CCleaner

Suite of utilities for cleaning disk and operating system environment

CCleaner (, originally Crap Cleaner),[7] developed by Piriform (a company acquired by Avast in 2017), is a utility used to clean potentially unwanted files and invalid Windows Registry entries from a computer. It is one of the longest-established system cleaners, first launched in 2004.[8] It was originally developed for Microsoft Windows only,[9] but in 2012, a macOS version was released. An Android version was released in 2014.

CCleaner has been reviewed by Chip.de,[10]TechRadar,[11]PC Magazine,[12] and TechRepublic.[13]

Features[edit]

CCleaner can delete potentially unwanted files left by certain programs, including Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Safari, Windows Media Player, eMule, Google Toolbar, Netscape, Microsoft Office, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, McAfee, Adobe Flash Player, Sun Java, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and GIMP[14] along with browsing history, cookies, recycle bin, memory dumps, file fragments, log files, system caches, application data, autocomplete form history, and various other data.[15] The program includes a registry cleaner to locate and correct problems in the Windows registry, such as missing references to shared DLLs, unused registration entries for file extensions, and missing references to application paths.[14] CCleaner 2.27 and later can wipe the MFT free space of a drive, or the entire drive.

CCleaner can uninstall programs or modify the list of programs that execute on startup.[16] Since version 2.19, CCleaner can delete Windows System Restore points. CCleaner can also automatically update installed programs and computer drivers. [17][18]

CCleaner also has its own web browser called CCleaner Browser. CCleaner Browser is included to optionally install in the CCleaner installer, but it can also be installed from its website. CCleaner Browser avoids advertising, avoids tracking, has built-in security against all kinds of malware, phishing, malicious downloads, and also avoids unwanted elements such as pop-ups or excessive browser cache. The browser is only available for Microsoft Windows.

History[edit]

CCleaner was first launched in 2004 for Microsoft Windows.[8] It remained a Windows-only utility until 2012. On 2 June 2011, Piriform announced a public beta test program for CCleaner for Mac.[19] The Mac version graduated to the test stage on 30 January 2012.[20]

A commercial Network Edition was also introduced. Piriform released CCleaner for Android in 2014.[21]

Critical reception[edit]

CNET editors gave the application a rating of 5/5 stars, calling it a 'must-have tool'. It was awarded Editor's Choice Award in April 2009 by CNET.[22] In 2016 Piriform announced 2 billion CCleaner downloads worldwide.[23] In January 2014 it had been the most popular software on FileHippo for more than a year, and had a 5-star editor's rating on download.zone and Softpedia.[24] CCleaner has been reviewed by Chip.de,[10]TechRadar,[25]PC Magazine[26] and TechRepublic.[13]

Data collection[edit]

Upon an error in the code, the Active Monitoring component of CCleaner 5.45, which was designed to measure junk levels to trigger cleaning, switched back on again. Piriform recognized this error and confirmed to users that the Active Monitoring feature did not report data. It then changed Active Monitoring to the more accurate title of 'Smart Cleaning'. After criticism later versions allowed data collection to be controlled separately by the user, although some data collection, such as OS and language, which is necessary for the app to be delivered, is still on by default as outlined in the company's Data Factsheet. Piriform states that the data collection is completely anonymous and is used to improve product quality. [27][28][29][30]

Bundled software[edit]

In December 2018, it was reported that users installing CCleaner would also have Avast Antivirus installed without their permission, with TechSpot claiming this arguably made CCleaner no better than the malware it was supposed to defend against. Piriform denied this.[31]

In July 2020, Microsoft Windows Defender began flagging the free version of CCleaner as a "potentially unwanted application", stating that "while the bundled applications themselves are legitimate, bundling of software, especially products from other providers, can result in unexpected software activity that can negatively impact user experiences."[32] Piriform rolled out an update days later and third-party software installation is now optional when installing the program.

Malware infection[edit]

After Piriform was acquired by Avast, in September 2017, CCleaner 5.33 was compromised by the incorporation into the distributed program of the Floxif trojan horse that could install a backdoor, enabling remote access to 2.27 million[33] infected machines.[34][35] Avast reported that the malware was already in CCleaner version 5.33, prior to the purchase of Piriform. Forty of the infected machines received a second-stage payload that appears to have targeted technology companies Samsung, Sony, Asus, Intel, VMWare, O2, Singtel, Gauselmann, Dyn, Chunghwa and Fujitsu.[36][37] On 13 September, Piriform released CCleaner 5.34 and CCleaner Cloud 1.07.3191, without the malicious code.[38]

On 21 October 2019, Avast disclosed a second security breach during which attackers tried again to insert malware inside CCleaner releases. That attempt was unsuccessful.[39]

I was having computer issues and didn't know what to do. My friend recommended MyCleanPC so, I gave them a try for my personal Mac laptop that was suffering from a bad hard drive. The company had great reviews, the prices were reasonable, but I was really worried since I had not used this service before. The technician quickly responded to all my emails and clearly explained what he was doing during the remote session with my computer. My laptop is running better than ever now thanks to this company!

I spun up a new virtual instance of Windows 10 Pro and fully patched the OS. With no other changes I went to MyCleanPC and installed the app. It claimed I had junk files and spyware slowing down a pristine, new instance of Windows 10. This app may help an older and/or infected PC. But I wouldn't trust this company or its app.

What is a Virus?

A virus will disguise itself as a real program. Viruses are often rewritten and altered so that they cannot be detected. Anti-virus programs and their definitions must be updated regularly to look for new and re-written viruses. Viruses are a parasite, programs that are written to enter a computer without the user's knowledge. The word parasite is used because a virus attaches to files and replicates itself, and thus continues to spread through the infected system. Some viruses can cause serious damage and slow down system performance. clean my pc will rid any infection on your computer.

I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive. We've created life in our own image: Stephen Hawking

The Nasties!

A bit about specific Viruses, Trojan horses and worms etc that clean my pc will protect you from.

Code RedImage of code red virus

A Windows system infected by the Code Red virus locks out the user, because the worm creates a backdoor into the computer's operating system, allowing a remote user to access and control the machine. In computing terms, this is an exploit. It’s not good for the computer's owner. .

The hacker controlling the virus can access information from the victim's system or even use the infected computer to steal personal information such as passwords, banking details etc. That means the victim not only has to deal with an infected computer, but also may fall under suspicion for crimes he or she didn't commit.

Confiker Image of conficker virus

Confiker is a computer worm and is supposed to be one of the most widespread viruses. Also known as Kido, Downup and Downadup. It first appeared in October of 2008 and infected 10 to 15 million systems worldwide. It infected the systems used by the House of Commons, the ministry of defence and hospitals. The usual evidence of being infected with this virus is slow browsing, it also prevents the running of anti-virus applications making it very difficult to remove.

The virus hangs about in the system doing nothing but is triggered on certain events such as April fools day.

I Love You Image of i love you virus

Is probably the computer virus that is the deadliest. Created by two Filipino programmers Reonel Ramones and Onel de Guzman All around the globe, this was a virus that was truly a dangerous and destructive infection affecting a large number of systems. It contaminated more than ten million Windows systems by 4 May 2000.

I Love You began as a message in an email with the attachment “LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.txt.vbs“. Millions of systems ended up being damaged by this virus that is resulted in a cost of approximately 10 billion pounds. It infected 10% of the computers of the world’s biggest companies.

MelissaImage of melissa virus

David L. Smith created this virus in March 1999. It infected word documents and Outlook and was passed around as email attachments. These attachments usual contained a list of passwords to adult websites. It is estimated that the cost of this virus was around the 80 million pounds mark. The email contained the title "Important Message From and usually a friends email accounts name. When the email message was clicked the body shows: "Here's the document you asked for. Do not show anyone else )".

The attachment was titled “list” and had the .doc extension. List.doc showed a list of adult sites with login details. Melissa then mailed itself to 50 friends or colleagues on the host email list. Smith was arrested due to efforts made by the FBI, Monmouth internet and N.J. Police state. He pleaded guilty to writing the virus and sentenced to 20 months in prison along with a fine of £5000

Sasser Image of sasser virus

18 year-old German Sven Jaschan was arrested in May 2004 for releasing the worm on his 18th birthday in 2004. Microsoft offered a bounty of £250,000 for information leading to the arrest of Jaschan. One of his friends told Microsoft that Jaschan had written the worm and also Netsky.AC, another variant. Sasser.E was infecting systems around the globe after he was arrested.

Typical indications of infection are files on the systems hard drive named C:\win.log, C:\win2.log. 100% central processing unit running at 1005 as well where the PC would crash due to the file transfer protocol software running randomly. Jaschan created the worm before his 18th birthday, this meant the German courts could only try him as a minor. He was found guilty of committing computer sabotage and altering information held on the system. He was sentenced to 21 months suspended.

Zeus Image of zeus virus

Zeus is a Trojan horse, a malicious piece of software that infects the Windows operating system. It was first detected in 2007 and its primary goal was to steal banking details. Also known as Zbot, it infected millions of systems across the world. Zeus creates a “botnet” which is a network of infected systems, it is a keylogger which spies on a users input to the keyboard.

This Trojan horse can infect mobile phones which is why companies are moving forward to two-factor authentication. Billions of pounds were lost to this malicious software that stole banking details from users infected machines. The way Zeus infected machines was by phishing, a type of email or website created to look like the real sight. Cisco, Amazon and Oracle were targeted in particular. Over 100 hackers were responsible for stealing 80 million pounds.

Microsoft continually release updates for Windows which incorporate patches to deal with a lot of these nasties however, pirated versions of windows will not be able to install these patches so, if you are running a legal version of Windows, be sure to get the regular updates and install them to give you further protection.

This is a video of cyber attacks which are taking place all over the world at any given time, night or day. Below you will see a visual representation of such attacks. The yellow boxes are the attackers and the green circles are the victims. Occasionally you will see an orange trajectory, this is an attack known as an APT or better known as Advanced Persistent Threats.

It is a fairly new threat that targets Linux servers which once installed, will take control of a command server and then have the ability to edit, delete, move files on the system. This visualisation was taken on Friday 23rd April 2021. You can see the timestamp on the right-hand side of the window which also shows the number of attacks that have taken place that day.

As you can see, cyber crime exists and is a real threat to businesses where they attack important servers and also, individuals in their own homes.

What is the point of the clean my pc for free website?

Firstly, a bit about me Clive Jackson, designer of clean my pc for free. I have been in the computer game since the late '80s. I was out of work and had to find a hobby to fill my time whilst job hunting. The local library had the answer. I found up a book “how to build a computer”. At first thoughts, it was quite daunting. I, at that time, didn’t have a P.C. as we now know it.

I was the proud owner of an Amstrad colour personal computer 64 which had a tiny memory of 64 kilobytes, that’s not megabytes! When eventually I got my first P.C. it was what is known as a “bare-bones system”.
What does this mean? Well, since the system is sold as a pre-built unit, with the motherboard and power supply already installed, it was the cheaper option to build your own.

Image of barebones system

A Barebones System.

After purchasing the necessary parts such as the CD-ROM, hard drive etc. I was pleased to strike it up for the first time and see my new creation alive! The problem is you need to continually upgrade and update. Processors were slow and needed upgrading to a faster specification.

Next was to install the operating system which in those days was Microsoft DOS which came on three floppy disks 4MB each. Listening for the DOS beeps was crucial as you had no user interface to see what went wrong if anything.

Once DOS was in, it was time to install windows. At that time, it was windows 3.1 which came with 7 floppy disks if I remember correctly. Windows would load the welcome screen, deep joy!

Image of Dos disks

Microsoft DOS disks.

Next was the awkward step of installing a modem (modulator-demodulator) to connect to the internet. Sometimes an absolute nightmare. My ISP at that time was Freeserve dial-up.

This was an internet connection that you could not access until 6 pm in the evening, wow, those were the days! Firstly, you had to install the drivers which came on CD-ROM. Pretty straight forward nowadays but, back then a nightmare!

Image of Windows 3.1

Windows 3.1

If you could not afford an Anti-virus then, you were at the mercy of the bad guys out there. Many times I had to re-install the system from scratch as there was no imaging as such and, what was out there was very expensive and, no back-up, restore like we have today. Because I had self-taught all this stuff, I was at the mercy of my friends whose own system had crashed. They wanted me to repair their PC’s which then, I did for free. It took many, many hours of my time and, to be honest, became quite annoying.

One day I decided to write down on paper a step by step guide for them to follow to repair their PC. Yes, I did get many telephone calls asking for help but, I was happy to do that. One day it dawned on me that, if I designed a website to help clear out people’s PC’s, it would be such a great help to them and to help the rest of the world do the same. This is where I came up with this site… clean my pc for free. I hope you can make use of it, to increase the security, performance, speed etc. of your own machine.

Please review the following in full before beginning to clean up your hard drive (C: drive). If you have any questions about cleaning up your hard drive, contact the Help Desk ([email protected] or x7440).

If you haven’t already, please review the Top 11 Tips for Cleaning-Up Your Files: http://techdocs.blogs.brynmawr.edu/6416

Purpose of your Hard Drive (C: drive)

The C: drive, also known as your computer’s hard drive, has the important job of storing your computer’s operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc.), as well as applications you use (e.g. Microsoft Office, Adobe, Mozilla Firefox) and files you download from the internet.

What Belongs on the C: drive?

The C: drive is best utilized as a temporary storage location for files you’re currently working on.

Relying on the C: drive for long-term storage is risky. All hard drives will inevitably fail, it’s just a matter of when. Keeping this in mind, backing up important files from your C: drive is a critical step in ensuring the security of your data. See the Cleaning Up Your C: Drive To-do List: section below for backup recommendations.

Also, keeping sensitive data (e.g. credit card numbers, social security numbers, data governed by FERPA) stored on your C: drive increases the risk that it will fall into the wrong hands. In fact, certain types of data are prohibited from being stored on your C: drive according to the College’s Data Handling Policy and Data Handling Storage Guidelines.

Cleaning-Up Your C: Drive To-do List

If you think you’d benefit from a quick brush up on how to use your operating system’s file management tools, see the section titled Tips for Using the Windows and Mac File Management Tools. Below are a few tips for making deleting files more efficient!

1)  Transfer files from the C: Drive that do not belong there or that you’d like to back-up

  • Back-up non-sensitive files by syncing your computer with OneDrive. This allows you to choose a location on your computer that will automatically sync with the cloud whenever changes are made (e.g. if you add, modify, or delete a file in this location on your computer, these changes will also occur within OneDrive in Office 365. The inverse is also true.). Syncing facilitates the efficient transfer of folders and individual files. See this Tech Doc for more information: http://techdocs.blogs.brynmawr.edu/5989
  • Transfer school- and work-related files to the H: drive for safe keeping. An alternative to storing school- and work-related files on your C: drive is to store them on the H: drive, part of the College’s network file storage system. The H: drive is available for all community members as a personal, secure storage location. The H: drive should not be used to store files of a per- sonal nature. Learn how to access the H: drive here: http://techdocs.blogs.brynmawr.edu/856

Note: Again, please remain mindful of the Data Handling Policy and Data Handling Storage Guidelines when considering storing files containing sensitive data on any storage medium. Certain types of data are not permitted to be stored on the H: drive.

2)  Clean up your Desktop!

The desktop is a convenient place to put shortcuts to frequently accessed applications and files or to use as a temporary storage location for files you’re currently working on, but it can also quickly turn into a cluttered disaster (similar to a physical desktop!).

With physical files, you might organize papers into folders, then place the folders into a filing cabinet for easy retrieval. With your digital files, consider organizing files into folders in other locations such as the Documents folder on your C: drive, or better yet, on the H: or S: drives, as appropriate. You’ll find that you’ll spend less time straining your eyes to comb through files on your desktop.

3)  Delete files from the C: Drive that do not belong there and/or are unneeded

Note: LITS recommends that all employees follow existing file retention policies for digital files. See the College ’s Record Retention Policy here: http://www.brynmawr.edu/humanresources/Internal/Record_Retention_List.pdf

Please consult your supervisor with any questions.

  • Don’t know where to start deleting? Your Downloads folder is an easy target! Chances are you’ve downloaded more than a few files to your computer, and they’re still sitting in the Downloads folder
  • Target the big ones! Delete large files that are of a personal nature or are unnecessary to keep. See this video to learn how to sort files by file size: http://www.viddler.com/v/c6b4538f
  • Uninstall files and programs that you do not use. Most modern computers now have C: drives that hold large quantities of data, though if you’re getting close to using all of that space, your computer may be running at less than optimal speed. Deleting unused programs or files (especially large ones) may increase performance and free up space for more valuable files.
  • Delete files containing sensitive data if you no longer need them OR transfer them to a secure, approved storage location if you do. Many types of sensitive data are not permitted to be stored on the C: drive
  • Consider deleting older versions of files. You may not need to hold onto dozens of revisions
  • Delete duplicate files. No need to keep multiple copies of the same file on one storage location

4)  Other Things to Consider While Cleaning-Up your Files

  • Be consistent about how you name your files, and follow file naming best practices. Naming your files in a consistent manner will improve your ability to efficiently find them later and to understand differences and commonalities among your Following file naming best practices –such as avoiding using special characters (e.g. <, >, : , ?, *) – will prevent various issues. Read more here: http://techdocs.blogs.brynmawr.edu/4952
  • Consider how you organize your folders. Does your current folder organization system work for you? How could you better organize your folders to make files easier to locate and less likely to be lost and forgotten? While there isn’t a silver bullet for folder organization, you should base your folder organization around the way you work. For example, creating folders for different months or semesters might make the most sense for your workflow, or creating a folder for each of your projects might improve your organization
  • When considering what action to take with a file, ask yourself the following questions:
    • How often will I need to use this file? If it’s unlikely that you’ll need to use a file on a recurring basis or at all in the near future, consider deleting it, archiving it, or moving it to a new folder on the C: drive for past projects
    • Did I produce this file? This is less applicable to the C: drive than shared network drives, but during your clean-up, you may come across files that someone else had created. If you do, find out if they need the file(s) before taking action
    • Can I access this information somewhere else? If you’re storing data on your C: drive that you can access elsewhere (e.g. BiONic, the College website), consider deleting the file. If the file contains data of a sensitive nature it should not be stored on your C: drive
    • Should this file be archived? Certain types of files are required to be archived. Contact the Help Desk if you have questions
