update that one-time TWC customers were canceling service with Charter largely due to price increases.

However, at the time Charter CEO Thomas Rutledge doubled down on the need to shift prices up. He called the “legacy pricing” for TWC customers “misplaced,” and said the company needed to move them “in the right direction.”

The way Charter is going about it, however, is somewhat surprising. You would think that they’d be taking the traditional route of simply sending you a higher bill next month for your continued service — but you’d be wrong.

Instead, Charter is keeping some customers’ prices where they are… and cutting service to match. Without notice. In the middle of the day.

One customer the Herald-Leader featured was in the middle of watching a show when suddenly his screen went twc spectrum bill pay. He picked up his remote and changed the channel to find that several other channels from his lineup were also suddenly missing, replaced with a message that said they were no longer a part of his package.

“I thought, ‘What the hell? I just paid the cable bill,’” he told the Herald-Leader. So he called up Charter to find out what was going on.

When he reached a representative, they told him that he wasn’t paying enough for the standard cable package, anymore. If he wanted his channels back, he’d have to start paying $139 every month instead of $103 — an increase of nearly 35%. Oh and P.S., he’d need to pay $24 for a tech to come out and replace his cable box — the one that had been working perfectly well until the moment Charter decided it shouldn’t.

“It was bull crap,” the customer told the paper. “They don’t give us any notice, they just spring it on us in the middle of the month. And then they tell us we’re getting an ‘upgrade.’ This isn’t an upgrade, it’s the same channels we already had!”

The Herald-Leader spoke with other area customers who had the same problem. One lost her service while she was in the middle of watching a March Madness game this spring, and was told that keeping her existing package would cost an extra $45 per month. She cancelled her service instead.

Even a city councilwoman in Lexington got hit, the Herald-Leader reports: Charter told her she’d need to pay an extra $21.50 a month to maintain her twc spectrum bill pay. She tried to cut the landline phone service from her package instead, but was told that cutting her triple-play bundle would make it even more expensive.

“It’s frustrating to the Nth degree. People are calling our offices daily about this,” the city councilwoman said. And Charter is completely not open to negotiation, she added: “With Spectrum, everything falls on deaf ears.”

To Charter, this is “repackaging.” All those Lexington-area customs whose rates suddenly jumped up at once are twc spectrum bill pay of “a recent sweep” of former TWC customer accounts that Charter is bringing in line. And it’s not just Kentucky being affected. reports that customers in New York are seeing huge price increases when their own existing TWC promotional packages expire. One editor for the site saw his own bill go up by 31%, from $122 to $159, the site reports.

Meanwhile, Charter has been promising customers in North Carolina that it won’t cut them off mid-show like it did to their fellow customers in Kentucky. Not, mind you, because Charter realized it’s wrong to do so. Rather, because the technology in North Carolina has already been more recently upgraded and therefore “this situation affecting a small number of customers in Lexington, Kentucky has no relevance for our customers in the Carolinas,” as a Charter spokesman told the Raleigh News & Observer.

  2. They would effectively get themselves a $60,000 after tax raise if she stayed at home. At a minimum, she should seriously consider Investing For time in a business that can be done at home such as freelance web design. They just can't afford to spend that kind of money with her not drawing the salary. When I started my business, I had the blessing of living with my parents for the first 1.5 years and still have no children. By year one, it was paying enough to move out with my now wife and we moved 4 months later.
