United Airlines unveils 8 new long-haul routes for summer 2022

Despite the pandemic, United Airlines is gearing up for its largest-ever transatlantic expansion.

The Chicago-based carrier on Thursday unveiled a whopping eight new long-haul flights, including five new transatlantic pins to its route map. Additionally, the carrier is adding frequencies to two other international routes and will move forward with plans to launch seven international flights that were originally postponed due to the pandemic.

We’ll recap the details below, but the storyline here is clear: United is making a big play for leisure flyers who are looking for convenient access to popular, and up and coming European cities.

“It’s more than a single moment in history,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of international network and alliance, during a media briefing about the announcement. “We are affirming our position as the flag carrier of the U.S. We want everyone to be jazzed up about traveling to these exciting destinations,” he added.

All flights (except Amman) are available for purchase as of 8 a.m. Eastern time on Thursday, Oct. 14.

5 new European destinations

Business travel is still down considerably compared to 2019 levels. Historically, when faced with a choice to grow the network, United might’ve just opted to add frequencies on some of its busiest corporate travel routes, like Newark to London.

But this expansion isn’t about catering to the business traveler. As Quayle put it, United will fly to “new, unexpected places in the year to come,” making United the ideal choice for a leisure traveler planning a summer adventure.

Amman, Jordan

United will add nonstop service between Washington/Dulles (IAD) and Amman, Jordan (AMM), beginning on May 5. Flights will operate three times weekly aboard a 243-seat Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

Adding flights to Jordan might have some industry observers scratching their heads. United will be the only U.S. carrier to fly there, joining flag carrier Royal Jordanian from New York, Chicago and Detroit. (Delta last flew there in 2011 and has since scrapped its flights, according to Cirium schedules.)

Quayle explained that the country has “a strong economy. They have natural ties to the U.S., and there are tons of tourism opportunities.”

Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal

While the Azores have plenty of beaches on offer, getting there has historically been challenging for Americans.

That’s about to change on May 13, when United launches daily nonstop flights there from its Newark hub. At 2,576 miles, the airline will fly its fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX 8, the newest airplane in the fleet, for the six-hour flight.

Notably, this aircraft features United’s new signature domestic interior with seat-back entertainment, Bluetooth connectivity and other improvements. The only thing missing is lie-flat pods in the business-class cabin.

Delta was the last U.S. carrier to fly to Ponta Delgada in September 2019, with daily seasonal flights from New York-JFK, while Azores Airlines continues to operate year-round service from Boston.

Bergen, Norway

Like the Azores, getting directly to Norway’s fjords and natural landscape hasn’t been easy for Americans. United’s pulling out all the stops though with its new three times weekly flights from Newark to Bergen (BGO) launching on May 20.

Service will be available on the airline’s 176-seat Boeing 757-200, with 16 lie-flat business-class pods and 160 coach seats.

Getting to Norway’s capital (Oslo) has been much easier, with flights from various points nationwide aboard SAS and the now-downsized Norwegian Air Shuttle. In fact, United even served Oslo as recently as September 2016, according to Cirium schedules.

But Bergen hasn’t seen direct flights from the U.S. since Norwegian’s service from Stewart Airport (SWF) near New York in October 2018.

Palma de Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain

United will fly three times weekly flights between Newark and Palma de Mallorca (PMI) starting on June 3. This will be the first and only flight between the U.S. and Mallorca and will add to United’s existing service to Madrid and Barcelona.

Service will be operated by one of United’s “standard” Boeing 767-300ERs (as opposed to the premium “high-J” variant). During the media briefing, Quayle confirmed that all of these jets should be retrofitted with the lie-flat Polaris pods by the time this new route launches.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

United is doubling down on Spanish leisure hotspots. In addition to new flights to Mallorca, the airline will also add a new route-map pin in the country’s Canary Islands.

Three-times weekly service from Newark to Tenerife launches on June 9 aboard a Boeing 757-200.

5 new routes to existing cities

United isn’t just adding pins to its route map; it’s also boosting service to a handful of existing destinations, as follows:

New daily routes

  • Denver (DEN) and Munich (MUC)
  • Chicago (ORD) and Milan (MXP)
  • Washington/Dulles (IAD) and Berlin (BER)

Additional frequencies

  • Second daily flight between Newark (EWR) and Dublin (DUB)
  • Second daily flight between Newark (EWR) and Rome (FCO)

Of these new flights, perhaps the most interesting are the ones to Germany and Italy.

Munich will be United’s third transatlantic city served from Denver, joining London and Frankfurt. Interestingly, it’ll join service to Munich by the airline’s Star Alliance and transatlantic joint venture partner, Lufthansa. It remains to be seen if Lufthansa will continue operating its own Munich route, or if it’ll cede the market to United.

Meanwhile, in Italy, the national flag carrier Alitalia is being replaced by a new airline, dubbed ITA. It remains to be seen if ITA will eventually pick up all of Alitalia’s transatlantic service, but United is quickly picking up the slack created during the transition period.

7 route resumptions

Due to the pandemic, United had postponed plans to start some of its previously announced long-haul routes. Now that vaccination rates are growing worldwide and border restrictions are easing, the airline is ready to put them on sale once again.

The following seven routes will commence in early 2022, as follows:

  • Los Angeles (LAX), Newark (EWR) and Washington/Dulles (IAD) to Tokyo-Haneda (HND) by March 26
  • Chicago (ORD) and Zurich (ZRH) on April 23
  • Newark (EWR) and Frankfurt (FRA) on April 23 (second daily flight)
  • Newark (EWR) and Nice (NCE) on April 29
  • San Francisco (SFO) and Bangalore, India (BLR) on May 26

The Northeast is the big winner

While there are many themes at play in United’s big transatlantic push, the real winners, at least in the U.S., are the airline’s Northeast hubs in Newark and Washington-Dulles.

These two airports are historically transatlantic gateways, and with an expansion across the Atlantic Ocean, they’re the big winners in Thursday’s announcement.

United will likely continue rebuilding its domestic network at Newark and Washington-Dulles for additional connectivity for the new flights.

On the flip side, United’s West Coast presence in Los Angeles and San Francisco isn’t faring as well. These hubs have traditionally been the airline’s gateway to the Pacific, and with tight border restrictions still in place, they aren’t getting nearly as much love as their East Coast rivals.

Bottom line

By adding nonstop flights to previously hard-to-reach destinations, United’s seemingly banking on a continued strong recovery in its international network.

The summer 2022 routes are “opportunistic,” as Quayle described it. With an eight-month lead time, it’s anyone’s guess how they’ll fare, and whether any will return in the future.

One thing is certain, however, United hit some home runs this year with its last-minute additions to Croatia, Greece and Iceland, so the odds are in the airline’s favor.

Editor’s note: This post has been corrected to show United is adding eight new long-haul routes.

In late May, Maria Gatchalian was still hoping to vacation in Greece in July with her family. But United Airlines had already canceled their nonstop and put them on a connecting flight on another airline — without notice. After Gatchalian accidentally discovered the surprising news, things went from bad to worse. When she tried to cancel the trip, United Airlines told her she would need to make any changes through Lufthansa.

With nearly $5,000 at stake, Gatchalian wants to know if United Airlines can really arbitrarily put her family on another airline and then refuse to assist further.

Elliott Advocacy is underwritten by Travel Insured International -- Travel Insured International is a leading travel insurance provider. For over 25 years, their goal has been to help each individual travel confidently. Some of the major travel insurance benefits provided by in their plans include Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Accident and Sickness Medical Expense, and Baggage and Personal Effects coverage. Plans also include other non-insurance assistance services. In 2015, Travel Insured was acquired by Crum & Forster, whose parent company is Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. The financial strength and core values of the companies give Travel Insured the best position in the market to continue its commitment of helping individuals protect their travel plans. Travel Relaxed…Travel Secure…When you have Travel Insured.

The airline shenanigans continue. This tale is another example of an airline putting its bottom line before its passengers during the coronavirus pandemic. United Airlines hoped the Gatchalians didn’t know the regulations that protect travelers when an airline cancels a flight. Unfortunately for United, Gatchalian is a regular reader of this site — and she knew.

Hoping to be on our way to Greece to celebrate

Early this year, the Gatchalians asked their daughter Kristin if she would like to celebrate her Sweet 16 with a big party or a special family vacation. If she chose option number two, she could also invite a friend. Kristin mulled it over and soon decided on a summer adventure.

“We thought it would be a great way to celebrate Kristin’s birthday,” Gatchalian recalled. “She was sold on the idea when we told her that she could bring Amelie.”

Full disclosure: Kristin is one of my youngest daughter’s best friends. So Amelie was soon included in the family vacation. The group excitedly made all the arrangements to visit Athens and Santorini. And for the next several months the girls busied themselves with planning their wardrobe and activities for their big trip.

Then came March — and the coronavirus entered the picture. That’s when a dark cloud began to roll over the girls’ hopes for the summer trip to Greece. United Airlines had not canceled the nonstop flight from Newark to Athens — yet. But with each passing day, it seemed more unlikely that the trip would happen.

United Airlines: Have your plans changed? Do you want to cancel your flight?

In April, United Airlines sent an email to the family asking if their plans had changed. If so, the message went on to say, they could cancel their United Airlines flight without penalty. The group would receive a future flight credit, good for two years.

The communication didn’t mention whether the coronavirus would cause United Airlines to cancel the flight, or if it already had canceled. But the email certainly read as if the airline was providing a unique opportunity for the family.

United Airlines’ email didn’t surprise Gatchalian. She had already read several articles on the Elliott Advocacy site, warning travelers against canceling flights too soon. In fact, she had been expecting this form letter, which meant to entice passengers into canceling their flights before the pandemic forced United Airlines to do so.

Gatchalian wasn’t going to fall for it. Besides, she still hoped the coronavirus might recede by July. There was still a chance they might soon be relaxing on the beach in Greece, celebrating Kristin’s Sweet 16.

Gatchalian disregarded United’s attempt to get her to cancel the flight. But it seems that the airline had one more trick up its sleeve.

We’ve “modified” your flight

As our founder Christopher Elliott reported recently in the Washington Post, some travel began to resume in mid-May  — although with anxiety. The girls started to be a bit optimistic that the trip was still on.

But it wasn’t to be.

“Michelle, I just signed into our United Airlines account, and it looks like the airline canceled our flight,” Gatchalian told me. “But it says modified (not canceled), and United Airlines seems to have put us on another airline — Lufthansa. Can they do that?”

When I looked at the new flight, it bore no resemblance to the original itinerary the family had booked. Now, instead of a 9-hour nonstop flight from Newark to Athens, United Airlines had put them on a Lufthansa flight. That itinerary had a connection in Germany and added over 7 hours of traveling time. Not exactly what the family had in mind for their summer vacation to Greece.

Trying to cancel and request a refund

The Gatchalians made a decision: Greece was not in their future for this summer. But now a different dilemma faced them. United Airlines provided no way to reject the new flight on Lufthansa. In fact, when Gatchalian tried to cancel and request a refund, she found no tool in her account to do so.

The message said that if she wanted to cancel, she would need to contact her carrier. Her carrier was United Airlines — but the information in her account now indicated that Lufthansa was their carrier. This, even though the Gatchalians had never had any contract or agreement with Lufthansa. And unfortunately, our team knows that more and more European airlines are opting only to provide vouchers during the coronavirus crisis. This is true even when the airline cancels the passenger’s flight.

In fact, many European countries have even enacted temporary regulations that allow for this practice. So I knew the Gatchalians needed to be able to fix this problem with United Airlines — not Lufthansa.

It was time to find out from United Airlines what was going on here.

United Airlines put these passengers on another airline on a flight they don’t want

I reached out to our contact at United Airlines to find out how the airline unilaterally put this family on another airline and then seemed to reject all responsibility.

I have another strange United Airlines case here. Aris Gatchalian had a nonstop flight scheduled on United for July 8 from Newark to Athens. United Airlines has now changed the itinerary to a connecting flight on Lufthansa through Germany. The family does not want this new flight, which is quite inconvenient and adds at least 7 hours to their journey one way. They’ve called United to reject this new itinerary and request a refund, and they keep being sent on an endless loop through chatbots and links on your site.

They gave me all their login credentials, and I tried to get the refund processed. There are absolutely no mechanisms that allow for a refund request for this itinerary. The buttons are inoperable — except for the one that says that they must contact Lufthansa to request the cancellation and refund. As you can imagine, the family is a bit aggravated since this reservation had nothing to do with Lufthansa. That is until United Airlines unilaterally canceled their United flight and transferred them to this other itinerary on another carrier.

I’ve now been on a chat hold for an hour hour trying to get their refund processed, and the message that keeps refreshing is, “we’re sorry your request is taking longer than expected.” I’ve also called United and been sent to a refund form that does not work since it seems that now United has transferred the ticket to Lufthansa. Can you help? (Michelle to United Airlines)

And within hours came the good news: Our executive contact at United Airlines confirmed that it would process a full refund.

If United Airlines (or any airline) cancels your flight and puts you on another airline, here’s what to do

  1. Do not click on the accept button
Even if it is the only option, do not click on the “accept” or “proceed” button. When I attempted to process the refund for the Gatchalians, that was the only option on the page. Resist the urge to click on that button to proceed to the next screen. Instead, move on to the next step — keep reading.
  2. Use the Elliott Advocacy contacts curated by our excellent research team
If there is no possible way to reject a new, unacceptable itinerary, make your cancellation request in writing. Our dedicated research team of John Galbraith and Meera Sundram has found key executives in most companies that will make this process simple.
  3. Don’t cancel before the airline does
During these troubling times for the airline industry, the carriers are resisting officially canceling flights until the last moment. Be strong! Resist the urge to cancel too soon. Remember, the airline might be on the verge of canceling your flight. But if you cave first, you’ll only get a future flight credit.
  4. The Department of Transportation rules — if the airline cancels, it owes you a refund
Keep in mind, the Department of Transportation requires an airline to refund a passenger if it cancels the flight. If your airline cancels your flight and puts you on another airline, you’re under no obligation to accept this change. If you’ve reached a brick wall with your airline and you know it owes you a refund, you can file a complaint with the DOT here.
  5. Third-party bookings don’t apply
One last thing to remember: the Department of Transportation enforcement statement applies to tickets purchased directly through the airline. Tickets purchased through third-party booking agents typically come with a variety of restrictions and penalties. This is true even if the airline cancels your flight. Unfortunately, many passengers are finding this out the hard way during our current coronavirus pandemic. It’s always best to book directly with the airline. But if you do choose to use a third-party booking site, do your research. Make sure you understand all of the terms of your ticket purchase — before you confirm the deal. (Michelle Couch-Friedman, Elliott Advocacy)

We’ll recap the details below, but the storyline here is clear: United is making a big united airlines greece phone number for leisure flyers who are looking for convenient access to popular, and up and coming European cities.

Business travel is still down united airlines greece phone number compared to 2019 levels. Historically, when faced with a choice to grow the network, United might’ve just opted to add frequencies on some of its busiest corporate travel routes, like Newark to London.

But this expansion isn’t united airlines greece phone number catering to the business traveler.

(Delta last blackberry key2 software update there in 2011 and has since scrapped its flights, according to Cirium schedules.)

In addition to new flights to Mallorca, the why is caffeine bad for you when your pregnant will also add a new route-map pin in the country’s Canary Islands.

On the flip side, United’s West Coast presence in Los Angeles and San United airlines greece phone number isn’t faring as well.
