WWE Money in the Bank results: John Cena returns as two titles change hands

Bar WrestleMania 37, WWE welcomed fans back to a main roster pay-per-view tonight for Money in the Bank for the first time since Elimination Chamber in March 2020, and what a show it was.

Tonight's show was jampacked, featuring several blockbuster matches, two of which were ladder matches for the Money in the Bank briefcases, and the return of some rather familiar faces.

All reports pointed towards Money in the Bank being a huge show for WWE, with the company reportedly calling in some big names for the show, and that ended up happening, as multi-time WWE Champion John Cena returned to TV on the show tonight, confronting Universal Champion Roman Reigns.

This was Cena's first appearance in a WWE ring since WrestleMania 36 last year, and fans have been eager to see the Fast and Furious 9 star back with the company ever since.

The show was main evented - as expected - by Edge vs. Roman Reigns in a match for the Universal Championship.

Below are all the results for the show, in case you didn't match to catch what went down:

  • The Usos def. Dominik & Rey Mysterio to WIN the SmackDown Tag Team Championship (kickoff show)
  • Nikki A.S.H def. Asuka, Alexa Bliss, Naomi, Natalya, Tamina, Liv Morgan and Zelina Vega to WIN the women's Money in the Bank ladder match.
  • Omos & AJ Styles def. The Viking Raiders to RETAIN the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship
  • Bobby Lashley def. Kofi Kingston to RETAIN the WWE Championship
  • CharlotteFlair def. Rhea Ripley to WIN the WWE Raw Women's Championship
  • Big E def. Seth Rollins, Riddle, Shinsuke Nakamura, Drew McIntyre, Ricochet, Kevin Owens and John Morrison to WIN the men's Money in the Bank ladder match.
  • Roman Reigns def. Edge to RETAIN the Universal Championship.

What a brilliant night of action, leaving fans VERY excited for the future of WWE television.

Catch all the fallout from WWE Money in the Bank on Monday Night RAW and Friday Night SmackDown, airing live in the UK on BT Sport.

WWE Gets Some Great News On Money In The Bank

It isn’t that surprising. We are coming up on one of the biggest weekends of the year for WWE as fans will be returning to their events starting on July 16 with SmackDown, followed by the July 19 Monday Night Raw. There is a show in the middle though and it is a pretty big one, as WWE will be presenting Money In The Bank 2021 on July 18. That is still a fairly long way off, but WWE has some good news.

According to the AEW Ticket Info Twitter account, as of Wednesday, only 247 of the 11,364 tickets originally released for the show at the box office are still available. There is no word on how many more tickets might be made available in the future. The event will be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, in between SmackDown in Houston and Monday Night Raw in Dallas.

Money in the Bank will be the first full capacity pay per view event for WWE since Elimination Chamber 2020. Following Elimination Chamber, WWE moved its events to Florida in a variety of locations. Save for a limited number of fans being in attendance for weekly NXT shows, WWE has not had a large number of fans in attendance in over a year, outside of both nights of WrestleMania 37, which featured limited capacity fans in Raymond James Stadium.

Money in the Bank is going to be a special show. Check out some of the best moments from the show, the match and the contract:

Title wins at WWE Money in the Bank: WWE Top 10, May 10, 2020

Extreme Money in the Bank Ladder Match moments: WWE Top 10, June 9, 2018

Greatest Money in the Bank contract cash-ins: WWE Top 10

Greatest Money in the Bank contract cash-ins: WWE Top 10

Opinion: This is some good news for WWE, though it might not be the biggest surprise. Above all else, there are going to be a lot of fans who want to get out of their houses and do something fun, so having a WWE pay per view available might seem like something rather entertaining. I’m curious to see how it is going to go, but at least they seem to be out to a good start.

Of all the gimmick matches in the WWE, maybe the most-loved recent(ish) addition is the Money in the Bank ladder match.

Invented by Chris Jericho, the concept is simple but brilliant. A ladder match with a twist. Instead of having a title hanging over the ring, there's a briefcase.

And in the briefcase? A contract for a title match that you can cash-in any time you like over the next 365 days.

It's (almost) as good as a title itself, as with the choice of when you cash in you've got the biggest possible advantage against the current titleholder.

And for the fans it's much more fun than just winning the title outright, as that briefcase can act like the ultimate Chekhov's gun to keep the WWE Universe on its toes until it's cashed in.

July 2021 gave us two MITB matches in front of a loud and live audience as lockdown finally eased.

Chris Jericho Responds After Michael Cole Incorrectly Recalls WWE Money in the Bank History

Several WWE fans pointed out a bizarre moment during Sunday's Money in the Bank pay-per-view when SmackDown commentator Michael Cole made the claim that Edge invented the concept of the Money in the Bank Ladder Match. The WWE Hall of Famer did win the initial ladder match as was the first man to ever successfully cash-in the briefcase twice, but he's never been credited as the inventor of the concept. That distinction belongs to another Canadian in Chris Jericho, now a member of AEW's roster. Several fans altered Jericho to Cole's comment, prompting "Le Champion" to respond.

"True story!!! (Brian Gewirtz) and I came up with that entire match concept. Well almost all of it... @VinceMcMahon insisted that the contract be in a briefcase," Jericho wrote.

Gewirtz, who worked as a WWE writer for well over a decade, gave some additional context. Leading up to the initial Money in the Bank match at WrestleMania 21, the idea was that each wrestler would be competing for a "Hollywood Dream" where they could make one wish that the company would have to fulfill. The concept has since involved into being a centerpiece of one of WWE's annual pay-per-views.

Ranking every WWE Money in the Bank cash-in attempt in history

Since 2005, the Money in the Bank ladder match has become one of the most exciting events on the entire WWE calendar. After becoming a huge hit for six straight WrestleManias, the event got its own pay-per-view event in 2010. Before the 2017 edition, we’ll take a look at every cash-in attempt of the match’s briefcase in WWE history.

There’s one title in WWE that many have tried to hold, but few have before: Mr. Money in the Bank. (Thanks to this year’s show, we’ll be getting the first Ms. Money in the Bank, which freakin’ rules.)

Since 2005, when Chris Jericho came up with the concept of the match (and if you don’t believe he created it, just ask him) for a ladder match that would reward the winner a world championship match anywhere at any time for the person that rose up the ladder and grabbed a briefcase with the contract for that match inside, the match has become one of the can’t-miss events of the year for WWE.

Past winners include WWE Hall of Famer Edge, who became the first person to cash in the briefcase twice, current UFC fighter CM Punk, who became the first to win two Money in the Bank ladder matches and 13-time world champion Randy Orton, who won the briefcase back in 2013.

Before we get not one, but two Money in the Bank ladder matches at the SmackDown Live-specific Money in the Bank pay-per-view on June 18, we’ll take a look at every single cash-in attempt in the past and rank each of them from the worst to the best.

So, to not keep you waiting any longer, here’s a list of all 17 cash-ins ranked, starting with WWE’s most polarizing superstar of all-time.

John Cena won the Money in the Bank ladder match in 2012.what is the money in the bank wwe WWE.com

    17. John Cena wins the Money in the Bank ladder match in 2012, cashes in on RAW’s 1,000th episode and wins … via DQ

It wouldn’t be John Cena-related if it wasn’t the first thing to ever occur, right?

(I mean there was the “Once in a Lifetime” match … that happened twi … you know what, never mind. Let’s move on. You get the idea. Cena is important.)

In his first and only Money in the Bank ladder match in 2012 — the year where Cena’s life was basically falling apart on camera after the loss to The Rock — the guy that Never Gives Up won RAW‘s Money in the Bank ladder match and couple things were of note with his victory:

    1. He was one of the few stars to announce when he was going to cash in his briefcase (which ended up being RAW‘s 1,000 episode against then-WWE Champion CM Punk).
    2. He won his cash-in match, but didn’t win the title, which to this day, is the only instance of something like this happening for a cash-in attempt.

Cena cashed in for a match with CM Punk, but thanks to the Big Show’s interference in the match, Cena won the title match by disqualification, but didn’t win the championship, marking the first time ever that a cash-in attempt didn’t result in a championship changing hands.
