Overview

Started in 1941, Security State Bank & Trust has $978 million in assets along with deposits totaling $795 million, classifying the institution as a medium-size bank. Security State Bank & Trust, whose headquarters are in Fredericksburg, Texas, lacks premium access to support representatives, with no live chat or all-day service options available. It is a conventional brick-and-mortar bank with access to service representatives at a physical location, in addition to its online and mobile offerings. With a commendable 4.1 stars out of 5, Security State Bank & Trust proves it is a good bank that gets the job done. Security State Bank & Trust provides customers with a varied selection of banking products, which include savings accounts, checking accounts, money market accounts, CDs, IRAs and mortgage products. It has a fair savings rate compared to the average savings account. If you're interested in stress-free personal checking, the bank's most basic checking account does not carry a monthly maintenance charge. Institutions that offer free checking as well as a high savings APY are the best option for getting the most income on your deposits alongside convenient access to your funds.

How We Rated It

SmartAsset's Overall Rating

The is a weighted average of rates, fees, service quality and financial health.Read more

When a component rating is unavailable, the overall rating is calculated as an average of the remaining available ratings.

Rates
The Rates rating represents an aggregate of interest rates for specific bank products measured against the national average interest rate for each product. Product interest rates may vary by branch. Rates shown reflect the highest available nationwide.
Fees
The Fees rating is an assessment of the bank's fees measured against the national average fee amount for particular services and is also affected by whether or not the bank refunds ATM fees.
Service Quality
The Customer Experience rating is a weighted average of the Mobile Rating and the Consumer Satisfaction Score, which is based on complaints brought to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
Financial Health
The Financial Health rating is based on the Texas Ratio, an indicator that warns of credit problems at particular banks: anything less than 5% is considered Excellent; less than 20% is Very Good; less than 50% is Good; less than 90% is Fair; and over 90% is Poor.

Rates

Security State Bank & Trust features a savings rate of 0.10%, which is poor compared to the national average. Security State Bank & Trust's one-year CD earns at a rate of 2.27% and the five-year CD has a rate of 2.53%, while its highest-yielding money market account has a rate of 0.10%. Given its noncompetitive savings rate, you should think about taking a look at other banks for savings accounts.

FDIC Cybersecurity Guide
We are ever vigilant in protecting your privacy. We take full advantage of the security provided by industry standard safeguards and our secured online products and services. For example, your banking transactions are encrypted as they travel over the Internet.  Anyone trying to tap in to your communications is unable to decipher them.  Your Online Banking account is also protected by a password and enhanced authentication that only you know. No one can use your account without knowing your personal password. Always guard your usernames and passwords. Report any suspected fraud to American State Bank & Trust immediately. To ensure the greatest protection of your private information and accounts we recommend the following security best practices…

Strong Passwords/Passphrases

  • Do not reveal your passwords to anyone.
  • Strengthen your password with a passphrase – a series of random words or a sentence which includes a combination of letters, numbers and special characters.  The more characters your passphrase has, the stronger it is.
  • Change passwords regularly (every 90 days is recommended).
  • Avoid selecting passwords based on personal information (i.e. username, first and last name, SSN).
  • Avoid common dictionary words.
  • Avoid keeping written records of your passwords. Create easy to remember passphrases that are hard to guess.
  • Avoid sharing usernames and passwords.
  • Do not use the same user ID and password for your financial accounts as you do for other sites, services and applications.

Email Security

  • Beware of phishing.
Avoid opening links and attachments in emails and texts, especially from senders you don’t know.  Links that appear friendly can be harmful and attempt to gain control of your computer or mobile device and steal your personal information.
  • Question the authenticity of every email.
If you are suspicious – don’t click a link or open an attachment.  Contact the sender of the suspicious email directly to verify the validity of the message (do not verify by replying to the sender of the suspicious email).
  • Never respond to email claiming to be from a bank or any company that requests your account information or personal details.  American State Bank & Trust will never ask for your personal information or account credentials (user id and password) via an email message.
  • Report any suspected fraud or suspicious emails to American State Bank & Trust immediately

Online Banking

Your mobile device provides convenient access to your email, bank and social media accounts. Unfortunately, it can potentially provide the same convenient access for unauthorized individuals. Keep in mind these tips:

  • Log out completely and exit all web browser windows when you finish a mobile/online banking session.
  • Public Internet connections aren’t secure.
Don’t perform banking transactions on a public network.  Watch out for public Wi-Fi.  Never access bank information at public locations such as Internet cafes, public libraries, kiosks, etc.
  • Never leave a logged on banking session unattended.
  • Avoid using automatic login features which save usernames and passwords for online banking accounts.
  • Use the passcode lock on your smartphone and other devices to make it more difficult for someone else to access your information if your device is lost or stolen.
  • Protect your device from viruses and malicious software (or malware) by installing security software.
  • Use caution when downloading apps and other software.  3rd-party apps and software can contain malicious software, worms, and viruses. Beware of applications that ask for unnecessary “permissions.”
  • Verify use of a secure browsing session (https not http) in the web browser when submitting or dealing with sensitive information online.
  • Download available updates for your device and apps.
  • Avoid storing sensitive information like passwords or a social security number on your device.
  • Notify your financial institution immediately if you change your phone number or lose your mobile device.
  • Be aware of shoulder surfers. The most common form of information theft is observation. Be aware of your surrounding especially when you’re entering in sensitive information.
  • Do not use your mobile device to store sensitive personal information or bank account numbers.
  • Wipe your mobile device before you donate, sell or trade it using specialized software or using the manufacturer’s recommended technique. Some software allows you to wipe your device remotely if it is lost or stolen.

Desktop, PC or Laptop

  • Install, update and run reliable commercial anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
  • Install an actively managed firewall on your computer and/or network.
  • Ensure that your computers are patched (updated) regularly – particularly the operating system and key applications.
  • Turn on any automatic updates for the operating system, anti-virus and anti-spyware applications.
  • Limit administrative rights on your computer and network to prevent the inadvertent downloading and installation of malware or viruses.
  • Completely close and exit all web browsers before and after an online banking session to lessen the risk of certain types of sophisticated malware attacks.

Protect Your Identity

Personal Online Security Tips

Online Security

First State Bank &Trust Co., Inc. is dedicated to protecting your personal information. Listed below are several ways we keep your sensitive information safe and your online banking transactions secure. We have also included some tips to help you have a safer online transaction experience, whether it is using your FSBT online banking any other website that uses your sensitive personal information.

Online Banking Security

Encrypted Information – Any email sent to us through online banking is encrypted and requires a “key” to decode the information to be reviewed. When we respond, we encrypt this information that is then decoded by the FSBT online banking when you receive it.

Password Security – If you fail to enter the correct password after three attempts, you will be locked out of your online banking. This feature is designed to keep unauthorized persons out of your online banking account. If you have forgotten your password, please call us at (800) 877-3728 for assistance.

Because online banking security relies on password protection, it is VITAL that you keep your ID and PIN confidential. We recommend that you

  • Keep your online banking ID and password in a safe and secure place.
  • Don’t reveal your ID or PIN to anyone else, including family members.
  • Change your online banking Alias name and password periodically for extra security.
  • Don’t walk away from your computer or visit other sites without exiting completely out of your browser.
  • Turn off the autocomplete security state bank and trust that allows your browser to save usernames and passwords.

Multifactor Authentication – When you access online banking for the first time, you will be asked to select a watermark image. This image will tell you that you are logging on to our secure site. Every time you log on online banking after that, regardless of your location or device, you will see this image. If you see another image instead of the one you selected, check to make sure you are entering your correct information (e.g. is your caps lock on). If you are entering your correct information, and the image still does not match, STOP what you are doing and log out. Call us at (800) 877-3728 immediately.

New online banking users – After a brief monitoring period, it will ask you to set up a series of authentication questions. You may be asked to answer these questions from time to time if you are banking from a new location or if the activity you complete seems out of the ordinary for you.

Please Note america ferrera twitter Our iPhone app will not work until the challenge questions are set up. To use the app right away please contact us at (800) 877-3828.

Automatic Log-Off – If you remain inactive during your online banking session for a period of time, you will be asked to sign back in before you can proceed.

Website Security

Secured Website – When you access online banking, or any page on our bank’s website, the pages are located on a secured server. You will notice all our pages start with https:// - the “s” stands for secure.

In addition, we use Pharming Shield to monitor our website 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Pharming Shield detects the widest variety of pharming and identity theft activity, providing protection against website hijacking, website defacement, SSL theft and man-in-the-middle attacks.

Online Applications and Forms – Our online applications and forms are located on secured servers. All the forms and applications are sent via a secure connection. If you are having trouble submitting your online application or form, please call us at (800) 877-3728. Please DO NOT submit your form or application through regular (unsecured) email.

Email – We strongly recommend that you do not include sensitive or personal information through regular email channels. This includes Social Security numbers, account numbers security state bank and trust credit card numbers. This also includes forms or applications with sensitive information. Unsecured email can be intercepted by malicious parties. If you need to give us this information, please call us at (800) 877-3728.

Recommended Browsers

In order to maintain data security in an internet environment, online banking requires the use of a browser with 128-bit encryption technology. Our website and mobile website work best with Internet Explorer 9 or higher, Safari 5.1.7 or higher, Google Chrome 40 or higher and Firefox 34 or higher. 128-bit encryption must be enabled on these browsers.

For additional data security, if a user takes no action in online banking for 10 minutes, the user will automatically be logged off and asked to sign back in.

PASSWORD TIPS

  1. Try to use a password that you can remember without writing it down. Instead of writing down your password, security state bank and trust down a word or phrase that will remind you of the actual password.
  2. Choose a password that is not too closely associated with yourself. Personal information such as addresses, telephone numbers, family or pet names, and local sports teams are easily guessed, and, therefore, make poor passwords.
  3. Longer passwords are tougher to crack therefore we require passwords 8-12 characters in length. Use a combination of both upper and lower case letters and numbers.
  4. Avoid single dictionary words.
  5. Never enter passwords with someone else looking at your keyboard or screen.
  6. If you even suspect a leak, change your password.

Ideas for creating passwords:

  1. Use combinations of two or more short and unrelated dictionary words, preferably with numbers or other characters mixed in (for example, "CAT$PIE", "BAG3WET"). Or, try replacing letters with similar numbers that you can remember using (replace the letter I with the number 1, or the letter O with the number zero, or the letter b with the number 8, or the letter S with the number 5, for example).
  2. Instead of single dictionary words, use the first or last letters of the words in a familiar phrase, song, or poem
  3. Use every other letter in a phrase, until you have enough letters: "So LiTtLe TiMe, So MuCh To Do" yields "SLTLTMSC".
  4. Use a word with its mirror-image, repeating or dropping letters to achieve the required length. (Examples include: "PIG#GIP#PI", "TRAD-DART", "LOG%GOL".)

First State Bank & Trust Co., Inc. will never spontaneously call, email or text you requesting your username, password, account numbers or other sensitive information. If you receive any unsolicited message claiming to be sent from First State Bank & Trust Co., Inc. or if you are not sure if a message you received was sent from First State Bank & Trust Co., Inc., please do not click on any links or attachments. Instead, call us to verify whether the call, email or text was legitimately from us.
