What credit card has the best cash back -

You can get more out of your everyday purchases with the right cash-back credit card. Some cash-back credit cards offer flat-rate perks, like 1% to 2% cash back on all purchases, while others reward you at higher rates, between 2% and 6%, when you spend money on groceries, at gas stations or even with certain retailers.

When you earn cash back, your rewards usually show up as a statement credit that can be used to pay your bill or be deposited into your bank account. Every time you use your credit card on eligible purchases, you'll earn real dollars and cents back. It's that simple. Check out our picks of the best cash-back credit cards below. We update this list continuously to make sure you stay informed of the best opportunities available.

Our Take

Most cards that offer category selection for maximized cash rewards limit these selections to a single quarter. But the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card* allows you to select "online shopping" as an indefinite rewards category where you can earn 3% cash back rewards. Note that you must manually choose this category via online banking or the mobile banking app, as the default category is "gas."

You can also earn 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs (earn 3% and 2% cash back on up to $2,500 in combined choice category/grocery store/wholesale club purchases each quarter, then 1%), and 1% cash back on all other purchases. The welcome bonus doesn't hurt, either.

Our Take

While there are a few contenders for the best grocery credit card, the Chase Freedom Unlimited offers a grocery deal that's hard to beat. Not only does it offer one of the highest cash-back rates for grocery store purchases at 5% (not including Target or Walmart purchases), but it has one of the highest spending caps for this category as well, at $12,000 on these purchases for the first year. So you can earn up to $600 cash back in the first year, just on groceries -- that's without mentioning the other cash back rewards categories this card offers.

You can even earn more cash-back rewards when you make purchases on entertainment (4%), popular streaming services (4%) and grocery stores (3%). For everything else, a 1% cash-back rate covers you. If you want to avoid the annual fee, or don't have a very large dining and entertainment budget, you may also want to consider this card's sibling, the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card*, or some of our other best picks for restaurant credit cards.

Our Take

It doesn't get simpler than the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card*. This card boasts a 2% flat cash rewards rate on purchases -- the highest flat cash-back rate on the market. You don't have to worry which card you're going to use for which purchase. And while there are other cash-back credit cards that'll net you 2%, the sign-on bonus, $0 annual fee and introductory APR make this card stand out among the competition. This is also a great option for an emergency credit card.

FAQs

How do cash-back credit cards work?

Cash-back credit cards offer cardholders rewards on their spending in the form of statement credits or cash. A statement credit is a reduction in the amount due to the credit card company on your monthly bill. Note that rewards are not always available the month you earn them -- they are usually applied to your balance by credit card issuers after one or two billing cycles.

The redemption process for cash-back credit cards is either automatic or very simple. Some cards automatically apply cash rewards to your statement balance each month. Others require you to log in and redeem available rewards points for statement credits. Most points don't expire, but you will lose them if you close the account before redeeming them.

What types of cash-back credit cards are there?

Cash-back credit cards generally fall into four primary categories: flat-rate, tiered, rotating or choose your own.

Flat-rate cards offer the same rate for every purchase. Tiered cards offer a different rewards rate for different categories of spending. Rotating category cards offer different rewards each quarter, determined by the card issuer. Choose-your-own category cards allow you to choose your rewards category.

How do you choose a cash-back credit card?

To choose the best cash-back credit card for you, the most important thing is to have a clear idea of how you're already spending money each month. Once you identify the categories where you have the highest, most consistent spending, use the charts in our list to determine which card will net you the highest return. Consider other features of the cards, too, such as APR, sign-on bonuses and foreign transaction fees -- make sure you get something that fits with your lifestyle and spending habits.

Your credit card choice may also be affected by your credit score. Most of the cards we recommend require a good or excellent credit score, which is typically around 670 or higher. If you don't meet the credit criteria required, there are credit cards available that are specifically for those trying to rebuild credit, like secured credit cards. Alternatively, you can look into the best credit cards for no credit and the best credit cards for bad credit.

How we picked the best cash-back credit cards

We prioritized the cash-back credit cards that reward broad spending categories where Americans tend to spend significant amounts of money, instead of narrow categories like streaming services or "home improvement." Then we compared reward offerings with potential returns based on typical spending budgets derived from Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

In the end, we chose five high-value options from the crowded market. Some are no-annual-fee, flat-rate credit cards that earn the same amount on all purchases. Some require you make a certain qualifying purchase to start earning cash-back rewards. Some credit cards offer a sign-up bonus reward as well as cash back. Some are limited to specific spending categories (such as whether it's a grocery purchase, gas purchase, dining, transit or travel) but have a higher rewards rate, while others charge an annual fee. We then outlined important information for each card, including whether it has a transfer fee, bonus redemption thresholds or introductory APR. We also specified general credit requirements for eligibility (if you find you aren't eligible for a card that offers cash-back rewards, try a student credit card first).

What really sets a cash back credit card apart from other cards is the ability to earn dollars for daily spending. But with so many options, it can be hard to narrow down which are the best cash back credit cards on the market and which one might be right for you. Check out our top picks for the best cash back credit cards.

Cash back credit cards make it incredibly easy to earn rewards. Instead of points that you have to figure out how to redeem or might not be able to redeem for things you want — you can earn back real money.

Some cash back cards offer flat cash rates, while other cards earn higher cash back rewards across rotating categories like dining, groceries, gas and other common purchases. The competition among credit card issuers remains fierce, as more credit card customers continue to trade their usual credit cards for better rewards programs, according to the J.D. Power 2019 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study. The 2019 study also finds that 36% of cardholders say they don’t fully understand the rewards available to them, making it apparent that cardholders benefit from better education regarding their benefits.

“The average credit card customer today has roughly 16 different benefits available, yet only about one-third of customers say they completely understand all of the benefits available to them,” said John Cabell, director of wealth and lending intelligence at J.D. Power.

What does cash back mean?

Credit card cash back refers to the rewards program offered by certain credit cards that allows you to earn a percentage of “cash” back on your purchase. This usually ranges from 1% to 6%, depending on the card.

If you’re trying to receive cash from an ATM, bank teller, or convenience check with your credit card then that’s actually considered a cash advance. In those cases, you’ll need to contact your card’s customer service center to set up a PIN number. Once you have a PIN, you can withdraw money from your credit card as you would a debit card.

How do cash-back credit cards work?

Depending on the structure of your card’s rewards program, you’ll earn a certain percentage back (usually 1% to 6%) on purchases you make with your cash back rewards card. The cash back you receive from your purchases will show up on your next credit card statement and your online account.

Once your cash back rewards hit your account, you can redeem them in a few different ways. The simplest is to lower your monthly credit card bill with a statement credit. So if your credit card bill is $500 for the month, and you earned 5% cash back on all of it, you could redeem that $25 toward your balance, and you’d only have $475 left to pay.

But if you want actual cash back, you can usually have the cash rewards deposited directly into your bank account, or even receive a paper check in the mail.

Some of the best cash back credit cards also allow you to redeem your cash back rewards as gift cards.

Other credit cards allow you to donate your points to charity. One caveat to keep in mind, though: A lot of credit cards take a small (roughly 2%) interchange fee from money going to a charity. So if you’re paying a charity with your credit card, not all of it will actually get to the nonprofit, in case that affects your decision.

What credit card gives the most cash back?

Your spending habits will determine which cash back card is the best for you, but here are a few popular spending categories and the top credit cards that fall under those clusters:

  • U.S. supermarkets and U.S. gas stations:Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express – 6% Cash Back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1%), 3% Cash Back at U.S. gas stations. 1% Cash Back on other purchases.

Three types of cash back cards

Cash back credit cards come in three varieties: flat-rate, bonus category and tiered. No single cash back card is a good fit for everyone. Make your choice based on how you spend money.

  • Flat-rate cash-back cards: Unlimited, flat-rate rewards on all purchases (between 1-2%) card, but you have the flexibility of using whenever, and however you want.
  • Tiered cash-back cards: Rewards in specific categories, often with an earning limit, and a lower rate (usually 1%) on all other purchases.
  • Bonus category cards: High-rate rewards (5-6%) on spending categories that change periodically, and a lower rate on all other purchases (usually 1%).

Pros and cons of cash back credit cards

ProsCons
They’re easy to understand.
It’s easy to keep up with how much you’ve earned and what your rewards are worth, because you don’t have to convert a point or mile into the equivalent cash value.
Not everyone will qualify, based on creditworthiness.
The best cash back credit cards usually require a “good” FICO credit score – 700 or more.
Easy to redeem cash back.
Redeeming cash back is as simple as connecting your bank account for a direct transfer. Gift cards and statement credits are also options. (It’s important to note that some cards have a minimum redemption requirement.)
Chasing signup bonuses.
Cards with sign up bonuses generally have a minimum spending requirement. It can be tempting to spend more than you can afford to earn the bonus, resulting in a monthly balance and interest charges.
A wide range of bonus categories.
Some cash back cards earn high-rate rewards on categories that rotate throughout the year. Others earn unlimited flat-rate cash back on all types of purchase.
Tracking bonus categories.
Keeping track of rotating bonus categories takes discipline. If you prefer keeping things simple, consider a flat-rate cash back card..

Points vs. cash back: which is better?

The points versus cash back debate is ongoing, and it’s important to take each into consideration when choosing a rewards credit card. Both exemplify strengths and weaknesses – cash back is flexible and the rewards come in dollars, whereas points might help pay for that next vacation, and sometimes, offer a higher reward value per dollar spent.

Unfortunately, more than one-third of credit card customers do not understand rewards programs, according to the J.D. Power 2019 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study. Credit card customers who fully understand how to earn and redeem rewards spend an average of $307 more per month than those who do not fully understand their rewards ($1,291 vs. $984, respectively). Despite this, 36% of credit card customers say they do not fully understand the rewards available to them.

If you’re stuck between a rewards credit card that focuses on points or a cash back credit card, your decision will come down to your lifestyle and which one you find more valuable.

What is rotating cash back?

There are strategies you can use to win even more cash back rewards. If you have a credit card with rotating bonus categories.

Rotating bonus categories change every quarter, and can apply to a variety of different stores and services including gas stations, tolls, drugstores, grocery stores, home improvement stores streaming services, Uber and Lyft purchases, restaurants and more.

For example, if gas stations are the category for a certain quarter, you want to make sure every dollar you spend on gas is with your credit card. If it’s groceries, it may be best to do your grocery shopping with the credit card in that quarter – and possibly even stock up on some nonperishable items you know you’ll use if you’re approaching the end of the quarter and haven’t maxed out the bonus yet.

If paying attention to the rotating categories sounds like too much work and not all fun, then you may be better off with a credit card like Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card or , which doesn’t have rotating fees. You just earn 1.5% back on everything, no matter what.

How do I redeem cash back?

Redemption options vary from card to card. It’s important to remember that some of the best cash back cards have limits on how much you must redeem, and when you can redeem it — but here are the most common methods for redeeming rewards:

  • Bank deposit: All the cash back that you earn goes straight into a checking or savings account.
  • Statement credit: This form of cash back is only applied to your credit card balance — you can’t spend it anywhere else.
  • Gift cards: Some credit cards offer cash back in the form of physical gift cards or eCertificates for popular retailers and
    merchants.
  • Charitable donations: Other cards offer you the opportunity to donate your earnings to charities and disaster relief programs.

It’s important to remember that some of the best cash back cards have limits on how much you must redeem, and when you can redeem it.

Does it make sense to pay an annual fee?

Applying for a credit card with an annual fee doesn’t always make sense. If your spending habits don’t align with its reward structure, you might net a loss — even if you earn the signup bonus.

Can I get my interest rate lowered on my credit card?

Your credit card interest rate isn’t written in stone. In face, 69% of people who asked their issuer for a break got a lower rate.

If you pay your balance in full every month (which we highly recommend), interest rates don’t matter. But if you’re trying to pay down debt, asking for a lower rate could save a significant amount of money in the long run.

Before you call, look for better offers from other lenders that you can use as leverage. If you get a “no” the first time, don’t give up. Instead, ask to speak to a manager and try again.

14 Best Cash-Back Credit Cards – Reviews & Comparison

Cash-back credit cards are popular because they provide tangible, easy-to-understand benefits. Who doesn’t like getting a credit on their monthly credit card statement – or, better yet, actual cash deposited into the account of their choice? Cash-back credit cards can be even more popular than our top-rated gas credit cards and travel rewards cards.

But not all cash-back credit cards are created equally.

Some offer the same cash-back rate on all purchases. Others offer higher cash-back rates on certain spending categories, such as groceries or gas, and lower rates on everything else. Still others offer bonus cash back on spending categories that rotate every quarter. A few accrue cash back on purchases and monthly payments.

And some cash back cards even hew to hybrid models, with cash back on certain spending categories and different types of rewards (such as airline miles) on others.

Best Cash-Back Credit Cards

You’ll find each type of card on this list of the best cash-back cards available to U.S. consumers today.

Keep in mind that most cash-back credit cards require applicants to have good to excellent credit — usually indicated by a FICO credit score above 700, and sometimes even higher. If you don’t meet that threshold, work on building your credit before applying.

2. Citi® Double Cash Card

1% Cash Back When You Spend + 1% Cash Back When You Pay Your Balance; 0% APR on Balance Transfers for 18 Months

Citi Double Cash Card Art 12 4 19

Learn More

Citi Double Cash’s two-tiered cash-back program rewards cardholders who pay their balances in full each month.

As long as you’re a cardholder in good standing, you’re guaranteed to earn 1% cash back on all eligible purchases that post to your Double Cash account. But you’ll only achieve the card’s effective 2% cash-back rate when you pay off your balance in full – as you should, under normal circumstances.

Two percent cash back isn’t the only Double Cash benefit worth touting. The card’s 18-month 0% APR balance transfer promotion is among the best in the category, and the value-added perks are unusually generous for a no-annual-fee card.

  • Sign-Up Bonus: There’s presently no sign-up bonus on the Citi Double Cash Card. Check back for updates.
  • Cash-Back Rate: Earn unlimited 1% cash back on all purchases when they post to your account, then another 1% cash back on all balance payments, for a total effective cash-back rate of 2% when you pay your balance in full. You must make at least the minimum payment to qualify for the 1% cash-back rate on balance payments during that statement cycle. Cash back expires after 12 months of account dormancy (no purchases or redemptions).
  • Redemption: The minimum redemption is $25.
  • Introductory APR: 0% APR on balance transfers for 18 months. Then regular APR applies (currently 13.99% to 23.99% variable, depending on creditworthiness and prevailing rates).
  • Key Fees: There’s no annual fee. The foreign transaction fee is 3%. Balance transfers cost the greater of $5 or 3% of the transferred amount.

3. Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

6% Cash Back at U.S. Supermarkets and Select Digital Media Services; 3% at U.S. Gas Stations and Transit Operators (Including Rideshare); 1% Everywhere Else

American Express Blue Cash Preferred Credit Card

Learn More

If you love the supermarket, you’ll love the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express. You get 6% cash back on all U.S. supermarket transactions, up to a $6,000 annual spending limit. Once you hit $6,000, you get 1% back on U.S. supermarket purchases.

You’ll also earn 6% cash back on eligible purchases with digital media and streaming providers such as Netflix and HBO.

There’s no spending limit on the U.S. gas station and transit operator categories. You’ll earn 3% cash back on every $1 spent in those places. American Express treats rideshare operators such as Lyft and Uber as transit operators, which is great news for those who frequently use those services. And you’ll earn 1% cash back on all other purchases, with no limits. Cash back accrues as Reward Dollars that can be redeemed for statement credits.

One small drawback of the Blue Cash Preferred card is American Express’s restrictive definition of “supermarket.” Superstores like Walmart, wholesale clubs like Costco, and alcohol retailers aren’t considered as supermarkets for this card’s purposes.

And the $95 annual fee (see rates and fees page) does cut into your earning potential somewhat after the first year, when the annual fee is $0. But since the 6% supermarket cash back doubles what most competing cards offer, you’re still likely to come out ahead if you take full advantage of this category.

If you’re struggling to meet your $6,000 annual U.S. supermarket spending limit with food and dry goods purchases alone, make up the difference by purchasing other merchants’ gift cards at the supermarket checkout counter. It’s like getting an immediate 6% discount at your favorite restaurants, retailers, and e-commerce websites.

  • Welcome Offer: Earn $300 back after you spend at least $3,000 on purchases within the first 6 months. Cash back accrues as Reward Dollars that can be redeemed for statement credits.
  • Cash-Back Rate: Earn 6% cash back on select digital media and streaming services like Netflix and HBO. Earn 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, up to $6,000 in spending per year. After that, you receive 1% cash back at supermarkets. This card offers 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations and transit operators, including rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft. Finally, earn 1% cash back on everything else.
  • Redemption: You can redeem Reward Dollars for statement credits.
  • Introductory APR: 0% APR on purchases for 12 months. Following the end of the introductory period, the regular APR is variable (currently 13.99% to 23.99%), depending on prevailing rates and your personal creditworthiness. See rates and fees page.
  • Key Fees: The annual fee is $0 for the first year, then $95 each year thereafter. The foreign transaction fee is 2.7%. See rates and fees page.

5. Chase Freedom Flex℠ Card

5% Cash Back on the First $1,500 Spent in Rotating Categories Every Quarter; 5% Cash Back on Eligible Travel Purchases Made Through Chase Ultimate Rewards; 3% Cash Back on Dining and Drugstore PurchasesChase Freedom Flex Card Art 1 28 21

Apply Now

All purchases made with Chase Freedom Flex earn 1% cash back, with no caps or restrictions. But there’s much more to the story. Freedom Flex has several opportunities to earn bonus cash on a routine basis:

  • 5% cash back on eligible purchases up to $1,500 in quarterly rotating categories
  • 5% cash back on qualifying Lyft purchases made through March 2022
  • 5% cash back on travel purchases made through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal
  • 3% cash back on drugstore and dining purchases at restaurants, including takeout and delivery

Chase Freedom Flex leverages Chase Ultimate Rewards points, a versatile spending currency that is worth $0.01 per point or more depending on redemption. Spending in the 1% cash-back category earns 1 point per dollar, while spending in the 5% categories earns 5 points per dollar.

You can redeem for cash back (with each point being worth $0.01), deliverable as a statement credit, bank account deposit, gift card, and direct purchases at select retailers (such as Amazon). There’s no minimum to redeem.

One small drawback of Chase Freedom Flex: You have to manually activate your 5% rotating categories each quarter. If you don’t do so by the middle of the last month of that quarter, you forfeit the 5% cash-back opportunity.

  • Sign-Up Bonus: When you make $500 in qualifying purchases within three months of opening your account, you get $200. Plus, earn 5% cash back on grocery store purchases on up to $12,000 spent in the first year. This benefit does not include grocery purchases at Target or Walmart.
  • Cash-Back Rate: Earn 5% cash back on purchases in quarterly rotating categories, up to $1,500 combined spending across all categories. Through March 2022, qualifying Lyft purchases earn unlimited 5% cash back as well. Eligible Chase Ultimate Rewards travel purchases earn 5% cash back too, and drugstore and dining purchases (including takeout and delivery) earn 3% cash back. Earn unlimited 1% cash back on quarterly category purchases above the $1,500 limit and on all other purchases.
  • Redemption: You can redeem for statement credits, bank account deposits, and gift cards at a 1 point to $0.01 ratio. You can also redeem for travel, general merchandise, and other purchases at the Ultimate Rewards portal. Your cash-back rewards don’t expire as long as your account remains open and in good standing, and there’s no minimum redemption threshold for cash back.
  • Introductory APR: 0% APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months. Thereafter, variable regular APR applies.
  • Regular APR: Once the introductory promotion ends, variable regular APR applies, currently 14.99% to 24.74% APR.
  • Key Fees: There’s no annual fee. The foreign transaction fee is a flat 3%.
  • Other Perks: Enjoy a complimentary subscription to DoorDash’s DashPass service for three months from account opening, then 50% off for the next nine months.

Other perks include a 15-month 0% APR promotion for purchases (after which variable regular APR applies, currently 13.99% to 23.99%) and a nice lineup of value-added perks, including discount opportunities (see rates and fees page). One big drawback is the $25 minimum redemption threshold, which could be an issue for lighter spenders.

10. Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card

Up to 3% Cash Back on Select Purchases

Capital One Savorone Student Card Art 8 18 21

Learn More

The Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card is almost a carbon copy of the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card. Other than the fact that it’s designed for students in two- or four-year degree programs and certain other qualifying higher education situations, the biggest difference is the lack of an early spend bonus.

But when you’ve got such a generous cash back program to fall back on, one that’s light years ahead of other student credit cards, is that really such a big deal?

  • Early Spend Bonus: There’s currently no bonus offer for new cardholders.
  • Cash-Back Rate: Earn unlimited 3% cash back on qualifying grocery store purchases, dining purchases, entertainment purchases, and purchases of popular streaming services. Earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other eligible purchases. Purchases at superstores like Walmart and Target are excluded from the 3% cash back category.
  • Redemption: Redeem your accumulated cash-back rewards for a statement credit or paper check in any amount.
  • Introductory APR: None.
  • Key Fees: There’s no annual fee or foreign transaction fee.
  • Other Perks: With responsible card use and timely payments, Capital One could consider you for a credit line increase in as little as 6 months after account opening.

The Capital One Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards Credit Card promises 1.5% cash back on all eligible purchases, just like its “parent.” As with SavorOne, the biggest difference is the lack of an early spend bonus for new cardholders.

  • Early Spend Bonus: This card doesn’t have an early spend bonus at present.
  • Cash-Back Rate: Earn unlimited 1.5% cash back on all eligible purchases.
  • Redemption: Redeem your accumulated cash-back rewards for a statement credit against prior purchases or a paper check. There’s no minimum redemption threshold.

Meanwhile, this card’s 2% cash back rate at U.S. gas stations and select U.S. department stores is unlimited, as is 1% cash back everywhere else. Your cash back comes as a statement credit. 13. Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi

4% Cash Back on Gas Purchases at Costco Locations and Qualifying Gas Stations; 3% Cash Back on Restaurant and Eligible Travel Purchases; 2% Cash Back at Costco; 1% Cash Back Everywhere Else

Costco Consumer Card Art With No Expiry (004)

Learn More

The Costco Anywhere Card is a premium cash-back product exclusive to Costco members. If you’re already spending $60 per year (or $120, if you’re springing for the Executive membership) on a Costco membership, and you’re able to meet Citi’s stringent underwriting requirements, this card is a no-brainer.

Why? For folks with long commutes, healthy travel and dining-out budgets, and long Costco shopping lists, the four-tiered cash-back program is among the most generous around. Yes, the redemption framework is a little wonky – you have to redeem in person at Costco, and you have just one annual shot to do so. But most Costco members shop often enough that this isn’t a massive inconvenience.

  • Sign-Up Bonus: This card currently has no sign-up bonus. Check back for updates.
  • Cash-Back Rate: Earn 4% cash back on eligible gas purchases at Costco and qualifying gas stations, up to the first $7,000 in eligible purchases per year. Earn unlimited 3% back on eligible restaurant and travel purchases. Earn unlimited 2% cash back on eligible Costco purchases. Earn unlimited 1% cash back on all other eligible purchases, including gas purchases above the $7,000 annual spending cap.
  • Redemption: At the close of your February billing statement, you’ll receive a redemption voucher for the full value of rewards earned during the previous year. You must redeem this voucher in a single in-person transaction at Costco, either as a credit against purchases or for cash at the register (or both). The voucher remains valid until December 31 of the year issued.
  • Introductory APR: None.
  • Key Fees: $0 with a paid Costco membership ($60 for a regular household membership and $120 for an Executive membership). There is no foreign transaction fee. Cash advances cost the greater of $10 or 5%. Balance transfers cost the greater of $5 or 3%.
  • Other Perks: Fringe benefits include purchase protection for 90 to 120 days on losses caused by damage or theft and complimentary rental car insurance on rentals paid in full with the card.

Final Word

Even the most generous cash-back credit cards rarely offer more than 5% cash back on any purchases. Cards that offer more than 2% or 3% cash back typically require holders to keep track of specific spending categories or respect purchase limits.

By contrast, cash-back credit card APRs usually range from somewhere north of 10% to more than 20% in some cases. At those rates, carrying a balance for even a single month can seriously eat into your cash back earnings. Habitually carrying a balance from month to month more than negates your cash back earnings, adding to the actual cost of your purchases.

In other words, don’t let the promise of cash back lull you into letting your card balances grow over time. It’s almost never worth it. If you need to carry a credit card balance from month to month, opt for a low-APR credit card instead.

And if you worry about your ability to keep your credit card spending to a level that allows for in-full payments each month, choose a credit card with a low spending limit, or a secured credit card that requires you to make an upfront cash deposit.

What does cash back mean?

Credit card cash back refers to the rewards program offered by certain credit cards that allows you to earn a percentage of “cash” back on your purchase. This usually ranges from 1% to 6%, depending on the card.

If you’re trying to receive what credit card has the best cash back from an ATM, bank teller, or convenience check with your credit card then that’s actually considered a cash advance.

If you prefer keeping things simple, consider a flat-rate cash back card.

Points vs. cash back: which is better?

The points versus cash back debate is ongoing, and it’s important to take each into consideration when choosing a rewards credit card. Both exemplify strengths and weaknesses – cash back is flexible and the rewards come in dollars, whereas points might help pay for that next vacation, and sometimes, offer a higher reward arvest mortgage login per dollar spent.

If paying attention to the rotating categories sounds like too much work and not all fun, then you may be better off with a credit card like Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card orwhich doesn’t have rotating fees.

7 Best Cash Back Credit Cards in 2021

How to Pick the Best Credit Cards with Cash Back

With a wide variety of credit cards in the market, choosing the best one for your needs is easier said than done. To make the most of it, there are a few things to consider — its features and the effort you need to invest to earn cash back.

To help you decide what would be the best cash back rewards credit cards, chase slate credit card phone number out our guide.

Figure out what kind of cash back card you want

Cash back credit cards may be classified into three categories: flat-rate, fixed bonus, and changing bonus category.

Flat-rate cash back credit cards grant you the same rewards regardless of what you buy and where you shop. They are the simplest to handle as you don’t have to look out for eligible categories while shopping. Citi® Double Cash Back and Capital One® Spark Cash are some of the best flat-rate cash back credit cards.

Fixed bonus category credit cards reward you for specific purchases, e.g., grocery or gas shopping, bus rides, or eating out at specific restaurants. They reward other purchases as well, but with a significantly lower cash back rate.

Unlike fixed, changing bonus categories tend to change according to the season or quarter. To earn cash back, you need to activate each of the categories every quarter.

Bank of America® Cash Rewards and Blue Cash Preferred® are credit cards with high cash back from the fixed, whereas Discover it® Cash Back and Chase Freedom FlexSM offer the best rewards from the changing category.

Know your spending habits

To decide whether you need a card from a flat-rated, fixed, or changing category, you should go over your spendings. Do you spend the most money on grocery shopping in the U.S. supermarkets? Do you eat out a lot and have your favorite restaurant? Do you drive a car or take a bus or train to work? Is there a streaming service you particularly like? When you answer these questions, you’ll realize what types of credit cards with cash back what credit card has the best cash back to look into.

But, there is some minimum cash back that you should seek in credit cards. Thus, you should never opt for flat-rate cards that offer less than 1.5%. Likewise, bonus-category credit cards should offer at least 3% cash back in the highest spending category.

Check the rates & fees

In addition to the cash back, it is of utmost importance to look at the APR and annual fees while making a cash back credit card comparison. Ideally, you should opt for the ones that have a lower APR and charge a $0 annual fee.

However, if the card that seems to fit your needs best has an annual fee, you should examine how much money you will earn with cash back over the three-year period. Add up the annual cash back and a sign-up bonus, then subtract three years of fee expenses. The result will show how much you’d actually earn.

If you’re fond of traveling, you would normally look for credit cards with the best cash back rewards that charge 0% foreign transaction fee.

Simplicity is paramount

You don’t want too much hassle over your credit card. If you find activating bonus categories every quarter too tiresome, go for the card from a fixed bonus category. If your purchases or spendings can’t be classified into any particular category, a flat-rate credit card could be the best pick.

Wrap Up

Top cash back cards are a handy way to earn cash rewards with very little or no effort invested. Further, they can be quite a convenient money-saver for particular purchases or seasons. But to actually earn and save, it’s vital to choose wisely and use responsibly. There is a wide range of options to choose from. In our review, we’ve compared cash back credit cards to help you find the one that fits you and your shopping habits best.
