The Jackrabbits, who rank No. 78 in KenPom’s rankings, four slots behind Nevada (74), enter at 4-1 with three consecutive wins — two coming against solid opponents (Montana State, Stephen F. Austin) while another against a Division-III program (Presentation College). They have won 20 or more games in five of their last seven seasons, not including this one, with three NCAA Tournament berths (all first round losses).

The Wolf Pack sit at 1-3 with three straight losses — all to West Coast Conference programs. Their most recent loss came in a nail-biting 73-70 road defeat against San Francisco — who begin the season 5-0 — on Thursday, squandering a 16-point lead in the process.

Nevada’s in the midst of its first three-game losing streak under third-year head coach Steve Alford, with the last coming in Feb. of 2015. South Dakota State is in its best five-game start since it began 6-0 in 2015-16.

What to know

Jackrabbits are no patsy. South Dakota State was the 2020-21 FCS national runner-up and is ranked No. 3 in the preseason FCS rankings. The Jackrabbits finished 8-2 last year (5-1 Missouri Valley), losing to Sam Houston State (23-21) on a late touchdown in the title game on May 27. Just about everyone of note from that squad is back, with 10 starters returning on each side of the ball, plus two specialists. One glaring exception: QB Mark Gronowski, who suffered an injury in the first quarter of the national title game, will miss all of 2021.

McBride’s opening act. Rams senior Trey McBride, a 2020 All-American from Fort Morgan, is Todd McShay’s No. 1-ranked tight end on his NFL Draft Big Board and the No. 27 overall prospect. McBride has nine career touchdown receptions, one behind Joel Dreesen for second place in program history. McBride is among 33 Rams who are seniors or beyond, including his older brother, Toby, a “super” senior defensive lineman.

Rams vs. FCS. CSU is facing an FCS opponent for the 10th time in the past 11 years. The Rams, who are 2-0 all-time against SDSU (last meeting 1966), are 7-2 in north dakota state vs south dakota state basketball games, but that includes an embarrassing home loss to Illinois State (35-19) just three years ago. While the Jackrabbits are a solid FCS program, they are just 1-9 against FBS teams. The Jackrabbits’ only win came in the 2015 season opener at Kansas, 41-38.

Searching for points. The Jackrabbits ranked No. 5 in FCS scoring defense last season, allowing just 15 points per game. They allowed 287.9 of total apply for a chime credit card per game. CSU’s offense averaged just 22.2 points in 2020 and had a poor 46.0% red-zone touchdown efficiency in its four games — all against Mountain West competition. The Rams’ third-down conversation rate was just 22%.

Key matchups

CSU D-line vs. Rabbits. The Rams return 2020 All-Mountain West first-team defensive end Scott Patchan and every other member of a defensive front that led the nation in tackles for loss per game last season. An SDSU offense that averaged 29.2 points in 2020 (22nd in FCS) with a 93.5% red-zone offensive touchdown efficiency should be a sturdy test ahead of next week’s showdown with the SEC’s Vanderbilt Commodores.

Transfer QBs. Rams starting quarterback Todd Centeio, a redshirt senior transfer from Temple, started CSU’s 2020 opener at Fresno State but suffered an injury that limited his playing time in the following three games. He likely will be opposed by Jackrabbits graduate transfer Chris Oladokun, who previously played for South Florida and Samford.

The Summit League reaches the peak of its season in its usual home, Sioux Falls. A conference schedule of back-to-backs saw the regular season title in the balance until the final day, when North Dakota State’s win in Vermillion handed the trophy to South Dakota State.

It was the north dakota state vs south dakota state basketball season in a row that a team from the Dakotas won the title outright and, not surprisingly, the league’s auto bid has been split between NDSU and SDSU each year since 2011. Will a decade of Dakota dominance continue this year? That well may be the case with the Bison and Jacks again the class of the league, and with a shorthanded South Dakota waiting in the wings.

But there are other teams capable of pulling off a magical run in the Pentagon, and grabbing a spot in the sport’s tallest summit. Less puns, on to the particulars!

The Favorite

South Dakota State (15-6, 9-3): The regular season champion in a truncated season should be the favorite to cut the nets down in the Pentagon, but just marginally. The Jacks yet again were potent offensively and, as has been customary in the Otzelberger-Henderson era, punished teams from deep. The nation’s second-best three-point shooting team, however, has a notable absentee with star sophomore Noah Freidel, who is taking the rest of the season off to focus on his mental health.

The brave decision is obviously more important than wins or losses on the court but, since we’re talking about basketball, it’s worth nothing that SDSU did go 3-1 since Freidel stepped away in mid February. After a shaky first half against Kansas City in the first of a back-to-back last weekend, the Jacks offense seemed to find itself over the rest of the weekend. Douglas Wilson is the most dangerous low-post scorer in the conference, and breakout sophomore Baylor Scheierman (44.4 3P%) is yet another product of SDSU’s assembly line of talented perimeter scorers.

The Contenders

North Dakota State (13-11, 11-5): The Bison had a hand in SDSU’s regular season title, but may well have a hand in delivering hardware to themselves in Sioux Falls. It’s in this roster’s muscle memory, as NDSU has won this event each of the past two seasons. As often seems to be the case, the Bison bring the league’s most balanced attack to the table, with the league’s second-most efficient defense and fourth-most efficient defense. NDSU has a ton of height for the Summit, and a trio of reliable scorers in Rocky Kreuser, Sam Griesel and Tyree Eady. If they can play at their preferred, slower pace in a generally up-tempo league, it could be yet another NDSU triumph in Sioux Falls.

Oral Roberts (13-10, 10-5): If scorers shine this time of year, than the Golden Eagles bring a compelling argument to the Pentagon. Max Abmas has shone all season (24.8 PPG, 46.1 3P%), and enters the fray as the NCAA’s leading scorer. He and north dakota state vs south dakota state basketball first team forward Kevin Obanor are as potent a one-two punch as there is in the Summit, and the Golden Eagles have more than enough to make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2008. Abmas struggled in ORU’s semifinal loss to NDSU a year ago, and is looking to rewrite that script and help break the Dakotas hold on the conference.

South Dakota (13-10, 11-4): If life were fair, the Coyotes would be higher on this list, and possibly even the favorite. Breakout sophomore and Division II transfer A.J. Plitzuweit suffered a terrible knee injury in USD’s Saturday win over that saw his season come to an end. The Coyotes still have a Stanley Umude (21.3 PPG, 6.9 RPG), who would have been a runaway POY in most seasons, and fell short this year only due to Abmas’ brilliance. He willed USD to a halftime first premier credit card faq against NDSU on Sunday, and could be a difference maker for a team that may be missing some offensive punch, but still won plenty of games this season.

The Rest: It’d be negligent to not at least mention Kansas City (11-12, 7-7) and North Dakota (9-16, 8-8) who both won games against the upper tier teams this year, and could each be dangerous at the Pentagon. The Roos force turnovers in droves, and bring the league’s best defense and Defensive POY in senior guard Brandon McKissic. The Fighting Hawks bring Filip Rebraca, a premier scorer and playmaker from the high post. Either team going on a run may be a surprise, but surely wouldn’t be a shock to those that have followed this year. Western Illinois’ Will Carius — whose played in all three NCAA divisions — had a tremendous season (14.9 PPG), and Omaha has gritty seniors in Ayo Akinwole and Matt Pile.

The Prediction

It’s hard to not think fate would dictate that the Bison would capture a third straight crown, and get the chance to go to a tournament they didn’t a year ago — especially after being one of the few teams to have really, actually punched a bid in 2020. That may well happen, but there just seems to be something trending in the right direction with SDSU at the moment.

They had a dominant offensive effort against the Roos stout defense the last time out, though Kansas City was without McKissic. Wilson is as reliable an offensive producer as there is in the league outside Abmas and Umude, and Scheierman has himself scored in double figures in every game but one this year. Plus, big men Matt Dentlinger and, as of last weekend, Luke Appel are on offensive hot stretches. Even though the hordes of blue and yellow won’t be there like usual, it still seems the Jacks are the favorites in a league that could shake out plenty of different ways.

Takeaways and reactions after Bradley basketball drops opener at South Dakota State

Bradley University was left seeing triple by South Dakota State in the first half Tuesday.

But the Braves men's basketball team had seen that act before, and stopped those 3s, cut down on their own turnovers and closed to within 14 in the second half to catch a glimpse of their potential.

BU recovered in the second half, but took an 81-65 loss in the season opener for both teams before 2,445 at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.

A year ago, the Braves lost a four-point game to South Dakota State at Carver Arena on a night the Jackrabbits hit 17 3s.

"It was like deja vu," said Bradley center Rienk Mast on Tuesday after delivering 11 points and 15 rebounds. "I think in that first half, we saw maybe three or four minutes of how our team wants to play.

"But the second half is how we wanted to compete. We got it down to (14) I think, and we were so close to changing the game.

"We just couldn't make a shot today, it was hard out there."

Preseason look: 6 questions facing Bradley ahead of the 2021-22 men's basketball season

BOX SCORE:South Dakota State 81, Bradley 65

South Dakota State made nine 3s in the first half to build a 47-26 lead.  But Bradley held South Dakota without a made 3 (on four attempts) in the second half. The Braves also had 10 turnovers in the first half, but only five in the second half.

Senior forward Ja'Shon Henry was held scoreless in the first half, but recovered for 10 points in the second half.

Terry Roberts had 15 points, five assists and three steals.

"Live-ball turnovers led to runs, and to 3-pointers," Bradley coach Brian Wardle said. "In the second half, you saw a more aggressive team. Lesson learned, you have to be aggressive from start to finish."

Who shined?

"They all could have played better," Wardle said. "But Rienk Mast was pretty aggressive. Jayson Kent and Darius Hannah played pretty well. Roberts scored well and moved the ball."

What went wrong

"You can't have 15 turnovers on the road and win," Wardle said. "We got to get better at taking care of the ball. And 3s. I was hoping we'd get more 3s."

What they said

• What did coach Brian Wardle say to his team when they gathered in the locker room after the game?

"Actually, I heard them talking before I got in there," Wardle said. "The older guys were leading it. They talked about the turnovers and aggressiveness, things I was going to say."

• Bradley forward Rienk Mast: "We let guys get open too easily early on. We got more up into the gaps in the second half.

• Mast, on BU's 36-22 advantage in the paint: "We got a lot of size. That's how our team should be in the paint."

• Wardle: "I thought South Dakota State really struggled to score over our length. But they are a really good passing team, a good team playing in a really great atmosphere."

• Wardle, on BU's second-half effort: "The second half is more the type I see this team playing."

Big Boya

Bradley's 7-foot center Ari Boya played his first regular-season game since Dec. 22 at Missouri, when he suffered a foot injury that ended his 2020-21 season.

He had four points in eight minutes, north dakota state vs south dakota state basketball a rebound and a steal.

South Dakota State shifted in the second half to a small lineup, moving 6-foot-8 forward Matt Dentlinger into the 5 spot against Boya, a tough matchup for the Bradley big man.

"We got caught too big with our lineup," Wardle said.

Bravely Speaking

Turnovers really cost Bradley on the board, where South Dakota State scored a 26-6 advantage on points off turnovers. . Bradley's size delivered a 36-22 win in the paint. . The free throw line: South Dakota State was 28-of-29 at the line. Bradley was 9-of-15. . The Braves actually out-shot South Dakota from the field, 36.8% to 33.3%. . But South Dakota State shifted to a four-guard lineup and went on an eight-point run with just over seven minutes left to build up a 70-51 lead. . The Braves missed their first seven shots from the field to fall behind 10-1 after the opening tipoff. . Terry Roberts was 6-of-18 shooting, while Ja'Shon Henry and Rienk Mast each were 4-of-12. .

More: Chick-fil-A, scooters and Netherlands: What to know ahead of Bradley basketball's scrimmage

He had four points in eight minutes, with a rebound and a steal.

South Dakota State shifted in the second half to a small lineup, moving 6-foot-8 forward Matt Dentlinger into the 5 spot against Boya, a tough matchup for the Bradley big man.

"We got caught too big with our lineup," Wardle said.

Bravely Speaking

Turnovers really cost Bradley on the board, where South Dakota State scored a 26-6 advantage on points off turnovers. ... Bradley's size delivered a 36-22 win in the paint. ... The free throw line: South Dakota State was 28-of-29 at the line. Bradley was 9-of-15. ... The Braves actually out-shot South Dakota from the field, 36.8% to 33.3%. ... The Braves were just 6-of-25 from beyond the arc. ... Bradley cut its deficit from 21 points to 14 points with 11 minutes left. But South Dakota State shifted to a four-guard lineup and went on an eight-point run with just over seven minutes left to build up a 70-51 lead. ... The Braves missed their first seven shots from the field to fall behind 10-1 after the opening tipoff. ... Terry Roberts was 6-of-18 shooting, while Ja'Shon Henry and Rienk Mast each were 4-of-12. ... Jayson Kent came off the bench for 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 18 minutes. ... The starting lineup was guards Connor Hickman and Terry Roberts with forwards Rienk Mast and Ja'Shon Henry and center Ari Boya. ... The Braves have Howard next, in their home opener at Carver Arena at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

South Dakota State at Colorado State; 7 p.m. Friday, Canvas Stadium

The Rams, who are 2-0 all-time against SDSU (last meeting 1966), are 7-2 in those games, but that includes an embarrassing home loss to Illinois State (35-19) just three years ago. While the Jackrabbits are a solid FCS program, they are just 1-9 against FBS teams. The Jackrabbits’ only win came in the 2015 season opener at Kansas, 41-38.

Related Articles

Searching for points. The Jackrabbits ranked No. 5 in FCS scoring defense last season, allowing just 15 points per game. They allowed 287.9 of total yardage per game.

Predictions

Sean Keeler, sports columnist: CSU, 27-20

The Summit League reaches the peak of its season in its usual home, Sioux Falls. A conference schedule of back-to-backs saw the regular season title in the balance until the final day, when North Dakota State’s win in Vermillion handed the trophy to South Dakota State.

It was the fifth season in a row that a team from the Dakotas won the title outright and, not surprisingly, the league’s auto bid has been split between NDSU and SDSU each year since 2011.

He and all-league first team forward Kevin Obanor are as potent a one-two punch as there is in the Summit, and the Golden Eagles have more than enough to make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2008.

He willed USD to a halftime lead against NDSU on Sunday, and could be a difference maker for a team that may be missing some offensive punch, but still won plenty of games this season.

Junior Sam Griesel led the Bison with 17 points, and Tyree Eady and Rocky Kreuser both added 13 for NDSU. NDSU shot 50 percent for the game compared to 46 percent for SDSU, but the Jackrabbits drained 13-of-25 (52 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Bison led 65-60 following a three-pointer by freshman Grant Nelson with 2:01 remaining. SDSU tied the game at 65-65 on a three-pointer by Baylor Scheierman with 1:00 on the clock.

Kreuser gave the Bison a 67-65 advantage on a tough bucket in traffic with 39 seconds left. On the ensuing possession, Easley drained a three from the right wing to put SDSU up one with 17.6 seconds remaining.

The Bison called a timeout, but were unable to get a shot off on the final possession.
