In the 13th CGPM in 1967 was decided that the unit of temperature will be the Kelvin, and not 'degrees Kelvin'. The triple point of water is 273.16 K, which is 0.01 oC (degrees Celsius).

Definition of Celsius:

The Celsius-scale is defined by the follow two points:

  1. The triple point of water is defined as 0.01 oC.
  2. One degree Celsius equals the change of temperature with one degree on the ideal gas-scale.

The triple point is a theoretical point where the three phases of a matter (for example water) come together. This means that liquid, solid and gas phase from a matter appear at the same time. This is practically impossible.

History of measuring temperature:

The idea of measuring temperature exists a long time. One of the first who wanted to make a temperature scale was Galen (ca. 170). He had a scale of 4 degrees warmth and 4 degrees of cold. The earlier measurement instruments for temperature where called thermo scopes. In 1610 Galileo introduced wine in the thermo scopes instead of air. In 1724 Gabriel Fahrenheit introduced the medium mercury in the thermo scopes. The reason that mercury was used is that the thermal expansion of mercury is large, mostly homogeneous and it does not stick on the glass. Mercury also stays in the liquid phase for a great range of temperature. It is also easy to read.

Present temperature scales:

Present temperature scales have two basic points: from when the water starts to freeze and when it starts to boil. Between these two temperatures a scale is made. The two most popular scales are the Celsius (made by Anders Celsius) and Fahrenheit (made by Gabriel Fahrenheit) scale. The Fahrenheit scale is defined so that the melting point of water lays by 32 degrees Fahrenheit and the boiling point lays by 212 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that between the freezing point and boiling point there are 180 divisions. Fahrenheit introduced his scale in 1724.

Another scale is the Celsius scale. In the Celsius scale the freezing point of water is set at 0 degrees (centigrade) and the boiling point at 100 degrees (centigrade). This scale exists on 100 divisions, also known as centiscale. In 1948 the centidegrees (centigrade scale) were replaced by the degrees Celsius (oC). The Celsius scale is defined by the following two points:

  1. The triple point of water is defined at 0.01 oC.
  2. One degree Celsius equals the change of temperature with one degree on the ideal gas-scale.

On the Celsius-scale the boiling point of water with a pressure of 1 atmosphere is set at 99.975 oC. With the centiscale it was 100.

SI temperature scale:

Temperature is related with the kinetic energy of the molecules. The kinetic energy changes when the temperature changes. Temperature is defined as the translation of heath between two objects. The fundamental temperature scale is the one of Kelvin. The temperature scale of Kelvin depends of the absolute zero point. This is the point where the molecules do not move anymore, so they do not give warmth. This is for all molecules. The absolute zero point is by 0 K, this is -273.15 oC. The scale is the same as the Celsius.

Treating a fever

If your child has a fever, it's important to keep them hydrated by giving them plenty of cool water to drink.

Babies should be given plenty of liquids, such as breast milk or formula. Even if your child isn't thirsty, try to bank test series online free them to drink little and often to keep their fluid levels up.

If the environment is warm, you could help to your child to stay at a comfortable temperature by covering them with a lightweight sheet or opening a window.

However, they should still be appropriately dressed for their surroundings and sponging your child with cool water isn't recommended to reduce a fever.

Antipyretics

Children'sparacetamoloribuprofen work as antipyretics, which help to reduce fever, as obx beach as being painkillers. You can't give them both at the same time, but if one doesn't work, you may want to try the other later.

Antipyretics aren't always necessary. If your child isn't distressed by the fever or underlying illness, there's no need to use antipyretics to reduce a fever.

Celsius to Fahrenheit conversion is probably the most confusing conversion there is, but a simple °C to °F conversion is actually quite easy – just double the °C figure and add 30. This should be reasonably accurate for weather temperatures.

Celsius and Fahrenheit definition

The Celsius temperature range was originally defined by setting zero as the temperature at which water froze. Zero degrees C was later redefined as the temperature at which ice melts. The other point at which Celsius was set – 100 degrees Celsius – was defined as the boiling point of water.

Since its definition, the Celsius scale has been redefined to peg it to Kelvin. Zero degrees Celsius is now defined as 273.15K. As one degree Celsius is equal to one Kelvin, boiling point of water is equal to 273.15 + 100 = 373.15 Kelvin.

The Fahrenheit temperature range is based on setting the freezing point of water at 32 degrees, and boiling to 212 degrees. This means that boiling and freezing point are 180 degrees apart. Absolute zero is defined as -459.67°F.

Why is 39 degrees c to f Celsius to Fahrenheit so difficult?

Because both Celsius and Fahrenheit scales are offset– ie neither are defined as starting at zero. On top of that, for every additional unit of heat energy the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales add a different additional value. Because of this setup, it’s impossible to say that doubling the °C or °F value doubles the amount of heat energy, so it’s difficult to get an intuitive grasp of how much energy 1 degree Fahrenheit or Celsius actually is.

The only temperature system that works intuitively – where a doubling of value doubles the energy – is Kelvin, where absolute zero is 0, body temperature is 310.15K and boiling water is 373.15K. The problem with the Kelvin scale is that the zero end of the scale is too far from human experience to be useful – as anyone who set their room temperature to 20.5 Kelvin would attest, if they lived long enough.

What is the difference between Centigrade and Celsius?

It’s just a naming convention. Degrees Centigrade and degrees Celsius are the same thing. Degrees Celsius (invented by Anders Celsius) are sometimes called Centigrade, because the scale was defined between 0 and 100 degrees, hence centi-grade meaning a scale consisting of 1/100ths.

Converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius

Incidentally, while the UK's Met Office started publishing temperatures in both Celsius and Fahrenheit from 1962 and dropping use of Fahrenheit altogether from official reports in 1970, British media persisted in using Fahrenheit in weather reports well into the 21st century. Indeed it became the fashion to use Celsius when describing extreme winter conditions and Fahrenheit for heat waves - a nice example of double standards in action.

Using decimals

To make life a little simpler, using decimals instead of fractions, you can use 1.8 instead of 9/5.

This gives the following modified formulae

  • Celsius to Fahrenheit:
    (°C + 40) × 1.8 - 40 = 39 degrees c to f to Celsius:
    (°F + 40) / 1.8 - 40 = °C

Trying this out in action on a hot day (and remembering that multiplying by 1.8 is the same as doubling and then subtracting 10 per cent) we could have 36°C plus 40 is 76, times 1.8 is 136.8 minus 40 is 96.8°F, which is firmly in 'Scorcha' territory.

And the other way, on a rather chillier day, 48°F plus 40 is 88, divided by 1.8 is 48.88 recurring i was made for loving you original minus 40 equals 8.9°C, which actually does sound quite cold.

What Is a Fever?

A fever is any significant 39 degrees c to f in an animal's body temperature triggered by its immune system.

In the past, a standard of 37 degrees Celsius (89.6 degrees Fahrenheit) has stood as a landmark for healthy 'normal' human body temperatures. This has been challenged in recent years, with anywhere from around 36 to just over 37 degrees Celsius (97 to 99 Fahrenheit) expected in a typical adult, and children running a touch warmer with common temperatures of up to 38 degrees Celsius (about 100 Fahrenheit).

 

Scientifically speaking, there is no specific degree of change in temperature universally considered as a fever. Limits vary between different medical systems around the globe and are often based on age and history.

In typically healthy adults, a rise of a degree or so isn't considered a major cause for medical attention.

Results exceeding around 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit), however, could prompt a need to investigate potential causes and treatments. Temperatures higher than 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) are often considered life-threatening and in need of reducing.

Among the elderly or people undergoing chemotherapy treatments, a temperature beyond 37.5 degrees Celsius or so (99.5 Fahrenheit) could be viewed as an indication of infection requiring immediate action.

Children are more susceptible to fevers while their immune system continues to develop. To be on the safe side, parents are commonly encouraged to seek medical assistance if temperatures exceed 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit).

How do fevers develop?

The body's preferred temperature range is managed by a part of the nervous system called the hypothalamus.

This small nub of brain tissue generates various biological responses that increase or decrease temperatures, such as by burning glucose through increased muscle movements (shivering) or increasing skin evaporation (sweating).

 

As the body's thermostat, the hypothalamus can also have its preferred temperature changed by materials known as pyrogens.

These are molecules typically produced by bacteria, viruses or even white blood cells, which cause the hypothalamus to reset the body's ideal temperature at a higher limit.

Why do we get fevers?

For hundreds of millions of years, animals have managed infections by behaviourally or metabolically raising their body temperature.

Exactly how this increased warmth fights off invaders isn't clear. There is little evidence to suggest that a such a 39 degrees c to f jump in temperature is of direct threat to disease-causing viruses and bacteria.

One way a fever seems to benefit us is by enhancing the activity of certain immune responses, favouring movement and delivery of key chemicals and immune cells to target sites around the body.
