History

Founded in 1870 by a woman, Bathsheba A. Benedict, Benedict College is a private co-educational liberal arts institution with 1,738 students enrolled in its 25 baccalaureate degree programs during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Benedict College, originally Benedict Institute, was founded 148 years ago under the auspices of the American Baptist Home Mission Society. As Benedict’s first philanthropist, Mrs. Benedict of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, provided $13,000 towards the purchase of an 80-acre plantation near Columbia, South Carolina as the site for a new school for the recently freed people of African descent. Benedict Institute, operating in a former slave master’s mansion, was established, in the words of its founder to prepare men and women to be a “power for good in society.”

During the first quarter century of its existence, Benedict Institute directed its educational programs to the severely limited economic and social conditions of the black population in the South. The Institute’s original objective was to educate and train teachers and preachers, therefore, Benedict’s first curriculum included reading, writing, spelling, arithmetic, and religion. Later, the curriculum was expanded to include traditional college disciplines, which also included an industrial department offering carpentry, shoemaking, printing, and painting.

On November 2, 1894, the South Carolina Legislature chartered the institution as a liberal arts college and the name “Benedict Institute” was formally changed to “Benedict College.”

From its founding, Benedict College was led by a succession of northern white Baptist ministers and educators. However, the year 1930 signaled the succession of African-American male presidents that continued until June 30, 2017, when Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis was unanimously appointed by the Benedict College Board of Trustees as the 14th President of Benedict College. She is the fourteenth and first-female President in the 148-year history of the college.

Benedict College has been highly regarded and exceptionally ranked for its programs by several academic and traditional publications. For example, Benedict College was ranked as one of the top baccalaureate colleges in the nation by Washington Monthly magazine for creating social mobility, producing cutting-edge scholarship, and research.

Benedict College has also been named a Historically Black College & University (HBCU) of the Year by HBCU Digest. Benedict College is proud to be part of the rich, HBCU tradition. HBCUs were originally founded to provide opportunities for African Americans who were excluded from the majority of college solely by virtue of their race. Benedict offers several high-demand fields of study in STEM, Cyber Security, Mass Communication, Sport Management, Business Administration, Engineering, Computer Science, Biology, and Education. Benedict has a diverse faculty of which 80 percent are full-time, and 60 percent hold doctorates or the equivalent.

There are over 17,000 proud Benedict Tigers throughout the nation. Benedict College has been a community leader for over 148-years and is a significant contributor to the region and South Carolina, with a local and annual economic impact of over $130 million.

Going against trends, Benedict College has enrolled 50% male students while maintaining an equal female population. This Midlands HBCU welcomes students from all 46 counties in South Carolina, 30 states across America, and 26 countries across the world.

The College made front-page news in the spring of 2018 when it became the first South Carolina college to lower its tuition by 26 percent. Cutting tuition drew praise from the Commission on Higher Education, South Carolina’s education oversight body. The commissioner noted the move that Benedict College has made should be applauded because it offers students more access to higher education and affordability.

In March 2018, Benedict College hosted South Carolina HBCU presidents, in collaboration with the White House Initiative on HBCUs and UNCF with the goal to change the narrative on the impact of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin, a member of the Benedict College Board of Trustees, joined the 8 South Carolina HBCU presidents in examining a recently released landmark study commissioned by UNCF, HBCUs Make America Strong: The Positive Economic Impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The report demonstrates that Benedict College is a valuable economic engine in the community, generating substantial financial returns year after year, contributing $130 million and 1,218 jobs in total economic impact. A Benedict graduate working full-time throughout his or her working life can expect to earn $1.1 million in additional income because of their Benedict College degree.

The Lander University Story

Rev. Samuel Lander

Lander University was founded as a college for women by Methodist clergyman Samuel Lander in 1872, as Williamston Female College in Williamston, South Carolina. It remained a private institution for 26 years.

In 1898, the college gained the support of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1904, the college was relocated to Greenwood, S.C., and was renamed Lander College in honor of its founder.

Men were admitted in 1943, and the institution is now completely coeducational.

In 1948, when the Methodist Conference, pursuant to a policy of consolidation in its education efforts, decided to end support of Lander College, interested citizens of Greenwood formed The Lander Foundation as a nonprofit corporation and leased the college from the church.

In 1951, the county of Greenwood obtained the College name and property from the Methodist Conference. The South Carolina General Assembly created the Greenwood County Education Commission, known as The Lander Foundation, to serve as the board of control for the College. Lander thus became the only four-year liberal arts college in the United States to be controlled and financed by a county government.

On July 1, 1973, Lander College came under the control of the Board of Trustees of the State Colleges of South Carolina, making Lander a state-assisted college. The State College Board of Black and white image of Lander University Trustees governed Lander, the College of Charleston, and Francis Marion College. Effective July 1, 1988, governance of Lander was vested in the Lander College Board of Trustees.

On July 1, 1992, by action of the Board of Trustees, the institution became Lander University.

The University has been served by twelve presidents: Samuel Lander (1872-1904); John O. Willson (1904-1923); B. Rhett Turnipseed (1923-1927); R. H. Bennett (1927-1932); John W. Speake (1932-1941); John Marvin Rast (1941-1948); Boyce M. Grier (1948-1966); E. Don Herd, Jr. (1966-1973); Larry A. Jackson (1973-1992); William C. Moran (1992-2000); Daniel W. Ball (2000-2015); and Richard E. Cosentino (2015-present).

Board of Trustee Annual Public Forum

The Carteret Community College Board of Trustees hold an annual public forum once a year in August. Those interested in speaking at the annual forum should submit a Request to Speak by following the link below.

2021-2022 Board of Trustees

Mr. Comer was appointed to the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees by the Board of Education at the end of 2019.  A retired realtor, he also developed resort communities in the western end of the county, specializing in RV Resorts.  He has had a real estate license since 1988 and plans to reenter the workforce soon.  He graduated from Rosewood High in Wayne County and NC State University with a BS in engineering. He is currently a County Commissioner.

He has been married to Donna for 34 years, and they have two sons, Harold Russell Comer II and Ryan Marshall Comer. He also considers his dogs as family.   His hobbies include boating, fishing (especially tournament fishing), traveling, and exercising.

He has been involved in civic clubs since college graduation. He received the Brownfield Award his first year in the Jaycees.  He joined the Swansboro Rotary in 1996 and has served at all levels. He says it “is still a joy to participate and help others.”   He has received many honors and awards over the years for civic and public service work, adding “I was just proud and glad to do it.” His biggest reason for wanting to serve on the Board of Trustees is “to help steer and encourage curriculum that complements the need in our community today. I want to be acutely aware of workforce needs so that the college will be able to adjust to constantly changing needs.”

Michael Curtis of Cape Carteret joined the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees in 2014. He was appointed by the Carteret County Board of Commissioners and reappointed in 2018. Mr. Curtis currently practices law in Cape Carteret, concentrating in employment law.  He was the town attorney for Cape Carteret from 2007-2018.

Mr. Curtis is a graduate of Villanova University School of Law where he was awarded his juris doctor degree in 1989. Mr. Curtis received his baccalaureate degree in history, magna cum laude, from Boston University in 1986 and his associate degree, with highest honors, from Cape Cod Community College in 1984. Since graduating from law school, Mr. Curtis has been admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania (1989), New Jersey (1989), Massachusetts (1995), and North Carolina (2002).

Mr. Curtis is a United States Navy veteran. He retired from the United States Navy Reserves as a Lieutenant Commander (Cryptology). He was twice the recipient of the Navy Meritorious Commendation Medal; twice recipient of the Navy Achievement Medal; recipient of the Overseas Service Medal; recipient of the Humanitarian Service Medal; recipient of the Global War on Terrorism Medal; recipient of the Navy Good Conduct Medal; and several other service medals and awards. Mr. Curtis serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Western Carteret Interlocal Agency and as a member of the Camp Lejeune Restoration Advisory Board.

Melodie Darden joined the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees in 2017. She was appointed by the Governor.  Mrs. Darden is a retired English teacher who spent her entire career at West Carteret High School, teaching every grade and level of English. As a senior English teacher for many years, in addition to teaching the basic curriculum, she also helped with college applications, scholarships, recommendation letters, and counseling advice. Mrs. Darden graduated magna cum laude with honors and distinction in English from Duke University. She earned her MA in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Darden is an avid reader, especially literary fiction, current nonfiction, mysteries, psychological thrillers and cookbooks. She loves to cook and is especially interested in food anthropology. She serves on the vestry at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Morehead City. She and her husband Rob live in Morehead City and have three adult children, Bobby, John, and Katherine.

At West Carteret High School, she was selected as the Teacher of the Year. She served as co-chair for the WCHS Accreditation Committee where she worked on School Improvement Plans and five-year accreditation renewals. She was the chair of the Scholarship Committee for many years. On the state level, she was a writer for the NC Standards In English, grades 11-12, and was a grader for honors portfolios. Mrs. Darden believes the community college provides affordable opportunities for students of all ages to improve their lives.

Beverly “June” Fulcher – Vice Chair

June Fulcher was appointed to the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees in 2018 by Governor Roy Cooper. A Carteret County native, she attended local schools– Atlantic Elementary, East Carteret High School, and Carteret Community College–earning a degree in cosmetology.  She also attended Chowan College, concentrating on business administration courses.  She spent more than 19 years back at Atlantic Elementary School, where she served as a teacher assistant, substitute teacher, and bus driver.  Currently retired, she has been a Morehead City hairdresser and the manager of her family businesses (a hotel, restaurant, camp group, grocery stores) in Cedar Island and Atlantic.

Mrs. Fulcher spent more than 30 years on the Carteret County Board of Education, serving as member, vice chair, and chair numerous times over the years.  During that time, she helped lead two successful school bond referendums.  She served as the lead and co-lead in the search and hiring of four superintendents and three interim superintendents.

Mrs. Fulcher also served on the North Carolina School Boards Association Board of Directors.  She helped train School Boards Association members through their School Boards Association Academy, and she was honored by being selected as a member of the North Carolina School Boards Association Honorary All-State School Board.

Mrs. Fulcher values collaboration, communication, and “forward thinking.”  She enjoys spending time with her family at their mountain home.

Bill Henderson has been a member of the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees since 1995. He is a past chairman and currently serves on the Building and Grounds, Finance, and Executive Committees. His appointments have been by the Carteret County Board of Education. Mr. Henderson is one of the owners of H & H Electric Service, Inc. He also has ownership interest in The Bookshop New and Used and Little 9 Storage, LLC. All businesses are located in Morehead City. He is a 1978 graduate of West Carteret High School and was awarded a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Operations from North Carolina State University in 1982.

Mr. Henderson is married to the former Beth Avery, and they have three adult children: Averi, Jenna, and William, who are all graduates of Croatan High School and North Carolina State University. Averi is married to Grant Linderman, lives in Raleigh, and they have three children.  Jenna, a logistics analyst, and William, a CPA at RSM, LLC, both live in Carteret County.  Mr. Henderson and his wife are active in St. James United Methodist Church in Newport, where he currently serves as Chairperson of Finance, President of the United Methodist Men, and leads an adult Sunday School class. He also has been active over the years working with local sports leagues serving in a variety of roles. He is a member of NC State’s Wolfpack Club, Alumni Association, and Varsity Club.

Mr. Henderson’s role as a trustee enabled him to be part of the largest construction and modernization effort in the college’s history following the passage of the Higher Education Bond Referendums in 2000. Mr. Henderson and his fellow trustees oversaw construction and renovation projects totaling $15 million, which allowed the college to expand learning opportunities in health science, marine trades, business technologies, applied marine science, and a variety of occupational training courses under continuing education.  As a trustee, he has also been involved in curriculum program development and has helped with the implementation of a variety of programs including: associate degree nursing, aquaculture technology, boat manufacture and service, culinary arts, therapeutic massage, and others. “I believe Carteret Community College needs to be on the forefront of change in Carteret County,” said Mr. Henderson. “The college is an asset for our county and has helped many people reach their goals, improve their lives, and create a better quality of life for themselves and their families.”

Mary Charles Jenkins – Trustee

Mary Charles Jenkins joined the Board of Trustees in 2020 after being appointed by Governor Roy Cooper. She grew up in Greenville, graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, and has resided in Morehead City for almost three decades. Jenkins worked in bank marketing, and retired as Marketing Manager for Sound Bank (now Dogwood State Bank). After taking pottery courses at ECU and CCC, she has become an avid potter and participates annually in the Empty Bowls program in support of Hope Mission and Martha’s Mission.

Mary Charles is married to retired Special Superior Court Judge Jack Jenkins. They have two children. Jacob, their oldest, graduated from UCLA and works in Denver, Colorado. Anna is an NCSU graduate and an instructor at the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science in Durham.  Mrs. Jenkins has been involved in a variety of civic endeavors in Pitt, Wake, and Carteret Counties. She has volunteered countless hours in schools tutoring, organizing science fairs, making and manning games for fall carnivals, planning learning experiences for classrooms, and teaching enrichment art classes. Jenkins also served on the local Habitat for Humanity board and organized build days for Sound Bank employees. She has organized multiple Red Cross Blood Drives, served as National Charity League liaison for PAWS and Encore Pets, and acted as crafts director at summer bible schools.

Mary Charles loves everything Carteret County has to offer, including boating on Bogue Sound, meeting friends at Bird Shoals or Cape Lookout, hiking the Fort Macon trails, sampling local products at the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market in Beaufort, eating at the many fine local restaurants, and especially taking classes at Carteret Community College.

Rosa Langston joined the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees in 2019. She was appointed by the Governor. Mrs. Langston is a retired educator, beginning in 1972 with Carteret County Schools.  She presently works with the United Methodist Church P4P Reading Program, a reading program for elementary students, as a counselor. She has also enjoyed substitute teaching after retirement, which enables her “to keep abreast of students’ needs and trends in education in the global economy in which we live.” She has a B.S. and M.S. degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University in Greensboro, NC. These degrees and certifications include comprehensive business education, guidance and counseling, exceptional children, and career development coordination. During her 37 years of service to schools in Carteret County, Mrs. Langston has worked at the middle, high, and community college levels.

She resides in Newport with her husband, Von, and they have two adult sons, Dedan and Bakari. African American History, sewing, and gardening are among her hobbies.

Highlights of her career include serving as past president of Carteret County NCAE, President of the North Carolina Vocational Special Needs Division, and a member of the Board on the North Carolina Vocational Association. She has been honored by being selected West Carteret High School Certified Employee of the Year and Carteret County Woman Educator of the Year.

Mrs. Langston is a member and president of Les Vingt Femmes Women Club of Carteret County, Northeastern Vice President of North Carolina Association of Colored Women, a member of the National Association of Colored Women and a member of the W. S. King Alumni Association. Mrs. Langston is a passionate advocate for education. She feels it “is the vehicle which drives the happiness and prosperity of all of our nation’s people. It is and will continue to be what helps to make our nation great.”

Dee Meshaw was appointed to the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees in 2020 by the Carteret County Commissioners.  She is the assistant county manager. She is a graduate of Peace College and NC State University, earning a degree in accounting.

Mrs. Meshaw enjoys playing the piano and gardening.  Walking and hiking, especially in the mountains, and reading, especially history, are other favorite activities.  She and her husband Greg have one daughter, Lizzie.  “Spending time with Greg and Lizzie is what I enjoy most,” she says.

Mrs. Meshaw is a member of the NC Association of Certified Public Accountants and the NC Government Finance Officers Association, having served as its president in 2014-2015.  She is an active member of First United Methodist Church in Morehead City, where she has served on various committees. She  is currently serving on the church’s finance committee. She has also been a lay leader and children’s Sunday School teacher.

Catherine W. Parker – Trustee

Catherine Wood Parker served on the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees for a 4-year term, appointed by the Governor, from July 2013 until June 2017. In October 2018, Mrs. Parker returned to the Board of Trustees to fulfill an unexpired term, appointed by the Carteret County Board of Education. Mrs. Parker currently works in outside sales and public relations for their family business, Parker Buick GMC and Parker Honda. She also works with Wood Insurance Consultants selling personal and commercial insurance policies. Mrs. Parker graduated from North Carolina State University in 2004 with a bachelor of science degree in Accounting with a Financial Analysis concentration. While at NC State University, she completed a semester study abroad with Griffith University in Australia.  She was awarded her masters in Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C., in 2007.

She and her husband, Brian, General Manager of Parker Buick GMC, have three children ages 5, 7, and 9. Mrs. Parker believes strongly in education and knows what an impact continuing education can do to better the lives of individual families, as well as promoting new opportunities within our community.

Mrs. Parker is experienced in financial analysis, particularly working with healthcare and hospitals. She worked as a financial analyst for Duke University Hospital in Durham, where she prepared and supported the annual budget for the Heart Clinical Service Unit with annual revenue of $370 million. Additionally, she served as a liaison between Duke Hospital Finance and Operations and the hospital’s heart inpatient units and cardiology labs performing financial analysis for several capital projects greater than $1 million. In addition to regularly scheduled financial and statistical analysis, she prepared five-year financial plans for Duke Health System Board of Directors. She also prepared Duke Hospital’s NC Hospital License Applications. Mrs. Parker joined Carteret General Hospital in 2008 as a Quality Data Cost Analyst.  A year later she was promoted to Director of Decision Support and continued to support the hospital until 2012. She developed business plans and presented data and information to hospital leadership, expanding transparency and access to data for decision making.

Matt Zettl was appointed by the Board of Education to the CCC Board of Trustees in 2010. Dr. Zettl is a retired orthopedic surgeon, originally from Cleveland, OH. He has lived in Carteret County since 1980. He received a B.S. Degree from Tulane University in 1971, and an M.D. Degree from Tulane in 1975. He completed a five-year orthopedic residency training program at Carolinas Medical Center and Orthopedic Hospital of Charlotte in 1980. He served as Board Chairman for two terms from 2016-2018

Dr. Zettl has been married to his wife, Vickie, for 38 years. They have one daughter, Kathryn Muros, an occupational therapist living in San Francisco, CA with her husband Chris. Kathryn attended public school in Carteret County from kindergarten until her graduation from West Carteret High School in 2005.

Since retiring, Dr. Zettl has spent much of his time as a furniture maker. He is a member of the Piedmont Craftsmen, and his work has been shown in galleries across North Carolina. He has done commissioned work for clients in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic. He is also a member of the Morehead City Lookout Rotary Club. He enjoys skiing, motorcycling, cooking, and craft beer. Dr. Zettl is an enthusiastic advocate of the community college system, and Carteret Community College in particular. He understands and believes in the opportunities that CCC brings to all of the citizens of Carteret County, from K12 students to senior citizens.

Johnson O. Akinleye, Ph.D., was elected as the 12th Chancellor of North Carolina Central University on June 26, 2017. Through his leadership, Dr. Akinleye has worked to expand the university’s academic partnerships, including new agreements with community colleges, and introduced to the campus a robust online, distance-education program (NCCU Online), K-12 initiatives, and a security strategy to increase safety for campus constituents.

History

The Lander University Story

Rev. Samuel Lander

Lander University was founded as a college for women by Methodist clergyman Samuel Lander in 1872, as Williamston Female College in Williamston, South Carolina. It remained a private institution for 26 years.

In 1898, the college gained the support of the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1904, the college was relocated to Greenwood, S.C., and was renamed Lander College in honor of its founder.

Men were admitted in 1943, and the institution is now completely coeducational.

In 1948, when the Methodist Conference, pursuant to a policy of consolidation in its education efforts, decided to end support of Lander College, interested citizens of Greenwood formed The Lander Foundation as a nonprofit corporation and leased the college from the church.

In 1951, the county of Greenwood obtained the College name and property from the Methodist Conference. The South Carolina General Assembly created the Greenwood County Education Commission, known as The Lander Foundation, to serve as the board of control for the College. Lander thus became the only four-year liberal arts college in the United States to be controlled and financed by a county government.

On July 1, 1973, Lander College came under the control of the Board of Trustees of the State Colleges south carolina state university college board South Carolina, making Lander a state-assisted college. The State College Board of Black and white image of Lander University Trustees governed Lander, the College of Charleston, and Francis Marion College. Effective July 1, 1988, governance of Lander was vested in the Lander College Board of Trustees.

On July 1, 1992, by action of the Board of Trustees, the institution became Lander University.

The University has been served by twelve presidents: Samuel Lander (1872-1904); John O. Willson (1904-1923); B. Rhett Turnipseed (1923-1927); R. H. Bennett (1927-1932); John W. Speake (1932-1941); John Marvin Rast (1941-1948); Boyce M. Grier (1948-1966); E. Don Herd, Jr. (1966-1973); Larry A. Jackson (1973-1992); William C. Moran (1992-2000); Daniel W. Ball (2000-2015); and Richard E. Cosentino (2015-present).

CSS Financial Aid PROFILE Codes

The CSS PROFILE is required by many private colleges and universities to determine your eligibility for non-government financial aid, such as the institution’s own grants, loans and scholarships.

The biggest differences between the CSS PROFILE and the FAFSA are:

  • Submission dates: The CSS PROFILE can be submitted in the fall; The CSS PROFILE can be submitted in the fall; and beginning in 2016 the FAFSA can be submitted as early as October 1st.
  • Specific questions: The CSS PROFILE contains questions schlotzskys to the school or program you’re applying to; FAFSA contains the same questions for everyone.
  • Different methodology: The CSS PROFILE determines your financial need differently than the FAFSA, taking into account such factors as whether your family owns a home. In general, the CSS PROFILE asks for more detailed information than FAFSA.
  • Minimum student contribution: The CSS PROFILE requires this; the FAFSA doesn’t.
  • Greater reliance on professional judgment: The CSS PROFILE gives financial aid counselors greater freedom to grant aid based on a student’s particular circumstances.
  • Cost: There is a cost to filling out the CSS Profile, though some families may qualify for fee waivers; the FAFSA, as the name implies, is free.

Board of Trustee Annual Public Forum

2021-2022 Board of Trustees

Mr. Comer was appointed to the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees by the Board of Education at the end of 2019.  A retired realtor, he also developed resort communities in the western end of the county, specializing in RV Resorts.  He has had a real estate license since 1988 and plans to reenter the workforce soon.  He graduated from Rosewood High in Wayne County and NC State University with a BS in engineering. He is currently a County Commissioner.

He has been married to Donna for 34 years, and they have two sons, Harold Russell Comer II and Ryan Marshall Comer. He also considers his dogs as family.   His hobbies include boating, fishing (especially tournament fishing), traveling, and exercising.

He has been involved in civic clubs since college graduation. He received south carolina state university college board Brownfield Award his first year in the Jaycees.  He joined the Swansboro Rotary in 1996 and has served at all levels. He says it “is still a joy to participate and help others.”   He has received many honors and awards over the years for civic and public service work, adding “I was just proud and glad to do it.” His biggest reason for wanting to serve on the Board of Trustees is “to help steer and encourage curriculum that complements the need in our community today. I want to be acutely aware of workforce needs so that the college will be able to adjust to constantly changing needs.”

Michael Curtis of Cape Carteret joined the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees in 2014. He was appointed by the Carteret County Board of Commissioners and reappointed in 2018. Mr. Curtis currently practices law in Cape Carteret, concentrating in employment law.  He was the town attorney for Cape Carteret from 2007-2018.

Mr. Curtis is a graduate of Villanova University School of Law where he was awarded his juris doctor degree in 1989. Mr. Curtis received his baccalaureate degree in history, magna cum laude, from Boston University in 1986 and his associate degree, with highest honors, from Cape Cod Community College in 1984. Since graduating from law school, Mr. Curtis has been admitted to practice law in Pennsylvania (1989), New Jersey (1989), Massachusetts (1995), and North Carolina (2002).

Mr. Curtis is a United States Navy veteran. He retired from the United States Navy Reserves as a Lieutenant Commander (Cryptology). He was twice the recipient of the Navy Meritorious Commendation Medal; twice recipient of the Navy Achievement Medal; recipient of the Overseas Service Medal; recipient of the Humanitarian Service Medal; recipient of the Global War on Terrorism Medal; recipient of the Navy Good Conduct Medal; and several jojo heritage for the future online multiplayer service medals and awards. Mr. Curtis serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Western Carteret Interlocal Agency and as a member of the Camp Lejeune Restoration Advisory Board.

Melodie Darden joined the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees in 2017. She was appointed by the Governor.  Mrs. Darden is a retired English teacher who spent her entire career at West Carteret High School, teaching every grade and level of English. As a senior English teacher for many years, in addition to teaching the basic curriculum, she also helped with college applications, scholarships, recommendation letters, and counseling advice. Mrs. Darden graduated magna cum laude with honors and distinction in English from Duke University. She earned her MA in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Darden is an avid reader, especially literary fiction, current nonfiction, mysteries, psychological thrillers and cookbooks. She loves to cook and is especially interested in food anthropology. She serves on the vestry at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Morehead City. She and her husband Rob live in Morehead City and have three adult children, Bobby, John, and Katherine.

At West Carteret High School, she was selected as the Teacher of the Year. She served as co-chair for the WCHS Accreditation Committee where she worked on School Improvement Plans and five-year accreditation renewals. She was the chair of the Scholarship Committee for many years. On the state level, she was a writer for the NC Standards In English, grades 11-12, and was a grader for honors portfolios. Mrs. Darden believes the community college provides affordable opportunities for students of all ages to improve their lives.

Beverly “June” Fulcher – Vice Chair

June Fulcher was appointed to the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees in 2018 by Governor Roy Cooper. A Carteret County native, she attended local schools– Atlantic Elementary, East Carteret High School, and Carteret Community College–earning a degree in cosmetology.  She also attended Chowan College, concentrating on business administration courses.  She spent more than 19 years back at Atlantic Elementary School, where she served as a teacher assistant, substitute teacher, and bus driver.  Currently retired, she has been a Morehead City hairdresser and the manager of her family businesses (a hotel, restaurant, camp group, grocery stores) in Cedar Island and Atlantic.

Mrs. Fulcher spent more than 30 years on the Carteret County Board of Education, serving as member, vice chair, and chair numerous times over the years.  During that time, she helped lead two successful school bond referendums.  She served as the lead and co-lead in the search and hiring of four superintendents and three interim superintendents.

Mrs. Fulcher also served on the North Carolina School Boards Association Board of Directors.  She helped train School Boards Association members through their School Boards Association Academy, and she was honored by being selected as a member of the North Carolina School Boards Association Honorary All-State School Board.

Mrs. Fulcher values collaboration, communication, and “forward thinking.”  South state bank routing number myrtle beach enjoys spending time with her family at their mountain home.

Bill Henderson has been a member of the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees since 1995. He is a past chairman and currently serves on the Building and Grounds, Finance, and Executive Committees. His appointments have been by the Carteret County Board of Education. Mr. Henderson is one of the owners south carolina state university college board H & H Electric Service, Inc. He also has ownership interest in The Bookshop New and Used and Little 9 Storage, LLC. All businesses are located in Morehead City. Mr. Henderson is married to the former Beth Avery, and they have three adult children: Averi, Jenna, and William, who are all graduates of Croatan High School walmart eye exam near me North Carolina State University. Mr. Henderson’s role as a trustee enabled him to be part of the largest construction and modernization effort in the college’s history following the passage of the Higher Education Bond Referendums in 2000. Mr. Henderson and his fellow trustees oversaw construction and renovation projects totaling $15 million, which allowed the college to expand learning opportunities in health science, marine trades, business technologies, applied marine science, and a variety of occupational training courses under continuing education.  As a trustee, he has also been involved in curriculum program development and has helped with the implementation of a variety of programs including: associate degree nursing, aquaculture technology, boat manufacture and service, culinary arts, therapeutic massage, and others. “I believe Carteret Community College needs to be on the forefront of change in Carteret County,” said Mr. Henderson. “The college is an asset for our county and has helped many people reach their goals, improve their lives, and create a better quality of life for themselves and their families.”

Mary Charles Jenkins – Trustee

Mary Charles Jenkins joined the Board of Trustees in 2020 after being appointed by Governor Roy Cooper. She grew up in Greenville, graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, and has resided in Morehead City for almost three decades. Jenkins worked in bank marketing, and retired as Marketing Manager for Sound Bank (now Dogwood State Bank). After taking pottery courses at ECU and CCC, she has become an avid potter and participates annually in the Empty Bowls program in support of Hope Mission and Martha’s Mission.

Mary Charles is married to retired Special Superior Court Judge Jack Jenkins. They have two children. Jacob, their oldest, graduated from UCLA and works in Denver, Colorado. Anna is an NCSU graduate and an instructor at the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science in Durham.  Mrs. Jenkins has been involved in a variety of civic endeavors in Pitt, Wake, and Carteret Counties. She has volunteered countless hours in schools tutoring, organizing science fairs, making and manning games for fall carnivals, planning learning experiences for classrooms, and teaching enrichment art classes. Jenkins also served on the south carolina state university college board Habitat for Humanity board and organized build days for Sound Bank employees. She has organized multiple Red Cross Blood Drives, served as National Charity League liaison for PAWS and Encore Pets, and acted as crafts director at summer bible schools.

Mary Charles loves everything Carteret County has to offer, including boating on Bogue Sound, meeting friends at Bird Shoals or Cape Lookout, hiking the Fort Macon trails, sampling local products at the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market in Beaufort, eating at the many fine local restaurants, and especially taking classes at Carteret Community College.

Rosa Langston joined the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees in 2019. She was appointed by the Governor. Mrs. Langston is a retired educator, beginning in 1972 with Carteret County Schools.  She presently works with the United Methodist Church P4P Reading Program, a reading program for elementary students, as a counselor. She has also enjoyed substitute teaching after retirement, which enables her “to keep abreast of students’ needs and trends in education in the global economy in which we live.” She has a B.S. and M.S. degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University in Greensboro, NC. These degrees and certifications include comprehensive business education, guidance and counseling, exceptional children, and career development coordination. During her 37 years of service to schools in Carteret County, Mrs. Langston has worked at the middle, high, and community college levels.

She resides in Newport with her husband, Von, and they have two adult sons, Dedan and Bakari. African American History, sewing, and gardening are among her hobbies.

Highlights of her career include serving as past president of Carteret County NCAE, President of the North Carolina Vocational Special Needs Division, and a member of the Board on the North Carolina Vocational Association. She has been honored by being selected West Carteret High School Certified Employee of the Year and Carteret South carolina state university college board Woman Educator of the Year.

Mrs. Langston is a member and president of Les Vingt Femmes Women Club of Carteret County, Northeastern Vice President of North Carolina Association of Colored Women, south carolina state university college board member of the National Association of Colored Women and a member of the W. S. King Alumni Association. Mrs. Langston is a passionate advocate for education. She feels it “is the vehicle which drives the happiness and prosperity of all of our nation’s people. It is and will continue to be what helps to make our nation great.”

Dee Meshaw was appointed to the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees in 2020 by the Carteret County Commissioners.  She is the assistant county manager. She is a graduate of Peace College and NC State University, earning a degree in accounting.

Mrs. Meshaw enjoys playing the piano and gardening.  Walking and hiking, especially boone county ky court records the mountains, and reading, especially history, are other favorite activities.  She and her husband Greg have one daughter, Lizzie.  “Spending time with Greg and Lizzie is what I enjoy most,” she says.

Mrs. Meshaw is a member of the NC Association of Certified Public Accountants and the NC Government Finance Officers Association, having served as its president in 2014-2015.  She is an active member of First United Methodist Church in Morehead City, where she has served on various committees. She  is currently serving on the church’s finance committee. She has also been a lay leader and children’s Sunday School teacher.

Catherine Wood Parker served on the Carteret Community College Board of Trustees for a 4-year term, appointed by the Governor, from July 2013 until June 2017. In October 2018, Mrs. Parker returned to the Board of Trustees to fulfill an unexpired term, appointed by the Carteret County Board of Education. Mrs. Parker currently works in outside sales and public relations for their family business, Parker Buick GMC and Parker Honda. She also works with Wood Insurance Consultants selling personal and commercial insurance policies. Mrs. Parker graduated from North Carolina State University in 2004 with a bachelor of science degree in Accounting with a Financial Analysis concentration. While at NC State University, she completed a semester study abroad with Griffith University in Australia.  She was awarded her masters in Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C., in 2007.

She and her husband, Brian, General Manager of Parker Buick GMC, have three children ages 5, 7, and 9. Mrs. Parker believes strongly in education and knows what an impact continuing education can do to better the lives of individual families, as well as promoting new opportunities within our community.

Mrs. Parker is population of north and south america in financial analysis, particularly working with healthcare and hospitals. She worked as a financial analyst for Duke University Hospital in Durham, where she prepared and supported the annual budget for the Heart Clinical Service Unit with annual revenue of $370 million. Additionally, she served as a liaison between Duke Hospital Finance and Operations and the hospital’s heart inpatient units and cardiology labs performing financial analysis for several capital projects greater than $1 million. In addition to regularly scheduled financial and statistical analysis, she prepared five-year financial plans for Duke Health System Board of Directors. She also prepared Duke Hospital’s NC Hospital License Applications. Mrs. Parker extended stay america monthly rates Carteret General Hospital in 2008 as a Quality Data Cost Analyst.  A year later she was promoted to Director of Decision Support and continued to support the hospital until 2012. She developed business plans and presented data and information to hospital leadership, expanding transparency and access to data for decision making.

Matt Zettl was appointed by the Board of Education to the CCC Board of Trustees in 2010. Dr. Zettl is a retired orthopedic surgeon, originally from Cleveland, OH. He has lived in Carteret County since 1980. He received a B.S. Degree from Tulane University in 1971, and an M.D. Degree from Tulane in 1975. He completed a five-year orthopedic residency training program at Carolinas Medical Center and Orthopedic Hospital of Charlotte in 1980. He served as Board Chairman for two terms from 2016-2018

Dr. Zettl has been married to his wife, Vickie, for 38 years. They have one daughter, Kathryn Muros, an occupational therapist living in San Francisco, CA with her husband Chris. Kathryn attended public school in Carteret County from kindergarten until her graduation from West Carteret High School in 2005.

Since retiring, Dr. Zettl has spent much of his time as a furniture maker. He is a member of the Piedmont Craftsmen, and his work has been shown in galleries across North Carolina. He has done commissioned work for clients in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic. He is also a member of the Morehead City Lookout Rotary Club. He enjoys skiing, motorcycling, cooking, and craft beer. Dr. Zettl is an enthusiastic advocate of the community college system, and Carteret Community College in particular. He understands and believes in the opportunities that CCC brings to all of the citizens of Carteret County, from K12 students to senior citizens.
