South Dakota State Pulls Off Incredible 'Fake QB Sneak' Trick Play for Touchdown

Despite facing the No. 2 FCS team in the country in rival North Dakota State, No. 9 South Dakota State showed that it dared to go bold in attempting a red-zone trick play on fourth-and-1.

Not only did the fake quarterback sneak work, it resulted in a touchdown and went viral in the process.

On fourth-and-1 at the NDSU 11-yard line, with just over two minutes left in the half, the Jackrabbits center snapped the ball between the legs of quarterback Chris Oladokun to running back Pierre Strong Jr. in the backfield. While Oladokun pressed forward as if to gain the one yard needed for the first down, Strong Jr. stayed low with the ball before his jump pass found Tucker Kraft in the end zone for the touchdown.

The touchdown gave South Dakota State a double-digit lead heading into halftime over its undefeated rivals, who in recent years produced the likes of NFL quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Trey Lance.

However, it's not the most bizarre thing to happen over the football weekend at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. On Friday, a moose ran loose around the South Dakota State campus as state police worked to corral the animal. The wild moose ended up sprinting across the football field where the two rivals would face off later Saturday.

“Students please be careful right now if you are out and driving around,” South Dakota State Police posted on Facebook. “There are several law enforcement officers out attempting (to) [sic] the animal and move it out of town to keep it safe.

"This is not a joke."

It was an eventful weekend in Brookings, S.D., to say the least.

NFL QB prospect Trey Lance will get to play in 2020 thanks to North Dakota State's weird scheduling

North Dakota State football on Aug. 14 announced it would not play in the fall of 2020. Joining several college football conferences and teams that had made similar decisions, the program said it would "turn its attention toward" playing in the spring of 2021.

This relatively widespread trend in college football amid the COVID-19 pandemic is a nightmare for NFL scouts who know many of the top prospects likely will pass on a spring football season that would conflict with the league's draft process. So those who are hoping to catch a glimpse of North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft might be catching a break.

According to Yahoo! Sports' Pete Thamel, the Bison recently scheduled an Oct. 3 home game against Central Arkansas for what would be their only game this fall.

MORE: Explaining all college football cancellations

"The game allows North Dakota State to essentially have full 'spring practice' in the fall, with 20-hour practice weeks," Thamel writes. "Instead of NDSU’s 'spring practice' culminating with a scrimmage against each other, the Bison will play Central Arkansas, a formidable FCS foe."

The report notes that it's unclear whether NFL scouts will be allowed to attend the game in Fargo on Oct. 3. Regardless, assuming Lance plays, it will be appointment viewing for pro football talent evaluators.

Lance had an absurd redshirt freshman season for the Bison in 2019, his first full year as starter. He led NDSU to an undefeated record and its eighth FCS national championship in the last nine years. He completed 66.9 percent of his passes for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns and 0 interceptions for a rating of 180.6. He also led the team in rushing with 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns.

“I’d be shocked if he’s not a top-15 pick,” one NFL area scout told Yahoo Sports. “I think he’s going to be right up in the top five with Justin Fields and Trevor Lawrence.”

Added another pro scout who attended one of Lance's games last season: "I saw him throw one football and I immediately started texting our guys, asking, ‘Who the f— is that?'"

Lance is the No. 3 overall prospect for the 2021 NFL Draft on Sporting News NFL writer Vinnie Iyer's big board, which will become available Tuesday. He's currently behind Lawrence and Fields.

Iyer also has Lance landing with the Panthers at No. 5 overall in his latest mock draft for 2021.

Southern Illinois vs South Dakota State FCS Playoff Game Preview

Why Southern Illinois Will Win

Southern Illinois (6-3) pulled off the mild upset on the road with a 34-31 win over Weber State on an eight-yard touchdown pass in the final seconds to move on.

The Salukis got the passing game going when they had to, QB Stone Labanowitz pulled through in the clutch, and now they get a second shot at South Dakota State after losing in late March.

While the defense wasn’t always solid against Weber State, and it took a big comeback to pull it off, the offense that was so good all year on third downs and the passing game that was so efficient got the job done.

Again, the Salukis are getting another shot at the Jackrabbits, but …

Why South Dakota State Will Win

It really wasn’t pretty the first time around.

South Dakota State (6-1) was down 3-0 to Southern Illinois. It won 44-3.

The Jackrabbits forced four turnovers, allowed just over 200 yards of total offense, and they ran and ran and ran, cranking out over 300 yards on the ground in the blowout.

They rocked Holy Cross 31-3 in the first round of the FCS Playoffs, rolling behind their great offensive line with Isaiah Davis rushing for 156 yards and a score and Mark Gronowski having all day to throw three touchdown passes.

Southern Illinois has own the trenches to pull this off. The offensive line has been great all year, but it didn’t quite dominate Weber State like it needed to – at least until late – and it’s not going to push around the South Dakota State defensive front. And …

What’s Going To Happen

The South Dakota State running game is just too strong.

This won’t be the total wipeout the first meeting was, but the Jackrabbits will get all of the parts of the backfield going right away, the defense will continue to be a rock, and the No. 1 seed in the tournament will push its way through after a rough start.

Southern Illinois will come out hot with a few early scores, but the Jackrabbits will settle in, take over the time of possession battle, and things will open up in the second half.

South Dakota vs North Dakota State Preview

The Coyotes are coming off a 23-20 Hail Mary win over South Dakota State last weekend. South Dakota QB Carson Camp completed 19 of 27 passes for 288 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, and running back Nate Thomas ran for 90 yards in a touchdown on 16 carries in a game that came down to the final seconds.

Down 20-17 with eight seconds to go, Camp heaved a 57-yard game-winner to Jeremiah Webb to seal the victory. The Coyotes have won two in a row, and five of their last six, and the dramatic overtime win may have given them an extra boost heading into this one.

“I don’t know if I’ll make much of how they won, but I will bring up that I know they’re a confident group right now and they believe they can beat anybody,” NDSU head coach Matt Entz said about SDU. “If you get a team to believe, they’ll think they can win every game and this team right now thinks they can.”

NDSU is fresh from a 49-17 trouncing of Youngstown State last weekend. Bison QB Cam Miller went 10-14 for 169 yards and two touchdowns, while North Dakota State racked up 454 yards rushing in the victory. “You want to play meaningful games this time of the year, and government travel card citibank application where we’re at,” USD head coach Bob Nielson said, per The Sioux City Journal. “It has meaning in terms of conference finish and playoff berths and that’s where you want your program to be every year heading into Week 10 or 11.”

“The win in 2019, even though it was a long what time does ollies open today ago it seems like, any time you are able to build confidence in any way for your football team, I think it’s valuable,” Nielson added. “We’ve played a lot of good teams this year. Our team knows how to beat a really good football team, and we’ll have to central illinois counties all those little things to win.”

Traxler: Transfer QB Chris Oladokun keeps South Dakota State among national title contenders

Would the Jackrabbits be good enough at quarterback to contend again for a national bmoharris com online

Chris Oladokun is answering that with a resounding yes.

The 6-foot-2 graduate transfer from Samford via South Florida has stepped in and kept the Jacks running at a high speed, helping SDSU to its first 4-0 start to a season in the Division I era and to the fringe of the Jackrabbits holding the No. 1 ranking in the country.

He’s filling the gap left by Mark Gronowski’s knee injury in the 23-21 national championship loss from May, providing a one-year stopgap and potentially allowing a healthy Gronowski to take back the starting job in 2022.

Oladokun has provided the cool confidence and command that the Jackrabbits expect at the position, with a presence in top 10 investment banks in south africa pocket and a strong arm. He brings a running element as a quarterback, a piece that has become standard in the SDSU offense.

South Dakota State University's Chris Oladokun (6) passes the ball during the Jackrabbits' game against Dixie State University during the Beef Bowl game on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021 at Dykhouse Stadium in Brookings. (Matt Gade / Republic)

SDSU coach John Stiegelmeier said this week that Oladokun has been a great leader, despite knowing next to nothing about the community or the state he was heading to when he committed to the Jacks this summer.

“Chris has been a great leader. For a guy that didn’t get here until June, I think that’s remarkable,” Stiegelmeier said. “This is about a champion. He doesn’t waste a second. (He) always focuses on the practice field and in the weight room, with his approach to his position, he draws guys to a higher level.”

Oladokun is among the national leaders in quarterbacking stats through the first five weeks of the college football season. His stats include completing 50 of 81 passes for 721 yards, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. He has receiving ryrie study bible nasb rushing touchdowns, leading the conference in points accounted for, as well. He enters this week with the second-highest quarterback efficiency rating in the FCS at 195.3.

He’s also the Missouri Valley Football Conference leader in passing yards per completion (14.42) and yards per attempt (8.9), and second in passing touchdowns.

Oladokun has been sacked just once, a product of being behind an offensive line that has more than 130 combined career starts to its name. It’s part of playing on a loaded offense, with skilled running backs, hard-to-cover tight ends, and a diverse receiving group.

On Opening South dakota state football kicker at Colorado 0.5 mm to m, he was the fourth different starting quarterback for the Jackrabbits in the last four seasons, from the end of the Taryn Christion era in 2018 to J’Bore Gibbs in 2019, to Gronowski in 2020-21 to the present with Oladokun.

Stiegelmeier said he knows that programs without a skilled quarterback are set up for struggles. But despite the turnover at quarterback, SDSU has been as strong as ever in that time, with 30 wins in 40 south dakota state football kicker, a conference title and a national runner-up finish.

“I learned a long time ago that if you don’t have a good quarterback, it's going to be a long season,” he said.

For perspective, Stiegelmeier said the team’s quarterback coach Zach Lujan, who was involved in recruiting Oladokun to Brookings and started 15 games for SDSU in the mid-2010s, called the transfer the “best quarterback he’s seen on the field” for the program.

“That doesn’t take anything away from the Austin Sumners or the Taryn Christions for the Zach Lujans or Keaton Heides or J’Bore Gibbs but it says that Chris Oladokun is a special, special player,” Stiegelmeier said.

SDSU is about to be much more challenged in the coming weeks, starting with hosting No. 8 Southern Illinois, who the Jackrabbits will play for the third time since mid-March. Also on the home schedule is No. 16 Northern Iowa (Oct. 23), No. 5 North Dakota State (Nov. 6) and No. 13 North Dakota (Nov. 20), plus a road trip to rival South Dakota (Nov. 13). Coincidentally, UNI and NDSU both have transfer quarterbacks with FBS-level experience starting this season as well.

If the Jackrabbits planned to make a title run once again, they needed an elite-level quarterback.

So far, Oladokun is showing he is the guy.
