Post office Boxes (to be used after you arrive to campus)

To receive United States Postal Service (USPS) mail on campus, all students are required to have a U. S. Post Office Box. You can rent your U.S. Post Office Box by going to PO Boxes page on the USPS website. You cannot ship your items to the US post office until you activate your post office box number. Packages mailed to 250 Church Street must have a scannable bar code. All other packages without a scannable bar code, will be returned to sender. Only packages are accepted, no mail or correspondence will be accepted (including magazines, bank statements, cards and letters).

U. S. mail sent to you at Yale without your Post Office Box number or the Yale Station street address will be subject to delay in delivery, and in some cases will be returned to the sender. There is no direct delivery by U. S. mail to Yale buildings, so do not include the street address of your residential college or dormitory on packages sent by U. S. mail. All packages addressed to colleges or dorms, will be sent back to sender.

To ensure that US mail can be addressed and delivered to students living on-campus, Yale’s existing policy requiring students to establish a PO Box and mailing address at Yale Station remains in effect. The temporary practice of Campus Mail delivering student US Mail to each residential college office will be discontinued. Taxpayers who would normally be scrambling to get their returns finished by Tax Day got a little more breathing room again this year. The IRS originally vowed that there would be no repeat of last year’s Tax Day extension, and although procrastinators don’t have three extra months to get it together like they did last year, the IRS eventually relented and moved the deadline for filing your 2020 tax returns from April 15 to May 17.

If you miss the new deadline without securing an extension, you should expect no mercy from the IRS — fines, penalties, interest, and scary letters will be the backdrop to your first semi-normal summer. Also, keep in mind that this extension applies to federal returns only. Your state may or may not be so generous.

Here’s what you need to know.

Your Local Post Office Might be Open Late… If You Need It

There was a time when rushing to the post office late at night on Tax Day for a hand-stamped postmark that proved you beat the clock was an annual American ritual. Now, the era of people scrambling to snail-mail their taxes at the 11th hour is largely in the past. 

The Internet, it turns out, is starting to catch on. 

Some post offices still extend their hours on Tax Day, but many others do not. In the cases that they do, it’s unlikely to be midnight, as was standard in the bad old days of stamp licking. 

If you live in an outpost without reliable broadband Internet, or if you just don’t trust something you didn’t fold and put in an envelope, consider the following tips. They could save you a bunch of headaches when you drive to the post office to mail your taxes. 

  • Pay attention to collection hours. Collection hours aren’t always the same as closing hours and could affect your tax-filing postmark deadline. Just because a post office is open late doesn’t mean it’s still collecting mail for that day.
  • Know your post office’s last collection time. A post office’s last collection is the time at which the mail is taken for the last period that day — and when it’s actually postmarked. For example, if your post office is open until 9 p.m. on Tax Day 2021, but the last collection time is 7 p.m., you’ll need to get to the post office to mail your taxes before 7 p.m. to meet the May 17 tax postmark deadline. Otherwise, your taxes will be mailed out on May 18.
  • Watch out for common tax-filing mistakes. Errors might range from using the wrong amount of postage or writing the wrong address to not including all necessary forms. If you’re still worried about making that May 17 deadline, you might still be able to file for a tax extension. It’s fairly simple, and most filers qualify for a tax extension.
  • Most taxpayers will have to file returns with their states as well. You can find this information by checking with your state tax agency to confirm the deadline.
  • You can call the USPS directly. Reach it at 800-ASK-USPS (800-275-8777) for detailed information about post office extended hours on Tax Day 2021, collection boxes and mail pickups in your area.
  • You can call the IRS directly. Reach it at 800-829-1040 if you have any questions on how to file your tax return, or about your tax refund.

Or, consider filing online. It’s easier, more secure, gets you your refund more quickly, and the IRS prefers it. It prefers it so much, in fact, that you can file right through the IRS website. You can even do it for free, and depending on your income, you can do it for free with a full-service experience that you would pay for elsewhere.

Submit Your Returns at No Cost With Free File

The IRS’ Free File service does just what the name implies — lets you file your taxes for free, depending on your adjusted gross income. There are two options:

  • $72,000 or less: You can file your federal taxes for free on a third-party IRS partner site. You can even file your state taxes for free with some partners. There’s nothing to fear — you don’t even have to do any math. You’ll receive guided preparation that will ask you questions and walk you through it, just like on a pay site.
  • Above $72,000: You can still file for free, but only your federal returns, and the service is pretty bare bones. It offers only the most basic guidance and calculations, and you’ll have to know how to prepare tax forms. Plus, math. 

You’ll need all the same stuff that’s required no matter how you file, like health insurance and mortgage statements, last year’s AGI, your W2s, 1099s, Social Security benefits, and proof of any other income, including unemployment payments. Remember, file on time even if you can’t pay your bill. You can request an extension by Tax Day if you need more time to file, but remember that this just a grace period. You won’t pay any less. Paying your taxes is never fun — but in 2021, it shouldn’t require a trip to the post office.

What Are the Days USPS Does Not Deliver?

Speaking of Priority Mail Express service commitments: you can view the time your express package will be delivered by when you check the service commitments on USPS’ website. If USPS doesn’t get your parcel to its final destination by the time of their service commitment, you’ll be eligible to get a refund for the cost of your Priority Mail Express postage!

So…What About Sunday Delivery?

This is where things get a little bit tricky. It’s true that USPS doesn’t deliver the mail on Sundays. However, package delivery is another story. As part of the last mile delivery partner program, USPS has begun to deliver parcels on Sundays for other carriers. For example, USPS recently began delivering parcels on Sunday for UPS.

Mail delivery and postal operations will continue Friday despite the designation of Juneteenth, a new federal holiday.

The U.S. Postal Service announced mail delivery and other operations will continue Friday and Saturday despite the new Juneteenth federal holiday. President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth bill late Thursday and federal offices will be closed Friday, ahead of the official holiday on June 19.

“The U.S. Postal Service is fully supportive of the new Juneteenth National Independence Day Act and making June 19 a federal holiday. Unfortunately, it is not possible to cease the operations of the Postal Service to accommodate an observance over the next 24-48 hours,” the postal service said in a statement to USA Today.

“We are part of the nation’s critical infrastructure and our customers are relying on us to deliver our essential services. Closing down our operations without providing appropriate time would lead to operational disruptions and be a disservice to our customers and those who rely upon us. For that reason, the Postal Service will be operating on June 18 and 19, 2021, on a normal schedule, serving our customers to the best of our ability.”

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks the day in 1865 that announcement was made that tens of thousands of African-Americans in Texas has been emancipated, closing the door on one of the last chapters of slavery in the U.S.

Juneteenth becomes the first federal holiday established by Congress since 1983 when Martin Luther King Jr. Day was created.

You will receive an email when your UPS, DHL, USPS, Fed Ex or Amazon package is scanned at Yale Student Receiving Center. Due to limited space, please pick up your package(s) within 24 hours after you arrive to campus. Unclaimed packages will be returned to sender.

Mail Delivery

Post office Boxes (to be used after you arrive to campus)

To receive United States Postal Service (USPS) mail on campus, all students are required to have a U. S. Post Office Box. You can rent your U.S. Post Office Box by going to PO Boxes page on the USPS website. You cannot ship your items to the US post office until you activate your post office box number. Packages mailed to 250 Church Street must have a scannable bar code. All other packages without a scannable bar code, will be returned to sender. Only packages are accepted, no mail or correspondence will be accepted (including magazines, bank statements, cards and letters).

U. S. mail sent to you at Yale without your Post Office Box number or the Yale Station street address will be subject to delay in delivery, and in some cases will be returned to the sender. There is no direct delivery by U. S. mail to Yale buildings, so do not include the street address of your residential college or dormitory on packages sent by U. S. mail. All packages addressed to colleges or dorms, will be sent back to sender.

To ensure that US mail can be addressed and delivered to students living on-campus, Yale’s existing policy requiring students to establish a PO Box and mailing address at Yale Station remains in effect. The temporary practice of Campus Mail delivering student US Mail to each residential college office will be discontinued. Starting October 1, 2019, misaddressed US Mail will be returned to sender. Exceptions will be made for voting ballots, passports, and jury duty notices, which on-campus students without PO Boxes can address to themselves at their residential college office address, for delivery by Campus Mail.

Avoid Lost or Delayed Mail

All letters and packages to your Post Office Box should be addressed according to the following sample:

Students may not address their Priority/Certified mail to 250 Church Street nor their affiliated college. All Priority/Certified mail for students must be addressed to the student’s PO Box number, otherwise it will be returned to sender.

Letters and packages sent by U. S. mail can be picked up at the Yale Station post office, 206 Elm Street, during regular operating hours.

P.O. Boxes and Summer Break

Any student who is going to receive mail or packages while at Yale, must use their U.S. Post Office box. No mail should be addressed to your residential college. Using a Yale Station P.O. Box guarantees that letters and packages, including UPS and FedEx, will get to one location without delay. If you do not have a box, visit Yale Station today and sign up for one. During your time at Yale, you will keep the same box number.

Before summer break, be sure to empty the P.O. Box and submit a Change of Address Card to Yale Station, 206 Elm Street, New Haven, CT 06520.

Graduating Seniors Take Note

After Commencement and before you leave for home, please be sure your post office box has been emptied and submit a Change of Address card to Yale Station, 206 Elm Street, New Haven, CT 06520.

POST Office branches have remained open throughout the coronavirus crisis as they're considered "essential" businesses.

This is because they provide banking services, ways to collect benefits and pay bills, and letter and parcel sending facilities.

Are Post Offices open today?

Yes, Post Offices have remained open, including during the lockdowns, over the past year.

There are around 11,500 Post Office branches across the UK, the majority of which are run independently or as a franchise arrangement.

What are Post Offices opening times?

Opening times have always varied by branch, with no set hours across the network.

Standalone Post Offices are currently open but hours vary from branch to branch, with closures on Sunday.

For opening hours of other Post Offices, you'll need to check its online branch finder tool.

Hours can change at short notice, so keep an eye on your local branch website for information.

If you pop down to your local Post Office and it's closed, there should be a poster in the window advertising where your nearest open branch is.

What services does the Post Office offer?

As well as sending letters and parcels, you can also use your Post Office to access your high street bank account and make withdrawals, deposits, balance enquiries and more.

Customers can also verify documents via the Post Office's GOV.UK services.

The service was struggling with delays earlier this year, but it's now said to be fully operational.

Post is also still being collected and delivered, although the Royal Mail has previously warned there could be delays to deliveries in some areas due to resourcing issues.

A statement on its website says: "We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week.

"If resourcing issues, associated self-isolation and safety measures prevent this, we’ll deliver at least every other day.

"It’s only in extreme cases – where offices are severely affected by absence levels - that this may not be possible."

To minimise risk, workers will have to stay two metres apart with only one person in a Royal Mail delivery vehicle at any one time.

And to avoid spreading germs on handheld signature devices, postmen and postwomen will instead log the name of the person accepting the item, and sign on their behalf.

Having knocked on the door, parcels will be placed on the doorstep with Royal Mail staff then stepping aside to a safe distance while households retrieve their item.

Boris Johnson's four-step plan to ease lockdown in England finally brought back the long-awaited return of the hospitality industry on April 12.

It came as the first part of the plan rolled out on March 8 when kids returned to classrooms.

The “Rule of Six” was then reinstated on March 29 for gatherings in parks and private gardens - allowing six people from up to six different households to mix outdoors.
