We at ERICON broker understand the needs and troubles military personnel find themselves in when first arriving in Germany or Belgium (SHAPE), seeking to purchase affordable insurance for their car, motorbike, motor home, caravan or any other kind of wheeled vehicle. After “shopping around” people soon realise that the way insurance works "on the European continent" is far different to "back home".
This overwhelming experience sadly often leads people to go for the first and foremost convenient offer, which when having to file a claim, often proves to have been the wrong decision when they realise that the motor insurance plan they purchased, fails to meet their expectations, costing them dearly.

Insurers and especially their representatives commonly praise their product to be “the best”, “the most comprehensive” and/or “the cheapest”, relying on the fact that their new customer does not speak the native language. Hence, for a non-German speaking person it is virtually impossible to swiftly verify such proclaimed pledges, purely because the Terms & Conditions are written in a foreign language and juridical papers are very rarely meant to be understandable, not even to local consumers.

Indisputably car insurance is not rocket science, thus every respectable intermediary giving advice to most particularly military personnel, regardless of kind - NATO, Canadian Forces or SHAPE - should be able to explain the particularities within no time and send the appropriate “small-print” before asking their potential new client to take the motor insurance offer to the next level - proposal.
Therefore, should you ever find yourself in a rush or want to sign-up over the phone, latter having its advantages, why not ask about the exclusions for the type of insurance cover you wish to purchase. This method is quick, very effective and bearing the general rule in mind: "if a benefit is not excluded it is covered!", a safe approach.

Important advice:
Should you have already signed up but do not feel comfortable with your choice– no worries! German insurance proposals can be revoked within 2 weeks of receiving the policy documentation and all relevant paperwork.
For more advice, please do no hesitate to contact us.

Does your motor insurance plan offer the following terms / benefits/ services?

  • Legal coverage, for traffic related issues
  • "New for Old" within at least the first 18 months after initial registration in the event of total-loss (can be increased to 60 months!)

WHY NOT ?????

The above-mentioned selling points are standard benefits and services, thus no reason for any BFG, NATO or SHAPE personnel to find themselves without. Furthermore, our expertise, professionalism and consistent urge to improve customer service are secondary but also solid arguments why you can place your trust in ERICON broker.

Car insurance in Germany

All drivers in Germany must be covered by some form of car insurance. You cannot register a vehicle without it. If you are a long-term resident in Germany, you will need to have German car insurance, even if you brought your car to Germany from abroad; foreign car insurance does not suffice.

The price of car insurance in Germany depends on various risk factors, including the driver’s age, experience and location, as well as the value and engine size of the car. If you have only just learnt to drive, for instance, your insurance is likely to be more expensive. It might be worth opting to pay a higher excess in exchange for lower monthly premiums.

Expat-friendly car insurance providers

Not sure where to start? What type of cover would be best for you and can you bring your no claims bonus with you from abroad? Our recommended car insurance providers all give coverage in Germany:

Car insurance providers:

Motorcycle insurance providers:

Types of car insurance in Germany

Your insurance cost is also affected by the type of cover you choose. There are three types of car insurance in Germany:

Third-party coverage (Haftpflicht)

If you wish to register your car, having this type of insurance is the minimum legal requirement. It covers any damage you or your car might inflict on other people, cars or property, including medical bills. It does not cover damage to your own car, if you were responsible.

Partial coverage (Teilkasko)

As well as covering third-party damage, partial coverage also protects you in the case of accidental damage, fire and theft (but not vandalism).

Comprehensive coverage (Vollkasko)

Comprehensive insurance is, as the name suggests, fairly comprehensive, covering third parties, fire, theft and any damages you might make to your own car or yourself. If you buy a car on finance through a dealership, you may be required to take out this type of insurance.

Breakdown insurance (Schutzbriefversicherung)

You might also consider purchasing breakdown insurance, which covers the costs of having your car towed in the case of a breakdown or accident. Some policies also provide a rental car while your car is being fixed.

No claims bonus (Schadenfreiheitsrabatt - SFR)

It may be possible to bring your no claims bonus with you from your home country, in order to reduce the overall cost of your car insurance. It is a good idea to request a letter from your insurance company at home, attesting to your driving record. Your new insurance company may accept this as proof for a no claims bonus.

Taking out German car insurance

The German car insurance market is fairly competitive, so it is worth shopping around to search for the best deals. A price comparison website can help you make a decision. It is usually possible to take out a policy online, by supplying a few personal details, such as your driving licence number and your German bank account.

Getting your eVB number (elektronische Versicherungsbestätigung)

Once you have chosen a provider and taken out a policy, the provider will issue you with an eVB number (elektronische Verischerungsbestätigung), usually via email. Along with your TÜV certificate and vehicle tax form, you need to provide this number to the car registration authority in order to register your car.

Car Insurance in Germany for Military Personnel

If you're stationed in Germany and plan to drive, you'll need car insurance before you can register your vehicle. That's mandatory under German law, whether you ship your car from the United States or purchase the automobile overseas. If you have automobile insurance at home, don't cancel it before heading to Germany if you intend to drive. Speak with your representative about your options.

Overseas Insurance

While your domestic insurance won't cover your vehicle in Germany, your current auto insurer might offer overseas insurance. That's probably the most convenient and efficient way to insure a vehicle while stationed there. Your insurer's German representatives know the local insurance laws and can help you register your vehicle with the appropriate insurance so you can drive as soon as you arrive. Another obvious benefit -- the policy will be written in English, so you won't need the services of a translator.

Other Options

If you don't have automobile insurance domestically, or if your insurer doesn't offer coverage for military personnel stationed in Germany, you can work with German insurers specializing in providing insurance for Americans. You can find such specialty insurers at your German military base, or contact them online. These representatives speak fluent English and can tailor the policy for your particular needs.

Insurance Costs

Expect to pay more for your auto insurance while overseas. The country requires higher minimums for liability insurance than the United States -- up to four times what you pay back home. If you're under 25, you'll pay additional fees for liability coverage. Under German law, payments for disability and medical costs related to automobile accidents are higher than stateside. You'll also pay premiums in euros rather than dollars, so the euro-dollar exchange rate influences the cost.

Request a Discount

You can save some money if you have a long-term good driving record. To protect yourself to some degree from German insurance sticker shock, ask your American insurance company to provide a letter stating that you have not been involved in any accidents. If you've had a license for less than 10 years, such a letter might not influence German insurance rates, but you could receive a discount if you have a clean driving record for a decade or more.

Can visiting friends, family drive my car?

Offering your vehicle to visiting family and friends may sound like a simple solution, but it might not be legal.

Visitors from the U.S. who are not considered military dependents are required to possess an exception to policy form, AE Form 550-175D, to operate a U.S. Army Europe-registered vehicle. This can be obtained through the local military customs field office.

“Individuals who wish to acquire this form will need to bring in their passport, a valid stateside driver’s license, and official German translations of their license or international driver’s licenses issued by the American Automobile Association or National Automobile Club,” said Brian Harris, USAREUR customs border clearance agent. “Copies of the above can be brought in prior to the guest’s arrival to country.”

Once approved, guests can use the exception to policy form to drive a USAREUR registered vehicle in Germany independently. The form must be in the car when they are driving along with the vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and their international driver’s license or an official translation of their stateside license.

The authorization is only valid inside Germany and can be granted for a maximum of 90 days within a six-month period.

“Driving in Germany is tax free for U.S. service members and dependents stationed in Germany, which is why customs authorization is required for guests,” Harris said.

While it is required for guests to acquire the exception to policy form, it is the vehicle owner’s responsibility to ensure their visitors remain compliant.

“Allowing someone to operate their USAREUR-plated vehicle without the proper paperwork could lead the registered owner to receive a traffic ticket and a suspension of driving privileges for up to 180 days,” said Master Sgt. Timothy Bertrand, 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron NCO in charge of installation security.

Visitors who wish to extend the authorization past the maximum granted 90 days require an exception to policy coordinated with the German Federal Finance Ministry, which can be reached at 06221-57-4942.

While the exception to policy form allows guests to operate a USAREUR-plated vehicle, it does not allow them to buy gas at Army and Air Force Exchange Service gas stations or use AAFES fuel ration cards.

Cheap car insurance for the military

Whether you serve in the Army, Navy or Royal Air Force, car insurance can be trickier to arrange than for people in civilian life. However, there are specialist car insurers who understand the unique demands of military life and they can offer more flexible policies to keep you properly cover in the UK and abroad. Here’s our guide for military personnel to find the best car insurance deal at the keenest price.

What’s unique about the job?

By its very nature, serving in the Armed Forces means moving around the UK and the world on a regular basis. This means a standard car insurance policy is often inadequate as it doesn’t allow for multiple addresses. Military personnel may also park their car ‘inside the wire’ when they are on base, so insurance cover needs to include this. There are also periods when you may want to take your car abroad during a posting or lay it up when further afield but still want it insured.

What car insurance will serving military need?

When choosing car insurance as a member of the Armed Forces, it can be difficult when dealing with mainstream insurers. For this reason, some simply choose the cheapest car insurance deal on offer. However, it’s important to find cover that reflects the diverse and fast-changing nature of the job, which will mean a comprehensive policy, compare prices with the likes of Forces Compare. This means you need insurance that provides protection when you are on a military base and doesn’t hike up the premium because you are living in service quarters or a military postcode.

You also need to find a policy that comes with laid-up cover should you need to put your car into storage while on deployment. The best policies will also offer a rebate on your premium when you return from duty that reflects the car has been unused while on laid-up cover.

For those serving in Germany (BFG) or Belgium (SHAPE), there are dedicated policies from UK insurers that cover you for driving in Europe*. Check these deals comes with a full European Green Card, which is an international certificate of insurance the proves you have the minimum insurance required by each country. Not all EU countries now insist on a Green Card, but it’s better to have it when crossing from one country to another.

In the event of making a claim, it’s important to have an insurer who offers an English-speaking claims department that understands the regulations of the country you are serving in.

How military personnel can lower their car insurance premiums

As with all car insurance cover*, honesty is the best policy. Make sure your provider knows if the car will be parked on base or airside at any time. If you don’t, you could risk being uninsured for any damage that happens inside a military facility. The same applies to business use, so be clear whether or not you need this to visit one or more military bases. You will also need Business Use cover if you want to be able to recover expenses through the Joint Personnel Administration system.

If you insure your car with a company based in the country where you’re deployed, such as Germany, make sure the no-claims bonus you build up there is transferrable to a UK policy. Most UK insurers will recognise this and the Armed Forces Commitment means any UK-earned no-claims remains valid for up to three years.

Using a specialist broker for insurers who work with the Armed Forces will find you a better deal than mainstream comparison websites. Check the British Insurers Brokers’ Association for a list of relevant companies.

Anything else?

In June 2016, the Armed Forces Covenant (AFC) commitment was introduced by most of the UK’s car insurers. You should check any insurer has signed up to this agreement – it’s important to check with the company providing the cover and not just a comparison website or broker. The AFC means that serving UK military personnel do not face additional charges for cancelling or suspending insurance cover while abroad on deployment. It also guarantees their no-claims bonus is protected for up to three years, so they will not lose this even when the car is off the road. This commitment is backed by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the British Insurers Brokers’ Association (BIBA).

USAA is an organization founded by military members for military members and their families. USAA was founded in the 1920s, during a time of social and political change. In San Antonio, Texas, 25 army officers met to insure each other’s vehicles and named William Garrison as the first president.

By its t mobile phone number to pay bill nature, serving in the Armed Forces means moving around the UK and the world on a regular basis.

This means you need insurance that provides protection when you are on a military base and doesn’t hike up the premium car insurance in germany for military you are living in service quarters or a military postcode.

In the event of making car insurance in germany for military claim, it’s important to have an insurer who offers an English-speaking claims department that understands the regulations of the country you are serving in.

You should check any insurer has signed walmart site to store to this agreement – it’s important to check with the company providing the cover and not just a comparison website or broker. The AFC means that serving UK military personnel do not face additional charges for cancelling or suspending insurance cover while abroad on deployment. It also guarantees their no-claims bonus is protected for up to m words for kids years, so they will not lose this even when the car is off the road. This commitment is backed by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the British Insurers Brokers’ Association (BIBA).

FAQs

How Does Car Insurance Work for the Military?

Although the basics of car insurance work the same for military members, coverage for active duty servicemen and women does come with some special rules. For example, many states allow service members to maintain vehicle registration and insurance coverage through their home state regardless of where they're stationed. Keep in mind that each insurance company has different requirements when a service member deploys overseas. Finally, some companies only provide coverage to military members, meaning that you may have more options than the average customer when looking for military car insurance.

What Is a Typical Military Discount?

Just like any other type of discount, car insurance discount rates vary from company to company. However, most military car insurance providers offer a discount of 5% to 15% for active duty and retired military members.

What Car Insurance Companies Offer Military Discounts?

Believe it or not, not all car insurance companies offer military discounts. However, if you're looking for companies who do, check with the following companies to save money on your military car insurance:

  • USAA
  • Armed Forces Insurance
  • GEICO
  • Farmers
  • Liberty Mutual.

Do Veterans Get Discounts on Car Insurance?

Although not every company extends a military discount to veterans, many do. Car insurance providers who offer veteran discounts include USAA, AFI, GEICO, Liberty Mutual, and Farmers Insurance. As with any coverage or discount offering, you should always check with a customer service representative or local insurance agent to see if a veteran discount is available.

How Can You Get a Military Discount on Wells fargo hours open on saturday Insurance?

The verification process for car insurance discounts works differently for car insurance in germany for military individual company, but to receive a car insurance in germany for military on military auto insurance, you typically need a state-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID card, or passport), as well as one of the following types of military documentation:

  • D214 Member 4 copy
  • Academy appointment letter or ROTC contract
  • Active duty military orders
  • Discharge certificate
  • Leaving and earning statement
  • NGB22

In addition to standard discounts for active military and retired veterans, some car insurance companies will also allow active duty service members to temporarily cancel their car insurance policy to save money. To do this, you will need proof of deployment (active-duty military orders) and documentation showing that you placed your vehicle in long-term storage for the duration of your deployment.

The Bottom Line

Finding the right car insurance can often feel like an overwhelming task, but a few companies stand out from the pack when it comes to military auto insurance. While you should always compare rates before signing on the dotted line, many military members stand behind the companies that offer exclusive and unique coverage options for active duty service members and veterans.

How We Chose the Best Military Car Insurance

When selecting the best options for military car insurance, we evaluated the ratings of the top 12 car insurance companies from independent rating agencies like J.D. Power and the Better Business Bureau. We also considered unique coverage types and discount offers that are exclusively offered to members of the military, as well as customer reviews from numerous websites.

If you're stationed in Germany and plan to car insurance in germany for military, you'll need car insurance before you can register your vehicle.

You can save some money if you have a country homes for sale near austin tx good driving record.
