2016 Lexus GS F first drive review
For going on a decade now, Lexus has been on a mission to convince enthusiast buyers who might gravitate toward European cars that it, too, can build world-class sports cars and sports sedans. It 2016 lexus gs f horsepower with the 2008 IS F, a would-be BMW M3 competitor that showed promise but just couldn’t really challenge the best performance four-door of the day.
Then came the 2012 LFA. This $375,000 carbon fiber V-10-powered supercar was breathtakingly quick and proved that Lexus, a brand known for stodgy but comfortable sedans and crossovers, truly knew what performance felt like. However, the LFA was so limited (Lexus sold just 500 units) that it didn’t provide the halo the brand really wanted.

Next up was the RC F, which arrived last year. A compact sport coupe aimed at the BMW M4, the RC F actually does some things 2016 lexus gs f horsepower than its somewhat flawed German rival, but even with a V-8 under the hood, the Lexus can’t beat the turbo-six-powered BMW around a racetrack.
Now Lexus is offering its fourth F model, the 2016 GS F. A mid-size four-door sedan, the GS F fires its salvo at rivals like the BMW M5, Mercedes-AMG E63, Cadillac CTS-V, and Audi RS 7. The GS F’s chief engineer, Yukihiko Yaguchi, wants customers to know that this car was bred for the road and the track, and that it produces great sounds, immediate responses, and limitless power. Does the GS F deliver on those promises and does it have the bona fides to take its place among such elite rivals? I travelled to Madrid, Spain to drive the GS F on the Jarama Circuit and find out if the fourth F is the real deal.

The GS F certainly starts with the right clay to make a sport sedan worthy of the road and track. I’ve found the current GS to be more fun to drive than the 2016 lexus gs f horsepower ride and handling benchmark in the class, the BMW 5 Series, which has become somewhat paunchy in its middle age. For the GS F, Lexus, improves upon that already worthy structure with four additional underbody braces.

The suspension and chassis hardware are also more sophisticated. The GS F gets the GS’s double-wishbone front 2016 lexus gs f horsepower and a multi-link rear suspension. Two front arms and two rear links are aluminum to reduce unsprung weight and increase rigidity, the front and rear geometry is tweaked, and spring and bushing rates are stiffer. Sachs shocks and Brembo brakes are used at all four corners, with big 14.96-inch front rotors and 13.58-inch rear rotors.
More importantly, the Clinics of north texas physical therapy F comes standard with the electrically controlled clutch-actuated torque-vectoring rear differential that is optional on the RC F.
Tuned for the road and track
My test drive included a track portion on the 2.4-mile Jarama Circuit, an 11-turn Formula One racetrack with several tight, decreasing radius turns, as well as a street drive discover bank credit card application roads that took us through villages and out onto twisty country roads.
The track drive included not only the GS F but also its little brother the RC F, and each car had a pro driver in the passenger seat to coach us through the Jarama Circuit and run through the various drive modes. The GS F comes standard with a Drive Mode Selector with Normal, Eco, Sport S, and Sport S+ modes, all of which adjust the dampers, throttle response, transmission shift points, stability control limits, and steering weight. The torque-vectoring differential also has Normal, Slalom, and Track settings.

While the RC F is a bit portly for its size, the GS F weighs only about 75 pounds more, making it light for the class. At 4034 pounds, it weighs 356 pounds less than the M5 and 111 less than the lightweight CTS-V. That helps the GS F drive smaller than its considerable size, though the drive modes and the settings for the torque-vectoring convert 0.5 mm to m really change its dynamic personality.

Leave the Drive Mode Selector in Normal mode and the GS F’s natural character comes out. Though a bit light, the steering is delightfully quick and the car turns in crisply. Push it hard into a corner, though, and the sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires give up grip and allow it to plow forward rather than rotate. The Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system (VDIM) also kicks in all too willingly, engaging the traction control and even cutting the power as the car scrambles for traction through the Jarama Circuit’s many tight turns.
Switch over to the Sport S or Sport S+ modes and put the differential in Slalom or Track and the GS F is suddenly very willing to rotate, and this is where it feels much smaller than its size. Basically, the GS F’s natural understeer is cured by the active torque-vectoring rear diff.

In Sport S+ mode the VDIM is also less intrusive than it is in the RC F, making the GS F the more fun car to drive with at least some of the safety nets in place. Lexus didn’t let us use the “Expert” mode, which engages only minimal stability control, in either car, but the RC F would benefit from the GS F’s VDIM childhood obesity in america essay on the road, the GS F first citizens credit union mattapoisett another ill of its little brother. The longer wheelbase helps iron out some of the ride harshness of the RC F and makes the GS F a fairly comfortable cruiser. The quick, direct steering and strong brakes are just as satisfying on the street as they are on the track, making this a fun car to drive in any situation.
Powerful but limited
The story under the hood is a good one, but not a great one. The GS F gets the same 5.0-liter V-8 as the RC F and it makes the same 467-horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque. It’s an advanced engine, but it doesn’t offer the ridiculous power of the force-fed engines of those aforementioned rivals. This V-8 features both direct and port injection and runs on both the Otto and Atkinson cycles. These traits allow it to deliver decent fuel economy as well as willing power. It is rated at 16 mpg city, 24 highway, and 19 overall.
2016 Lexus GS F
The 5.0-liter winds willingly up to 7300 rpm, emitting the throaty howl of a naturally aspirated V-8 along the way. Lexus even pipes in more sound through a pair of speakers, one up front and one in the rear. The simulated sound comes through the front speaker in Sport S mode and through both in Sport S+. 2016 lexus gs f horsepower the V-8’s intoxicating growl, the simulated sound is unnecessary.
The V-8 offers plenty of power, and Lexus’ estimate of a 4.5-second 0 to 60 mph time seems realistic. Throttle response is, indeed, immediate, but Lexus’ claim of unlimited power is an overstatement, especially in the face of competitors with as many as 640 horsepower. If Lexus really wants the GS F to compete against the some of the world’s best sport sedans, it’s going to have to turbocharge or supercharge this engine.
The eight-speed automatic transmission is a similar tale. It shifts smoothly and responsively, though not as crisply and quickly as some of the better dual-clutch transmissions on the market, including the one from BMW. I would also like to see a manual transmission, though that’s likely a pipedream. Again, if Lexus really wants to compete, a dual-clutch gearbox would produce faster shift times and quicker lap times.
The GS F can be thought of as a larger, more practical version of the RC F. In place of a tight rear seat limited by a compact car’s coupe roofline, this midsize sedan has a three-passenger rear seat that will accommodate six footers.
Over and above the standard GS, the F gets aluminum pedals; perforated leather on the seats and steering wheel; available carbon fiber trim; and alcantara on the meter hood, instrument panel, door trim, center console, and Remote Touch palm rest. At also features high-back front sport seats that are also exceptionally comfortable and supportive.

Lexus’ Remote Touch system is standard. It uses a center console-mounted joystick to enter controls on the massive 12.3-inch dashboard screen. Haptic feedback makes “buttons” on the screen provide resistance through the joystick. For 2016, Lexus adds a thumb-activated “Enter” button that helps make the system a bit easier to use. However, this controller still requires drivers to develop a bit of manual dexterity, and that can make it frustrating.
So, does the GS F have what it takes to challenge such heady rivals? From a ride and handling standpoint, yes. The GS F truly is right-now responsive and it makes great sounds. The price is also fairly competitive. Pricing starts at $85,380, which is in line with the Cadillac CTS-V, about $10,000 less than the M5, $17,000 less than the Mercedes-AMG E63 S, and $24,000 less than the RS 7. However, the GS F isn’t nearly as a powerful as any of those rivals.
The fourth F in the Lexus portfolio does the brand proud, but it has some room to grow on the horsepower front if its going to be a true competitor for some of the finest sport sedans on the market.
First drive: 2016 Lexus GS F [Review]
When Lexus overhauled the IS lineup, the F model was dropped. Some saw this as a sign that Lexus was abandoning its push for a genuine performance brand, choosing instead to simply cash in on its very profitable F-Sport lineup. But with the announcement of its new coupe model, the RC, Lexus did right by the F-brand faithful, announcing that the 5.0L V8 would return for 2015.
Rumors of a larger F model had circulated for years. As the economy recovered, Lexus remained publicly open to the idea of such a model, teasing its development from time to time but taking quite a while to fully commit. It wasn't until the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit that it became official: The GS F was on its way.
Better lateA ~400hp, naturally aspirated V8 made a compelling case for itself as a high-output engine in a mid-size luxury car five or six years ago, but it's pretty clear that the segment has since moved on. A quick glance at the competition will cement that notion. Cadillac CTS-V: 640hp. BMW M5: 560hp (more, if you get the comp package). Mercedes-AMG E63 S: 577 horsepower. Audi RS6/7: 560hp. This is a segment utterly dominated by forced induction.
The package To be fair, the 5.0L Lexus V8 has evolved too. It now makes 467 horsepower and 389 lb-ft of torque. And the GS F is not the bank-vault-on-wheels that many competitors tend to be, weighing in at a microsoft xbox 360 account login 4,034lbs. Lightweight or not, though, the power deficit is difficult to ignore.
The rest of the package is promising, however. The GS F comes standard with a mechanical torque-vectoring differential. While it is electronically controlled, it's not a brake-based system. The same diff is offered as an upgrade to the standard Torsen rear end on RC F models, if that's any clue to its capability.
The same eight-speed automatic transmission that debuted in the IS F is found here too. It's a traditional torque-converter automatic at heart, but employs very aggressive lock-up tuning to make it feel (and perform) a lot like a sequential manual unit, in some cases even delivering quicker shifts than some of the dual-clutch transmissions on the market.
The chassis is fairly conventional for the midsize luxury segment. Up front is a double-wishbone suspension; out back you'll find a multi-link setup. The GS F employs Brembo brakes all around, with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston units money network bank of america register the rear.
On the trackLexus invited us to the Palm Desert for the express purpose of putting the GS F through its paces. Our handlers also scrounged up a couple of RC Fs so that we could compare them back-to-back and get a feel for the progression of the Lexus F line.
Chuckwalla Valley Raceway is a relatively flat and low-speed course just north of I-10. The nearest landmark is "Desert Center," which, so far as we could tell, is not so much a town as it is a navigational aid.
Lacking elevation change to work with, the course designers opted to keep things tight and technical so as to prevent weekend warriors from developing acute highway hypnosis. In the configuration we utilized, it's 17 turns and 2.68 miles, with the longest straight measuring just a hair 2016 lexus gs f horsepower a quarter mile.
A tight course with a lot of turns is hard on a car's braking system, so it should come as no surprise that we were paying a great deal of attention to the GS F's Brembos. We're pleased to say that they delivered consistent lap-after-lap stopping power, giving us the confidence to push the rest of the car as the session went on.
The GS F remained graceful and composed. The suspension was clearly engineered to strike a balance between performance and comfort. The result is a car that responds fairly crisply to inputs, but incorporates enough suspension travel to remain incredibly predictable. Translation? Yes, there's body roll, but not too much of it, and what is there makes the GS F very communicative and forgiving.
After a few stints in the GS F, we switched over to the RC F so that we could get a feel for what the two cars do differently. Not only did this provide a nice comparison opportunity, but more importantly, it gave us a context for the performance and handling characteristics of the new GS F. Rather than simply testing it in a vacuum, we had a reference point.
Both the GS F and RC F were equipped with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, so the amount of grip on offer by the two was very similar. The RC F, being smaller and more firmly sprung, was twitchier near the limit, offering less warning before ultimately breaking traction. It also had a much firmer, less communicative brake pedal. It would still haul down from speed just as effectively as the GS F, but lacked the latter's linear, confidence-inspiring feel.
Ultimately, the GS F felt a little less focused than the RC F, but in a way that may be a plus. The RC F's compromises may afford it slightly better overall performance, but depending on the buyer, that may not necessarily be a good thing.
Despite its excellent showing, we felt the GS F would be far more at home on a faster course. At the end of the session, we concluded that the RC F would be the better tool for setting the quickest lap time, but the GS F would encourage us to push our own personal limits more freely, affording a safer and potentially more productive learning experience.
On the roadWith our track session in the bag, Lexus sent us on our way in the same cars to get a feel for their on-road performance. We were fortunate enough to score a GS F for the 70-mile haul back to the hotel. Here, the larger sedan's comfort and convenience features made us feel entirely justified in our choice of road car.
We found the compliance that made the GS F so predictable and forgiving on the track also made it a comfortable and confidence-inspiring cruiser. In addition, even with all of the sport accouterments dialed back to their "normal" driving settings, the engine and transmission were still plenty responsive enough to deliver quick, authoritative highway passes or inner city maneuvers.
Our quibbles were few and minor. For one, the sound enhancement system is silly. This is a frequent complaint when it comes to cars with artificial engine/exhaust sound systems, so we won't dwell on it. Suffice it to say that the GS F employs the audio system to correct/amplify both engine and exhaust noise, and it seems a strange and entirely arbitrary thing to incorporate.
And despite the GS F's robust performance credentials and its admirable showing at Chuckwalla, it's really more at home on the street than on the track. It's a few rungs above Audi's S-cars in terms of track-ready performance, but in 2016 lexus gs f horsepower couple of key ways they have a lot in common. They exist in that compromise zone between the big-engine luxury cruisers and the all-out performance machines.
Leftlane's bottom lineThe 2016 Lexus GS F lacks the outright speed and harder edge of some of the segment's hotter offerings, but makes up for its shortcomings with nimble handling and approachable limits. Whether the two back seats and more forgiving ride are worth a $20,000 premium over the RC F coupe is entirely up to the buyer.
2016 Lexus GS F, base price: $84,440.
First impressions are meaningful. Mine was that the Lexus GS F looks as if it wants to inhale all the world's air, spritz it with gas, and turn it into glorious noise.
Say what you will about the gaping maw of the Lexus F cars. This GS has presence. The giant biting hourglass was first thing I saw when I walked into the studio, and the last thing I saw when I walked out. You don't want to turn your back on it, and that's the idea.
Lexus snuck us into a photo studio in California for a preview of the GS F. We spent a quiet morning staring down the unholy thing, and came back with a ton regions bank hours today near me photos and a few specs ahead of its debut at the Detroit Auto Show.
Pertinent facts: It has a V8 good for 467-hp at a breathy 7,100 rpm. It is, thankfully, rear-wheel-drive. It has that fancy multi-mode torque vectoring differential. It has the same 8-speed Aisin torque-converter transmission. It is, for all intents and purposes, the best bits of the RC F draped all over a strengthened GS sedan chassis. And by the numbers, that'll work out just fine. Because the GS F weighs in at 4,034 pounds, there's only a 76 lb penalty for those extra doors.
That little bit of extra weight will test monster Brembo six-piston monoblocks up front, another RC F legacy. If the sharing continues, expect double-wishbone suspension up front and multilink in the rear. Other big upgrades include the interior, which becomes an environment worthy of basking in buttery V8 noise.
The Lexus guys tell us the front and rear fenders and the carbon spoiler of the GS F are unique to the car, and designed for air management, and that an underbody tray was deemed unnecessary for their performance targets. Basically, A-pillar forward, the GS F is a new car. Meaner. Better.
Sport sedans, especially mid-sized ones like the GS F, sometimes reek of confusion and compromise. Lexus has been as guilty of this stink as anyone else in the past, but they might just pass the test with the GS-F. We already know and enjoy the 5.0-liter V8. There's something weirdly likable and efficient about those 19" wheels. There's so much that's familiar here, as if every nice thing Lexus had ever made was analyzed, fixed precisely with few flourishes, and then assembled together.
Does it all add up? No idea. And we won't know until we get it on the road. That big mouth though. If I was building sports sedans I wouldn't turn my back on it either.

It runs both in the Atkinson cycle for improved fuel efficiency at cruising speeds, and in the Otto cycle for better performance when accelerating. 2016 Lexus GS F review: Lexus' latest high-performance sedan is a star on and off the track
After a few more sessions out, my admiration only increases for the GS F's excellent handling, responsive and weighty steering, playful nature and fade-resistant Brembo stoppers. This is a Lexus that's legitimately fun to wheel around a race track, and built to handle the grueling exercise. It doesn't feel over-engineered and void of personality, which is something I wouldn't have expected from Lexus, given its history.
Toyota's luxury division initially rose to prominence with its reputation of producing well-built, smooth and coffin-quiet vehicles. The knock against them were that they lacked drive character, soul and visual flare. Things have changed, though, with the effort put into becoming a serious performance threat to its German and American competition now paying off.
The GS F is the second sedan in the Lexus performance lineup to receive the full F makeover, following the first-generation IS F that includes bigger power, extensive chassis revisions, suspension upgrades and more aggressive looks. With it, Lexus aims to give the likes of the BMW M5, Mercedes-AMG E63 and Cadillac CTS-V a run for their money.
Flashbacks on track
The idea of Lexus producing performance vehicles on par with BMW and Mercedes-Benz is something that I'm who was the wicked witch of the west getting used to, but the GS F unearths memories from five years ago, when I flogged the LFA supercar around this very same 2.1-mile west Michigan circuit. Prior to piloting that V10 animal, I didn't think Lexus could produce a sporty driver, period. Now in the GS F, I see some of that LFA magic.
This GS F becomes wildly entertaining on track with Drive Mode Select in Sport S Plus, unlocking all of the V8's fury, tightening steering and activating the stability control's Expert mode, which kills traction control and gives you enough rope to pitch through corners sideways. If you get really out of shape, however, the computer still cuts in to save your keister.
Most impressive is how the GS F behaves when you stop screwing around and put down clean laps. Sharp turn-in gets the nose quickly darting in whatever direction you tell it, while it hangs on through corners with superhero-like composure. It handles GingerMan's fast transitions beautifully, and exhibits only a smidge of understeer through the really tight stuff. It feels solid and eager, thanks to upgrades like additional underbody braces, bigger and stickier Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, torque vectoring rear differential and reworked suspension.
The fixed suspension uses Sachs mono-tube shock absorbers with steel springs, which some may skewer as a cheaper alternative to adaptive suspensions found on the M5, Audi RS 7 and CTS-V. True, the GS F doesn't have as wide of a damping range, but Lexus' tune works well for the track and street.
Lexus makes the steering communicative, tricky to do with an electric system. And the torque vectoring diff, which overdrives the outside wheel in a turn, helps in getting the power back on in corners.
Speaking of power, the five-liter V8 punches in at 467 horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers may sound weak compared to the force-induced nuclear reactors in some of its rivals. Today, the M5 has 560 horsepower, the RS 7 Performance packs 605 ponies and the CTS-V comes with a staggering 640 horses.
If you're horsepower drunk and value bench racing with your buddies yammering about specs, then the Lexus isn't going to be for you. However, the GS F's engine does have its benefits. Being naturally-aspirated, is aldis open today V8 features a linear powerband as well as lively throttle response, and it belts out magnificent sounds at full bore.
Out on track, I never thought the GS F too slow or needed more thrust. It shoots out of corners and down straights in rapid fashion, which can also be attributed to the car's lighter 4,034-pound curb weight, hundreds 2016 lexus gs f horsepower than most of the competitive set. Lexus claims a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds, which is quick, but off the Bimmer's 4.1-second time, and the 3.7-second claims for the Audi and Caddy.
High marks go to the F's eight-speed automatic gearbox. Exceptional manual shift response for up and down gear changes matches many dual-clutch units out today, but the torque converter delivers better daily driving performance when you don't find yourself at a road course. For the hardcore enthusiasts, I'm sorry to say that Lexus continues to disappoint by not offering a manual.
Taking it to the streets
Away from the track, the Lexus rides a touch firm over bumps, but works fine for regular commuting. With the Drive Mode selector in Normal, the V8 putters smoothly around town at low rpm while returning 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA. The transmission performs imperceptible bankers life the woodlands changes, and steering feel lightens for a more relaxed experience.
The spacious cabin lined with leather, Alcantara and carbon fiber stays quiet from bothersome road and wind noises. Highlighting the interior, the sport seats not only look cool, but hold you in place with good support, and prove comfortable for a drive across a state.
When the V8 isn't filling the cabin with music, there's a great 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system for regular tunes. In addition, the infotainment system features a 12.3-inch center screen, navigation, Bluetooth and the Lexus Enform App Suite that uses a smartphone connection to stream music, make dinner reservations and purchase movie tickets. I'm coming to terms with the Remote Touch controller, too, but it's still more distracting to use than Audi's MMI or Benz's Comand system while driving.
People who prefer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto as their infotainment interface of choice remain out of luck. The company says both remain in development, but decline to give a time frame on when they'll arrive.
It wouldn't be a luxury car without some safety tech, so the GS F comes standard with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and radar cruise control. The last one makes my 180-mile drive back from western Michigan to Detroit a breeze, and did an admirable job keeping with the flow of traffic.
Finally, the GS F looks the part with its spindle grille undercut by a carbon-fiber lip. Bigger front dams direct air to oil and transmission fluid coolers, as well as front brakes and then exit out the wider front fenders' rear openings. Different rocker panels, a carbon spoiler and stacked exhaust outlets set this car off from the mundane GS model.
Overpowered, but still appealing
How many customers will the GS F draw away from the more muscular competition? Not an overwhelming number, but those who put this Lexus in their garage will be treated wells fargo bank login private a car that makes a statement with balanced performance capabilities, and not brute force. The blueprint Lexus uses for the GS F is similar to the one BMW used for its older M5s, producing a car with adequate power and snappy handling that you drive, instead of merely hanging on for dear life.
There is a slight value argument going for Lexus with its $84,440 price tag, which undercuts the $94,100 M5 and $110,700 2016 lexus gs f horsepower 7. The elephant in the room is the CTS-V with its $84,995 base price (including a 38 c equal to f gas guzzler tax) that's right in the F's ballpark.
Even with spec sheet deficiencies, if I was shopping this segment, there's a good chance the underpowered Lexus would be the car I take home.
