Walmart Expands Its Grocery Delivery Service Providers

Walmart Teams up with Point Pickup, Skipcart, AxleHire and Roadie to expand Grocery Delivery

BENTONVILLE, Ark.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Walmart today announced the addition of four delivery companies to its team to help expand the retailer’s popular Online Grocery Delivery option. Point Pickup, Skipcart, AxleHire and Roadie will help power Walmart’s Online Grocery Delivery in metro areas across four states with further expansion planned in the coming weeks. Today, Walmart Grocery Delivery is available in more than 800 stores with another 800 being adding this year.

“Customers love our Grocery Delivery service. As they are busy managing jobs, soccer practice, dance lessons and social schedules we are on a mission to do more than keep a little extra money in their pockets,” said Tom Ward, senior vice president of Digital Operations, Walmart U.S. “With the help of these new delivery partners, we’re making grocery shopping even easier by bringing the everyday low prices of Walmart right to the front door of customers.”

With the help of Walmart’s personal shoppers and the delivery networks of these four companies, along with other key partners, thousands of customers will be able to shop for and have fresh groceries delivered to their doorsteps. Personal shoppers must complete a three-week training program learning how to select the freshest produce and the best cuts of meat for Online Grocery customers.

Walmart Grocery Delivery brings customers the convenience of shopping when and where they want for quality, fresh produce, meat, seafood and bakery items, along with pantry staples, consumables and seasonal general merchandise. To use delivery, customers place their orders online at Walmart.com/grocery or on the existing Walmart Grocery App, switch to the Delivery tab, and select a delivery window at checkout. After orders have been picked by Walmart’s personal shoppers, a member of the delivery partner’s team retrieves the order from a Walmart store and delivers it right to the customer during their specified delivery window.

Groceries can be delivered to customers as soon as the same day. Walmart’s Online Grocery Delivery carries a simple fee structure and a $30 minimum order – no subscription, no price markups. Customers can get their first order delivered for free with promo code FRESHCAR with a $50 minimum order. Walmart currently offers Grocery Delivery in more than 100 metro areas. The retailer will make grocery deliveries to more than 300 metro areas by the end of this year.

The retailer also offers an Online Grocery Pickup service that allows customers to order their groceries online and pick them up in stores without ever getting out of their cars. The service, which has become a customer favorite and touted as a “Grocery Hero” for moms on the go and time-strapped families, is now available in 2,100 stores with 1,000 more to be added this year.

Walmart said Wednesday it plans to expand its use of high-tech systems that quickly pick and pack online grocery orders as it anticipates shoppers' demand for pickup and delivery will outlast the pandemic.

Dozens of Walmart's stores will become fulfillment centers, with a portion of those stores turned into small, automated warehouses, the company said. To accomplish this, Walmart will use a store's existing footprint or add to it.

Walmart began testing one system called Alphabot at its Salem, New Hampshire store in 2019, and it immediately saw results. The system allowed the retailer to pick orders within minutes and have them ready for a customer within an hour of placing the order.

As Walmart automates more stores, it will try different configurations and work with several technology providers, including Alert Innovation, Dematic and Fabric. Some stores will have a pickup area where customers and delivery drivers can drive up, scan a code and grab their order, said Tom Ward, senior vice president of customer product at Walmart U.S.

Walmart declined to say how many stores will receive the technology or say how much it will spend on the upgrades. But the investment is a key part of how the nation's largest grocer hopes to fend off rivals such as Amazon, Kroger and Ahold Delhaize-owned FreshDirect that are competing for customers on same-day availability, speed and price.

For customers, Walmart's expansion of these high-tech systems could ultimately mean they can more easily snag a same-day delivery or pickup slot and have those groceries ready faster.

Automated fulfillment

Instead of relying on store employees to retrieve every can of soup or other item a customer wants, the local fulfillment centers will combine machinery and manpower. When an order comes in, robots will retrieve items from chilled groceries to electronics and bring them to an employee at a picking station to help assemble. At the same time, personal shoppers will handpick any fragile or unwieldly items on the sales floor, such as fresh seafood, meats and produce or bulkier items like a large-screen TV or a pack of paper towels.

Walmart will expand use of a high-tech system that helps it fulfill online grocery orders. In a small warehouse in some stores, automated bots will retrieve popular items while personal shoppers grab finicky ones like produce from the sales floor.

During the pandemic, Walmart and other retailers have seen demand for online grocery delivery spike. Walmart's growth in pickup and delivery peaked at 300% and its new customers for the services quadrupled in the early days of the health crisis. To respond, Walmart boosted slot capacity by 40%.

A Walmart+ perk

Even if customers feel comfortable returning to stores, they may seek out online delivery for convenience. Walmart has made unlimited grocery deliveries a central perk of Walmart+, its new membership program — which could drive a greater volume of orders and raise customers' expectations.

"As we move ahead, we don't see the use of these services changing in the future," Ward said. "We expect that we'll continue to serve more and more customers who have come to rely on pickup and delivery as an important part of their lives."

Online grocery orders have pressured grocers' profits in the notoriously low-margin business. It has forced them to pick, pack and ship orders that customers typically retrieve and transport themselves.

Ward said the fulfillment centers are another way to use its more than 4,700 stores, which are located close to customers' homes, as a competitive asset.

It has already broken ground on compact fulfillment centers in different parts of the country, including in the Dallas area and its hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas, he said. Each not only serves its own store, but also fulfills orders picked up at other nearby stores.

Walmart Just Suspended Delivery and Pickup in This Area

Walmart closed dozens of stores in Louisiana and surrounding areas in the wake of deadly Hurricane Ida, which made landfall in the U.S. on Aug. 29. In Lousiana alone, power outages continue to impact tens of thousands of homes and businesses. In a neighboring state, Walmart customers still can't place a mobile pickup or delivery order more than two weeks later.

One day before the hurricane hit, mobile orders were suspended at impacted stores in Mississippi's six southern counties. Ever since Aug. 28, pickup areas have "been a ghost town at several stores in the area," according to WLOX, a local TV news station in Biloxi.

Eat This, Not That! subsequently reached out to Walmart for more information about the suspensions in service. Of 10 locations in the southern part of the state, only three stores are currently allowing customers to access mobile delivery, the company said. Mobile pickup and delivery services at the impacted stores are scheduled to resume on Sept. 18.

Inside the impacted Walmart stores, several shelves are empty due to shortages of certain supplies, WLOX reports. The inability to order groceries online for pickup or delivery has further left some shoppers in a bind as they continue to clean up after the storm and grapple with ways to stay safe amid an ongoing pandemic.

"It's convenient not bringing my kid into the store, especially with COVID and all the germs and everything," Walmart shopper Samantha Brown told WLOX. "So, it's a little more inconvenient to go in and a little more time-consuming."

Walmart previously set up an interactive map to help Americans find open stores where they could access supplies.

As people are practicing social distancing amid the COVID-19 outbreak, many are looking into getting essential items like groceries via delivery and pick-up services. Even if you're a die-hard Walmart fan, however, you may not be aware that the store has its own system for ordering pickup.

To help those who may be new to the game, we rounded up everything you need to know before you place your first Walmart order via the grocery app.

How do I place an order for Walmart pick-up or delivery?

Simply go to their Grocery site or download the grocery app from your phone's app store. There you'll be prompted to create an account, as well as select a delivery address or pick-up location and a time slot. They recommend you do this before starting an order since spots fill up so quickly. Pickup and delivery availability can vary by location, so this will also let you know if either is available in your area.

Also, the first time you place an order, they'll ask if you want some tips for ordering, which we highly recommend. You can also check them out here. Some app-specific bonuses include marking favorite items for easy re-ordering, setting Siri shortcuts, and tracking your order.

What is the difference between pickup and delivery?

Depending on availability and your location, you can choose between pick-up and delivery for that day or the following day, which can make spots kind of tough to snag. Be sure to check back often, especially first thing in the morning.

If you choose pickup, it's free, but you'll have to show up at a scheduled time at your selected Walmart location. Employees will load your trunk with your groceries and that's it!

If you choose delivery, you'll incur a charge of around $8. You can also sign up for Delivery Unlimited, which is $12.95 a month or $98 a year. If you choose this option, you'll definitely want the Walmart app because you'll be notified when your driver leaves and you can track their progress through the app, too. If you're cool with it, they can simply leave your groceries at your door step as a form of contactless delivery.

How do I start shopping?

Once you create an account and get a time slot, you can start searching different Walmart departments and add items to your cart by clicking the "add to cart" button. Oh, and depending on what you want, make sure you either enable or disable substitutions for the order in case your store is out of something.

You'll have to hit a $30 minimum and since availability can be scare, it's better to do orders in larger batches rather than smaller, frequent ones. It's also worth noting that you cannot use coupon codes other than Walmart's refer-a-friend promotion (more on that below).

Once you're done shopping and you've hit your minimum, double check that you have everything you need, that your delivery or pickup location and time are correct, and then check out.

Are there any promotions I can use?

Walmart has a referral program that can save you and your friends money on grocery orders. Go to this site to receive your own personal referral link. Send the link to your friends and once they complete their first order, you’ll receive a $10 promo code for your next order.

Another way to save if you shop at Walmart often is through a store-affiliated credit card, which give you 5 percent back.

Walmart is rolling out a pilot program that will allow food stamp recipients to order groceries online and pick them up at stores.

The nation's largest retailer is currently offering online ordering for food stamp and other EBT users at one store in the Houston market and four more in Boise, Idaho. More markets will be added throughout 2017, Walmart said in a statement.

"You've told us you love Online Grocery Pickup - it's putting you in charge of your schedule and how you shop. We are so excited that it's saving you time and money," Walmart said. "We think this is a service that should be available to everyone."

Walmart's program will allow EBT users to order online and then pay when they pick up their groceries. Currently, SNAP regulations require customers using EBT to pay for their purchases at the "actual time and place" of a sale. Customers using EBT for online ordering will see no other changes in Walmart's pick-up and pay program: they will order online, arrive at the designated pick-up spots at the store and have their groceries delivered to their car where their payment will be processed.

EBT card users include recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps, and Women, Infants, and Children Nutrition Program.

In January, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the SNAP program, launched a two-year pilot program testing online ordering and payments. Only food stamp eligible items will be allowed via the online program.

About 44 million people in the U.S. receive food stamps, according to the USDA.

If you haven’t yet tried Walmart’s online grocery ordering system in Utah, let me give you a run down of how it works. I’ll go over the The pros and cons and you can get a feel of if the service is for you. For me, its been a lifesaver, it might be for you too.

How does it work

First of all you head on over to the Walmart Grocery site and signup. Once you’ve created your account you pick the store you want to collect your order from. most stores in Utah now offer pickup options, plus Walmart operates several special pickup only locations as well. Once you’ve logged in, you can review the options for where you drive to pickup your order.

At this time you can either reserve your pickup window (offered in one hour blocks, seven days a week) or just get started on the order. If you do reserve a pickup time now, they’ll happily hold that for you, for two hours in total. Plenty of time to get shopping and head to checkout. Speaking of which, you can do that on your phone or tablet in an app, or on a computer browser. You can also start on one and finish on another, its completely seamless.

If you don’t reserve a slot you can keep your basket in a pending state for as long as you want. I find myself always keeping an order open, and as I run out of items during the week, just pop them onto the Walmart app there and then. 30 seconds and done, I don’t forget that I’ve run out of salt the next time I go shopping!

I’ve found product availability can vary depending on the store you choose and how busy it is. Generally I always find what I need, and given Walmart’s expansive inventory, there’s always an alternative. As you make more and more orders, the system starts to build up a favorites list of your most ordered items, making re-order of standard essentials a cinch.

One quirk I’ve found is that sometimes, the smallest change to a product can make it seem like its permanently out of stock. If something on your favorites 1st advantage federal credit union sign in always seems out of stock, search the online store again. It’s likely the store still has the product, it just changed form something like 5 to 5.5 ounces, so is in effect a different product now.

For items by the pound like deli meat and vegetables, the ordering system lets you ratchet up in 0.25 pound increments. I’ve always walmart order groceries online the weights and measurements fairly accurate when I collect too. Speaking of vegetables, I’ve ordered from two stores in SLC and both have supplied good produce as good as any outlet in town. Nothing too old, nothing close to going off. That best accounting software for small business, I find avocados are always super unripe; so for items you truly need to feel in your hands, an in store trip might be better.

What about frozen and refrigerated items, delicate items

I believe items are temperature controlled until you pick them up. Certainly in the years of using this service, I’ve never had one single complaint. Frozen goods are picked up still frozen, and refrigerated items. Likewise, delicate items such as eggs have always been supplied without issue.

What if my item isn’t in stock

Once you’ve completed your order, hit the check out button and you can specify what you want to happen if the item isn’t in stock. You can ask for a refund or opt for the Walmart employee to make their best choice at a suitable alternative. This can be a tricky judgement call; but if you don’t like a substitution at pickup, you can always turn it down in person. When you arrive to pickup your order, the team will always run down any changes with you in person.

I tend to let the guys choose what my substitution will be and more often than not you actually get a bigger or better product. Let’s say your specific 12oz coffee is out of stock, but they have a 16oz in stock, they’ll fill your order with the bigger product at no extra cost. This has happened to me time and time again, it’s always cool to feel like you’ve beaten the big guy a little too!

Only very rarely have I had bizarre substitutions, one time I got lemons for limes. Hmm, not sure what was going through the picker’s mind that day. Sometimes it’s worthy of a small giggle, but the staff are endlessly helpful, and again, you can always turn down a substation for a refund.

What are the prices like

First up, the service is completely free. The Walmart team at your local store will pick the groceries for you and have them waiting during your pickup window. They’ll load your car for you, run down any item changes and they don’t accept tips. It’s completely free.

The prices on products are exactly the same as in store. Yep you read that right, not only is the pickup service free, but you don’t pay a penny extra on product’s ordered online for pickup. Honestly it kinda baffles me why anyone would willingly trudge around a Walmart when this convenience is art most fingertips.

Then we get to Savings Catcher – Walmart’s program of refunding you the difference – if a competitor has a product cheaper. This doesn’t happen automatically so you do have to be meticulous. Each time you make payment you do need to submit your receipt on the Walmart.com site. I just wait for my email confirmation of pickup to arrive, and use that as my reminder to go and file my Savings Catcher receipt on their site. On a typical order of $100-$125 I usually find I get $1-$2 is it safe to give someone your bank account number. That doesn’t seem like much I know, but over the course of a year (remember you have to be diligent) it doesn’t hurt getting the odd $50 gift card to use on Walmart.com. Annoyingly you can’t use these gift cards on groceries at this time, just general product on the Walmart online store.

Walmart Savings Catcher cash back - real examples from my most recent orders

What is pickup like

On the day of your order all you need to do is call the provided number 15 minutes before you arrive at the store; so they can prep your order for loading into your car. And if you forget, its all good, I’ve turned up unannounced before and the team has been courteous and understanding in getting my order loaded up. If you use more hyvee mankato mn weekly ad one store, it’s always good to double check what store you’re headed to as well. Yep, done that before.

Walmart - free gift bag

Is Walmart online ordering and walmart order groceries online for me?

If you like to inspect each apple, banter with the deli guy, check out what’s new on each shelf – then maybe not. Also, I am not aware of any way to use coupons in the app or website, so if you’re a coupon clipper extraordinaire this might not be for you either.

If you’re just stocking up on essentials and hate the wasted time and energy that comes with grocery shopping – then yes, this is for you. You cut out the travel time, the whole time of shopping, checking our and competing with other shoppers. If it’s super hot or cold out, you can order from the comfort of your sofa. I personally use the service to order bulk and everyday items, cleaning products, tinned goods, pantry items; stuff I know that Walmart will easily be the cheapest for. And items that I honestly don’t care if they switch out for another brand. I am honestly not too bothered if

Another nice bonus, every so often you’ll get handed a small gift bag of random products. Nothing crazy or expensive, but who doesn’t love free stuff. It’s usually all very random and new products that a company wants to get in peoples hands to try.

$10 off your first order

If you want to test out the service use the following link: http://r.wmt.co/g-Tw1. This will give you $10 of your first order, plus give me $10 too. Hey thanks in advance stranger! 🙂

Instead of relying on store employees to retrieve every can of soup or other item a customer wants, the local fulfillment centers will combine machinery and manpower. When an order comes in, robots will retrieve items from chilled groceries to electronics and bring them to an employee at a picking station to help assemble.
