Amazon’s new credit card could backfire on people with bad credit

Like many other retail cards, however, the Amazon Credit Build card can only be used for Amazon purchases, making it a “closed-loop” card.

The structure of the new credit offering struck credit-card experts as rather unusual. “I’ve looked at hundreds of retail cards, and I can’t recall ever seeing a secured retail card,” said Ted Rossman, industry analyst with CreditCards.com.

(Amazon and Synchrony declined to provide additional comments regarding the card on the record.)

Here are other features of the card:

• Amazon Prime members who open the card can receive 5% back on purchases at Amazon.com. The account must be in good standing to redeem the rewards.

• The card has no annual fee — though consumers would need to pay the $119 yearly membership fee for Amazon Prime to get the cash-back reward.

• After making the account-opening deposit, card holders www key bank login receive a $40 gift card.

• Card holders will have access to 0% APR financing options on large purchases.

• On-time payments will be reported to the three major credit bureaus: Experian EXPN,  , Equifax EFX,  and TransUnion TRU, .

•The annual percentage rate for the card currently stands at 28.24% and resets based on the Prime Rate. That’s higher than the average retail card interest, which was 25.64% as of November 2018, according to CreditCards.com.

Amazon is looking to appeal to lower-income consumers

This card is clearly geared toward a different audience than the company’s other credit cards, including the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa V,  , which was released last year.

The Amazon Credit Builder card is explicitly aimed at people with bad credit and those who are new to credit. Amazon has also partnered with TransUnion to create a dashboard through which consumers can monitor their credit score and learn how to use their credit card wisely.

“Secured credit cards are my favorite cards for folks who are getting started with credit or rebuilding it,” said Matt Schulz, chief industry analyst at CompareCards.com. “They’re a great training-wheels card because there’s so little risk involved. After all, with typical credit lines of $200 or $250, there’s only so wild you can go with your spending.”

But Schulz cautioned that because the Credit Builder is a retail card, there are some important potential pitfalls that consumers should be aware of, namely a higher-than-average APR and rewards that may not be as good as the ones offered by general purpose cards.

Consumers will have the can i load a cash app card to upgrade to the Amazon Store Card if their account remains in good standing. Though, not all consumers should necessarily make this move.

“Upgrading the card means getting your security deposit back, so that’s a good thing,” said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate. “But ultimately, whether a card is secured or unsecured, it is how disciplined the cardholder is with their spending and repayment of the balance that determines success or failure in a financial sense.”

To qualify for the upgrade, card holders must make seven consecutive on-time payments over the course of 12 months. Card holders would also need to have a credit file with no recent bankruptcy, foreclosure or delinquency events and a credit score that meet’s Synchrony’s criteria.

The move to offer this card fits in with other efforts Amazon has made to appeal to lower-income consumers, including when the company began charging a lower membership rate for Amazon Prime for consumers who rely on government assistance.

“‘It sets the bad precedent of using a credit card to finance purchases that can’t be paid for in full.’”

— —Bankrate’s Greg McBride on 0% financing offers associated with retail credit cards
The card’s perks may be too good to be true

Many of the perks designed to help this card stand out from other secured credit cards could become double-edged swords.

For starters, Amazon’s choice to offer rewards on the card could easily backfire for consumers. Credit card rewards, however, are almost inherently designed to encourage overspending. Financial experts argue that offering these rewards in turn could promote bad spending habits and make it harder for consumers to build up their credit score.

Moreover, the special financing offers could end up costing consumers big time if they’re not careful. Amazon Credit Builder card holders will have access to two forms of special financing. For purchases of $149 or more, they can apply to receive 0% financing for between six and 24 months.

Consumers can also request “Equal Pay Financing” for purchases of $300 or more, where they will make equal payments each month for a year at 0% APR.

Don’t miss:Ask these questions about your credit card — it could save you hundreds of dollars

Both of these supposed deals have drawbacks. Namely, if consumers don’t pay the full balance off in time, they will be forced to pay interest on the full purchase amount. And with the equal-payments offer, missing john f kennedy presidential library and museum payment could hurt the buyer’s credit score.

“More cards and card issuers are offering the ability to segregate out specific big ticket purchases for special financing arrangements in hopes the card holder will continue to use the card while paying off that big-ticket purchase rather than putting it in a drawer until it gets paid off,” McBride said. “The risk to those who are new to credit or rebuilding credit is that it sets the bad precedent of using a credit card to finance purchases that can’t be paid for in full.”

The card’s high interest rate should also be a major concern to consumers — and can be avoided if they pay the balance in full each month. But that might prove difficult for someone on a tight budget.

Finally, because of its unique structure, the Amazon Credit Builder card comes with one of the major caveats of most retail cards: Consumers can’t use it elsewhere. That makes it potentially less useful than other secured credit cards banks offer, such as the Discover it Secured card DFS,   and Citi Secured Mastercard C,  , which can be used at any number of retailers.

Consumers should approach any retail card with caution, Schulz said, because people often feel pressured into signing up for them, then regret doing so. In fact a 2018 survey by CompareCards found that 47% of people who got store cards were sorry they did.“If you interested in a card, your best move is to say no when it’s offered to you and then read up on the card once you get home,” Schulz said. “If it’s still interesting to you, go ahead and apply the next time you’re in that store. Chances are all the same perks and details will still apply, but you’ll be making a less pressurized, more informed decision.”

Shares of Amazon are up 11.3% over the last three months. Comparatively, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,  and S&P 500 SPX,  are up only 2.1% and 4.75% respectively over that same period of time.

Scammers are calling people and using the names of two companies everyone knows, Apple and Amazon, to rip people off. Here’s what you need to know about these calls.

In one version of the scam, you get a call and a recorded message that says it’s Amazon. The message says there’s something wrong with your account. It could be a suspicious purchase, a lost package, or an order they can’t fulfill.

In another twist on the scam, you get a recorded message that says there’s been suspicious activity in your Apple iCloud account. In fact, they say your account may have been breached.

In both scenarios, the scammers say you can conveniently press 1 to speak with someone (how nice of them!). Or they give you a phone number to call. Don’t do either. It’s a scam. They’re trying to steal your personal information, like your account password or your credit card number.

If you get an unexpected call or message about a problem with any of your accounts, hang up.

  • Do not press 1 to speak with customer support
  • Do not call a phone number they gave you
  • Do not give out your personal information

If you think there may actually be a problem with one of your accounts, contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real.

Read our article to learn how to block unwanted calls on a mobile phone or on your home phone. And if you do get a call you think is a scam, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

AARP helpline confirms rise

This year, Amazon scams originating from robocalls, texts and emails have been among the top five complaints to AARP's Fraud Watch Network helpline (877-908-3360 toll-free). “Consumer reliance on delivery services such as Amazon during the pandemic has created an environment where Amazon-related scams are now almost as prevalent as some government impostor scams,” says Mark Fetterhoff, a helpline official.

The Amazon-scam robocalls tend to start with someone saying there has been suspicious activity on your account, and then he asks you to press 1 or call another phone number. Next, the scammer may ask for your Amazon account information. Or he may ask to help you by taking over control of your computer via software that lets him gain access to your credit card, banking and other sensitive information — so he can steal your identity and your money.

When call volume soars like this, it suggests the scams are working, Quilici says. “It becomes a trend, and criminals are like everybody else: They'll jump on the latest trend.”

One tip-off to a scamming robocall is the use of incorrect grammar or stilted wording, because the calls often don't originate from countries with native English speakers, he adds.

Amazon acknowledges problem

Amazon, for its part, says it is aware that scammers are using the company name to defraud people. It advises consumers to report the matter to the company and to the Federal Trade Commission.

"These bad actors are misusing our brand to deceive the public, and we will hold them accountable,” Kathryn Sheehan, Amazon's vice president of business conduct and ethics, said in a statement urging consumers to be vigilant “no matter where they shop."

Amazon just sued some marketers who were allegedly sending fraudulent text messages, pretending to be the company, to drive traffic to online sites selling products and services not related to Amazon. These scammers, who promise rewards for filling out fake surveys, are paid fees for driving traffic to certain merchants.

Another tip from Amazon: While some of its departments call customers, the retailer will never ask you to disclose or verify sensitive personal information or offer a refund that you do not expect. Amazon suggests protecting your online account with a two-step verification system.

The best advice, says Quilici of YouMail, is not to trust that any incoming calls are coming from the number showing on your caller ID. If you aren't sure, hang up and log on to your account to find the company's customer service number, he adds.

The % back benefit cannot be combined with any special financing or equal monthly payments offer. You will have the option to apply the applicable % back benefit (if available) or the longest available equal monthly payments or special financing offer(s) displayed during checkout to your purchase. If your default benefit is equal monthly payments or special financing, and multiple equal monthly payments or special financing offers are available for a specific purchase, the equal monthly payments or special financing offer, as applicable, with the longest available promotion length will apply. If no change is made during the checkout process, and your default benefit is available for your purchase, your default benefit will be applied to your purchase.

7. % Back Benefit. All purchases (less returns and other credits) to which the % back benefit applies will result in your receiving rewards points equal to the applicable % of such purchases on your Amazon Store Card or Secured Card, as the case may be, except as provided below. We may, from time to time at our discretion, supplement the % back benefit by offering bonus rewards points for certain purchases. In such cases, the total rewards points offered for such purchases will be noted on the relevant product page or during checkout, and this section will apply to the % back benefit inclusive of any bonus rewards points. The % back benefit cannot be combined with any special financing or equal monthly payments offer; you will have the option to apply either (a) any available special financing or equal monthly payments offer or (b) the % back benefit, but not both, to your purchase. If no selection is made during the checkout process, your default option will be applied to your purchase, provided such default option is available. The % back benefit is the default option for all purchases of less than $150. We reserve the right to remove any person from the % back benefit in the event of any fraud or abuse in connection with the benefit. We reserve the right to discontinue or alter the terms of the % back benefit at any time.

8. Rewards Points and Redemption. You may see rewards points referred to simply as rewards and reflected as a dollar balance (versus a points balance), with $1 of rewards being equivalent to 1 rewards point. You may redeem your rewards points for eligible purchases at Amazon.com. Alternatively, you may also elect to either (a) redeem your rewards points as a one-time statement credit or (b) automatically redeem your available rewards points balance as a statement credit at the end of each subsequent billing cycle, in each case by visiting your Synchrony Bank online account management page (www.syncbank.com/amazon) or by directly contacting Synchrony Bank. Your Amazon Store Card or Secured Card account must be open and in good standing to redeem rewards points and at the time any statement credit is posted to that account. If your Amazon Store Card or Secured Card account is closed, you will forfeit any unredeemed rewards points. Please allow up to two billing cycles (a) for your earned rewards points to be credited to your Amazon Store Card or Secured Card account and (b) if you elect to redeem your rewards points as a statement credit, for such statement credit to be applied to your Amazon Store Card or Secured Card account. If any of the products related to your original order are returned, subject to Amazon’s returns and refunds policies, you will receive any refund due to you by first refunding the amount charged to your card and, if any refund is still due, then by the return of rewards points. If a refund of your rewards points cannot be processed by Synchrony Bank for reasons including, but not limited to, closure of your Amazon Store Card or Secured Card account, then Amazon will issue an Amazon Gift Card to you for an amount equal to the value of the rewards points used towards your returned purchase. If you return a purchase made with rewards points, allow up to 5 days for the value of the rewards points redeemed to be credited back to your account.

Phone number for amazon prime credit card -

What you should know about the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card

No annual fee … sort of

Technically, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card doesn’t have an annual fee, which is a good thing for cardholders who want to save money. But there’s a catch: You must be an Amazon Prime member to apply for the card, and that costs $119 per year (or $12.99 per month) for a nonstudent membership.

Of course, that $119 goes toward more than just maintaining your card each year. Amazon Prime benefits include free shipping, Prime Video and additional savings at Whole Foods Market, along with a long list of other perks.

If you’re already an Amazon Prime member, then the cost isn’t a concern. But if you’re considering signing up just so that you can apply for the card, think about the cost carefully — you’d have to spend more than $2,380 at Amazon.com or Whole Foods each year to offset the $119 annual Prime membership fee. A different cash back card with a lower annual fee (or a cash back card with no annual fee at all) might make more sense (and cents!).

Cardholders who cancel their Amazon Prime membership can keep the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card, but they earn 3% back, instead of 5%, on Amazon.com and Whole Foods purchases.

You can earn a lot of rewards

The number of points you can earn with the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card depends on where you shop.

  • 5% back on purchases at Amazon.com and Whole Foods
  • 2% back on purchases at gas stations, restaurants and drugstores
  • 1% back on all other purchases

You can then redeem those rewards toward an eligible purchase on Amazon.com. But it’s worth noting that you have other options for redemption, like cash back, gift cards and travel. In these cases, $1 of rewards is equal to 100 rewards points, and vice-versa.

In other words, you can get the same value out of this card with cash back as you could with eligible Amazon.com purchases. That makes this card more versatile than many store-branded credit cards, which usually require that you use your rewards only at the store and its affiliates.

Similarly, while other cards offer 5% cash back on purchases, they may switch which stores or categories you’ll earn with throughout the year and limit how much you can earn.

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card offers unlimited earning potential. Plus Amazon sells a wide variety of products — there’s a reason it’s sometimes called “The Everything Store.” And though it’s not called out specifically on Amazon, you may even be able to get 5% back when purchasing gift cards for businesses other than Amazon or Whole Foods through Amazon.com.

You can use this card anywhere Visa is accepted

Some store-branded or retail credit cards are only accepted at the associated store, and possibly with other affiliated brands.

But you can use the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card for purchases anywhere that Visa is accepted.

A potentially high APR could cost you

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card has a variable APR of 14.24% to 22.24% on purchases and balance transfers.

A high APR isn’t a concern if you pay your bill on time and in full each month. But if you carry a balance, then you might wind up paying a lot in interest. We don’t recommend using credit cards for purchases you can’t afford to pay off by your due date, but the APR is still a consideration if you have to cover emergency expenses that don’t easily fit into your budget.

There are a few more details that might help you decide if the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is a good fit for you.

There are other Amazon credit cards out there

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card isn’t the only Amazon card — there are several choices you can consider.

  • Amazon.com Store Card
  • Amazon Prime Store Card
  • Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card
  • Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card

You can only use the two store cards on Amazon.com.

The other Amazon Visa card is similar to the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card in that you can use it elsewhere, but it doesn’t require an Amazon Prime membership. It also only gives you 3% back at Amazon.com and Whole Foods.

Also, know that you’ll be considered only for the card you apply for, so be sure to apply directly for the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card if that’s the card you want.

Part of an Amazon Household with Prime? You might still qualify.

Even if you’re not the main Prime accountholder, you might qualify if you have Prime benefits that someone shares with you via an Amazon Household (which allows you to share Prime benefits between members of the same household, including up to two adults, four teens and four children). This could lower the card’s “annual fee” for you, depending on if (and how much) you contribute to that Prime membership fee.

Don’t unlink your card from your Amazon.com account

If you choose to remove the card from your Amazon account, you’ll no longer earn 5% back on Amazon or Whole Foods Market purchases. You can relink the card to get the higher rate back, though.

Get rewarded for your purchases Compare Cash Back Cards

Understanding your points and redemption options

We’ve touched on earning points with the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card — now let’s take a look at how you can use your points. The good news is that there are lots of options here, as well.

On Amazon.com, you can redeem your points to pay for part or all of your eligible purchase.

To use your points at Amazon.com, select the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card as your payment method when checking out. You can then choose the dollar amount you want to cover using your points. Using your points this way gets you a redemption value of $1 per 100 points.

You can also redeem your points for cash back, gift cards or travel. The redemption value may vary for other types of redemptions, but 100 points also equals $1 for Amazon.com, travel, gift cards and cash back.

Who is this card good for?

If you do most of your household shopping on Amazon.com and grocery shopping at Whole Foods, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card could be a match.

Even if you only occasionally shop at these stores but tend to make large purchases when you do (like doing all your holiday shopping on Amazon.com), it could still make sense to get the card, because it technically doesn’t have an annual fee. Plus, the 2% back at gas stations, restaurants and drugstores might cover a lot of your other everyday purchases.

But the rewards probably won’t be worth it if you don’t think you’d get much use out of an Amazon Prime membership or you’d wind up carrying a balance from month to month. Make sure you can afford to pay off your card on time and in full each month, and don’t get tempted to make more (or costlier) purchases just because you’ll earn bonus points.

While there isn’t a foreign transaction fee, you also won’t earn a higher rewards rate on travel-related purchases with the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card. It might make sense to keep a travel rewards credit card in your wallet for when you’re booking travel or you’re away from home.

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card isn’t a perfect fit for everyone. If you’re looking for a new card but haven’t fallen in love yet, take a look at these other options.

• After making the account-opening deposit, card holders will receive a $40 gift card.

Consumers will have the option to upgrade to the Amazon Store Card if their account remains in good standing.

Also see:Here’s everything Apple isn’t telling you about its new credit card

And with the equal-payments offer, missing a payment could hurt the buyer’s credit score.
